Tammy Bruce - Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tammy_Bruce)
Tammy K. Bruce (born August 20, 1962) is an American conservative (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conservatism)\3] radio host, author, and political commentator. She has served as United States Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ambassadors_of_the_United_States_to_the_United_Nations) since December 2025. She previously served as spokeswoman for the United States Department of State (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spokeswoman_for_the_United_States_Department_of_State) from January to August 2025 in the second Trump administration (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_presidency_of_Donald_Trump). Bruce has been an on-air contributor to Fox News (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fox_News) and has also hosted Get Tammy Bruce on [Fox Nation (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fox_Nation).
Early life and education
Tammy Bruce was born on August 20, 1962, in Northridge, California (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northridge,_California). Her mother was a retail store clerk.[4] Bruce has never met her biological father, saying that he "disappeared a few months before I was born".[5]
Bruce went to Ventura High School (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ventura_High_School), where she lasted only two weeks. She subsequently took the California Proficiency Exam and passed.\5] Bruce returned to school in her late 30s and obtained a bachelor's degree (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bachelor%27s_degree) in political science (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Political_science) from the [University of Southern California (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Southern_California) in 2002.[6][4]
Career
Early work (late 1970s–1980s)
After leaving her formal education at 15, Bruce moved to Illinois and began a series of minor jobs. She moved back to Los Angeles and worked as a personal secretary for Brenda Benet (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brenda_Benet) until 1982.\7] She later worked for Gloria Loring (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gloria_Loring) and her then-husband, [Alan Thicke (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Thicke).[5]
Bruce also worked in electronic publicity, creating video news releases and press kits to distribute to news organizations.[5]
Feminism (1990–2000s)
For seven years, Bruce served as president of the Los Angeles chapter of the National Organization for Women (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Organization_for_Women) (NOW) (1990–1996). She was the youngest woman at the time to lead a major chapter of NOW.[8]
In 1995, responding to the verdict in the O. J. Simpson (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/O.J.Simpson) murder trial, Bruce said "What we need to teach our children is...not about racism, but is about violence against women″ and that her message to Simpson was "You are not welcome here, you are not welcome in this country, you are not welcome on our airwaves, you are not welcome in our culture." She also refused to discuss the issue on a talk show, reportedly saying "I don’t have time to argue with a bunch of black women; we’ve moved beyond that."[9] The NOW Executive Board voted to censure her for what it called "racially insensitive comments".[10]: 5 [9][8][11]
Bruce claimed that the censure was due to her focus on domestic violence (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domestic_violence), as opposed to defense attorney Johnnie Cochran (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnnie_Cochran)'s "racial issues" trial argument.\12] She resigned from NOW five months later, in May 1996.\13] Since then, Bruce has written about what she sees as the failings of NOW and the political left (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Political_left) in general. She has said that the feminist (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feminist) establishment in the U.S. has abandoned authentic feminism.[14] She launched a new organization, the [Women’s Progress Alliance (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Women%E2%80%99s_Progress_Alliance&action=edit&redlink=1) with Denise Brown, the sister of [Nicole Brown Simpson (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicole_Brown_Simpson), saying “We both have been controversial, and we both will remain controversial."[8][15]
In 1997, Bruce hosted an overnight weekend talk show on KFI (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KFI), in Los Angeles.\16] She also hosted a national radio program on [Talk Radio Network (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk_Radio_Network) throughout much of the 2000s.[citation ^needed]
In 2003, Bruce was appointed to serve on California Governor-elect Arnold Schwarzenegger (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arnold_Schwarzenegger)'s transition team following his successful recall election against Governor Gray Davis (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gray_Davis).[17]
Political commentator (2010–2024)
Bruce had been a Democrat and a liberal activist, but later became a conservative.[3][18] In a 2010 op-ed, she wrote the following: "The real story of bigotry and intolerance is the fact that it lives and thrives on the left. As a gay woman who spent most of her adult life pushing the cart for liberal causes with liberal friends in a liberal city, I found that sexism, racism and homophobia are staples in the liberal world. The huge irony is liberals spend every ounce of energy promoting the notion that they are the banner carriers of individualism and personal freedom, yet the hammer comes down on anyone who dares not to conform to, or who dissents even in part from, the liberal agenda".[3]
Bruce returned to Talk Radio Network in November 2012 as a guest host during the move of The Laura Ingraham Show (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Laura_Ingraham_Show) from TRN to Courtside Entertainment Group.\citation ^needed]. In 2014, Bruce created a short video for the conservative YouTube channel [Prager University (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prager_University) in which she summarized her criticisms of the contemporary feminist movement.[19][better ^source ^needed]
Bruce was the subject of controversy in May 2017, when appearing as a guest on Fox News (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fox_News) show Tucker Carlson Tonight (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tucker_Carlson_Tonight). She criticized an autistic child for asking Vice President Mike Pence (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Pence) for an apology when he accidentally brushed the young boy in the face.[20] She later apologized on air.[21]
In December 2018, Bruce appeared on Fox News to criticize the decision of one Scottish coffee shop to call "gingerbread men" "gingerbread people". Bruce said, "obviously, they're men". She characterized the decision by the coffee shop as "the tipping point" in policing free speech.[22][23][24]
Bruce was a Fox News contributor.[25] In 2019, she became the host of Get Tammy Bruce, which airs on the Fox Nation streaming service.[26][27]
Second Trump's administration (2025–present)
In January 2025, Donald Trump (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Trump) announced that Bruce would be named as spokeswoman for the United States Department of State (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spokesperson_for_the_United_States_Department_of_State) in his second administration (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_presidency_of_Donald_Trump).\28] In August 2025, he nominated her to be Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations.\29] She was sworn in on December 29, 2025.\1] During an emergency session of the [UN Security Council (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Nations_Security_Council), called by [Somalia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Somalia), in regard to Israel recognition of [Somaliland (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Somaliland), Bruce was quoted saying "Earlier this year, several countries, including members of this Council, made the unilateral decision to recognize a nonexistent Palestinian state. And yet, no emergency meeting was called to express this Council's outrage,".[30]
Personal life
At the age of 17, Bruce commenced a romantic partnership with 34-year-old actress Brenda Benet (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brenda_Benet). At the time, Bruce was employed as Benet's personal secretary.\31]: 2–5 [7] Later, Bruce and Benet lived together for nearly a year before Bruce moved out of their shared residence. After her son’s death, Benet became severely depressed. On April 7, 1982, Benet [died (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_LGBT-related_suicides) of a self-inflicted gunshot at her home before she was scheduled to have lunch with Bruce.[32][33][34]
In a 2005 interview with C-SPAN (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C-SPAN), Bruce identified herself as a pro-choice (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abortion-rights_movement) lesbian (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lesbian).[35]

MS BRUCE: Hi, everybody. Hello, sir.
QUESTION: Hi.
MS BRUCE: Oh, thank you, ma’am. Welcome aboard, everyone. Thank you for being here. I know a few people are doing some hits so we might have some people coming in. Appreciate, again, you being here.
All right. An announcement – I think a rather important one for certainly all of you here and everyone watching at home, and certainly everyone here at the State Department. Welcome aboard. Today, under President Trump’s leadership and at the direction of Secretary Rubio, we are reversing decades of bloat and bureaucracy at the State Department. The Secretary announced a reorganization plan to build an America First State Department to meet the challenges of a new era.
He has issued the following statement on the plan, which you can get at State Department – D-E-P-T or – how – is it dot gov?
STAFF: State.gov.
MS BRUCE: State.gov is where you can get this statement and links to other information on what we’re about to discuss:
We are facing tremendous challenges across the globe. To deliver on President Trump’s America First foreign policy, we must make the State Department great again.
