CNN's Jake Tapper issued a strong fact-check after claims from President Donald Trump's secretary of defense alleged there were people leaking information from the department.

According to Secretary Pete Hegseth, leaks put their brave American soldiers in danger.

"I have delegated tasking authority to the [Department of Defense's] Office of General Counsel, empowering OGC to request and receive all information, records and support across the department concerning media leak investigations," Hegseth said in an X video.

Tapper responded with, "I know of one leak that put our brave pilots at risk!"

He posted a link to the full inspector general's report revealing that Hegseth used the Signal app to leak classified information to his family outside the Pentagon.

He specifically quoted the significant finding that "The Secretary sent nonpublic DOD information identifying the quantity and strike times of manned U.S. aircraft over hostile territory over an unapproved, unsecure network approximately 2 to 4 hours before the execution of those strikes. Using a personal cell phone to conduct official business and send nonpublic DOD information through Signal risks potential compromise of sensitive DoD information, which could cause harm to DOD personnel and mission objectives."

The full report also had screen captures of the secretary's message that outlined every detail about conditions and the mission ahead of the U.S. strike in Yemen against Houthi rebels.

Hegseth risked "endangering U.S. troops by using the Signal messaging app to share military plans before the first attack in Yemen," the IG ruled.

Tapper went on to cite the reports finding that "if this information had fallen into the hands of U.S. adversaries, Houthi forces might have been able to counter U.S. forces or reposition personnel and assets to avoid planned U.S. strikes…”

“Even though these events did not ultimately occur, the secretary’s actions created a risk to operational security that could have resulted in failed U.S. mission objectives and potential harm to U.S. pilots," Tapper added from the report.

"Some call them whistleblowers. When they’re alerting the public to government lies and malfeasance, for instance," Tapper later added.

Former DOJ prosecutor cheers investigation of Trump ‘charlatan’ US attorney

Outgoing "weaponization" chief and Donald Trump appointee Ed Martin is facing an ethics investigation, and former prosecutor Elie Honigsays it couldn’t happen to a better person.

VID]

“Any time you give enormous prosecutorial power to a charlatan, to a person like Ed Martin—who had zero prior prosecutorial experience before he took this job and came into an office with an explicit political agenda—you’re going to wind up in trouble,” Honig told CNN anchor Jake Tapper.

Martin, a Department of Justice employee, is facing ethics charges after he sent a Feb. 2025 letter to the Georgetown University Law Center alleging that a whistleblower reported them for teaching "diversity, equity, and inclusion." Before law center officials even responded to his letter, however, he said he would impose sanctions on Georgetown by telling his staff not to hire any students from the school.

A Tuesday filing shows Disciplinary Counsel Hamilton "Phil" Fox III of the D.C. Bar alleged on Friday that while working for the federal government, Martin violated the First and Fifth Amendments with his letter, and that “Martin knew or should have known" this at the time.

"Acting in his official capacity and speaking on behalf of the government, he used coercion to punish or suppress a disfavored viewpoint, the teaching and promotion of DEI," the court filing says. "He demanded that Georgetown Law relinquish its free speech and religious rights in order to obtain a benefit, employment opportunities for its students."

If the D.C. Bar determined Martin did indeed blatantly violate the Constitution is could suspend or cancel his law license.

“During his time as U.S. attorney, Martin made various wildly inappropriate public statements,”said Honig, a former assistant United States Attorney and director of the New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice. “He launched various explicitly political investigations and now … he's facing ethics charges over that letter to Georgetown law school, where he [threatened] to punish their students … and I may cut off their funding.”

“So now he will have to face an ongoing proceeding where he may lose his bar license. And for the first time, Jake, Ed Martin seems to be facing some level of accountability.”

Multiple agencies within President Donald Trump's administration have a habit of copying rhetoric from far-right extremist hate groups in posts to official social media accounts, according to CNN host Jake Tapper.

In a Thursday segment, Tapper observed how the U.S. Department of Labor recently posted a video depicting President George Washington over various images from history with the text: "One Homeland. One People. One Heritage. Remember who you are, American." Tapper pointed out that this was "disturbingly similar to the Nazi slogan: 'Ein volk. Ein reich. Ein führer,' which means: 'One people. One realm. One leader.'"

"Of course, it's not the same phrase, but there are critics out there, including some conservatives, who suggest that there are echoes that are disturbing," Tapper said. "The Labor Department did not respond to repeated requests for comment on this."

Tapper also called attention to a post from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), showing a B-2 stealth bomber flying over a man on horseback. The post includes the text "we'll have our home again." The CNN host noted that this is the same name of a song with strong anti-immigrant themes that "has a lot of appeal to white nationalist groups."

"The song lyrics feature lines that evoke sentiments often expressed by conservatives about immigration, such as, 'in our own towns we're foreigners now,'" Tapper said. "And perhaps it was chosen simply for that reason. Or maybe it's just a coincidence."

While the Department of Labor didn't respond to CNN's request for comment, DHS told the network the phrase was a reference to the "20-plus million illegal aliens invading the country." Tapper also quoted the DHS as saying "this is why people don't take the media seriously" when asked about criticism from conservatives.

Finally, Tapper displayed a post from the official White House X account showing two Greenlandic dog sled teams facing a crossroads, with one leading toward the White House and the other leading toward the Great Wall of China and Moscow's Red Square with the text: "Which way, Greenland man?" Tapper acknowledged that while "which way, blank man" is a common meme, it originated from "avowed white supremacist" author William Gaylord Simpson, who wrote a book entitled: "Which Way, Western Man?"

