On Steve Bannon’s War Room, John Solomon scrambles to substantiate Trump’s claims of Chinese election interference
What Solomon claims is "a pretty big bitch slap of the mainstream media” appears to be just watering down the definition of election interference
Written by Sophie Lawton
Published 07/31/26
The Trump administration's quest to prove a foreign government interfered in the 2020 election face-planted rather publicly this month. But rather than dig up more compelling evidence to prove the case, John Solomon, the conservative media figure and head of the White House task force leading these efforts, is seemingly on a mission to water down the definition of “election interference.”
On July 16, President Donald Trump delivered a much-hyped primetime speech fearmongering about election security. As Lawfare put it, the speech “was most notable for what it did not contain: evidence that any malign activity affected the result. Much of what he described was already known. None of it showed that votes were changed, fraudulent ballots were counted, or the election was stolen. None of it showed that intelligence officials had concealed such evidence.”
The U.S. intelligence community concluded in 2021 that it had “high confidence” that “China did not deploy interference efforts and considered but did not deploy influence efforts intended to change the outcome of the US Presidential election,” and there were “no indications that any foreign actor attempted to alter any technical aspect of the voting process in the 2020 US election.” Following Trump's July 16 speech, Solomon admitted to reporters that “the intelligence community has zero evidence that … a foreign power flipped the vote in 2020, '22, or '24.”
But now, while Solomon has been attempting a media tour to stir up hype around Trump's speech, the White House on July 30 released a flimsy and unsigned fact sheet that claims China “and their proxies bought, stole, or hacked as many as 220 million Americans’ voter registration data,” and therefore the country’s efforts had passed the threshold for “election interference.”
On former Trump strategist Steve Bannon's War Room podcast, Solomon argued his reinterpretation of the intelligence community's findings is a slam dunk, telling Bannon, “What the chiefs say today is the targeting of those files constitutes an act of election interference under the definition of the intelligence community.” Solomon whined that the media have been claiming there was no election interference by China but this fact sheet proves otherwise, declaring, “Today was a pretty big bitch slap of the mainstream media.”

Solomon also relayed to Bannon that his White House task force has “a little bit more to reveal on election integrity and vulnerabilities that still need to be plugged,” adding, “I think we will have a long hot summer and maybe a long hot fall of revelations of just how bad the intelligence and FBI was during the Comey-Wray era.”

Solomon repeated the same points on Real America's Voice's morning show American Sunrise, telling the hosts “a lot of mainstream media like The New York Times and the AP tried to downplay” the claims Trump made in his speech, but he insisted that China has data “that is harmful to America's elections going forward” and “could interfere with the election.” On his own show, Just the News: No Noise, Solomon claimed, “In the future, China has the capability to do mischief in our elections like vote on your behalf.”
However, in a new report responding to the White House fact sheet, The Washington Post assessed that “the declassified documents do not contain evidence that China ever tampered with voter rolls or ballots, or had the ability to, consistent with U.S. spy agencies’ consensus that China did not try to tamper with election infrastructure in 2020.”
The task force did not provide additional evidence to support those claims. Instead, it pointed to one of the documents released on July 16 saying a Chinese hacker obtained “publicly available U.S. voter registration information” from commercial websites in January 2022, too late to have any bearing on the 2020 election.
...
U.S. officials did not know why the Chinese hacker took the information, the memo said, but it could “in theory” be used for future hacking or “election influence.”
The article also reported that “because no official state or federal database containing nationwide registered voters exists, the document suggests the data came from a party or company, not from penetrating an official election system,” despite claims from the White House that China previously targeted “a nationwide set of 204.8 million voter records” in 2019.
Without evidence that the hackers broke into the systems that states use to operate elections, there would be no way for them to add, delete or modify voter registrations.
...
Experts also noted that the Trump administration has not taken any action to punish China for obtaining the data, indicating the danger is not as severe as the White House was suggesting.

Former intelligence officials are demanding answers about an alleged CIA document used by President Donald Trump to promote his election denial claims. According to officials, this “weird” document appears to have been “tailor made” for Trump rather than adhering to normal agency procedure. According to MSNOW, these officials “think the public should know when and why it was written, and who requested it.”