In its current form, the department is bloated, bureaucratic, and unable to perform its essential diplomatic mission in this new era of great power competition. Over the past 15 years, the department’s footprint has had unprecedented growth and costs have soared. But far from seeing a return to investment, taxpayers have seen less effective and less efficient diplomacy. The sprawling bureaucracy created a system more beholden to radical political ideology than advancing America’s core national interests.
That is why today Secretary Rubio is announcing a comprehensive reorganization plan that will bring the department into the 21st century. This approach will empower the department from the ground up, from the bureaus to the embassies. Region-specific functions will be consolidated to increase functionality, redundant offices will be removed, and non-statutory programs that are misaligned with America’s core national interests will cease to exist.
Under President Trump’s leadership, we have a commander in chief committed to putting America and Americans first. As his Secretary of State, Secretary Rubio announces that he is in fact confident a reformed State Department will meet the moment and help make our country great once again.
So the bottom line here is that these sweeping changes will empower our talented diplomats to put America and Americans first. It is also – I will remind for those of you who are in the bullpen and those watching at home – as I’ve mentioned before, there’s a number of journalists and organizations that are a member of our bullpen. They’re people who cover the State Department and work here in the building. And we had a discussion earlier today with some more background on this that also for State Department personnel – everyone in the building – will be receiving, of course, this statement, and there is an opinion piece that is available from the Secretary at the new State Department Substack link, and that is State – D-E-P-T.Substack.com. Is that it? Go there and it will ask if you want to subscribe. You don’t have to. You can just click on the title and you’ll get additional commentary from the Secretary in this regard.
Also, for everyone in this building, there is additional information. There is a fact sheet. There are frequently asked questions. There’s an additional statement from the Deputy Secretary Landau, so you will be able to see that as well. And as a reminder again, because I know there’s been a lot of fake news out there, this is a reorganization plan. It is not something where people are being fired today. They’re not – you’re not – no one’s going to be walking out of the building. It’s not that kind of a dynamic. It is a roadmap; it’s a plan. It is something that we’ve – there’s been a congressional notice that has been sent. And so the steps and the procedures that happen through the government are also taking place at this point as well.
And at this stage, I will open it up for questions on this issue. Yes. Shaun.
QUESTION: Sure. Thanks. If you don’t mind, just – obviously there’ll be lots of questions on this, but just to make sure we get to it.
MS BRUCE: Of course.
QUESTION: The Russians said that – are saying that Special Envoy Witkoff is coming back.
MS BRUCE: All right. So we’re doing – that’s a different issue.
QUESTION: All right.
MS BRUCE: Let’s stick with this. If we – I – it’s an interesting – if none of you have any questions about this.
QUESTION: No, no, we certainly have questions about it.
MS BRUCE: Yeah, so I mean —
QUESTION: We’ll get to that later.
MS BRUCE: I mean questions about this.
QUESTION: Okay.
MS BRUCE: And then of course I know – Lord knows – there is many other things that are happening as well.
QUESTION: Again, sure.
MS BRUCE: All right. Yes, go ahead.
QUESTION: Hi, just on the hiring freeze and the way that this affects the folding in of USAID to the State Department.
MS BRUCE: Sure.
QUESTION: How – given the fact that these people are not considered State Department employees, what opportunities, if any, are going to be given to them to able to reapply or not for their position?
MS BRUCE: Sure. Sure. First of all, the USAID fold-in that in a way is kind of the genesis of this, right? We knew that was going to happen, USAID was going to become a part of the State Department. And in this framework, what you’ll see – and it makes, I think, perfect sense and people seeing this will see that it makes sense – is that instead of this monolithic entity that was its own object in Washington, D.C., making decisions about aid and where the money would go, the usual experience – and I’ve experienced this with the Secretary’s travels and his conversations with the leaders and also our own embassy and consulate staffs – is that you would have donations or funding for a project that the country itself was not interested in or did not want and had other needs, that the embassy staff or the ambassador was never consulted, that the opinions of the people who are working in the country were not consulted.
So they would see money going into a nation, as an example, put in to fund something that was even, in some cases, detrimental to the nation that we were working with or opposed by an ambassador, and yet there was no input and no action. In this particular kind of re-org, it’s about consolidating things, right, weaving certain offices into other bureaus, making situations smaller, reorganizing it literally. And in that case, you will see the bureaus which used to have a lot of power but had really kind of lost that in a certain way through the giant bureaucracy that became evident through the ‘70s and ‘80s and ‘90s, and that you would have a dynamic now where the intention is – and described in this plan – to have each regional bureau have the element of the USAID that is relevant to that bureau so that they would be working together.
And it would be a coalition, if you will, of ideas and minds and efforts to then also bring in and have the embassies, the ambassadors, and the governments who we’re working with having a say in making sure that the money that’s donated is relevant to that nation, is relevant to the region. And that’s what we’ll be – that’s where USAID essentially is going, is into positions where, as I’ve mentioned to you, don’t – as we were doing our review of USAID – is don’t mistake a change for being something – for indicating something is gone or missing, that it was never about us abandoning our commitment to funding to any kind of life-saving efforts or our work with other nations in assisting them, but it was going to look different, and now it will.
But it will not just look different, but it’s actually going to be within a functional framework to make sure that any aid that goes out is aid that the – that we work with the nation on, that we work with the embassies on, and people on the ground with an interest who are stakeholders, will have a say in that. I think that that’s a – certainly a much more functional way to move foreign aid through.
QUESTION: But on the employees themselves —
MS BRUCE: Oh, sure.
QUESTION: — that are already sort of in limbo in terms of how their jobs are going to change —
MS BRUCE: Sure. Sure.
QUESTION: — when the department was going to be taking over USAID. Are those employees going to have the opportunities to apply for other positions? How many people —
MS BRUCE: Well, some will. Some will. So in – again, this is a proposal. This obviously could change. But as you have offices that are cut or even some bureaus that were set up for a specific situation that end up being cut entirely, that you will have people who then, Foreign Service officers, career workers, et cetera being able to apply for something else. So these are a – it’s a dynamic where you’ve got a certain number of open seats that exist and then people who, of course, will then be out of the seat where they were if, in fact, their office is cut or even folded into another bureau.
So these are – again, this is, again, a road map and it’s a dynamic, whereas we’ve said in the past certain dynamics where people – and this is new for me as somebody who’s never worked for government – very much, in a way, like the military where you can be working for the State Department, working in a specific, let’s say, embassy overseas and then that job ends, and then you come home and you get slotted into a new job. That – I think for the American people, maybe for large corporations, that makes sense. But that’s how it works here when, of course, that’s possible. So that is possible, and we will clearly watch that as it plays out.
Yes, sir.
QUESTION: Thank you very much, Tammy. You said things will – you said things will look different, and thank you for that response.
MS BRUCE: Sure.
QUESTION: But I think a lot of people around the world will be wondering what – especially perhaps in the Middle East, Africa – what it will actually mean for them on the ground, what – how will these changes take effect? Will we see offices over there that are being closed, the consulates and so on? Can you talk a little bit about what people around the world can actually expect?
MS BRUCE: Well, I can’t speak to – it’s a very separate issue, right? This is an organizational roadmap for this department here, right, in Washington, D.C. The arguments about what will occur in other countries when you’re talking about embassies and consulates, that’s not addressed here. It’s not a factor that this – this reorg doesn’t affect them except, as I’ve mentioned, is more involvement, right, more direct – direct person-to-person framework, as opposed to bureaucracy-to-bureaucracy.
