Another anti-Muslim figurehead involved with CNP is <a href="https://www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/extremist-files/individual/frank-gaffney-jr"> Frank Gaffney</a>.

A former Ronald Reagan administration staffer, Gaffney has since become

one of the most prolific anti-Muslim propagandists in the country. He

is gripped by paranoid fantasies of foreign entities such as the Muslim

Brotherhood infiltrating and supplanting the U.S. from within. Gaffney

founded the anti-Muslim hate group <a href="https://www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/extremist-files/group/center-security-policy"> Center for Security Policy</a> and now serves in an executive chairmanship role at the group.

Hatewatch first reported on Gaffney’s CNP membership in the

publication of the group’s 2014 roster. He is listed as a “Gold Circle

Member” in CNP’s September 2020 membership roster. Gold Circle Members

pay a yearly fee of $10,000, as shown by nomination documents. Like

Gabriel, Gaffney’s listed interests at CNP include “Radical Islam.”

Gaffney and the Center for Security Policy did not respond to a request for comment.

In 2016, candidate Trump <a href="https://www.npr.org/2015/12/07/458836388/trump-calls-for-total-and-complete-shutdown-of-muslims-entering-u-s" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"> used data</a>

from a shoddy survey commissioned by the Center for Security Policy to

justify his call for a “total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering

the United States.” The survey was done by The Polling Company,

Kellyanne Conway’s company. Conway served as Trump’s senior counselor

and was a member of CNP’s executive committee from 2014 to 2015, tax

records show.

Like other anti-Muslim and far-right <a href="https://www.splcenter.org/hatewatch/2020/03/24/hate-group-leaders-antigovernment-extremists-push-anti-china-coronavirus-rhetoric"> actors</a>,

CNP has begun to frame China as a new Cold War-style adversary. Gaffney

and his group are active in stoking alarmism about the supposed threat

from China. At a CNP conference in August 2020 in Arlington, Virginia,

the coalition’s sister lobbying arm CNP Action, Inc., hosted a panel

titled “Reckoning with China: Action Steps,” according to a <a href="https://www.exposedbycmd.org/2020/10/27/secretive-council-for-national-policy-closely-tied-to-trump/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"> leaked copy</a> of the agenda obtained by the watchdog group Center for Media and Democracy. The panel featured Gaffney as a participant.

Virginia “Ginni” Thomas, a right-wing activist who is married to U.S.

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, is also a CNP member and counts