The matter involves a CIA note on the People’s Republic of China entitled “Sensitive PRC Reporting from 2018 – 2020.” As MSNOW explained, “The date is redacted, and it is unclear where within the CIA it originated. Trump quoted directly from the three-page document in his speech when citing debunked claims that the intelligence community withheld information from him about China, and called on the Justice Department to ‘fire those involved in the cover-up’ and ‘file criminal charges if appropriate.’”
Former officials, however, have raised alarms that the document appears to be “raw intelligence all supporting a single view — alleging that China wanted Trump to lose the 2020 election and sought to influence the outcome — without including the full scope, context or any definitive conclusion from the agency’s information. The Trump administration, the officials said, should answer whether the document was drafted in response to a narrowly tailored request from someone within the administration, noting that to do so with the purpose of supporting Trump’s accusations about the security of America’s elections would be a clear politicization of the country’s intelligence community.”
According to a Democratic lawmaker with national security oversight, there are many questions about the document, a list of which will be sent to the CIA. For example, “the document does not show traditional accountability markers, such as authorship and footnotes, and the high degree of confidence expressed in the document is unusual.” Six former CIA and intelligence officials agreed that the CIA and White House should answer questions.
“The fact that the document presented only one viewpoint and appeared to be crafted in response to a narrow query should be investigated, the former officials said,” explained MSNOW. “The Steady State, a group of former national security and intelligence officials, is calling for an independent investigation by key congressional committees and the inspectors general for the intelligence community and CIA. Steven Cash, executive director of The Steady State and a former CIA and Department of Homeland Security official, is sending a letter Tuesday to top lawmakers on the intelligence committees and agency watchdog offices, detailing key ‘anomalies’ in the document.”
The Steady State concluded that the document “departs in both style and format” from CIA drafting norms and does not have caveats typical of CIA analysis. One former official called it “weird,” saying it “doesn’t read like a finished product.” According to former CIA analyst Julie Curlee, the document looks recently generated and “tailor made.” As she explains, “Released under CIA letterhead, but with its author and publication date redacted, it has all the hallmarks of a memo built to serve the president’s political needs and the intelligence community’s authority turned against the American public.”
“Was this done to placate Trump?” another former senior intelligence official wondered.

Right-wing media figures are split on AI and data centers
Amid internal divisions within the Trump admin on how to regulate AI, right-wing media are split on AI’s benefits and whether data centers pose a risk
Written by Jack Winstanley & Hanne MacDonald
Published 07/08/26
As novel AI tools continue to emerge and massive data center construction projects generate local and national controversy, right-wing media are divided over the impacts of the technology and the infrastructure that supports it. Some right-wing figures have been critical of AI, arguing it poses an “existential threat” to civilization and that data centers “deserve the rap they’re getting.” Others have championed continued growth of AI and data center construction, claiming that “data centers are good for society, good for the economy” and downplaying concerns that people living near them “might have to put on some earmuffs” or “might have to move.”
Trump administration takes steps to regulate AI as the technology comes under scrutiny
- On June 2, President Donald Trump signed an executive order asking companies to provide the government with early access to new AI models before they launch to assess them for cybersecurity risks. The executive order came after the Department of Defense’s showdown with Anthropic, which has been blacklisted by the Pentagon over security concerns, and the release of the company's Mythos product, which was explicitly marketed to exploit cybersecurity vulnerabilities. CNN,[6/2/26; White House,6/2/26; Anthropic, 4/7/26]
- Trump initially delayed signing the executive order, citing fears that it would impede U.S. competitiveness. The delay, which reportedly followed a call from former White House crypto and AI czar David Sacks, also coincided with splits within the administration over the extent to which the federal government should be stepping in to regulate AI models. Sacks reportedly advocated an anti-regulatory stance while Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was “pushing for greater barriers to Mythos-type models.” NBC News,[5/21/26; Politico,5/28/26; Bloomberg, 12/6/24]