"Now, we're sure that lots of folks familiar with online meme culture are completely unaware of the hateful origins of that meme. And that could, of course, be true for the Trump administration as well," Tapper said. "It's entirely possible that President Trump's rather meme-happy group is using some of these images with no idea that they might have repugnant origins or echoes. But these are just a few examples of many. And after a certain number of them, one wonders if this is all accidental, if it's all a coincidence, why isn't there an effort to be a little bit more sensitive about it?"

March 13, 2025, edition of CNN's The Lead with Jake Tapper

JAKE TAPPER (HOST): They're pretty explicitly not only misogynistic, but I think Andrew Tate's been accused of antisemitism, too. How widespread is their influence in the MAGA movement?

MATT SHEA (GUEST): It's incredibly widespread, and they are allied to the highest levels of the Trump administration. I mean, for example, Paul Ingrassia, one of Tate's lawyers who defended him in the human trafficking case he's being investigated for, is now a top White House official. And, so, the alliance is there, and Trump probably thinks that the Tate brothers helped to radicalize a large portion of young men towards the MAGA movement and helped him get elected.

TAPPER: There's obviously a right of free speech, and they and their supporters have a right to express their views, however repugnant, misogynistic, antisemitic others may find them. But one wonders, is there a risk for people in the MAGA movement, Don Jr. or whomever, embracing them?

SHEA: 100%. I mean, I think in terms of pure crazy factor, this might be the craziest thing the Trump administration has done so far. I mean, allegedly pressuring the Romanian government to release two people who are being investigated for human trafficking and serial rape -- charges that they deny. But I've spoken to some of these alleged victims. There's at least 48 alleged victims in all of the cases against the Tates currently.

I mean, why is it not political suicide to align yourself with these people? That's the question, and it may turn out to be. But I think it's very surprising Dana White hasn't said anything about this yet. The UFC hasn't said anything about this yet. I'm wondering if Mark Zuckerberg is worried because he, of course, recently added Dana White to the board for Meta, presumably because, you know, it gave him some sort of cool factor in his new drive to be considered more masculine.

CNN's Jake Tapper cornered far-right White House policy adviser Stephen Miller, as he tried to justify the Trump administration's discretionary freeze on federal grantsannounced by the Office of Management and Budget — and blame the media for the public's confusion on whether they're about to lose access to critical support programs.

"So let's just walk through this, because obviously there's confusion," said Tapper. "Is this pause going to affect Medicaid?"

"It does not affect any service that the government is required to provide, does not affect any entitlement, does not affect any service to citizens, does not affect any individual benefit, any public assistance program or anything of that nature," said Miller. "So we found, after the president had issued a pause on funding to [non-governmental organizations] that were settling illegal immigrants, we found that bureaucrats at HHS were trying to funnel billions of more dollars to those resettlement agencies and try to get around the executive order. It became clear that bureaucrats were still trying to funnel unapproved discretionary grants of funds to their pet projects."

"So let's get into that, because a number of government-funded organizations — so these are organizations like Meals on Wheels, right? Their job, their mission — it's a private organization, they get grants from the federal government, they feed seniors. Meals on Wheels is currently in the dark. They don't know, does this order affect us? Does this mean we're not going to have any more funding coming in? They feed like 2 million seniors. So I'm just wondering, first of all, why a pause? An investigation, sure, I get that. Auditing? Sure. Why a pause?"

Miller dodged the question, redirecting back to his complaints about the civil service directing grants.

"Joe Biden gave just one NGO responsible for resettling illegal aliens $3 billion, with a B. $3 billion! President Trump, when he said drain the swamp, he meant it."

"Okay. I don't think anybody's taking issue with, if you find money that is being disbursed in an inappropriate way, halting it," said Tapper. "I think what the confusion is, is this seemed to a lot of groups and a lot of states, Republicans, Democrats, independents, like a very sweeping order. And there is confusion ... we just talked to Congressman Don Bacon, a Republican, a Trump supporter. We just interviewed him. He said that there was a lot of confusion."

"Created by the media, Jake," insisted Miller.

But Tapper insisted that much of the confusion and anger is within Trump's own party.

"Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski said, quote, 'nobody really knows how long,' unquote, this review of these federal funds is going to last. And she said it's, quote, 'been a big challenge,' unquote, to get answers from the Trump administration. So here's an opportunity. How long is this review going to take? And when does the federal funding for these programs resume?"

Miller once again refused to answer. As Tapper repeatedly asked this question, Miller finally said, "I am sorry that the media has falsely reported on this story."

"I don't know what you're talking about in terms of false reports," shot back Tapper. "It was a broadly written executive order."

cNN host Jake Tapper on Wednesday blasted Donald Trump and Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s plan to join forces to take over medical government agencies.

"I'm gonna let him go wild on health," Trump said this week, referring to Kennedy. "I'm gonna let him go wild on the food. I'm going to let him go wild on medicines."

Tapper told viewers, "So that's Donald Trump describing a role for Robert F. Kennedy Jr. — if he were to win a second term — RFK Jr. seemingly affirmed the former president's words."

The CNN host rolled a clip of Kennedy saying, "Earlier this week President Trump promised me as control of the public health agencies which are HHS, and it's agencies, CDC FDA, NIH, which is key to making America healthy."

Tapper then said, "Just a reminder, RFK Jr has no medical license, and has made wildly inaccurate claims about all sorts of medicines. Frankly, this is what he said — kind of a deranged remark — about coronavirus."