“Radical Islam” among her interests. Everyone from the president himself down to Mike Pence, Bill Barr, Mike Pompeo, Kellyanne Conway, Mark Meadows, Ivanka Trump, Jared Kushner and the entire regime of post-apocalyptic ghouls who participated in or were aware of malfeasance and unconstitutional conduct inside the White House must be compelled, at the very least, to testify about what happened, when it happened and who was involved. The commission can work backward from the administration’s  criminal response to the pandemic to the president’s repeated attempts to cheat in the 2016 and 2020 elections, including with Ukraine, Russia and the Postal Service, and then to the theft of taxpayer funds, the myriad myriad cases of obstruction of justice and so onward.Beyond the crimes commission, the Justice Department under a new attorney general needs to resuscitate all the probes Barr has obstructed or canceled in aid of his puppeteer in the Oval Office.Get ready, though. Not only will the Red Hats scream bloody murder — and they’ll scream loudly — there will also be a movement among Democrats to simply move on. To cut bait. The Van Joneses of the cable news landscape — those who’ve attempted to misuse the coveted label “presidential” to describe the exact opposite — will exploit their platforms to promote letting the nation “heal” by leaving the past in the past.We can’t allow those voices to prevail, or we risk the rise of the next Trump, sashaying through the gigantic Trump-sized hole in our institutions and political discourse. Already, Donald Trump Jr. is on the shortlist to run in 2024 — unless, that is, Trump decides to declare himself president for life. Without adequate recompense, it’d be remarkably easy for either Trump himself or a successor to repeat this entire shitshow. If there’s one thing we’ve painfully learned over the last several years, it’s that there’s little we can do to stop the criminals once they’re in office and hold power.We have to make it politically suicidal for new and existing Republican leaders to follow Trump through that hole in the wall. Trumpism must be put down. For that to happen, patriotic Americans have to maintain a fierce resolve to end it through the election and then through popular support for accountability, ideally through some mechanism like Kirschner’s crimes commission.It won’t be easy. The Trumpers will be clever with their mea culpas. Conway and others will exploit social media, reality television or cable news to humanize themselves. They’ll try to pretend they had nothing to do with anything, or they’ll flip the script to frame themselves as victims. Don’t let them. There are victims in all this, for sure, but it ain’t them. The real victims are the children who’ve been ripped from their parents for the sin of escaping death, only to be incarcerated and terrorized in “the land of the free.” The real victims are the peaceful protesters who were gassed and fired upon by Trump’s stormtroopers, all for a botched photo-op. The real victims are the 177,000 Americans and counting, none of whom have received a moment of silence from their president, along with millions of others who were infected by a deadly virus thanks to Trump’s lack of responsibility, ethics, morality and personal restraint. Heather Heyer, <a href="https://www.heatherheyerfoundation.com/" target="blank" style="box-sizing: border-box; outline: none; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; transition: color 0.3s ease 0s; cursor: pointer;">murdered</a> by one of Trump’s “very fine people,” is a victim. American voters are victims. Americans who get their medications, their paychecks or their ballots by mail are victims. American taxpayers of all parties and all ideologies are victims. We could do this all day.Kellyanne Conway, on the other hand, is a culprit. She freely chose to take a gig in which she erased all those victims from the minds of anyone paying attention to her. She was in the room where major decisions were handed down and rather than blowing the whistle on the worst of the worst, which is what a decent and patriotic American would have done, she hastily ran outside to explain to the world why the atrocity of the hour was actually great news — our lying eyes be damned.Letitia James has the right idea. Glenn Kirschner has the right idea. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsP9YLL1NeQ" target="blank" style="box-sizing: border-box; outline: none; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; transition: color 0.3s ease 0s; cursor: pointer;">Rep. Eric Swalwell</a>, D-Calif., who has also called for a crimes commission has the right idea. But in order for post-Trump reforms and accountability to occur, the rest of us are bound by our citizenship to fearlessly and steadfastly support the women and men who will spearhead the effort. We have no choice. There are too many wrongs that need to be made right, too many lives disrupted by Conway and her co-conspirators. And remember to tell the people who would rather we ignore it all and move on, that, yes, we will move on — after we deliver satisfactory closure to one of the most terrible chapters in our national history.

That was then converted to becoming a super PAC for Donald Trump. They tried to register with the Federal Election Commission the name, Defeat Crooked Hillary, and the FEC, luckily, did not allow them to do that. So it was called Make America Number 1.</div><div style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">
</div><div style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">This super PAC was headed by David Bossie, someone that you might remember from Citizens United, who basically brought dark money into our politics and allowed endless amounts of money to be funneled into these types of vehicles so that we don’t know where all of the money is coming from for these types of manipulative communications. And he was in charge of this campaign.</div><div style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">

And it was so successful in their first experiments that they spent the rest of the money from the super PAC over the rest of the campaign only on negative messaging and fearmongering.</div><div style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">

What Brittany is describing is a debrief meeting where Cambridge, as a company, is saying, “This is what we learned from our political experience. This is what actually worked.” OK? And they’re sharing it because they’re saying, “Now this is how we want to codify this and commoditize this to go into commercial business.” Right?</div><div style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">

This is not them advertising it to the world. This is them saying, “This is what we’ve learned. Based off that, this is how we’re going to run our business. This is how we’re going to invest in the expansion of this to sell this outside of politics.” The game was, take the political experience, parlay it into the commercial sector. That was the strategy. So, there is no debate whether it worked or not. It was highly effective.</div><div style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">
</div><div style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">And the thing that’s terrifying is that while Cambridge has been disbanded, the same actors are out there. And there’s nothing has been — nothing has changed to allow us to start putting in place legislation to say there is something called information crimes. In this era of information warfare, in this era of information economies, what is an information crime? What does it look like? Who determines it? And yet, without that, we are still living in this unfiltered, unregulated space, where places like Facebook are continuing to choose profit over the protection of the republic. And I think that’s what’s so outrageous.</div><div>

