A preeminent bankruptcy law scholar who significantly disagrees with Warren on policy told Media Matters that the notion Warren supported pro-corporate bankruptcy laws is “baffling” and “ridiculous”

WRITTEN BY TIMOTHY JOHNSON

PUBLISHED 02/03/20 11:59 AM EST

In his new book, conservative author Peter Schweizer argued that Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) is responsible for federal bankruptcy laws that big businesses have used to their advantage. But Schweizer’s Warren criticism is based on a fabricated and wildly inaccurate history of bankruptcy law, and one expert in the field told Media Matters that Schweizer has a "fundamental misunderstanding of what bankruptcy is about.”

Schweizer, a Breitbart senior editor-at-large and president of the right-wing think tank Government Accountability Institute, is best-known for his 2015 book Clinton Cash, which was riddled with errors, fabrications, and distortions. Despite his sloppy work, Schweizer was aided in promoting his claims by a compliant mainstream press that failed to rigorously investigate his work or needlessly gave his allegations oxygen, as The Washington Post and The New York Times did when they made “exclusive agreements” with Schweizer to promote his work.

Now, as the 2020 presidential election approaches, Schweizer has released another book, Profiles in Corruption: Abuse of Power by America’s Progressive Elite, that levels corruption allegations against several Democrats running for president and other progressive politicians. In a chapter about Warren -- who before being elected a U.S. senator in 2012 was a professor at Harvard Law School specializing in bankruptcy legal issues -- Schweizer claims that during the 1990s, she was responsible for Congress’ adoption of pro-corporate bankruptcy laws. The claim, which is false, would be contrary to Warren’s presidential campaign platform. ...

HarperCollins Buys Thomas Nelson, Will Control 50% of Christian Publishing Market

Where will Thomas Nelson fit in Murdoch's empire, which already includes Zondervan?

Ted Olsen

[ posted 10/31/2011 02:38PM ]

HarperCollins Publishers today announced it was buying Christian/inspirational publisher Thomas Nelson "for an undisclosed sum." It's a huge move since the company will now reportedly control about half of the Christian publishing market.

The question now is how the acquisition will play with Zondervan, Thomas Nelson's chief competition. HarperCollins, which is owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation, acquired Zondervan in 1988. (It also owns religion and spirituality imprint HarperOne.) Thomas Nelson says it is reportedly the largest Christian publisher in the world and the seventh largest trade-book publisher in the United States. Zondervan says it is the world's leading Bible publisher.

In 2009, then-Thomas Nelson CEO Michael Hyatt reported that his publisher and Zondervan control half of the Christian publishing market–a percentage that had held relatively steady over the previous few years.

It's been a long road for Thomas Nelson, which was founded in Edinburgh in 1798 and gained religious prominence in the U.S. through the publication of the American Standard Version and Revised Standard Version of the Bible. In 1960, it merged with The Thomson Organization (which later merged with Reuters), but was bought out by eager Lebanese-American Bible publisher Sam Moore in 1969. Moore ran the company until Hyatt succeeded him in 2004.

By then Thomas Nelson had gotten into and out of the music business, swallowing Christian publishing powerhouse Word, Inc. in the early 1990s. In 2006, the company, which had been publicly traded since Moore's Royal Publishers was first listed on the exchange in 1961, was bought for $473 million and began operating as a private company. Private equity firm Kohlberg and Company acquired a majority ownership last year, and put former HarperCollins Worldwide CEO Jane Friedman on its board.

Lucrative and Questionable Book Deals: Murdoch's $4.5 Million wasn't the first

**The 1995 Murdoch Deal**---The 1984 Book Deal
The 1995 Murdoch Deal

You probably heard something about Newt's book scandal. He was offered first $2.5 million, then $4.5 million by Harper Collins, a publishing company owned by Rupert Murdoch, who also owns the Fox TV network and newspapers and TV stations around the world. Murdoch has been having problems with a complaint by NBC that Fox is a foreign owned TV network, which is against US law.