No more calling up USAID and going through 17 messages and trying to get an answer back about what’s happening with a certain grant or what’s happening with a certain plan, that this is really in a way that I think I’ve heard many people here note, including the Secretary and the deputy secretary, of returning the State Department to its traditional base, to the nature of human diplomacy, of getting things done, and my goodness, especially in the 21st century that moves so rapidly, faster than any other time in history.
And this is what the State Department used to be able to do. It has grown, as the Secretary’s statements indicated, quite bloated, unable to move, stuck in really just a – just a bloated inability bureaucratically to make decisions or to get things done. And if decisions are made, the levels that have to be gone through extend the amount of time to where you can get a decision made.
So I would say for embassies and consulates and the world itself, as they’re already seeing when it comes to the way that President Trump operates, the way that Secretary Rubio operates, it’s about faster results with, I think, a more nimble effort.
All right. Yes, Humeyra.
QUESTION: Thank you, Tammy. So in the reorg we see that the under secretary for Civilian Security, Democracy, Human Rights, as known as J inside the State Department, seems to have been eliminated, and some of the bureaus under that is being put under – brought under different under secretaries. But for example, Office of Global Criminal Justice, which works on monitoring atrocities overseas, which cooperates with different governments on war crimes accountability, seems to be completely eliminated.
So I’m wondering – this under secretariat was a place where U.S. basically did democracy and rights promotion globally. Does the new State Department under President Trump no longer sees that as a mission? Is that no longer a priority?
MS BRUCE: Sure.
QUESTION: Yeah, I have a follow-up.
MS BRUCE: I mean, it’s a legitimate question. Again, we have – we have grown used to seeing something and then that would indicate that’s where that lives, and if that’s gone, the effort is gone. Many times during the USAID argument I’ve made that argument. Just because the USAID building was going to be something else doesn’t mean – or that the – certain aid was cut that was not long with our – aligned with our vision or President Trump’s vision doesn’t mean that our commitment to foreign aid ended.
So you’re right; there are going to be certain offices and certain bureaus that are going to be gone or folded into other bureaus. I would say this is one of the most important aspects of this. For everyone in the building and everyone watching at home, because you might have had a specific bureau that dealt with a discrete issue doesn’t mean because it’s now folded into another larger bureau doesn’t mean that it’s gone or we don’t care.
It means that, in fact, certain issues deserve to be considered part – not like some specialized, separate, segregated interest. Why shouldn’t that interest be in every bureau, right? If you’ve got bureaus that – and for people watching at home, as I mentioned I think in my very first briefing, that the State Department isn’t just a bunch of people at a desk looking at the internet and people figuring out what it is they want to say to a world leader.
There’s bureaus filled with people who care about the country, the State Department, and are experts, researchers, individuals who are committed to a certain region who understand it, who have also, though, the relationships with people in the countries in that region. And then they inform us. They do the research. They inform me for this briefing. I go onto the screen and it’s every bureau in this building that has what we call lines, which are – which is the information about what’s happening on an issue. They tell me what those things are, what – why it matters, and what – et cetera.
So I come here and a great deal of what I say to you, if not most, is from the body of knowledge from the people who work in this building who are the Foreign Service officers, the career people, right, the career people, these – the Civil Service officers and workers who are here.
So that’s how this – it is the government as a whole is people. It is a collection of people who’ve gathered to further the Founders’ vision, and who with each election gather to further the vision of the person who leads this government.
So when we think about the nature of USAID or those other bureaus you mentioned, if a bureau is gone, that is – certainly all these issues are important. It means that we’re looking at certainly blending in with the regional bureaus, taking certain issues away from being specialty issues and making sure that they’re in the frameworks of the bureaus so that they can be weaved in and dealt with as a whole within all the work.
Yes.
QUESTION: Can I follow up on Ukraine?
MS BRUCE: Of course. Please.
QUESTION: Can we stay with this?
MS BRUCE: No? Next, once we get through this.
QUESTION: Okay, I do have a follow-up on this too.
MS BRUCE: Okay. Hold it, but I’ll make sure I give it to you guys. We’re good.
QUESTION: You said earlier that – you talked about some of the programs and you described them as the aims of the programs were not in line with the aims of the country. Now there are country – like, U.S. has made democracy promotion a priority, but that priority actually did not go down well with some of the countries in the world. So if a country – for example, a lot of people would give the example of Hungary. I mean, U.S. has funded some independent media organizations in Hungary. If those are in contradiction with Hungary’s goals, the U.S. is no longer going to do that kind of thing?
MS BRUCE: Oh, no, no, it’s not – without, of course, speculating on what we would do in a particular country, the point is, is that American tax dollars that are sent as aid or to supplement something in another country deserves to be used to reflect the values and the interests of the United States, which of course is democracy and freedom around the world. I think it’s safe to say that with all of our actions – certainly the Trump Administration – we have made it clear that that is our priority.
But also, making sure that the ambassadors who are also appointed – who are representing this nation in countries and others who work at the consulates in concert with the nation that we are working with diplomatically – that we have a coalition, if you will, on knowing how that money is being spent and making sure that the stakeholders actually have a say. I think that’s fair. Some people would argue that sending money into a country, spending on something that nobody else discussed – like as USAID would do – is unfair and that the people in the country that we’re working with have – should have a say.
But bottom line is this now moves into something that is more accountable, more specific, easier to describe, easier to ask questions about, and easier, effectively, to – for everyone involved here at the State Department and at the embassies and consulates involved, more accessible and more transparent.
All right. Yes.
QUESTION: Okay, I just wanted to follow up on Humeyra, on Global Criminal Justice.
MS BRUCE: Sure.
QUESTION: Because there seems to be a bit of a mixed message, because on the one hand this is clearly being eliminated from the organizational chart, but when we’re pressing you on it you’re saying —
MS BRUCE: Well, it may be moved. I mean, things may – if you don’t see it on the chart, it may be moved.
QUESTION: But I – and then the Secretary has retweeted an article which says very specifically that this is an aggressive shakeup; it will close agency offices, including those launched to further human rights, advance democracy overseas, counterextremism, and prevent war crimes. So it’s just a simple question, really. Is it – is the investigation and prevention of war crimes overseas still an important —
MS BRUCE: Of course.
QUESTION: — piece of work and a priority of the State Department?
MS BRUCE: Democracy is always important, obviously. And again, going – and I understand the tendency.
QUESTION:I understand, but the question is about war crimes.
MS BRUCE: I understand the tendency. War crimes – again, for me being here now, we’re approaching what, a hundred days? My deciding to do this is based on this nation’s history, and it clearly is committed to the nature of the values of the American people and of this country.
And just because – and this is why I think it’s difficult to do. You’ve seen a bureau dedicated just to that. Just because it has been folded into a different bureau or as an element underneath a different kind of office, and that particular bureau that was maybe specialized, which could be implemented in a better, more nimble, faster way – especially when we’re talking about war crimes and things immediately that are moving on the ground – this is the kind of adjustment and reorganization that makes it better. And that will always be the argument: This will be seen.
But it is – it is of course – those values that you know are American values remain, and while the approach or the bureaus or an office might be called something differently or even eliminated as an office, but is moved through the bureau as a whole, you’ll see that the American approach to the world not only remains the same but will be more obvious, more clear, more dynamic, and more active.
All right.
QUESTION: Do you know where will that role move to? Because it’s very hard to see in the chart, for example, on war crimes or Global Criminal Justice, where that will now exist.