Defending the proposed impeachment, she described Trump as, “A president who has doubled down on violating his oath to faithfully execute the laws, and to protect and defend the constitution. The evidence reveals a president who used the powers of his office to demand that a foreign government participate in undermining a competing candidate for the presidency.”</div><div style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">
</div><div style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">“What happened in 2016 was bad enough. There is widespread agreement that Russian operatives intervened to manipulate our political process. But that distortion is magnified if a sitting president abuses the powers of his office actually to invite foreign intervention.”</div><div style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">
</div><div style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">The right immediately zeroed in on Karlan, largely ignoring the two male professors who also spoke out in favor of impeachment at the hearing. They described her as a “babe who is making up stories” (Rush Limbaugh), a “psychotic individual” (Sean Hannity) and “a moron” (Tucker Carlson). Thus enraging the Three Stooges of Fox News Misogyny was proof positive that Karlan had hit the mark.</div><div style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">
</div><div style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">But what far too many obsessed on was a small joke she made to prove a point: “I’ll just give you one example that shows you the difference between [Trump] and a king, which is the constitution says there can be no titles of nobility. So while the president can name his son Barron, he can’t make him a baron.”</div><div style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">
</div><div style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">There was a collective gasp of feigned outrage. How dare she? First Lady Melania Trump tweeted, “Pamela Karlan, you should be ashamed of your very angry and obviously biased public pandering, and using a child to do it.” Kellyanne Conway went on Fox and Friends: “If you went to work today to manicure nails, to manicure lawn, if you went to work with a jackhammer or a welding machine… that woman yesterday looks her nose down on you… who the hell are you, lady?”</div><div style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">
</div><div style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">To which Columbia Law professor Kamal Greene aptly replied, “Pam Karlan hates working people so much that she parlayed her Supreme Court clerkship into a huge $0 bonus and tony middle class salary litigating civil rights cases at the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.”</div><div style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">
</div><div style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">You can argue that it may not have been the most elegant comparison Karlan could have made and she did apologize (unnecessarily in my opinion). But come on, she was not making fun of the president’s son. She was making a point about Trump’s assuming the faux-ermine cloak of royalty, pretending to be what he must never be – a monarch who can do no wrong because his tenure is a divine right, not the result of a few twists in the Electoral College that ran counter to the popular vote.</div><div style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">
</div><div style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">There was disingenuous sanctimony from far too much of the mainstream media and from the right, especially from Republicans whose president has bragged about grabbing women by their genitals, claimed if Ivanka Trump was not his own daughter he would date her and used to call himself John Barron, a “go-to alias,” The Washington Post reported, when Trump “was under scrutiny, in need of a tough front man or otherwise wanting to convey a message without attaching his own name to it.”</div><div style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">
</div><div style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">What’s more, when it comes to abuse of children, infinitely worse is this administration’s gross maltreatment of immigrant young people – including that newly reported 16-year-old Guatemalan who died from flu last spring in a Texas holding cell – and poor American youth who can’t get enough to eat.</div><div style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">