- On June 12, the Trump administration imposed export controls on Anthropic’s Fable and Mythos models, citing “national security authority.” Politico reports that the administration's move came after “tense calls” between Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and administration officials who could not come to an agreement on how to remedy the White House's concerns. Politico, [6/13/26]
- Data centers are facing widespread backlash across the country — including Shark Tank investor Kevin O’Leary’s formerly planned 40,000-acre data center project in Utah — with some localities even prohibiting their construction. The rapid growth of data centers has angered residents across Utah. A coalition of groups in New Jersey have petitioned the governor to pause all data center projects due to their impacts on residents and the environment. Denver’s city council approved a one-year moratorium on new data center projects following public pushback. And, backlash against data centers has also begun to emerge in the Make America Healthy Again coalition, with one MAHA media figure calling the continued construction of data centers “not compatible with the promise to Make America Healthy Again.” Fortune,[5/11/26; Inside Climate News,5/14/26; NewJersey.com,5/17/26; Axios Denver,5/18/26; Media Matters, 6/10/26]
- Amid the growing data center backlash, right-wing media personalities have had mixed reactions, with some suggesting that China is behind the protests, while others have admitted that “a lot of the opposition is grassroots.” In one Fox Business appearance, O’Leary stated that “the Communist government of China is undermining the U.S. by fueling anti-AI data center protests.” Fox News later made on-air apologies for O'Leary's claim, noting there was “no evidence” and that Fox News “apologizes for the error.” Media Matters, [6/10/26; Business Insider, 6/29/26]
- Calls for regulation around AI have been brewing within the MAGA camp, with an open-letter signed by over 60 “loyal allies of President Trump,” including Steve Bannon, urging government security testing and approval of AI models. In the past year, several other open letters calling for limits or regulations on AI development were directed toward the administration. At least two were co-signed by Bannon, and at least one was signed by conservative media personality Glenn Beck. Axios, [5/18/26; NBC News, 3/4/26; Time, 10/22/25]
- ## Some right-wing media figures have criticized AI and data centers, highlighting negative impacts
- Podcaster Candace Owens urged people to “cause an uproar” over planned data centers in their communities. She added, “There are more of us than them.” YouTube, *Candace*,[5/20/26]
- :{:{Host Alex Jones called data centers “the new system to rape us.” In another episode, Jones explained that AI is “being deployed to make us obsolete.” He continued, “There's not enough hype of how dangerous this is.” The Alex Jones Network, *Alex Jones Live*, [5/17/26, 5/13/26]}:
}:
- Jones said that data centers “sound like a trillion fingernails on a chalkboard,” and stated that “the globalists are deploying it [AI] to replace us.” Jones continued, “They're stealing almost all the water and they do whatever they want.” With regards to AI rollouts, Jones stated, “We’re just stepping aside and saying yeah, we’re not going to have any prohibitions on this, we’re not going to have any controls. In fact, we’re not going to have any studies on it, even though the numbers are already showing young people and AI are losing IQ, getting depressed, alone, destroying relationships.” The Alex Jones Network, *Alex Jones Live*, [6/1/26]
- OnOutnumbered, Fox News contributor Mollie Hemingway shared sympathy for college graduates who booed commencement speakers discussing AI positively. She continued, “I actually kind of understand what the students are going through. Imagine that you have spent so much money to receive what is considered an education. … Then you have basically no job prospects because of how disruptive AI has been for the job market. I think it's something that people should understand.” Fox News, *Outnumbered*, [5/18/26]
- Podcaster Megyn Kelly stated that she is “very worried about AI,” and shared concerns that there is a lack of discussion on the “existential threat” AI could pose to human life. Additionally, Kelly called out the potential “elimination of all of our children's livelihoods.” In a later episode, Kelly doubled down, arguing that “the American public should have a piece of it” since “their kids are not going to have jobs” and adults “are going to have their livelihoods wiped out.” SiriusXM, *The Megyn Kelly Show*,[5/18/26, 6/11/26]
- Tucker Carlson criticized Trump for “encouraging more surveillance, more spying on Americans, to encouraging data centers across the country to abet that surveillance.” In another episode, Carlson also claimed that “there's been no real effort to explain to you or me or anyone how this is going to be great for us.” According to Carlson, major AI developers have focused on “telling us this is going to end everything that we love, including human autonomy, our jobs, our economy. It'll basically be a slave state run by machines.” YouTube, *The Tucker Carlson Show*, [5/20/26, 5/18/26]