MS BRUCE: Well, but again, this is a roadmap. It is a plan. This is something that in this process – and there is a process in this government – where there may be certain things that change. And there’ll be a point where we’re talking about implementation. So those details – this gives you, I think, a very good idea, transparently for everyone who’s watching this, that this is a change. It is – the issue is – certainly sometimes we all know that change is difficult, but in this particular case it had to happen because of the bulk, because of the unsustainability of the size of the government. And that’s why we’re doing it.
All right. Yes, sir.
QUESTION: Thank you, Tammy. Two questions. I know this came up on different setting, just wanted to make sure —
MS BRUCE: It’s the same issue?
QUESTION: Yes.
MS BRUCE: Okay.
QUESTION: To put you on the record that this will not impact whatsoever when it comes to the department’s reports on different issues like human rights, which appears to be delayed.
MS BRUCE: Well, I can’t – I’m not going to speculate on whatsoever impact on how a report is issued, when it’s issued, the content of the report, the nature of how our discussing human rights is done. I will not – all of that would require speculation here beyond, I think, the reorganization report.
QUESTION: And my second question. I know that – I guess the spokesperson’s role will be promoted; congratulations on that – but I want to understand, with the GEC – closure of GEC recently, the Global Engagement Center —
MS BRUCE: GEC, yes.
QUESTION: — and also —
MS BRUCE: Yes. Now, that’s a very good question, yeah.
QUESTION: And also eliminating some of the fundings, like grants to Moldova to fight against Russian disinformation —
MS BRUCE: Well —
QUESTION: Is the issue of Russian disinformation or Chinese disinformation – is this something that you are concerned about, or are you out of business of combating it?
MS BRUCE: Well, it’s obvious that everyone’s concerned about interference in elections. None of us want that. But, of course, the specifics of how a reorganizational roadmap is not going to – I’m not going to be able to answer the question about how that would be affected, of course. But – and your other question was —
QUESTION: Russian – Chinese and Russian disinformation and combating —
MS BRUCE: No, there was a different one. I just —
QUESTION: Your office will be promoted. I see the —
MS BRUCE: Well, it’s – it’s – and this is, I think again, a bit in the weeds for the people at home. I mean, there is an organizational chart. My office is now answerable to the Secretary, which of course all of you probably already presumed that. That’s true, but now technically it sits within that umbrella. So nothing has really changed in that regard except it’s a little bit more specific and obvious when it comes to the nature of my work.
QUESTION: Can you please come back to me later on Ukraine?
MS BRUCE: Well, I – forgive me. I am going to move on. I was also going to ask – answer your first question, which —
QUESTION: GEC.
MS BRUCE: The GEC. Thank you. He remembered. In fact, that’s a good question, because things beyond this roadmap will also happen. That bureau has been eliminated. Things will change in the State Department separate from this roadmap. That bureau, which had been ordered to be removed last fall – what they did is they changed its name and moved people around. And so that, of course – by eliminating that bureau, $50 million a year – perfect example – that worked to censor the American public. That is not, certainly, the vision of the Trump Administration or the American people who put him in office. So yes, that bureau is gone. It is really gone this time, and the American people are better off for it.
QUESTION: Can I just ask one quick question?
MS BRUCE: Yes, of course you can.
QUESTION: It’s on this process.
MS BRUCE: Yes.
QUESTION: There is an internal State Department memo that was put out about this that said that the under secretaries are going to be submitting a path to reduce domestic staff by 15 percent. Can you just help us understand how the leadership in charge of this reorg came up with the 15 percent number and if there’s any wiggle room there, or if that’s set in stone?
MS BRUCE: Well, you said this is an internal document. I’m not going to speak on something that you may or may – I’m not going to presume you didn’t see something, so forgive me. But I’m not going to speak on the specifics of something like that, but the under secretaries do have a role here. This is, again, not from on high things being swept away with one of those large yard brooms. This is a very specific dynamic brought to the under secretaries, who have daily operational experience.
I see you. Keep your hand down, please. I’m sorry, it’s a little distracting.
These are under secretaries who are working daily with the people in this building, who work in this building, who know what’s being produced, who know what has to happen, and they are best suited to make a determination when it comes to this roadmap about how to apply the nature of what we want to accomplish. So the under secretaries are directly involved and they will – I think they’ll have about 30 days to make their own plan in this framework, and then, of course, we’ll see how that manifests in the meantime.
QUESTION: And then just one quick question.
MS BRUCE: Sure.
QUESTION: Is DOGE involved at all on this plan, or was this just a State Department proposal?
MS BRUCE: This I think is a very good example of the importance – we know the American people love the result of DOGE. I think there were some questions, perhaps, about how it was applied. And what we do know is that the DOGE approach, the goal of that entity and of that committee, is something the President appreciated and still does, as do the American people very much.
But when – I believe the President said a few weeks ago that ultimately this was going to be approach – an approach that the secretaries were going to begin to apply. And also that does make sense, because whether it’s the secretaries or the under secretaries or the people running the offices, it is a daily – the daily work of individuals committed to the country, making a difference for the world, and the people on the ground working together know best about how this works, what could change, and how it should change.
So this is, I think, a very good example of the continuation of that mission and the value of that mission to cut government down to size, get people used to the idea that it can happen without it being a bad thing, and then watching the benefits that flow. So secretaries now in charge of this – remember, this is a – from an executive order. This is a whole-of-government – every department looking at how they can make their department more efficient, less burdensome, less bureaucratic. This is the State Department’s version of that. I would say that DOGE is not in charge of this, but this is the result of what we’ve learned and the fact that we appreciate the results, and we want more of those results. And it is now in the hands of the secretaries as well.
All right. All right. Shaun.
QUESTION: Can I switch topics? Is it —
MS BRUCE: All right. Now, are we done here? So we should switch to some other important topics we have. As a matter of fact, one of my rules is, of course, our friend Karoline Leavitt will be starting in about 10 to 15 minutes. I’ve started earlier here because of the nature of the issues, but there are some other issues on our plate. Shall we start with some other ones at this point?
QUESTION: Sure. Not that —
MS BRUCE: Shaun, go ahead. You were first.
QUESTION: Sure. Not that I’m not interested in reorganization, but —
MS BRUCE: Yes.
QUESTION: Could I ask you – Russia said today that – or Russian state media said that Special Envoy Witkoff will be on his way to Moscow. Is that something you can confirm? And if so, could you explain the nature of his discussions this time?
MS BRUCE: I can’t confirm that, no.
QUESTION: Cannot?
MS BRUCE: I cannot.
QUESTION: Is it incorrect, or is it just —
MS BRUCE: I can’t speak to that.
QUESTION: Okay. But –
MS BRUCE: Yes. I mean, that is – yeah, that’s not something I can speak to.
QUESTION: Okay. Could I ask you about the Secretary’s schedule?
MS BRUCE: Sure.
QUESTION: Just if I’m not mistaken, you were on Fox earlier this morning, and you mentioned –
MS BRUCE: Yeah.
QUESTION: — the potential of travel.
MS BRUCE: Right, sure.
QUESTION: Could you just explain his travel schedule?
MS BRUCE: Yes. There’s – and there’s – normally when we have travel schedules, you guys get an announcement, and there was no announcement. And I was asked, and I’d known that this was possible and had mentioned it, presuming it would happen. The – as we know, Secretary Rubio is a busy man. He is one of the most active, if not the most active, Secretary of State I think we’ve had. And that, of course, affects every day for him. And so when there’s certain plans, they’re conditional. And in this particular instance, while the meetings in London are still occurring, he will not be attending. But that is not a statement regarding the meetings; it’s a statement about logistical issues in his schedule.
QUESTION: Can you confirm who will participate from the U.S. side?