In the past, Harper Collins has offered million dollar book contracts to several conservative politicians in countries where Murdoch was having regulatory trouble, including England (Margaret Thatcher, Jeffrey Archer) and China (Deng Xiaoping's daughter). A week after the initial offer, Newt met with Rupert Murdoch - and Murdoch's legislative lobbyist - to discuss politics, including the NBC complaint. As facts about the deal were made public, and even Republicans criticized him, Gingrich decided to give up the $4.5 million advance for a still-lucrative deal based on royalties.

Gingrich's story kept changing through the controversy. First, Newt's spokesman said that Murdoch knew nothing about Gingrich and the book deal. On Friday January 13, Newt's spokesman admitted that Murdoch actually met Newt on a park bench the week before the deal was made, but didn't talk about it. He also said he knew nothing about Murdoch's lobbyist being at their meeting. The next day, he admitted the lobbyist was there, but claimed he didn't say so because no one asked.

Newt also said repeatedly that the book wasn't his idea; that a literary agent named Lynn Chu had sought him out and proposed it. After Ms. Chu said that Gingrich's associate Jeff Eisenach called her first on Newt's behalf, Eisenach and Newt's spokesman admitted that was true.

The 1984 Book Deal

Murdoch's book deal wasn't the first lucrative and controversial book deal Newt engineered. In 1983he established a limited partnership in Atlanta called COS Limited, which pulled together about two dozen of his biggest campaign contributors to finance his book.

The former administrator of his congressional offices in Georgia, Dolores Adamson, resigned over the deal. "The manuscript was put together in the district office using office equipment," she said. "He would just come in and say 'This is what I want to do.' I would say, 'This is not ethical," but after a while he didn't listen." That office equipment, of course, was paid for by US taxpayers including you.

ReganBooks was an American bestselling imprint or division of HarperCollins book publishing house (parent company is News Corporation), headed by editor and publisher Judith Regan, started in 1994 and ended in late 2006. During its existence, Regan was called, by LA Weekly, "the world's most successful publisher".[1] The division reportedly earned $120 million a year.[2] ReganBooks focused on celebrity authors and controversial topics, sometimes from recent tabloids.[3][4]

Prominent ReganBooks titles include Jenna Jameson’s How to Make Love Like a Porn Star, biographies by General Tommy Franks, professional wrestler Mick Foley, and radio talk show host Howard Stern, three different books on the Scott Peterson case, and those by political commentator Sean Hannity. Though ultimately owned by politically active Rupert Murdoch, ReganBooks disavowed any political agenda, publishing, for example, books both supportive of and critical of George W. Bush.[5]

In August 2004, ReganBooks had three books on the New York Times best-seller list, including the top two non-fiction positions, and the highest profit ratio at HarperCollins.[6]

In 2005, ReganBooks announced plans to move from Manhattan to Los Angeles, making it one of the first major book publishers to move from the east to the west coast.[1][3][4]

In November 2006, ReganBooks announced plans to publish O.J. Simpson's book If I Did It; publication was later cancelled by News Corporation chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch.[2] After the public fallout Newsweek reported, "Regan's meddlesome-free days are almost certainly over" and Murdoch will be "clamping" down on control.[2]

On December 15, 2006 Regan was fired from HarperCollins, allegedly over anti-Semitic comments.[7] The staff at ReganBooks were reassigned within the HarperCollins General Book Group.[8] The New York Times reported that ReganBooks' offices were closed and "a stunned Ms. Regan was confronted by security guards who arrived with boxes and ordered her to leave."[7] Regan sued News Corporation for $100 million for defamation over the anti-Semitism charge, asserting that it was "completely fabricated"; in January 2008 News Corporation settled the lawsuit and publicly stated, "After carefully considering the matter, we accept Ms. Regan's position that she did not say anything that was anti-Semitic in nature, and further believe that Ms. Regan is not anti-Semitic."[9]

Judith Regan (born August 17, 1953, in Massachusetts) is an American editor, producer, book publisher, and television and radio talk show host.