All-In Podcastco-host Chamath Palihapitiya: “To be very clear and blunt, there is literally not a scintilla of evidence that AI has helped lift the operating margins of the S&P 500.” He also stated that the AI industry “doesn't have a measurable benefit for themselves,” and argued that “eventually it all comes home to roost” when AI investors want to see returns on their investments. YouTube, *All-In Podcast*, [5/8/26]
PBD Podcastco-host Tom Ellsworth stated that “data centers deserve the rap they’re getting.” He added that complaints about ambient noise, water use, and power problems were well-founded, though argued that legislation could be created to offset some of the concerns. YouTube, *PBD Podcast*,[5/11/26]
- On former Trump adviser Steve Bannon’sWar Roompodcast, American Principles Project President Terry Schilling argued that AI wants to “subjugate us and colonize all of rural America.” Schilling shared concerns that AI data centers will “drive up energy costs, it's going to drive up water costs, it's going to drive down the value of the land. … We have to stop this all over the country.” Real America’s Voice, *War Room*, [4/6/26]
- Podcaster Jimmy Dore argued that “our own government” is working with AI developers to “create a surveillance state and make sure we don't have jobs.”YouTube, *The Jimmy Dore Show*, [5/16/26]
- In a social media post played onWar Room, right-wing influencer Mike Cernovich argued that data centers would support “cradle to the grave surveillance.” In the video, which Bannon called “100% correct,” Cernovich also argued that Big Tech is using “populist messaging” to continue “profiteering.” Real America’s Voice, *War Room*, [5/14/26]
- Discussing the need to “beat China” at AI development, Daily Wire host Matt Walsh said, “If we impoverish millions of people and empower bureaucrats and Big Tech oligarchs with surveillance tools beyond their wildest imagination, then what good is it to win the race?” Walsh continued, “How is human welfare secured or advanced by creating a society where we are tracked and surveilled every hour of the day? And at the same time, millions of jobs become obsolete all at once.” The Daily Wire, *The Matt Walsh Show*, [5/14/26]
- Far-right podcaster Stew Peters stated, “The data centers are not a good thing. And there's not a good argument that makes the data centers a good thing,” calling them “digital prisons.” Peters also claimed that the data center project in Utah uses “more than two times the amount of power that the entire state currently uses.” The Stew Peters Network, *Stew Peters Financial*, [6/13/26]
- ## Others have expressed their support for AI and data center construction, with some dismissing potential harms
- TheBlaze’s Glenn Beck proclaimed, “If you are just against the data centers, I can’t help you. I think you’re wrong on that.” Later, he added, “If you don't like the idea of the data center in your county, how do you feel about your grandchildren being under the thumb of an all-powerful AI that comes from China? Because those are the stakes, as I see them.” TheBlaze, *The Glenn Beck Program*, [6/5/26]
- OnThe Mark Levin Show, guest host Brian Mudd argued that job loss due to AI is overstated since “less sexy-sounding companies” that build the data centers will be hiring. He stated, “Bottom line is, it always makes the news when you have like a high-profile tech company that announces AI related layoffs,” adding later, “What doesn't make the news is when all these less sexy-sounding companies and jobs, the construction jobs, HVAC jobs, the whatever that goes in, and you're certainly the small companies, those under 20 employees, all these jobs are being added.” Westwood One, *The Mark Levin Show*, [6/5/26]
- The Daily Wire’s Ben Shapiro pushed back on concerns about energy prices being impacted by data centers, stating, “Red states just regulate energy far less than blue states.” He also dismissed concerns about water consumption, claiming that “as for the argument that data centers are going to disproportionately consume water, we should look at what actually disproportionately consumes water in the United States. … Almonds.” The Daily Wire, *The Ben Shapiro Show*, [5/18/26]
- In another episode, Shapiro argued, “If you are concerned about things like inflation, one of the things that will allow for deflation, that will allow for prices to actually come down, is the increased productivity that is a result of innovation via AI.” The Daily Wire, *The Ben Shapiro Show*, [6/4/26]
- During an interview with podcaster and former FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino, Heritage Foundation economist Peter St. Onge claimed that “AI uses almost no water” and suggested that companies “have to learn how to bribe local towns” to build data centers. St. Onge discussed concerns about power usage and data centers, claiming, “People worry about the energy usage of data centers. Trump recently required that AI companies have to build their own [power] generation. It's a very, very good idea. The water thing is B.S. — AI uses almost no water.” Rumble, *The Dan Bongino Show*, [5/29/26]
