Joshua Chad Brecheen (/brəˈkiːn/, brə-KEEN, born June 19, 1979) is a Native American politician who has served as the U.S. representative for Oklahoma's 2nd congressional district since 2023. A member of the Republican Party, he previously served in the Oklahoma Senate from 2010 to 2018. He is a citizen of the Choctaw Nation.
Early life and career
Joshua Chad Brecheen was born on June 19, 1979.[1] He attended Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant. In 1997, he was first elected as SE District Vice-president of the Oklahoma FFA. The next year, he was elected State FFA President, moved to Stillwater, and transferred to Oklahoma State University.[2] He served as State FFA President until 1999.[3]
After retiring from the FFA, Brecheen graduated from Oklahoma State University with a dual degree in animal science and agricultural communications.[2] In 2004, he was hired as a field representative for U.S. senator Tom Coburn, where he worked until his election to the Oklahoma Senate.[4] He owns a motivational speaking business, Brecheen Keynotes and Seminars, as well as Rawhide Dirtworks, an excavation service.[4]
Oklahoma Senate career
Brecheen filed to run for the Oklahoma Senate's 6th district in 2010.[5] He ran unopposed in the Republican primary and faced incumbent Democratic Senator Jay Paul Gumm.[6] Brecheen defeated Gumm in the November election.[7] The Tulsa World reported the 6th Senate district race as having the highest fundraising total for a State Senate seat in 2010, with Brecheen raising $217,548 and Gumm $289,786.[8]
During his first term, Brecheen filed a bill to repeal Oklahoma's Pet Breeders Act, which required breeders provide their animals with minimum veterinary care, food and water. The bill established fees that pet breeders would pay the state to cover the costs of inspections. Brecheen argued the bill punished law-abiding citizens.[9] He also filed a Senate resolution to have the Oklahoma Legislature meet every other year instead of annually and cut legislators pay,[10] and introduced legislation to cut the Art in Public Places program, which provided funding to public art projects in the state.[11] Brecheen also filed SB 554 to allow teachers to teach "the debate of creation vs. evolution" in Oklahoma public schools.[12]
Brecheen served in the Oklahoma Senate until 2018. He retired after two terms, citing a commitment to term limits.[4]
Brecheen was criticized by the National Center for Science Education for introducing several education bills modeled on anti-evolution bills from Texas, Tennessee, and Louisiana during his senate tenure.[13]

In 2022, Brecheen ran for Oklahoma's 2nd congressional district in a 14-candidate Republican primary to succeed retiring congressman Markwayne Mullin. Mullin retired to run in a special election for U.S. Senate.[14] He styled himself during the campaign as "Tom Coburn's protégé" and vowed to vote "no" on any tax increases.[15] Brecheen advanced to a runoff election with state Representative Avery Frix after placing second in the primary. He narrowly defeated Frix in the runoff, winning the nomination.[16] During the primary Brecheen's campaign was supported by $3.2 million in political action committee spending in support of his campaign or in opposition to Frix, including $1.8 million in support from a Club for Growth affiliated political action committee.[17] He defeated Democratic nominee Naomi Andrews and independent ["Bulldog" Ben Robinson](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%22Bulldog%22_Ben_Robinson ""Bulldog" Ben Robinson") in the general election.[18]

Tenure
On the last day of June 2023, Brecheen introduced the Patriotism Not Pride Act which, if passed, would bar the use of federal funds for Pride Month events and ban federal agencies from displaying the Pride flag.[20]
2023 Speaker election
During the first round of voting in the 2023 House Speaker election, Brecheen cast the sole vote for Representative Jim Banks.[21] He switched his support to Representative Jim Jordan on the second and third ballots,[22] then to Representative Byron Donalds for the next three ballots.[23] On the third day of the speakership election, Brecheen voted for Donalds again on the seventh ballot.[24] On the eighth ballot, he voted for Kevin Hern after Hern was nominated by Representative Lauren Boebert.[25] He voted for Hern again on the ninth, tenth, and 11th ballots.[24] He switched his support to Kevin McCarthy on the 12th ballot after McCarthy agreed to additional reforms to the House rules.[26]
Syria
In 2023, Brecheen was among 47 Republicans to vote in favor of H.Con.Res. 21 which directed President Joe Biden to remove U.S. troops from Syria within 180 days.[27][28]
Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023
Brecheen was among the 71 Republicans who voted against final passage of the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023 in the House.[29]
Israel
Brecheen voted to provide Israel with support following 2023 Hamas attack on Israel.[30][31]
Ukraine
In 2024, Brecheen voted against the $60 billion military aid package for Ukraine; The Washington Post reported that some of the funding would have supported defense jobs in his constituency.[32]