Indeed, Cuomo himself ended up getting so frustrated at Conway that he instructed her to "stop lying!" Conway proclaimed that it was a "<a href="https://www.thedailybeast.com/kellyanne-conway-tells-chris-cuomo-its-a-slur-to-call-trump-a-liar" style="text-decoration-line: none;">slur</a>" to call Trump a liar, and attacked Cuomo personally, at one point even <a href="https://www.cnn.com/videos/politics/2018/12/14/kellyanne-conway-liar-hush-money-trump-cuomo-sot-cpt-vpx.cnn" style="text-decoration-line: none;">holding up a printed picture</a> of Cuomo looking at an electoral map on election night to tried to insinuate he had pro-Hillary Clinton bias."No, it’s not a slur to state the facts," admonishes Sullivan. "But it is a shame to give liars a megaphone."To Sullivan, deplatforming Conway is only a small part of the fix."When major news organizations publish tweets and news alerts that repeat falsehoods merely because the president uttered them, it's the same kind of journalistic malpractice as offering a prime interview spot to Kellyanne Conway," writes Sullivan. "This is how NBC News spread the news of Trump’s reaction to recent legal developments that were extraordinarily negative — maybe devastating — to him: 'NEW: "Totally clears the President. Speakers included House Speaker Paul Ryan and Trump advisor Kellyanne Conway, who won the IWF Valor Award for being a "passionate advocate for limited government" who does not embrace "the idea that being a woman is a handicap." Conway is also an IWF board member.
So what is the Independent Women's Forum?
IWF got its start 25 years ago as an effort to defend now-Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas as he faced sexual harassment charges. The group has since raised millions from the secretive foundations of the Koch brothers and other right-wing billionaires to carry out its mission of "increasing the number of women who value free markets and personal liberty."
In the world of the IWF - a group Joan Walsh described in The Nation as "the 'feminists' doing the Koch's dirty work" - that means defending the freedom of corporations to sell toxic products and pollute the environment, while trying to frame that agenda as good for women and children.
E-cigarettes should be approved because of the unique biological needs of women, for example, and climate science education is too scary for students. (The e-cig letter is "standard Phillip Morris PR," says tobacco industry expert Stan Glanz; and Greenpeace classifies IWF as a "Koch Industries climate denial front group.")
Women can also benefit by ignoring "alarmist" concerns about toxic chemicals, according to an IWF lecture series sponsored by Monsanto.
To give you a sense of the messaging on chemicals: Moms who insist on organic food are arrogant, snobby "helicopter parents" who "need to be in control of everything when it comes to their kids, even the way food is grown and treated," according to Julie Gunlock, director of IWF's "Culture of Alarmism" project, as quoted in an article titled "The tyranny of the organic mommy mafia" that was written by an IWF fellow.
At the IWF gala, Gunlock posed for a photo op with Monsanto staffer Aimee Hood and Julie Kelly, who writes articles casting doubt on climate science and pesticide risk, and once even called climate hero Bill McKibben "a piece of shit."
Gunlock and Kelly are "rock stars," Hood tweeted.
"I'm framing this," Monsanto employee Cami Ryan tweeted in return.
Put a frame around the whole shindig and behold the absurdity of corporate-captured politics in America, where the nation's leaders openly embrace an anti-women "women's group" that equates "freedom" with eating toxic pesticides, at an event sponsored by the chemical industry, a tobacco company, the world's most influential news source and an extremist group that wants to do away with a voter-elected Senate.
Meanwhile in the rational world
Recent science suggests that if you want to get pregnant and raise healthy children, you should reject the propaganda that groups like the Independent Women's Forum are trying to sell.In just the past few weeks, the Journals of the American Medical Association published a Harvard study implicating pesticide-treated foods in fertility problems, a UC San Diego study documenting huge increases in human exposure to a common pesticide, and a physician's commentary urging people to eat organic food.I wrote about those studies in more detail here, "Trying to get pregnant? Science suggests: eat organic and regulate the pesticide industry".Mainstream groups have been giving similar advice for years.In 2012, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommended reducing children's exposure to pesticides due to a growing body of literature that links pesticides to chronic health problems in children, including behavioral problems, birth defects, asthma and cancer.In 2009, the bipartisan President's Cancer Panel reported: "the true burden of environmentally induced cancer has been grossly underestimated."The panel urged then-President George W. Bush "most strongly to use the power of your office to remove the carcinogens and other toxins from our food, water, and air that needlessly increase health care costs, cripple our Nation's productivity, and devastate American lives."
Unfortunately for our nation, acting on that advice has not been possible in a political system indentured to corporate interests.