- Bongino minimized the environmental concerns of data centers, calling the criticism “an op.” Later in his podcast, Bongino argued that AI dominance was a national security concern, adding, “I know they're not popular. I get it. However, what are you going to do? AI — You're going to let China build a bunch of data centers to use advanced AI products to hack every single U.S. bank, contract system, water plant? We don't have a choice.” Rumble, *The Dan Bongino Show*, [5/27/26, 5/27/26]
- OnThe Joe Rogan Experience, MAGA billionaire Marc Andreessen said, “If you're ever going to build anything, a data center is the most benign thing you could ever build because it doesn't do anything.” He went on to describe the backlash to Kevin O'Leary's proposed data center in Utah as “a weird issue,” claiming, “You're never going to see it. It's out in the middle of nowhere.” YouTube, *The Joe Rogan Experience*, [5/19/26; Fortune, 12/11/24]
- PBD Podcastco-host Adam Sosnick dismissed concerns that ambient noise from data centers would harm people's hearing, saying that people living nearby “might have to put on some earmuffs” or “might have to move.” Sosnick: “If it's going to affect some people's hearings, you might have to move. They might not have to build the data plant, data centers, right there. But at the end of the day, data centers are good for society, good for the economy, and just, you might have to put on some earmuffs like in old school.” Valuetainment Media, *PBD Podcast*, [5/11/26]
- OnThe Five, Fox’s Greg Gutfeld argued that AI is “going to create as many jobs as it gets rid of.” Gutfeld also likened the advent of AI to the invention of the automobile, arguing, “The way the automobile sped up travel, AI is going to speed up research.” Fox News, *The Five*, [5/13/26]
- Podcaster Joe Rogan suggested that AI “could analyze where all the money goes and eliminate all the fraud and waste” in the federal government. He also argued that such AI integration “would be a great benefit and a way to make it so that your taxes directly benefit people.” YouTube, *The Joe Rogan Experience*, [5/5/26]

The plot to subvert the midterms is getting stranger and more dangerous
Right-wing media figures including Steve Bannon, John Solomon, and Cleta Mitchell appear to be weaving together a narrative about interference by China in US elections to justify a national emergency to curtail voting rights
Written by John Knefel
Published 07/02/26
Over the last several weeks, the outlines of a plot have begun to emerge that could signal how President Donald Trump, along with MAGA media figures and activists, could attempt to severely curtail voting rights under the pretext of declaring a national emergency posed by China.
The details of the scheme remain publicly vague, and may not yet come to pass, but the short version looks something like this: First, the White House would declassify and release documents purporting to show foreign interference in U.S. elections, especially by the Chinese Communist Party.
Next, Trump would use that supposed “proof” of a stolen election to declare a national emergency, thereby — according to those pushing this idea — giving him extraordinary powers over the upcoming midterms. That move would serve as a way to advance the anti-voting rights measures in the SAVE America Act, like forcing voters to prove their citizenship, without having to actually pass the law — which Congress, so far at least, appears reluctant to do.
The main players here come not only from the fever swamp backwaters of MAGA media, but also from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the White House. Former Trump adviser Steve Bannon is a central node, attempting to advance the operation on his War Room podcast, aired on right-wing network Real America’s Voice, long a major source of misinformation about the 2020 election.
The main players here come not only from the fever swamp backwaters of MAGA media, but also from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the White House
Bannon’s RAV colleague John Solomon, whose role in the plot appears to be running the declassification effort, was recently appointed to a White House “task force” into supposed election integrity. Solomon was Media Matters’ Misinformer of the Year in 2019 for his role in laundering misinformation about the Bidens and Ukraine through his opinion columns.
Also in the mix is Peter Schweizer, who founded the Government Accountability Institute with Bannon and has moved from spreading misinformation about the Clintons to claiming that China is taking over the United States by exploiting birthright citizenship.
Then there’s Cleta Mitchell, a right-wing lawyer who was on the January 2021 call when Trump urged Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to “find” enough ballots to tip the state his way. She referenced Schweizer in a June 20 appearance on War Room, positively paraphrasing an argument he made on his podcast acknowledging that much of the voting activity he wants to suppress is actually legal.