Tapper played a clip, in which Kennedy could be heard saying, "In fact, Covid-19, there's an argument that it is ethnically targeted. A great proportion of Covid-19 is targeted to attack Caucasians and Black people. The people who are most immune are Ashkenazi Jews and Chinese."

Tapper said he had "spoken with people in John Kelly's circle, and I've spoken with people in the Kamala Harris campaign."

"They say there's been no communication the entire time," the CNN host explained. "So where did that come from?"

Republican strategist's attempt to minimize former President Donald Trump's threat of "enemies within" spurred a swift fact check and heated debate on CNN Monday morning.

Conservative commentator Shermichael Singleton was checked by CNN anchor Jim Acosta as he tried to claim Trump's threat to sic the military on political enemies was limited only to those who live in the U.S. without citizenship status.

"I think he's talking about immigration," Singleton said. "And when you look at—"

The video player is currently playing an ad.

"No, no, no," interrupted Acosta. "He was talking about what he called radical left people in this country. Americans. Political opponents."

Singleton shrugged off what Acosta described as a "dangerous" threat — arguing Republicans cared more about policy than rhetoric — and in doing so outraged Democratic strategist Julia Roginsky.

"Let me just say something right now," Roginsky said. "This is not Donald Trump saying crazy stuff...he's done this before."

Roginsky argued Trump meant what he said at a Coachella rally over the weekend that he'd bully Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) into supporting his border control policies by threatening to withhold "fire money....for all the forest fires."

She pointed to recent reports from two former staffers who said Trump tried to block wildfire relief from reaching California in 2018 until he was shown voter data proving supporters lived there and raised a crucial concern.

"There were people around him [during his first term] to stop the worst impulses...they're not going to be there this time around," she said. "He's basically letting the voters know that, you know, this is what you're voting for."

When Acosta asked if Democrats needed to do more to call out Trump's authoritarian rhetoric, Roginsky replied with an incredulous shake of the head and a figurative finger pointed at his industry.

"The media has not done enough to call this out," Roginsky snapped back. "Here you have a fascist — and General Milley is right because all of the markers of a fascist exist in Donald Trump — and yet our news media has not done enough, by any stretch of the imagination, to call this out."

As proof, Roginsky pointed to intense media scrutiny of President Joe Biden's age and Gov. Tim Walz' (D-MN) location during the Tiananmen Square protests 35 years ago.

Singleton, given a chance to respond, interestingly did not slap back with a defense of his political party — but of colleagues in the media he argued could not be blamed for focusing more important issues than Trump's rhetoric.

"We have covered it," he said. "i just think there are far more consequential issues that impact people's day-to-day lives."

"With all do respect," Roginsky replied, "Take a look at the ratio. This is an existential problem."

Democratic incumbent President Joe Biden and presumptive 2024 Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump have agreed to two debates: the first hosted by CNN in Atlanta on June 27, the second by ABC News on September 10.

June 27 is early for a presidential debate, as the Republican National Convention won't be held until July 15-18 in Milwaukee — and its Democratic counterpart isn't until August 19-22 in Chicago. Biden's supporters view the June 27 debate as a golden opportunity for the president, as it will give him a chance to hammer Trump issue by issue and, they hope, improve his poll numbers. Many polls released in May have showed Biden narrowly trailing Trump by single digits in key swing states.

But some far-right pundits at Fox News are furious about the debates, including Laura Ingraham, Sean Hannity and Jesse Watters.

READ MORE:**Biden 'heavily' investing in these 3 states that are 'key to the whole election': analysis**

Ingraham complained that Biden needs a "game changer" performance and is hoping to get it "with the help of" CNN hosts Dana Bash and Jake Tapper.

Watters sarcastically commented, "Both moderators say Trump's Hitler, so the debate will be fair and balanced. Is Tapper going to cut the cameras away from Trump to fact-check him? We'll have to see."

Watters also attacked ABC News' George Stephanopoulos, saying that he "praised the deep state and said Trump's a threat to democracy" and adding, "I’m sure they'll be calling balls and strikes.”

READ MORE:[Biden campaign hammers Trump over infamous COVID comment

Hannity slammed Tapper as a "radical left-wing partisan talk show host" who is "masquerading as a journalist" and claimed that CNN "is filled with left-wing hacks who we know hate" Trump.

The Daily Beast's William Vaillancourt observes, "It didn’t take long at all for some of Fox News' most-watched hosts to frame next month's debate between President Joe Biden and Donald Trump, which was announced Wednesday morning, as unfair to the presumptive GOP nominee."

Although Fox News hosts have been attacking CNN and ABC News as too biased to be hosting the debates, they haven't had a lot to say about the controversy that surrounded the right-wing cable news channel's coverage of the last U.S. presidential election.

Fox News was sued by Dominion Voting Systems and its competitor Smartmatic after promoting the false, thoroughly debunked claim that their equipment was used to help Biden steal the 2020 presidential election from Trump. In 2023, Fox News agreed to a $787.5 million settlement with Dominion, although Smartmatic's $2.7 billion lawsuit against Fox News is ongoing.

READ MORE:[How Fox News' Trump trial coverage became an exercise in 'unintended hilarity': columnist

In an op-ed published on May 16, the Daily Beast's David Rothkopf doesn't agree with far-right claims that CNN and ABC News are too biased to be hosting the presidential debates. But he does argue that the debates could be a golden opportunity for Biden, as Trump is "out of practice" when it comes to debating as well as "bad at it."