MS BRUCE: Well, I do know – yes – that General Kellogg is there, and so he will be having those conversations. So we look forward to hearing back from him about whether or not we’ve had some success in London.
QUESTION: Just briefly from me —
QUESTION: (Inaudible.)
MS BRUCE: I’m sorry?
QUESTION: On the U.S. hostage —
MS BRUCE: All right. That is another issue, and I will get back to you in a moment, but we’ve had several other people who’ve been waiting to deal with that. But let me – yeah, I think that that’s – I think that’s all I can say to you about London at this point.
QUESTION: Could – just briefly, the Secretary on Friday said that – essentially that we’re going to see within days whether it’s a – his exact words – whether it’s possible to go forward with negotiating an end to the war. Is that something that General Kellogg is going to be looking at now? Is this really the time –
MS BRUCE: Well, what we all look to is President Trump’s approach. President Trump has expressed optimism about what’s possible. And of course, he has great envoys and a great Secretary of State who’s been moving through to determine if that is, in fact, the case. President Trump wants this to be solved diplomatically. Obviously, he does not and does not believe – like, when it comes to certainly Ukraine and Russia, they’ve said multiple times, both of the Secretary and the President have said that this cannot be won militarily, and so they want diplomacy to work.
The Secretary said a few weeks ago at NATO that it was a few weeks where we would determine as we look to Russia based on their actions, not their words. And of course, now a few weeks have gone by, and we are in London. And I think it’s about what will be reported, which we will know soon. But then that is also the good news about being the Secretary of State, is that he is the one who sees everything, can make the assessment of everything that’s on the ground. And of course, in partnership with the President, who is the visionary and the decider, that will make a determination about whether or not peace is possible.
Yes, ma’am.
QUESTION: Thank you so much, Tammy. The President of Colombia Gustavo Petro is claiming that he no longer has a visa to travel to the United States. Can you confirm that report and explain the justification, if he’s right or not?
MS BRUCE: Well, I can’t do that. Of course, we don’t speak about direct individual visa issues. We – visa records are confidential for everyone. But we are aware of the reports; we’re aware of what he said. What I can say is that our two countries have had opportunities to create a brighter future for our citizens through efforts aimed at targeting violent drug cartels that are now poisoning our citizens and destabilizing our region, creating economic opportunities that advance prosperity, and ending the regional crisis of illegal immigration. So that’s what I know about our two countries. His comments are not something that I’ll remark on.
QUESTION: But can that —
MS BRUCE: All right. Yes, sir.
QUESTION: Yeah. Thank you. I have a question about the Iranian talks. Do you have any —
MS BRUCE: I’m sorry, about the —
QUESTION: The Iranian talks.
MS BRUCE: Yes.
QUESTION: Do you have any updates about the third round with the Iranian? And how do you see the Iranian engagement with Russia and China when they are updating them and talking and meeting with them about the negotiations that they have with you? And will there be the next round direct talks with them, or it’s indirect talk?
MS BRUCE: Well, I – again, these are diplomatic missions. I know I speak – often I have to say no to you when it comes to the questions you ask, because you’re looking for some details, I understand, about the nature of what may or may not happen in an issue that the world cares about. But if it involves, of course, negotiations, diplomatic considerations, diplomatic conversations here between American leaders, I’m not going to remark on that. As far as what might be next, I have nothing new to report to you at this point.
All right. Yes.
QUESTION: Thanks, Tammy. The Diplomatic Security Service says it’s been assisting the Virginia Homeland Security Task Force in arresting undocumented migrants and some people who are connected to transnational gangs. Wonder if you can say more about the decision to have DSS jump in there and whether you expect this collaboration to be ongoing and if there’s any concern that this will detract from the original mission.
MS BRUCE: Well, good question, if that’s accurate. And so I need to – we’ll take that back, and I’ll get back to you on that.
And your question is going to be the last one, because we are just a few minutes to 1 o’clock. Thank you, everyone. We will have – I do want to let you know also for Thursday, my principal deputy, Tommy Pigott, will be briefing you for the first time. So that will be fun on Thursday. It’s a very, very exciting time. Thank you, everyone. Appreciate it. Thank you. Have a great rest of your day.
(The briefing was concluded at 12:57 p.m.)

Trump campaign echoes right-wing media’s lies about an EV mandate
Special ProgramsClimate & Energy (https://www.mediamatters.org/climate-energy)
Written by Ilana Berger (https://www.mediamatters.org/author/ilana-berger)

- The Biden administration is cutting car pollution and incentivizing automakers to produce electric vehicles. Right-wing media repeatedly misconstrued these efforts, falsely claiming they were attempting to take away voters’ gas-powered cars or forcing them to buy electric vehicles. No such federal mandate exists. Yet now the Trump-Vance campaign has adopted this false claim.
- ## Harris has supported efforts to expand access to electric vehicles during her time as vice president, but that did not include a federal mandate
- The EPA finalized a tailpipe emissions rule in March, but it was not a mandate. In March, the EPA established tailpipe emissions standards for the auto industry in a bid to slash greenhouse gas emissions. According to NPR, “The EPA rules are not written as an EV mandate or a ban on the sale of gas cars. … Instead, the EPA sets standards that apply across an entire fleet – meaning an automaker still can make vehicles with higher emissions, as long as they also make enough very low or zero-emission vehicles that it averages out.” NPR, [3/20/24 (https://www.npr.org/2024/03/20/1239092833/biden-epa-auto-emissions-evs)]
- E&E News clarified that “there is no EV ‘mandate’ from the administration, although President Joe Biden and Vice President Harris have backed a series of climate policies that seek to incentivize the production and purchasing of EVs.” E&E News, [9/3/24 (https://www.eenews.net/articles/fact-checking-trump-and-vance-on-energy/?utm_medium=email)]
- The New York Times also wrote of the EPA rule that it “does not mandate sales of electric vehicles, and consumers can still buy and drive gas-powered cars.” The New York Times, [3/20/24 (https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/20/climate/biden-clean-car-rule-key-facts.html)]
- The Inflation Reduction Act allocated billions toward supporting the adoption of EVs through tax credits, loans, and funding for charging networks, critical minerals, and battery manufacturing. Harris cast the tie-breaking vote that passed the Inflation Reduction Act, which created $47 billion in EV investment on top of tax credits and loans. Atlas EV Hub, \9/2/22 (https://www.atlasevhub.com/data_story/3-billion-in-federal-funding-for-evs-to-date/); accessed 9/6/22 (https://www.atlasevhub.com/materials/the-inflation-reduction-act-ev-provisions/); Twitter/X, [8/7/24 (https://x.com/VP/status/1821258926282961366)]
- Harris also oversaw parts of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act that distributed funding to school districts for electric buses and to states for EV charging stations. The act, also known as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, provided $7.5 billion to build a network of charging stations, and $900 million of that went to the electric school bus initiative. AP News, \12/13/21 (https://apnews.com/article/joe-biden-technology-business-electric-vehicles-ee21590eee61025fa149549b61e19433); Spectrum News, [5/29/24 (https://ny1.com/nyc/all-boroughs/politics/2024/05/28/epa-biden-electric-school-buses)]
- ## Right-wing media falsely claim that the Biden-Harris administration has already implemented an EV mandate
- Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry and Fox contributor Tammy Bruce claimed that “the EV mandate” is an example of Harris “moving money into these Green New Deal projects.” On The Evening Edit, Bruce said that Harris admitted during her CNN interview that “the Inflation Reduction Act was about moving money into those, that New Green Deal projects.” “Yeah, and that’s what this administration is all about … pushing money into these programs. The EV mandate’s a great example of it,” said Perry. Fox Business, The Evening Edit, [8/30/24 (https://www.mediamatters.org/media/4023362)]
