McLean, the company’s secretary and general counsel, wrote to Carson’s publisher, Houghton Mifflin, suggesting they may want to reconsider the book’s publication, then scheduled for the end of September. Velsicol’s five-page registered letter arrived at Houghton Mifflin on August 2, 1962 and noted, in particular, the book’s “inaccurate and disparaging statements” about two pesticides – chlordane and heptachlor – then solely manufactured by Velsicol. Houghton Mifflin then decided to have the book reviewed by an independent toxicologist on the points raised by Velsicol. The reviewing toxicologist found Carson’s statements accurate. The publisher then informed Velsicol that the book would be published as planned.</span><p style="border: 0px; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 14px; margin: 11px 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; color: rgb(43, 43, 43); line-height: 16.7999992370605px; text-align: justify;" /><p style="border: 0px; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 14px; margin: 11px 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; color: rgb(43, 43, 43); line-height: 16.7999992370605px; text-align: justify;"> Meanwhile, other reaction to the <em style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Silen</em></p><p style="border: 0px; margin: 11px 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; text-align: justify;"><span style="border: 0px; border-image-source: initial; border-image-slice: initial; border-image-width: initial; border-image-outset: initial; border-image-repeat: initial; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; font-size: 14px; line-height: 16.7999992370605px;"><font color="#2b2b2b" face="Georgia, Times New Roman, Times, serif"><i><a href="http://www.pophistorydig.com/topics/tag/silent-spring-velsicol-chemical/">http://www.pophistorydig.com/topics/tag/silent-spring-velsicol-chemic</a>al/</i></font></span></p></div><div></div>