Moreover, Rothkopf argues, the debates give Biden a chance to hammer Trump on issue after issue.

"In the view of those close to Biden," Rothkopf writes, "Trump's got a serious problem on the issues. He's on the wrong side of the American public on many of the policy questions most important to them. For example, Trump keeps proclaiming he is the one responsible for the repeal of Roe v. Wade. "

Rothkopf adds, "Almost two-thirds of all women and over six out of ten men support legal abortion according to a recent Pew report.… (Trump) loves Vladimir Putin, for example. In a Pew poll last year, 91 percent of Americans indicated they have an unfavorable view of Russia, with 62 percent having views that are very unfavorable."

READ MORE:**Mary Trump: Here's why Ivanka and Don Jr. haven't show up to their father’s 'tawdry' trial**

Trump still knows how to fire up his hardcore supporters at MAGA rallies. But Rothkopf stresses that the debate format is problematic for Trump given his lack of self-discipline.

"Trump's defective character is so clear, and the danger he presents is so great, that the current president will have a hard time looking worse in comparison," Rothkopf writes. "The contrasts between the two men and their beliefs could not be starker."

CNN anchor Jake Tapper on Tuesday evening dove into the alternative realities that United States Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia) has relied upon to build her political brand.

"Name a deranged conspiracy theory and this woman believes it," Tapper said of Greene, a self-avowed right-wing Christian nationalist who was first elected to Congress in 2020 and immediately supported former President Donald Trump's efforts to overturn President Joe Biden's landslide victory. "QAnon? Check."

Greene said in video recordings on November 26th, 2017:

Many in our government are actively worshiping Satan.

Q is anonymous but he just seems to be completely for the good.

[READ MORE: 'Abomination': Marjorie Taylor Greene suggests pastor Raphael Warnock is not a Christian

Tapper noted that Greene has embraced other debunked, fringe beliefs. "9/11 truthism? You bet," he said.

Greene, November 1st, 2018:

The so-called plane that crashed into the Pentagon, it's odd. There's never any evidence shown for a plane in the Pentagon.

What about "mass shootings staged by the US government? Of course!" Tapper added.

Greene, undated:

How do you get avid gun owners and people that support the Second Amendment to give up their guns and go along with anti-gun legislation? How do you do that? Maybe you accomplish that by performing a mass shooting into a crowd that is very likely to be conservative. Is that what happened in Las Vegas?

"No, it's not," Tapper affirmed. He then recalled the alarming tactics that Greene employed to seize power:

In the long ago political past of last year, it looked as though all of this crazy talk was too much for Republican Party leaders to stop. And after a bunch of past statements were unearthed, in which Greene indicated support for executing Democrats among other hideous comments, the House of Representatives voted to strip Marjorie Taylor Greene of her committee assignments. And eleven members of her own party backed the move. It was supposed to be a political death sentence.

But, as Greene's extremism became more mainstream in her party, and her fundraising prowess and MAGA celebrity grew, so did her standing in the Republican Party. She sat front row as House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy rolled out his plans for the Republican takeover in November.

And in recent days, she told 'The New York Times,' 'I think that to be the best Speaker of the House and to please the base, he's [Kevin McCarthy] going to have to give me a lot of power and a lot of leeway. And if he doesn't, they're going to be very unhappy about it... and that's not in any way a threat at all.'

'Cesspool of hate': Jake Tapper explores Gab's digital netherworld of 'hideously racist' posts and 'Nazism'

David Badash and The New Civil Rights Movement October 18, 2022

CNN’s Jake Tapper says the far-right social media platform Gab, run by an antisemitic Christian nationalist, has “hideously racist” posts and embedded “Nazism” as part of its “popular” offerings – and says after he reported his findings founder Andrew Torba called him the “son of the Devil” and claimed the site hosts “pro-life” and “Christian content.”

Tapper on Monday took a walk into the world of far-right social media platforms, after Kanye West announced his intention to buy the flailing site Parler, and glanced at Facebook and Twitter as well, but says the so-called “free speech” sites on the far-right are filled with hate – and that “the hate is the whole point.”

Tapper says of the far-right sites he looked at, Gab has “the fewest rules” and “the lowest standards” when it comes to content moderation.

“I signed up for Gab this morning. I clicked on ‘Explore,’ which took me to ‘popular posts across Gab.’ I came in with an open mind and immediately Gab hit me with this post: ‘We are in a wartime but it’s a quiet war perpetrated by the Jew,’ with a picture of Adolf Hitler,” Tapper told CNN viewers.

“And there was plenty more where that came from. The ‘N-word is super big on Gab. It is a cesspool of hate,” Tapper observed.

And while Gab “takes precautions,” it “doesn’t seem to care about hate speech.”

“The more speech I saw on Gab this afternoon, was more speech extolling Nazis and more speech engaging in Holocaust denial, and more speech sharing more hideously racist posts than I’ve ever seen in one place in my life,” Tapper said. “I saw less of it but still too much of it on Parler today.”

“It’s high time we recognize that the hate on many of these far-right sites is not just an unfortunate result of belief in free speech. The Hate is the whole point.”

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) calls Gab a “haven for hate and disinformation,” and “an online hub for extremist and conspiratorial content.”

“Gab quickly became known as a platform used by conspiracy theorists, white nationalists, neo-Nazis, members of militias and influential figures among the alt-right,” the ADL adds. “Over the last two years, Torba has worked to insert Gab, himself and Christian nationalism into mainstream society and politics, primarily through relationships with elected officials and candidates.”