- On Newsmax’s American Agenda, right-wing commentator Tom Del Beccaro said, “Michigan really should be easy for Trump at this point. They — Kamala put in the EV mandates. She’ll do it again, and the EV mandates have been a disaster.”Newsmax, American Agenda, [8/29/24 (https://www.mediamatters.org/media/4023397)]
- The Washington Examiner falsely characterized tax credits in the IRA as an “EV mandate.” “Kamala Harris’ EV mandate costs taxpayers $7,500 and Ford $44,000 per car,” the article said. “Kamala Harris has debuted yet another 180-degree policy reversal via press release,” the article said. The Washington Examiner, [8/28/24 (https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/beltway-confidential/3136364/harris-ev-mandate-costs-taxpayers/)]
- Fox host Sean Hannity called the EPA rule a “ban” and claimed that the administration is “finding any way they can to trick you, the American people, into supporting something that many Americans don't want.” Fox contributor Ari Fleischer, former White House press secretary under George W. Bush, said, “I think all of us want to do something about carbon emissions, etc., but the best way to do it is not through command and control mandates that will not work.” Fox News, Hannity, [3/20/24 (https://www.mediamatters.org/media/4017981)]
- ## After a Harris campaign official said Harris does not support an EV mandate, right-wing media insisted that she could not change, or has not changed, her position on the issue
- In August, Harris’ director of rapid response, Ammar Moussa, wrote in an email to supporters that “Vice President Harris does not support an electric vehicle mandate.” The Hill, [8/29/24 (https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/4852729-harris-issues-center-shifted/)]
- On Hannity, Fox host Jeanine Pirro said that Harris “can’t say she is against the EV mandate when she is the one who, I believe, sponsored the bill. And in addition to that, the bill had times built in where, after 2030 you had to have only 50 percent of the cars could be fossil fuel or gas-fueled, and by 2040-45 -- I mean, these are not flip-flops, Joe. These are lies."Fox News, Hannity, [8/29/24 (https://www.mediamatters.org/media/4023364)]
- On The Faulkner Focus, Fox News contributor Steve Hilton claimed that Harris “does want to take away your car.” Hilton said, “They claim that it’s not a mandate because it’s not mandating what you buy, it only mandates what can be sold. As if there is a difference between those two things. … As far as it stands today, Kamala Harris does want to take away your car, she does want to take away your truck.” Fox News, The Faulkner Focus, [8/28/24 (https://www.mediamatters.org/media/4023398)]
- ## Former President Trump and his running mate JD Vance have adopted the false right-wing media claim that there is a federal EV mandate and that it is negatively impacting voters
- At an August 8 press conference at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida, Trump said that if Harris becomes president, “everybody’s going to be forced to buy an electric car, which they're not going to do, because they don't want that. People want gasoline-propelled cars. They want hybrids. They want to have everything, and they want electric.” Politico, [8/8/24 (https://subscriber.politicopro.com/article/2024/08/trump-everybody-forced-buy-electric-vehicle-00173287)]
- In March, when the Biden administration finalized a new Environmental Protection Agency rule that set strict limits on pollution from new gas-powered cars, Trump campaign national press secretary Karoline Leavitt called the move a “job-killing electric vehicle mandate at the federal level.”FoxNews.com, [3/28/24 (https://www.foxnews.com/politics/trump-campaign-unleashes-on-biden-for-backing-californias-gas-car-ban)]
- Trump’s official campaign account posted on X: “Crooked Joe Biden’s INSANE and RADICAL EV mandates will BAN your gasoline-powered vehicles and force you to buy expensive and unreliable electric vehicles. President Trump will always protect your FREEDOM to drive what you want!”Twitter/X, [3/20/24 (https://x.com/TeamTrump/status/1770481237783719999?s=20)]

EMILY COMPAGNO (CO-HOST): The people of Hawaii are just devastated, and I want to bring this conversation to the couch now. Tammy, you are like me, where I grew up going to Hawaii ever since I was very little. I've had the honor and the privilege of having so many experiences there. I was just talking about the other day in Lahaina, Mama's Fish House, you know the famous restaurant there. I was just sharing with someone how on the menu they always cite the name of the fishermen who brought in that catch, so you know exactly who you can express your gratitude to when you are eating that lovely aloha fish. The community is devastated and so are we watching.
TAMMY BRUCE (FOX NEWS CONTRIBUTOR): Yes, and for many Americans it's great to be able to grow up either in Hawaii or in Southern California, because then it becomesreachable. This seems like an exotic place, a place maybe that many people could just never dream of even of going to. But, it really has an extraordinary culture, it's obviously an American state, these are American citizens. Plays an incredibly important role for our security, for vacations and rest and relaxation, and what Americans can and do learn from that remarkable culture of the Hawaiian people. So, I miss it a lot. When you live on the East Coast, it seems you can't really get over there. But, what's striking for me and I think Americans, we can all relate to what happens in each state. We come together in a crisis like this.
This is a crisis, even though it's far away. But, the question also becomes, how did this happen? We have to wonder about when you're dealing with — and some people are already moving into a political dynamic talking about climate change, but the reality is we need to know for really an ancient land that this hasn't happened before, why did it happen now? What was the difference? We think about volcanoes, and you know when you go there, I mean it is a magnificent, the power of nature that's there. And you are reminded of that every single day. So, this isn't necessarily something that you could never have imagined happening. But, we need to know why so that it doesn't happen again and, you know, Maui is popular for a very good reason. That particular coastline, it is magnificent, beautiful, many resorts along that area. Obviously, people rely on the tourism, all of that is now going to stop and slow down. So, Americans have to come together, really understand I think the power of the Hawaiian culture and come together for those people.

right-wing media are yet again running to the side of an accused vigilante killer, framing Daniel Penny — who has been charged with choking Jordan Neely to death on a New York subway — as a “hero” deserving of “unwavering” political and financial support.
On May 1, Penny placed Neely in a chokehold that lasted (https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/02/nyregion/subway-chokehold-death.html) at least three minutes. One witness who filmed the homicide claimed (https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/jordan-neely-chokehold-death-what-we-know-so-far-rcna83102) Neely — an unhoused Black man who had long suffered (https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/07/nyregion/jordan-neely-daniel-penny-nyc-subway.html#::text=Mr.%20Neely's%20childhood%20was%20abruptly,an%20apartment%20in%20Bayonne%2C%20N.J.) with mental illness following the murder of his mother — was restrained for as long as 15 minutes.
Bolstered by years of coverage (https://www.mediamatters.org/tucker-carlson/tucker-carlson-and-guest-agree-time-vigilante-justice-against-protesters-near) setting (https://www.mediamatters.org/fox-news/fox-news-host-says-expect-vigilante-justice-because-das-dont-do-anything-anymore) the stage to legitimize (https://www.mediamatters.org/steve-bannon/steve-bannon-and-clean-elections-usas-melody-jennings-justify-armed-vigilantism) extrajudicial violence (https://www.mediamatters.org/black-lives-matter/right-wing-media-hype-vigilante-violence-after-gunman-shoots-and-kills), right-wing media quickly attempted to justify (https://www.mediamatters.org/fox-news/right-wing-media-try-justify-jordan-neelys-death-attack-protesters) the killing, accusing the left of creating a “race hustle” and framing Penny as a good samaritan who protected the vulnerable. Penny was charged (https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/12/nyregion/daniel-penny-arrest-jordan-neely.html) with second-degree manslaughter on May 12, resulting in an immediate cycle of outrage from conservative figures who have not only lionized Penny, but also launched a widespread effort to help him escape criminal charges.