“Peter Schweizer put it pretty well last week in a podcast that he does with Eric Eggers, and the question they posed is: If fraud is made — if election fraud is made legal, is it still fraud?” Mitchell asked. “Because what's happened in California over the last decade is that the far-left Democrat, socialist, Marxists, communists have completely upended every vestige of election integrity.” (Bannon had teed her up by referencing the Los Angeles mayoral primary, claiming without evidence: “They stole it right in front of our face and laughed at us the entire time.")

Mitchell is supported by a loose array of election deniers who have called on Trump to issue an executive order to seize “king-like powers” over voting systems, supported by the national emergency decree.
Bill Pulte, the newly installed acting DNI, and his recently appointed chief of staff, former Republican National Committee official Christina Norton, also appear to figure heavily into the plan. On June 20, Bannon said Pulte’s role at DNI is “to get to the bottom of the 2020 stolen election.” Ten days later, Bannon described Norton as “one of the top election fraud people in all of the RNC” and said Pulte is “signaling where he's going on this” with her hiring, adding that “my understanding is that there is going to be real revelations about the stealing of the 2020 election."
The same day, NBC News reported that Solomon’s task force “is gathering thousands of pages of documents from U.S. intelligence agencies, with plans to declassify some of them, so President Donald Trump can amplify new accusations about past elections.” In describing his unpaid role at the White House, Solomon said he will be releasing “some documents, some secrets you should know about when it comes to weaponization, election integrity, other things."
Solomon’s recent media footprint offers clues about what he is likely looking to find, declassify, and present — possibly out of context. The subhead of a May 6 article of Solomon’s states: “The evidence continues to stack up that the U.S. intel community sought to downplay China's actions in 2020 as Trump sought reelection.” Then, during a May 19 interview, he said: “We do know the FBI had grave suspicions that China was trying to rig the election, probably with help from people on the ground, to help Joe Biden specifically."
The Supreme Court’s narrow June 30 decision to protect birthright citizenship could turbocharge the Bannon-Solomon-Pulte scheme, in part by providing fodder for anti-Chinese sentiment on the right. On Solomon’s website, Just The News, an article about the birthright citizenship case referenced Schweizer’s book and hyped the supposed China menace.
Birthright citizenship abuse via birth tourism, when foreign nationals travel to the United States on temporary visas specifically to give birth, is an issue that Trump addressed early in his second term.
Investigative journalist Peter Schweizer detailed this practice extensively in his 2026 book, “The Invisible Coup: How American Elites and Foreign Powers Use Immigration as a Weapon,” in which he described how China has industrialized the practice on a large scale through an organized industry.
Michelle Mittelstadt of the Migration Policy Institute told FactCheck.org that “birth tourism is a very small occurrence – of the 3.6 million U.S. births annually, a tiny fraction is due to foreign women who are not regularly domiciled in the U.S. coming here for the purpose of giving birth to secure U.S. citizenship for their child.”
And as the American Immigration Council’s Dara Lind noted: “Consulates have a ton of discretion under existing law to deny someone a visa. And suspicion of birth tourism _has_ served as a reason to deny visas in the past. If the problem is insufficient enforcement, good news, you can solve that problem without changing the law or Constitution!”
Bannon stated plainly on June 29 that Solomon’s “task force” and “also Pulte” would be central to creating a “predicate” for the declaration of a national emergency and subsequent executive order achieving the anti-voting rights goals of the SAVE America Act.
On June 30, Bannon interviewed another of his RAV colleagues, Wayne Allyn Root, who further elaborated what a national emergency declaration could look like.
“Stop talking about the SAVE Act and do a national security emergency for elections, which is the SAVE Act, which contains everything that's in the SAVE Act, Steve, and more and more,” Root said.
Just days earlier, on June 24, Trump canceled a signing ceremony for a bipartisan housing bill to pressure Congress to pass the stalled out SAVE America Act, which he referred to as a “National Emergency."
The “predicate” Bannon is hoping to manufacture could also be for other election initiatives the administration is working on — such as trying to force courts to give the administration access to various state voter rolls — an issue the administration is facing significant resistance to.
Whether this harebrained plot congeals into an active conspiracy to subvert the midterms remains to be seen, but given that Trump has already tried to overturn one election it would be a mistake not to take these rumblings seriously. There may indeed be an emergency — it’s just not the one that Bannon and company are talking about.