Gab founder and CEO Andrew Torba has promoted the white genocide or “Great Replacement” conspiracy theory and has been called an advisor to Republican state senator Doug Mastriano, a far-right 2020 election-denying Christian nationalist running for governor of Pennsylvania, where Gab is based. (While never condemning Torba, Mastriano denies the relationship, but there are receipts of Gab doing “consulting” work for Mastriano, who has also told Torba, “Thank God for what you have done.”)

Tuesday morning Tapper took to Twitter to share that Torba attacked him after his Monday report aired on CNN.

Tapper shared the video of the posts he saw on Gab, which includes the antisemitic one he quoted on-air that had the photo of Adolf Hitler.

“Gab’s antisemitic founder is attacking me with the accusation he makes about folks who report factually about his site, that I’m the son of the devil. Totally normal stuff,” Tapper tweeted.

He also posted screenshots of Torba’s posts on Gab.

“Jake Tapper reported on CNN tonight that Gab’s Explore page was filled with Hitler memes and n word posts,” Torba wrote on Gab.

“Reality,” he claimed, “pro-life content, Christian content, content from multiple members of Congress, wholesome animal videos, etc.”

But he didn’t stop there.

“Jake Tapper = John 8:44,” Torba added.

For those unfamiliar with every Bible verse, one version of John 8:44 reads: “You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.”

CNN's Jake Tapper on Monday expressed astonishment at a new survey from the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) that found most Republican voters believe the 2020 election was stolen from former President Donald Trump.

While discussing the report, Tapper brought on PRRI CEO Robert P. Jones and asked him to comment on why white evangelical Christians are the only major religious group in the country that believes Trump actually won the election.

"They're all in for Trump," he said. "They believe this... this is a religion that not that long ago talked about itself as the moral values of the country, that kind of, 'turn the other cheek,' and all that stuff. And yet here we are, a major mainstream religion that's been all in for Trump, and we have among those whobelieve the election was stolen, which is most of them, nearly 4 in 10 saying they can imagine it being justified to resort to violence."

Tapper then turned to some of the even wilder conspiracy theories that a significant minority of Americans believe.

"One in six believe that the U.S. government is controlled by a group of Satan-worshipping pedophiles running a global child sex-trafficking operation," Tapper said. "I mean, what?"

"I know," Jones replied. "Let me tell you, as a social scientist, I never thought I'd be in a position of actually writing that question."

https://www.alternet.org/2020/08/mark-meadows-claims-lack-of-evidence-of-widespread-voter-fraud-is-somehow-the-definition-of-fraud/

on CNN’s State of the Union, host Jake Tapper talked to White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows about the Trump administration’s latest favorite talking point: voter fraud. Specifically, voter fraud via voting by mail. In this case, Meadows came out swinging against the notion that states should send ballots to all registered voters. In perhaps the most mind-blowing exchange, Tapper (accurately) pointed out that there is no proof of “widespread voter fraud,” and Meadows said, “there’s no evidence that there’s not, either.” Then, Meadows added: “That’s the definition of fraud, Jake.”

How did we get there? Let’s check out the now-viral clip below.

While already talking about voter fraud, Tapper asked Meadows to get specific, using voting by mail in Florida versus Pennsylvania as examples, as Trump, as well as First Lady Melania Trump, requested their absentee ballots to vote in Florida just last week. In fact, Trump even voted absentee for Florida’s March primary.

“Can you tell me the difference between voting by mail in Florida and, say, voting by mail in Pennsylvania?” The CNN host asked Meadows on Sunday morning. “What’s the difference?"

meadows sidestepped the question, saying he wasn’t familiar with Pennsylvania’s system, but claimed he and Trump don’t have problems with what he described as “no-excuse absentee” voting. He went on to say that he does have a problem with “sending millions of ballots across the country to sometimes empty mailboxes,” noting that he doesn’t want his vote to be “disenfranchised.” Obviously, the word “disenfranchised” coming from the mouth of any Republican is a bold move given the systemic disenfranchisement of Black and brown voters across the nation, but the back and forth didn’t jump on that particular word choice.

Meadows further suggested the “problem” is that people are “looking at just sending out ballots,” using California as an example. Tapper cut in there and argued that California has already done that for the majority of its population, at about 75%, as well as Oregon, Utah, and Washington state, without problems.

“Now there are four states that are adding to the sending out ballots to every registered voter. I understand that that’s a concern that you’re claiming,” Tapper stated.

Meadows countered this by asking Tapper, “Isn’t it a concern to you?” He continued by claiming that voter rolls are “inaccurate” with “people just moving around” and, in his words, “the people that die off.”

Tapper again cut off this argument, this time simply saying: “But there’s no evidence of widespread voter fraud.”

To which Meadows offered up the response that has now gone viral for its absolutely head-scratching, empty wordplay: “There’s no evidence that there’s not either. That’s the definition of fraud, Jake.”

Here is that clip....[trump nevada rant]

GOP tries to turn impeachment against as a way to justify their shameless Trump cover-up

Written by Sophia Tesfaye / Salon February 3, 2020

There’s a decent chance that former Vice President Joe Biden will win the Iowa caucuses on Monday night, cementing his status as Democratic frontrunner. The Republican-controlled Senate will then vote to acquit Donald Trump, probably two days later, after blocking witnesses and direct evidence at his impeachment trial. Instead of paying attention to the case outlining Trump’s public corruption, however, several Republican senators have spent the last two weeks slagging Biden in an effort to tarnish the potential Democratic nominee — using almost exactly the same playbook used to defeat Hillary Clinton in 2016.