With this wave of promotion — including personal donations from right-wing commentators Tim Pool, Candace Owens, and Tammy Bruce — Penny’s defense fund has raised over $2 million (https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/crime-and-courts/online-donors-flood-daniel-penny-defense-fund-after-manslaughter-charge/4331381/) on GiveSendGo, a Christian fundraising site previously used (https://gothamist.com/news/daniel-pennys-lawyers-crowdfunding-on-a-site-thats-supported-divisive-conservative-causes) by January 6 rioters.
Right-wing media figures have lionized Penny
A number of right-wing media figures engaged in outright hero worship of Penny:
- On Fox News, The Five co-host Greg Gutfeld said (https://www.mediamatters.org/media/4005744) the indictment “is political, it’s pro-criminal, it’s anti-hero.”
- Fox host Laura Ingraham called (https://www.mediamatters.org/media/4005853) Penny a “hero” and promised (https://www.mediamatters.org/media/4005635) her “unwavering support” after warning that “the mob” pressured Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg into charging him in Neely’s killing.
- Daily Wire host Michael Knowles called (https://www.mediamatters.org/media/4005850) Penny’s manslaughter charge a “hideous miscarriage of justice” and suggested he should instead be given a “key to the city” and “a ticker-tape parade.”
- Newsmax host Greg Kelly referred (https://www.mediamatters.org/media/4005852) to Penny as “the subway hero” and suggested that he did not “technically” place Neely in a chokehold, saying, “to me, it looked like an upper-body restraint maneuver.” Guest Mark Simone then called Neely “a terrorist” and said he hoped Penny escaped charges.
Others encouraged further vigilante violence:
- OAN correspondent Caitlin Sinclair claimed (https://www.mediamatters.org/media/4005782) that “no one should be surprised at this point, here in liberal New York, when the people start to defend ourselves” from “evil in a blue city.” Sinclair also suggested that the charges against Penny mean “self-defense is no longer a right,” and said she often “wished that there was a Daniel Penny on that subway” when she was younger.
- Fox & Friends Weekend co-host Will Cain called (https://www.mediamatters.org/media/4005807) for vigilante justice against “bad people,” arguing “we need more Daniel Pennys.”
- Fox News guest Chad Robichaux said (https://www.mediamatters.org/media/4005766) Penny “did exactly what he should do. He stepped up to defend people in that car. … He did the right thing.”
Some right-wing media figures alleged that Penny was prosecuted because he is white and would have been richly rewarded otherwise:
- In a video titled (https://www.mediamatters.org/media/4005878) “The Race-Based Lynching Of A Hero Marine Veteran,” Daily Wire host Ben Shapiro claimed (https://www.mediamatters.org/media/4005820) that Penny was a “hero” and suggested that the case only received coverage so the media could “propagate the lie that America is a systemically racist country.”
- Fox contributor Leo Terrell referred (https://www.mediamatters.org/media/4005769) to Penny as a “hero” and declared that he was being prosecuted for being white.
- On Twitter, far-right personality Ian Miles Cheong said (https://twitter.com/stillgray/status/1658537825489555456?s=20): “Daniel Penny was charged because he is white and Jordan Neely is black. If the races were reversed, or if they were both the same race, this wouldn't be an issue at all and everyone would be praising Daniel for his heroism in that train.”
Right-wing media figures contributed to and promoted Penny’s legal defense fund:
- Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk called (https://twitter.com/charliekirk11/status/1657400758202142721) on his Twitter followers to “give what you can” to support Penny in his “unjust prosecution.”
- Ingraham advertised (https://www.mediamatters.org/media/4005812) Penny’s defense fund, reading comments from donors and saying he has “enormous public support,” as a chyron underneath claimed that his donation page “reveals the true America.”
- Daily Wire host Candace Owens said (https://www.mediamatters.org/media/4005847) she would have helped the “hero” if she was on the subway with Neely and insisted that her audience follow in her footsteps by donating to Penny’s defense.
- Newsmax host Rob Schmitt celebrated (https://www.mediamatters.org/media/4005771) the fundraiser’s success, saying “Daniel Penny’s defense fund is growing as basically everybody with common sense in this country realizes that this is an atrocity against him.”
- Right-wing commentator Tim Pool personally donated (https://twitter.com/Timcast/status/1658097052083970050) $20,000 to Penny’s legal fund, calling him “the Subway Good Samaritan.” Pool later said his donation was made to support “another major culture war victory,” arguing (https://www.mediamatters.org/media/4005849), “Daniel Penny doesn’t deserve to spend even a minute behind bars.”
- Fox contributor Tammy Bruce touted (https://www.mediamatters.org/media/4005848) a personal donation to Penny and called it a “statement” against his prosecution, which she claimed was “a message for no one to help anyone else” in New York City.
Right-wing media’s close relationship with vigilante justice
Penny is far from the first vigilante killer to receive the full backing of conservative media. After Kyle Rittenhouse shot three people, killing two, at an August 2020 Black Lives Matter protest in Kenosha, Wisconsin, right-wing media figures similarly jumped (https://www.mediamatters.org/black-lives-matter/gunman-killed-two-protesters-kenosha-fox-news-figures-have-sided-shooter) to his defense, soliciting donations (https://www.mediamatters.org/sean-hannity/sean-hannitys-lawyer-apparently-soliciting-donations-kenosha-gunman) and painting him as a victim who engaged in justified self-defense. Drew Hernandez — a frequent Tucker Carlson guest (https://www.foxnews.com/us/kenosha-riot-drew-hernandez-local-businesses-destroyed) who has worked with Turning Point USA (https://www.tpusa.com/bio/drew-hernandez), Steve Bannon, and Infowars (https://www.mediamatters.org/media/4005879) — even served (https://theintercept.com/2021/11/11/rittenhouse-trial-judge-blocks-prosecutor-asking-far-right-videographer-biased/) as a witness for Rittenhouse’s defense.
Since the Kenosha shooting, Rittenhouse has turned (https://twitter.com/az_rww/status/1473084860004593666) into (https://www.mediamatters.org/steven-crowder/youtube-steven-crowder-encourages-people-take-arms-against-protesters-its-not-only) a conservative (https://www.politico.com/news/2021/11/19/the-lionization-of-kyle-rittenhouse-by-the-right-523054) icon (https://www.mediamatters.org/fox-news/fox-guest-kyle-rittenhouse-little-bit-icon) and used his new platform to advocate for other vigilantes. Appearing on Tucker Carlson Tonight in April, Rittenhouse and Carlson petitioned (https://www.mediamatters.org/tucker-carlson/tucker-carlson-and-kyle-rittenhouse-campaign-pardon-texas-man-convicted-murdering) Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to pardon Daniel Perry, another right-wing media darling (https://www.mediamatters.org/tucker-carlson/fox-news-defends-texas-man-convicted-murdering-black-lives-matter-protester-and) who was found guilty of murdering a Black Lives Matter protester in July 2020 after prosecutors revealed a history of messages in which he called protesters “monkeys (https://www.statesman.com/story/news/local/2023/04/13/daniel-perry-trial-social-media-racist-anti-protester-comments-gov-abbott-garrett-foster/70113166007/)” and threatened (https://www.texastribune.org/2023/05/10/daniel-perry-murder-austin-protestor/) to kill them.