MARIA BARTIROMO (ANCHOR): Meanwhile there's this, Kevin O'Leary appeared as a guest on this program back on May 11 and discussed the ongoing controversy surrounding his planned data center project in Utah. Now, he made certain claims relating to the opponents of that project. Mr. O'Leary has now corrected the record and explained that he has no evidence that the Alliance for a Better Utah, Elevate Strategies, Josh Kanter, Taylor Knuth, or Gabrielle Finlayson are funded by China or the Chinese Communist Party. Fox News Media is likely — likewise aware of no evidence that they are funded by or acting at the direction of or in coordination with Chinese interests in opposing Kevin O'Leary's project. Right-wing media defend ICE detention center amid protests over horrible living conditions
Written by Sophie Lawton
Research contributions from John Knefel
Published 05/29/26
Right-wing media are defending the living conditions at Delaney Hall, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center in New Jersey, following reports of a detainee hunger strike sparking protests outside. In addition to repeating Department of Homeland Security talking points about the conditions, media figures have attacked protesters outside the facility, claiming the demonstrations are “performance art,” among other allegations.
According to NBC, one lawyer who represents multiple detainees said her clients at Delaney Hall “have been given expired food and meals with worms in them” and that some “have been released in recent months because they were not receiving medication or treatment for cancer, diabetes, depression and other conditions.”
The Department of Homeland Security has denied that a hunger strike is taking place at the facility, and both DHS and private prison company the GEO Group, which operates Delaney Hall, have rebuked claims that conditions are unsanitary or “subprime.” In the past year, reports of poor conditions at ICE detention centers have arisen across the country, including from locations such as Fort Bliss Army Base in Texas and the so-called “Alligator Alcatraz” facility in Florida.
Right-wing news pundits and podcasters have contested such reports, repeating DHS talking points claiming that conditions in immigration detention facilities are “clean and nice” and possibly offer “better meals” and “better healthcare” than detainees had previously. Further, several have argued that it shouldn’t matter whether the detainees are on a hunger strike.
Besides defending the facilities, right-wing media figures have also attacked the protesters demonstrating outside Delaney Hall, encouraging escalation from the federal government and accusing protesters of being an “organized agitator group” that aims to stir up votes for the midterm elections and set violent criminals loose on the streets.

STEVE BANNON (HOST): Frank, you called this defund the police 2.0. What do you mean by that?
FRANK GAFFNEY (GUEST): Well, as you said earlier, Steve, in 2020 the pretext of the Floyd death was used to mount violent attacks on not just government property and private property but law enforcement personnel. And the result of all of that was this huge effort to blame the police for the problem and say they needed to be defunded.
Well, if that doesn't sound like déjà vu all over again at the moment, I don't know what this is. The law enforcement personnel who are doing their assigned missions as well as they can under extraordinarily difficult circumstances, to say nothing of life threatening circumstances in some cases, are now being told we need to defund them effectively. I mean, whether it's disarming them or simply dismantling any protection that they have from being doxxed and thereby having not only their own lives put at risk but their families.
I mean, the question has to be asked, Steve. Not only is this, you know, defund the police 2.0, who are we thinking are gonna do these jobs under these circumstances? It is just as was the first go round. Predictably the case that you will see people bailing out of ICE, people refusing to work under these job conditions, people making the eminently sensible decision that if they — we don't have their back, they're out of there. And then where are we?
And I just have to say, Steve, I did a commentary this morning, I think you're referring to it, about this being a moment when actually we need ICE more than ever. And it's not just because of the, the so-called worst of the worst, the gang bangers and the drug cartels and this, I'm worried sick about what we are told is multiple divisions worth of Chinese soldiers who were brought in across Joe Biden's open borders.
And what Sam Faddis has just written up at AND magazine, one of his stupendous pieces informed by his own experience in his last duty station at the Central Intelligence Agency where he was responsible for countering weapons of mass destruction terrorism. And he's warning about the second biowarfare laboratory by the same guy who had the first one and possibly they think there may be 20 more of these things.
You put those Chinese soldiers in positions to use bioweapons that, according to Sam, maybe have a mortality rate of 60 to 90%. You're talking about mass destruction of the United States, the population, and that's what the blood of — will be on the hands of these Democrats and some Republicans who are trying to get rid of ICE. We need them more than ever now.