Demonstrating exactly why it’s bad to have foreign governments smear a political opponent on your behalf,Sen. Joni Ernst, an Iowa Republican who faces a tough re-election battle this fall, appeared before reporters after a day of impeachment hearings last week and casually suggested that the airing of Trump’s misdeeds might actually result in Biden’s defeat.

“Iowa caucuses are this next Monday evening. And I’m really interested to see how this discussion today informs and influences the Iowa caucus voters, those Democratic caucus goers. Will they be supporting VP Biden at this point?” the first-term Republican asked.

The question came just before the GOP Senate voted to cover up Trump’s crimes by refusing to hear witnesses. For months, Republicans argued that Trump withheld military aid to Ukraine and pressured President Volodymyr Zelensky to look into the activities of Joe and Hunter Biden because he was earnestly trying to root out corruption. In a classic case of projection, Republicans still vaguely deny that Trump’s actions were politically motivated but now insist that Biden, not Trump, is the one who deserves impeachment.

“I think this door of impeachable whatever has been opened,” said Ernst, whose approval rating is underwater with Iowa voters, in an interview with Bloomberg News on Sunday. “Joe Biden should be very careful what he’s asking for because, you know, we can have a situation where if it should ever be President Biden, that immediately people, the day after he would be elected, would be saying, ‘Well, we’re going to impeach him.'”

On CNN that same day, Ernst argued that not just Biden but even Barack Obama is more deserving of impeachment than Trump, who has already sought foreign interference in the 2020 election after welcoming it four years ago.

“Whether you like what the president has done or not — we can argue this up one side and down the other all day — does it come to the point of removing a president from office?” Ernst asked rhetorically. “I don’t believe this does. I’ll tie it back to Obama and his hot-mic moment with the former president of Russia, where he literally said, ‘Give me some space in my election.’ Oops, OK, talking about elections.”

Host Jake Tapper reminded Ernst of the context for the former president’s 2012 remarks: “He was talking about a missile defense.”

“Yes, but a missile defense that the Congress wanted him to build up, make much more robust [to] protect American citizens,” Ernst responded, “and President Obama choose not to do that as long as the Russians gave him space in the elections. That nobody brought up for impeachment. So the very fact that because aid was held for about two months because there was not an official White House meeting, people are wanting to impeach this president. What President Trump did, it didn’t rise to the level of what President Obama did.”

This nonsensical comparison only makes sense as an attempt to justify the vote to acquit Trump by treating impeachment as an ordinary partisan tactic.

“There is a mountain of evidence to suggest the Bidens’ behavior was harmful to the United States,” Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., tweeted last Wednesday, coming close to threatening a Biden impeachment if he becomes president next year.

Such presumptive threats were doled out by Republican senators prior to the 2016 election as well, which makes their “let the voters decide” rhetoric in defense of Trump so much more dishonest. Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, now a staunch Trump defender, declared that Clinton could be impeached before a single general election vote was cast in 2016.

This certainly looks like the GOP’s 2016 playbook all over again. Trump’s campaign has sent and more than 80 surrogates to Iowa ahead of Monday’s caucuses, including Vice President Pence. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas has claimed “there was more than enough information [and] allegations about corruption” surrounding the Bidens to make Trump “entirely justified in asking for an investigation, and that resolves the matter.” Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., a multimillionaire, has taken out his own TV ads in Iowa to claim that “The real story here is the corruption Joe Biden got away with.”

Trump, Rudy Giuliani and all their goons have been searching for dirt on Biden for well over a year and so far have produced zero material evidence. Senate Republicans, for their part, displayed little interest in Biden’s supposed impropriety back when they controlled both chambers of Congress. They could still launch a Senate investigation into the Bidens, since they currently hold a majority in the upper chamber. But that’s not the point, and they’re well aware that even if they found dirt on either Biden, it would change nothing about Trump’s impeachable actions.

Republicans view the law as a weapon to be wielded against their opponents, so it should come as little surprise if Attorney General Bill Barr announces an official investigation into Bide before the general election, should he be the Democratic nominee.Perhaps only Joe Biden himself, who has repeatedly touted his ability to work effectively with the very Republicans out to destroy his family, would be surprised by such indecency.

How CNN’s Jake Tapper is failing to tell the truth about Republican disinformation campaigns

Written by Nancy LeTourneau / Washington Monthly January 14, 2020

Jake Tapper has shown himself to be one of the more responsible journalists when it comes to prioritizing the truth over balance in his reporting. For example, here is his response to Republicans who have suggested that Democrats were mourning the death of Soleimani.

Recently Tapper made an important point about how disinformation campaigns don’t always originate with foreign adversaries.

“While we are all bracing for what the Iranians might to do to us as this conflict escalates, let’s not lose sight of what Americans are already doing to each other,” says @JakeTapper about misleading and false information being spread on social media. #CNNSOTU pic.twitter.com/EwWfEKNLQ0

— State of the Union (@CNNSotu) January 5, 2020

As I have already noted, it wasn’t just Russia that launched a disinformation campaign against Hillary Clinton in order to influence the 2016 election. Peter Schweizer, with an assist from mainstream media, spread a smear against the former secretary of state that was demonstrably false.