Corporate capture of health and science
For decades, pesticide corporations have manipulated science and U.S. regulatory agencies to keep the truth hidden about the health dangers of their chemicals.The details are being revealed by hundreds of thousands of pages of industry documents turned loose from legal discovery, whistleblowers and FOIA requests that have been examined in government hearings and by many media outlets.For a synopsis of Monsanto's "long-running secretive campaign to manipulate the scientific record, to sway public opinion, and to influence regulatory assessments" on its herbicide glyphosate, see this essay by my colleague Carey Gillam in Undark Magazine.As one example of government/corporate collusion: in 2015, on the Obama administration's watch, the EPA official in charge of evaluating the cancer risk of glyphosate allegedly bragged to a Monsanto executive about helping to "kill" another agency's cancer study, as Bloomberg reported.Suppressing science has been a bipartisan, decades-long project. Since 1973, Monsanto has presented dubious science to claim the safety of glyphosate while EPA largely looked the other way, as Valerie Brown and Elizabeth Grossman documented for In These Times.Brown and Grossman spent two years examining the publicly available archive of EPA documents on glyphosate, and reported:"Glyphosate is a clear case of 'regulatory capture' by a corporation acting in its own financial interest while serious questions about public health remain in limbo. The record suggests that in 44 years-through eight presidential administrations-EPA management has never attempted to correct the problem. Indeed, the pesticide industry touts its forward-looking, modern technologies as it strives to keep its own research in the closet, and relies on questionable assumptions and outdated methods in regulatory toxicology."The only way to establish a scientific basis for evaluating glyphosate's safety, they wrote, would be to "force some daylight between regulators and the regulated."
Limited government means freedom to harm
In Trump's Washington, there is no daylight at all between the corporations selling harmful products and the agencies that are supposed to regulate them.
EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt is pushing scientists off advisory boards and stacking the EPA with political appointees connected to the oil, coal and chemical industries, many of whom are connected to climate science deniers.
As one of his first official actions, Pruitt tossed aside the recommendation of EPA's scientists and allowed Dow Chemical to keep selling a pesticide developed as a nerve gas that is linked to brain damage in children.
"Kids are told to eat fruits and vegetables, but EPA scientists found levels of this pesticide on such foods at up to 140 times the limits deemed safe," Nicholas Kristof wrote in a scathing NYT op-ed. "Trump's most enduring legacy may be cancer, infertility and diminished I.Q.s for decades to come."
Pruitt has gone so far as to put a chemical industry lobbyist in charge of a sweeping new toxics law that was supposed to regulate the chemical industry.
It's all so outrageous - but then, it has been for a very long time.
That sweeping new toxics law, which passed last year in a hailstorm of bipartisan glory, was opposed by many environmental groups but lauded by - and reportedly written by - the American Chemistry Council.
"The $800 billion chemical industry lavishes money on politicians and lobbies its way out of effective regulation. This has always been a problem, but now the Trump administration has gone so far as to choose chemical industry lobbyists to oversee environmental protections," as Kristof described it.
"The American Academy of Pediatrics protested the administration's decision on the nerve gas pesticide, but officials sided with industry over doctors. The swamp won. The chemical industry lobby, the American Chemistry Council, is today's version of Big Tobacco…"
"Some day we will look back and wonder: What were we thinking?!"
The Character of our Country
A decade ago, the Independent Women's Forum presented its Valor Award to Nancy Brinker, founder of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the nation's largest breast cancer organization - a group that has also drawn criticism for taking money from polluting corporations and promoting unhealthy food and toxic products.
At the 2007 IWF gala, in an acceptance speech she called "The Character of our Country," Brinker warned that millions of lives will be lost unless America acts to avert the coming "cancer tsunami."
But then, she said: "My friends, this is not a problem of politics. When it comes to cancer, there are no Republicans or Democrats, no liberals or conservatives."
Rather, she said, invoking vagueness as she stood before a group that tells women not to worry about pesticides, at an event awash in corporate cash, beating cancer is a matter of summoning the will to make cancer a "national and global priority!"
But that is exactly a problem of politics. It's about Republicans and Democrats, both of whom have let Americans down by failing to confront the chemical industry. It's about summoning the political will to get chemicals linked to cancer, infertility and brain damage off the market and out of our food.