BANNON: They don't care, they'd rather keep the 20 million, that's how they keep power.

After an earlier setback for the Trump administration when House Republicans failed to advance a key procedural vote on a package of legislation including three crypto measures, President Donald Trump said late Tuesday he has made a deal with Republican members of Congress to advance the legislation on Wednesday.
Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform that he met in the Oval Office with 11 of the 12 GOP members needed to pass the package.
"After a short discussion, they have all agreed to vote tomorrow morning in favor of the Rule," Trump said. "Speaker of the House Mike Johnson was at the meeting via telephone, and looks forward to taking the Vote as early as possible."
Trump did not provide specifics about the deal.
In a lengthy statement released later, Johnson thanked Trump for helping lock down the necessary votes to advance the crypto legislation.
"I'm thankful for President Trump getting involved tonight to ensure that we can pass the GENIUS Act tomorrow and agreeing again to help us advance additional crypto legislation in the coming days," Johnson said, referencing the name of one of the bills.
Earlier Tuesday, a dozen House Republicans bucked Trump and Johnson to prevent the legislation from advancing on the floor -- joining the entire Democratic caucus -- and, at least temporarily, freezing activity in the House. The final tally was 196-223.
Johnson had said earlier that while he anticipated that there may be enough opposition to defeat the effort, he felt that it was "important" to try to advance the bills. Republicans have a narrow majority in the House -- with 220 Republicans compared to 212 Democrats.
### MORE: What to know about the GENIUS Act, a crypto regulation bill
Johnson said that he would attempt to work with Republican holdouts to answer questions.
The speaker explained that conservatives who voted against the rule want the crypto bills -- CLARITY, GENIUS and Anti CBDC Surveillance Act -- combined into one big package, rather than take separate standalone votes on each measure.
"This is the legislative process. We have some members who really, really want to emphasize the House's product," Johnson said. "They want to, want to push that and merge them together. We're trying to work with the White House and with our Senate partners on this. I think everybody is insistent that we're going to do all three, but some of these guys insist that it needs to be all in one package."
The intraparty rebellion comes after Trump strongly urged Republicans to vote in favor of advancing the crypto bills.
"The GENIUS Act is going to put our Great Nation lightyears ahead of China, Europe, and all others, who are trying endlessly to catch up, but they just can't do it," Trump posted on Truth Social Tuesday. "Digital Assets are the FUTURE, and we are leading by a lot! Get the first Vote done this afternoon (ALL REPUBLICANS SHOULD VOTE YES!)."
The no votes came from Reps. Andy Biggs, Tim Burchett, Michael Cloud, Andrew Clyde, Eli Crane, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Andy Harris, Anna Paulina Luna, Scott Perry, Chip Roy, Keith Self and Victoria Spartz. Majority Leader Steve Scalise also changed his vote to "no" to preserve the capability to call the measure back up for another attempted vote.
Luna, a Florida Republican, told ABC News that she is "pro-crypto," but voted against the procedural vote because she continues to have concerns about creating a "backdoor" to a Central Bank Digital Currency -- a worry echoed by Greene.
"I just voted NO on the Rule for the GENIUS Act because it does not include a ban on Central Bank Digital Currency and because Speaker Johnson did not allow us to submit amendments to the GENIUS Act," Greene, R-Ga., posted on X. "Americans do not want a government-controlled Central Bank Digital Currency. Republicans have a duty to ban CBDC. President Trump included a ban on CBDC in his January 23rd executive order and Congress must also include the ban on CBDC in the GENIUS Act."
### MORE: Trump's sons distance themselves from new Trump-branded crypto venture
The vote came during what the White House is calling "Crypto Week" and marks a rare instance when House Republicans have defied Trump's direction.
Trump, who launched his own crypto meme coin earlier this year, recently said he is a "fan of crypto" and called it a "very powerful industry" that the U.S. has "dominated."
"I'm president. And what I did do there is build an industry that's very important," Trump said last month. "If we didn't have it, China would."
Once a crypto skeptic, Trump and his family have fully immersed themselves in the cryptocurrency marketplace, developing not only the $TRUMP meme coin, but also a bitcoin mining firm, a stablecoin firm and a crypto reserve.