But I have to take issue with how Tapper framed his concern. Notice the examples he gave of people who spread knowingly false information. They included:

Bob Salera, Deputy Communications Director for the National Republican Congressional Committee, who tweeted a doctored video of a Biden speech, referring to the former vice president as a “white nationalist.”

Tony Shaffer, a member of Trump’s 2020 advisory board, who tweeted a doctored video that makes Speaker Nancy Pelosi appear to be intoxicated.

Donald Trump, who tweeted a video of Rep. Ilhan Omar dancing, along with the lie that it was filmed on 9/11.

The White House press secretary, who tweeted a doctored video of a Trump press conference, suggesting that a reporter had rough-housed a staff member.

It strikes me that all four of those examples have one important thing in common: they came from Republicans. Yet, during his commentary, Tapper blames this kind of disinformation on “folks in the political world” and ends by cautioning us not to lose sight of “what Americans are doing to each other.” In an apparent nod to balance, he failed to tell the truth, which is that we shouldn’t lose sight of what Republicans are doing to our political discourse.

I believe that this is an example of how ingrained the whole idea of bothsiderism has become for almost everyone in the mainstream media. It runs so deep that even Jake Tapper feels the need to hedge his bets when it comes to naming the source of domestic disinformation campaigns. Republicans will continue to exploit that opening as long as journalists fail to hold them accountable.

...Tapper’s latest anti-Palestinian comments came during a special extended version of CNN‘s Sunday flagship show “State of the Union” to grapple with two mass shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio that came within 24 hours from midday Saturday to early morning Sunday. The El Paso shooter, Patrick Crusius of Dallas, cited anti-immigrant racism and the president’s rhetoric as motivating factors in an alleged 2,300 word rant posted online shortly before the attack.

That racism, Tapper argued in a segment Sunday, was analogous to the rhetoric of Palestinian leaders whose followers occasionally attack Israelis as part of the resistance movement to their oppression by the apartheid state.

“You hear Republicans talk all the time—rightly, in my view—about the tone set by, well, the Arab world,” said Tapper. “The Palestinians and the way they talk about Israelis, justifying—in the same way you’re doing, no direct link between what the leader says and the violence to some poor Israeli girl in a pizzeria—but the idea you’re validating this hatred.”...

GOP Chair Goes Down in Flames After CNN's Jake Tapper Corners Her on Trump’s Racist Video: ‘I Know You Want to Change the Subject’

“Regardless, we don’t want him in the country!” McDaniel shouted.

By David Edwards / Raw Story November 4, 2018, 7:07 AM GMT

Republican National Committee Chair Ronna Romney McDaniel was confronted by CNN host Jake Tapper on Sunday after she falsely insisted that Democrats had not tried to work with the President Donald Trump to pass a comprehensive immigration bill.

“[T]he president’s closing argument in the midterms is focused on fears of undocumented immigrants,” Tapper told McDaniel, noting that Trump had promoted a racist advertisement that is “factually, it’s not true.”

“Do you have any concerns at all about this web video?” Tapper asked.

“We don’t want people being deported and being criminals and then coming back into this country,” the GOP chair replied. “We know good people are trying to get into this country too. They see the prosperity, they see the economic growth.”

“We need to find a way to fix our immigration system” she continued. “Democrats won’t work with us.”

“You don’t have any issues at all [about the video]?” Tapper tried to say — but McDaniel spoke over him.

“To say [the president] is only focusing on one thing is false,” McDaniel opined.

“It’s factually inaccurate and it’s racially incendiary,” Tapper said of the video. “You don’t have any issue with that?”

“I have an issue with our immigration system that’s not being fixed,” McDaniel shot back. “And the Democrats won’t work with the president and we have caravans coming. In eight years, asylum claims are up 700 percent. By the way, what about the 12,000 kids that have come here unaccompanied?”

“You know what?” Tapper interrupted. “I completely agree with you that there needs to be a big immigration reform bill and Democrats and Republicans need to come together. President Trump is inaccurately blaming [Democrats] for putting a cop killer, for letting him into the country — for letting him into the country! The last time he came into the country was under George W. Bush!”

“Regardless, we don’t want him in the country!” McDaniel shouted. “This is exactly why our immigration system is failing.”

“Is it the Democrats fault?” Tapper queried.

“It’s a systemic failure,” McDaniel admitted.

“Yes!” Tapper exclaimed. “That’s true! It’s a systemic failure! That’s my point! It’s a systemic failure. Democrats and Republicans. That’s the failure but [Trump] blamed it all on Democrats.”

“But who is the party saying, let’s fix it, Jake?” McDaniel said. “Who’s the party solving every problem right now?”

The GOP chair then attempted to deflect attention to the economy.

“I know you want to change the subject,” Tapper smiled. “Republicans control the House, the Senate and the White House.”

“They should be fixing the immigration problem,” McDaniel ranted.

“Democrats — the minority party — should be fixing the immigration problem?” Tapper asked.

“We only have 51 senators,” McDaniel complained.

“It’s not the Senate,” Tapper observed. “You couldn’t get legislation through the House.”

“I do not see a single Democrat saying let’s bring this country together,” McDaniel griped, ignoring Tapper’s point. “They can’t even tout how good our country is doing right now.”

CNN host Jake Tapper on Sunday called out newly-appointed White House Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci for continuing to deny Russia’s interference in the U.S. election.

On Sunday’s State of the Union program, Tapper asked Scaramucci if President Donald Trump was prepared to sign a sanctions bill against Russia.