Regan was born on August 17, 1953, and grew up in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, and Bay Shore, Long Island. She graduated from Bay Shore High School in 1971.[1] She attended Vassar College, receiving her degree in English and Art History in 1975. She went on to study art at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and voice with a Juilliard School of Music instructor. In 1977, she was recruited by The National Enquirer while working at Harvard University's Institute of Politics.

She is the mother of a son and a daughter and lives in New York City and Los Angeles.

In the early 1980s, Regan wrote for and edited a number of publications and produced a number of television shows. In the mid 1980s, she signed a majorsix-figure deal with Simon & Schuster to write two books, including a study of the history of the American family. She later canceled the contract in order to stay home with her young son, who had suffered a devastating head injury after being hit by a drunken driver. Simon & Schuster then offered her a job as aneditor and she accepted provided she could work from home in order to care for her son.

While at Simon & Schuster, Regan worked with a wide range of authors, from Howard Stern to Rush Limbaugh, while discovering and editing novelists such as Wally Lamb, Jess Walter, Walter Kirn, and Douglas Coupland.[2] New York Magazine wrote,"Judith is, hands down, the most successful editor in the book business; not only has she sold millions of pallets of books, but she's put a decided spin on the culture, too (she almost single-handedly moved Rush Limbaugh and Howard Stern off of the radio and out into the mass market), but she isn't just Rush and Howard; her oeuvre includes O.J. prosecutor Christopher Darden, Gen-Xer Douglas Coupland, Oprah novelist Wally Lamb, and diet-category-killer The Zone). She is said to be responsible for a king's ransom of the HarperCollins bottom line."[3] Judith also had her own imprint, ReganBooks, for fourteen years at HarperCollins. Regan created a line of books with over one billion dollars in sales.

From 1994 to 2004, Regan hosted a number of talk shows, including her own Judith Regan Tonight, a weekend talk show on the Fox News Channel.

Regan's first acquisition was an unknown first-time novelist named Gregory Maguire, author of Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. The book went on to sell over 10 million copies.

Additional books she created, art directed, marketed, edited and produced include Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, Wicked and Son of a Witch, also by Gregory Maguire; Stupid White Men by Michael Moore; Private Parts and Miss America by Howard Stern; The Game: Penetrating the Secret Society of Pickup Artists by Neil Strauss; Story: Substance, Structure, Style, and the Principles of Screenwriting by Robert McKee; Shabby Chic by Rachel Ashwell; She's Come Undone and I Know This Much Is True by Wally Lamb; Juiced by Jose Canseco; Domicilium Decoratus by Kelly Wearstler; Shampoo Planet and Girlfriend in a Coma by Douglas Coupland; Ruby Ridge and Land of the Blind by Jess Walter and American Soldier by Tommy Franks.

In 2006, Fox announced that Regan had interviewed O.J. Simpson for over four hours and had gotten Simpson to confess to the notorious 1994 murders of which he had been acquitted. The confession was to air on the Fox network and Regan was to publish O.J. Simpson's written confession as a book entitledIf I Did It.[4]

After harsh criticism, News Corporation cancelled both the book and the interview with Simpson that was to air on the Fox Network.[5][6] The book went on to be published and became a #1 bestseller. They fired Regan and Regan sued and won a reported $25 million for defamation and wrongful dismissal.

A 2007, season-17 episode of Law & Order titled "Murder Book" (episode 387–1716) features a character (Serena Darby) who is based loosely on Regan.[8]

In a 2005, season-4 episode of Law & Order: Criminal Intent called "My Good Name," the media adviser to a Bernie Kerik-like character takes a phone call from a woman named "Judith" modeled after Regan.[citation needed]

In 2006, she was parodied in a sketch in a season-12 episode (#1207) of the television show MADtv. In the sketch, two actors appear, one playing her and another playing O.J. Simpson.

In 2012, Regan appeared on Dr. Drew on the issue of single-mother child rearing.[episode needed]

In 2012, Regan made several appearances on The Joy Behar Show.