Religious organizations are slamming a Republican House probe, calling it a violation of their liberty, reports Religion News Service.
“It’s an invasion of religious liberty,” said Bishop Dwayne Royster, a United Church of Christ pastor who heads Faith in Action. Royster argues his group reserves the right to practice a form of faith “which says that there’s no strangers amongst us, that we’re all siblings.”
But Royster said Reps. Mark E. Green (R-Tenn.) and Josh Brecheen (R-Okla.) were anything but friends when they announced plans to probe more than 200 nongovernmental organizations earlier this month. The congressmen are accusing their targets of being “involved in providing services or support to inadmissible aliens during the Biden-Harris administration’s historic border crisis.”
READ MORE: ‘Economy is rigged': Robert Reich explains how 'Trump fooled the majority of Americans
Royster told Religion News the probe was “designed to have a chilling effect” on organizations like Faith in Action. He added: “I will be damned if they’re going to stop us from doing what we feel mandated and called to do by God: To care for other human beings to the best of our ability.”
The chairmen are requesting each non-governmental organization complete a survey of questions about government grants, contracts, and disbursements they received, lawsuits they are petitioning and amicus briefs they have filed in any lawsuit brought against the federal government. The survey also demands organizations reveal any legal service, translation service, transportation, housing, sheltering, or any other form of assistance they’ve provided to non-citizen residents or unaccompanied non-citizen children since January 2021.
Green and Breechen, who chair the House Subcommittee on Oversight, Investigations and Accountability, expressly targeted the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Catholic Charities USA, the Council on American-Islamic Relations and Global Refuge for the probe. But a list provided to Religion News Service indicates more than 30 religious groups have received the lawmakers' letter.
Royster said the questionnaire wasn’t relevant to Faith in Action’s work, and said he had no intention of responding to it.

Unitarian Universalist Association general counsel Adrienne K. Walker denied her denomination receiving any grants, contracts or disbursements from the Biden administration, and she criticized the probe as appearing “to target the UUA and its members’ fundamental rights to exercise their religious practices protected under the First Amendment to the Constitution and the Religious Freedom Restoration Act.”
United States Conference of Catholic Bishops' spokesperson Chieko Noguchi said USCCB plans to respond to the survey but argues that the USCCB has a 45-year agreement with the federal government to serve groups of people authorized by that same government to receive assistance.

Representative Josh Brecheen, a Republican representing Oklahoma's 2nd Congressional District, has been associated with Christian Nationalism based on several actions and statements.
Here's a breakdown of the key points:
- Association with Christian Nationalist Flags: Brecheen has been observed flying the "Appeal to Heaven" flag and the Christian flag at the Capitol, both of which were carried by individuals involved in the January 6th riot.
- Participation in Right-Wing Religious Gatherings: He attended a 2024 worship gathering in the U.S. Capitol rotunda led by Sean Feucht, a figure known for promoting Christian nationalism.
- Resolution Condemning a Sermon: Brecheen introduced a resolution in Congress to condemn a sermon given at a National Prayer Service, calling it a "distorted message" and a "display of political activism". This action has been criticized by some faith groups as violating religious freedom.
- Viewpoint on Christian Nationalism: One source states that Brecheen "trots out a “myth of the nation” which unites Christian nationalists over ideas of “Christian America” as an inheritance, as justification to install evangelical Christianity in America by coercion".
In addition to these actions, it's worth noting:
- He is a self-proclaimed Christian and identifies with the faith community.
- He believes in restoring original Constitutional principles and addressing the national deficit.
Brecheen has supported amendments and bills that would:
- Prohibit funding for diversity, equity, and inclusion programs at environmental agencies.
- Cut U.S. contributions to the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
- Cut funding for the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).
- Block efforts to advance environmental justice.
He also celebrated the Supreme Court ruling against the Biden administration's Waters of the United States (WOTUS) rule, and voted in favor of the "Lower Energy Costs Act", according to his website. Brecheen has also opposed regulations on emissions standards for vehicles.

The issue of IRA subsidies is not just one of fiscal responsibility, it’s one of national security. If the Senate fails to deliver on President @realdonaldtrump’s promise to end the Biden Admin’s Green New Scam, it will bear the blame for enabling Chinese energy dominance & the CCP’s continued access to our grid.

Excellent post by @adamnmichel on which energy subsidies receive the lion’s share of money from the government. My long held position has been there should be no subsidization and that the free market alone should dictate energy utilization. The lack of truthful analysis around

The reconciliation bill cannot be watered down. Repealing the Biden Administration’s IRA subsidies is critical—not only to honor our commitment to American taxpayers—but to combat Chinese companies who benefit from these credits and threaten our national security. The IRA subsidies line the pockets of large corporations and our foreign adversaries. Our hope and prayer is that our colleagues in the Senate recognize how dire the situation is and preserve our provision to end the Green New Scam under Trump’s term. The version we’re hearing of does not bode well.

These subsidies are fiscal failures that distort our markets and burden taxpayers.
We need an affordable energy policy, not high-cost, taxpayer-subsidized incentives that enrich unreliable energy producers & punish states like Oklahoma.