“There’s a lot of misinformation,” Scaramucci said, dismissing the conclusion of U.S. intelligence agencies. “Somebody said to me the other day — I don’t want to say who — if the Russian actually hacked the this situation and spilled out those emails, you would have never seen it. You would have never had any evidence of them. Meaning that they’re super confident in their deception skills and hacking.”

“Wait, wait, wait,” Tapper interrupted. “I don’t know who this anonymous person is.”

“How about it’s the president, Jake,” Scaramucci revealed. “He called me from Air Force One and basically said to me, ‘This is — maybe they did it, maybe they didn’t do it.'”

“This is exactly the issue!” Tapper noted. “We have experts, the U.S. intelligence agencies [are] unanimous, both Obama appointees and Trump appointees — the director of national intelligence, the head of the National Security Agency, the head of the FBI. I mean, all of these intelligence experts, saying, Russia hacked the election, they tried to interfere in the election.”

“President Trump is contradicting it and you’re siding with President Trump!” the CNN host exclaimed.

“I didn’t say I was siding with President Trump,” Scaramucci insisted. “I’m his communications director and I’m his advocate on a show like this.”

Tapper once again pointed out that Republicans in the Senate and Trump’s own intelligence experts agreed that Russia had meddled in the election.

“You’re saying, you’re going to side with the president,” Tapper continued. “Don’t you owe a duty to the truth?”

“What about this conversation are you missing, Jake?” Scaramucci quipped. “There are checks and balances in the system for a reason. The president will make that decisions [on the sanction bill] when he makes that decision. You’re telling me something is true that could, in fact, be true. I don’t have the information in front of me.”

JAKE TAPPER (HOST): Now, the White House might say this is just a display of focus, and loyalty, and positivity, but critics suggested that the fealty display today was sycophantic and not-a-little disturbing. Either way, the backdrop of the Russia investigation made the scene all the more stark and surreal while other supporters of the president in the world of conservative punditry were busy out there trying to undercut a man today with an impeccable reputation for integrity, Robert Mueller -- a decorated Marine who served in Vietnam, former U.S. attourney, longserving FBI director, currently the special council heading up the Russia investigation -- with former House Speaker Newt Gingrich tweeting, quote, "Republicans are delusional if they think the special counsel is going to be fair. Look who he's hiring. Check FEC reports. Time to rethink."

What a difference a month makes. Back then, Gingrich said, quote, "Robert Mueller is superb choice to be special counsel. His reputation is impeccable for honesty and integrity. Media should now calm down." Fellow conservatives Ann Coulter, Laura Ingraham, and others also beginning to question Mueller and his investigation and his integrity for any number of reasons, perhaps belying the positive vibes that we saw in the cabinet room earlier today.

http://mediamatters.org/video/2016/11/17/cnn-s-jake-tapper-exposes-trump-adviser-myron-ebell-industry-funded-climate-change-denier/214515

JAKE TAPPER (HOST): As the world tries to figure out just what comes next, one of the clearest policy differences between the current president and his successor, President-elect Trump, has to do with combating climate change. President-elect Trump has made no bones about his belief, contrary to the vast majority of scientists, that man-made climate change is not a legitimate phenomenon. And now he is tapping one of the nation’s leading climate change deniers to head the transition for the Environmental Protection Agency, someone who may not want the agency to exist at all.

[...]

TAPPER: Suffice it to say, Donald Trump is not a big believer in man-made climate change, contrary to the views and data of the vast majority of scientists.

[BEGIN VIDEO CLIP]

DONALD TRUMP: Our plan will end the EPA, which is a -- hey, look, it's all wonderful, but it's a disaster.

[END VIDEO CLIP]

TAPPER: That's why the former EPA administrators under Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush hammered Trump during the election for pledging to yank the U.S. from the Paris accords, an international agreement to fight climate change, a move they said, quote, would set the world back decades. Leading the Trump transition team on environmental matters is an avid climate change denier. A man who was once funded by the tobacco industry to fight those seeking to further regulate cigarettes. Myron Ebell is the director of the Center For Energy And Environment, part of a libertarian think tank that, quote, questions global warming alarmism, partly funded by some of the same industries such as coal that are being hurt by the regulations of the fossil fuel industry. Ebell has long fought against environmental regulations, arguing they're an extension of government power. As he told PBS in 2012, he rejects the reams of data and evidence suggesting that man-made climate change is real.

[BEGIN VIDEO CLIP]

MYRON EBELL:  We believed that the so-called global warming consensus was not based on science but was a political consensus.

[END VIDEO CLIP]

TAPPER: That's rejecting evidence accepted by most scientists, as well as a growing number of Republicans, including former South Carolina Congressman Bob Inglis.

[BEGIN VIDEO CLIP]

BOB INGLIS: It's really quite comical, really, to have one of the Merchants of Doubt as the head of EPA. That really would be a continuing joke on America.

[END VIDEO CLIP]

TAPPER: As founder of environmental group republicEn, Inglis says there must be a way everyone can move forward together. A balanced way.

[BEGIN VIDEO CLIP]

INGLIS: This is for real. And it’s happening to us now. We want to take care of the problem. It may be, just maybe, that somebody like Donald Trump could show that there is a free enterprise answer to climate change. But he won't show it if he's got Myron Ebell as the director -- as the administrator of EPA, however.

[END VIDEO CLIP]

TAPPER: Trump's appointee will also have the power to affect how we work with the international community to combat a changing environment that has proven deadly time and again. Ebell tops Trump's list less than a year after protesters publicly named him a climate criminal during an annual U.N. conference in Paris.