With a campaign of support behind him, Penny has joined the ranks of George Zimmerman (https://www.mediamatters.org/bill-oreilly/oreilly-trayvon-martin-died-because-he-looked-how-gangstas-look), Travis and Gregory McMichael (https://www.mediamatters.org/white-nationalism/far-right-figures-are-attempting-twist-facts-and-defend-shooting-ahmaud-arbery), Andrew Lester (https://www.mediamatters.org/media/4004049), Byron Smith (https://www.mediamatters.org/sean-hannity/hannity-defends-vigilante-killer), and various vigilante patrols (https://www.mediamatters.org/national-rifle-association/nra-news-praises-white-vigilante-patrols-shot-african-americans-after) and right-wing militias (https://www.mediamatters.org/greg-kelly/newsmaxs-greg-kelly-calls-proud-boys-conviction-sham-and-shame) whose extrajudicial violence has been excused by conservative media.

Career
Bruce holds a bachelor's degree (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bachelor%27s_degree) in political science (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Political_science) from the University of Southern California (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Southern_California).[1]
For seven years, Bruce served as president of the Los Angeles chapter of the National Organization for Women (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Organization_for_Women) (NOW) (1990–1996). Bruce served two years on NOW's board of directors, but later criticized the organization in one of her books. During the early 1990s, she spearheaded the campaign to publicly criticize the sexualized violence in the novel American Psycho (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Psycho), and led an effort to boycott (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boycott) all titles by the book's publisher, Knopf (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfred_A._Knopf), for a year.[
In 1996, the NOW Executive Board voted to censure Bruce for what it claimed were "racially insensitive comments" during the O. J. Simpson (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/O.J.Simpson) murder trial.[2] In May 1996, Bruce resigned as president of Los Angeles NOW.[3] Bruce claimed that the censure was due to her focus on domestic violence (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domestic_violence), as opposed to defense attorney Johnnie Cochran (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnnie_Cochran)'s "racial issues" trial argument.[4] Since then, Bruce has written about the dispute in her critique on what she sees as the failings of NOW and the political left (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Political_left) in general. She has said that the feminist (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feminist) establishment in the U.S. has abandoned authentic feminism.[5]
In 1997, she hosted an overnight weekendtalk show on KFI (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KFI).[6] Bruce hosted a national radio program on Talk Radio Network (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk_Radio_Network) throughout much of the 2000s.
In 2003, Bruce was appointed to serve on Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arnold_Schwarzenegger)'s transition team after his successful recall election against Gray Davis (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gray_Davis).[7]
In 2009, after President Barack Obama (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barack_Obama) and his family had moved into the White House, Bruce said, "we've got trash in the White House."[8][9]
Bruce returned to Talk Radio Network in November 2012 as a guest host during the move of The Laura Ingraham Show (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Laura_Ingraham_Show) from TRN to Courtside Entertainment Group.[citation needed]. In 2014, Bruce created a short video for the conservative YouTube channelPrager University (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prager_University) in which she summarized her criticisms of the contemporary feminist movement.[10][
She criticized an autistic child for asking Vice President Mike Pence (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Pence) for an apology when he accidentally brushed the young boy in the face.[11] She later apologized on air.[12]
In December 2018, Bruce appeared on Fox News to criticize the decision of one Scottish coffee shop to call "gingerbread men" "gingerbread people". Bruce said, "obviously, they're men". She characterized the decision by the coffee shop as "the tipping point" in policing free speech.[13][14][15]
Bruce is a Fox News contributor.[16] In 2019, she became the host of Get Tammy Bruce, which airs on theFox Nation streaming service.[17][18]
Personal life
In a 2006 interview with C-SPAN (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C-SPAN), Bruce stated she was bisexual (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bisexuality), and that for her, identifying as lesbian was a choice.[19]
At the age of 17, Bruce became lovers with 34-year-old Brenda Benet (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brenda_Benet).[20] Later, Bruce and Benet lived together for nearly a year before Bruce moved out.[20] On April 7, 1982, two years after they had first met and two weeks after Bruce moved out, Benet committed suicide at her home during a lunch date with Bruce.[20]

Newly obtained tax records shed additional light on the web of “dark money” organizations tied to President Donald Trump’s top judicial adviser that were used to funnel millions to organizations that boosted the Supreme Court nominations of Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh.
The Freedom and Opportunity Fundis helmed by Leonard Leo, a Trump confidante and longtime executive vice president at the Federalist Society, a national conservative and libertarian lawyers network based in Washington, D.C.
Between its inception in 2016 (https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/5749702-Freedom-and-Opportunity-Fund-2016-990.html) and 2017, the fund donated $4 million (https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/5749670-Freedom-and-Opportunity-Fund-2017-990.html)to the Independent Women’s Voice (IWV), a D.C.-based dark money organization, according to tax filings obtained by the Center for Responsive Politics and MapLight. IWV was vociferous in its defense of Kavanaugh, who was accused of sexual assault by Christine Blasey Ford, a Stanford professor who knew the justice while he was in prep school. IWV’s president, Tammy Bruce, said on Fox News (https://dailycaller.com/2018/09/24/bruce-kavanaugh-scapegoat/) last year that Kavanaugh was “effectively being used as a stand-in for all perpetrators.”
The fund is part of a broader coalition of dark money organizations (https://www.opensecrets.org/news/2018/11/trump-inauguration-money-links-secretive-dark-money/) in Leo’s orbit that have helped guide the selection and ensure the confirmation of Trump’s conservative court picks. Leo is closely tied (https://www.thedailybeast.com/the-secrets-of-leonard-leo-the-man-behind-trumps-supreme-court-pick?ref=scroll) to the Judicial Crisis Network (JCN), the primary public advocate for both Gorsuch and Kavanaugh.
He’s also the president of a nonprofit, America Engaged, that quietly donated $2.7 million (https://maplight.org/story/conservative-legal-interests-funneled-2-7-million-to-nra-freedom-partners-around-gorsuch-fight/)to the National Rifle Association and Freedom Partners Chamber of Commerce, a nonprofit affiliated with billionaire libertarian Charles Koch, around the same time the two groups advocated for Gorsuch. Leo was also thrust into the spotlight for his ties to a mysterious $1 million donation (https://www.opensecrets.org/news/2018/11/trump-inauguration-money-links-secretive-dark-money/) to Trump’s inaugural committee by the BH Group, a Northern Virginia limited-liability corporation.
Although the Freedom and Opportunity Fund isn’t required to disclose its donors, records show it received $400,000 (https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/5676158-BH-Fund-2017-990.html)in 2017 from the BH Fund, a Leo-affiliated nonprofit that donated $2.3 million to America Engaged in 2017. The Freedom and Opportunity Fund listed both the BH Fund and America Engaged as related organizations in its 2017 tax filings. All three list Leo as their president.
The BH Fund itself was funded by an anonymous $24 million donation. The organization first made an appearance as being responsible for enforcing a donation agreement between a secret $20 million donor[seid?] and the Antonin Scalia Law School at George Mason University, whose president came under scrutiny for allegedly allowing donors to dictate academic and hiring conditions in return for financial gifts.
[nice chart (https://cdn1.opensecrets.org/news/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/01160340/Supreme-Dark-Money.png)
A central player in Leo’s network is a consulting and public relations firm called (https://cdn1.opensecrets.org/news/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/01160340/Supreme-Dark-Money.png)Creative Response Concepts (https://www.opensecrets.org/expends/vendor.php?vendor=Creative%20Response%20Concepts) (CRC), which gained notoriety for helping create Swift Boat Veterans for Truth (https://www.opensecrets.org/527s/527cmtedetail_contribs.php?ein=201041228&cycle=2004), the group that attacked 2004 Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry’s Vietnam war record.
CRC has received payments from many of the organizations in Leo’s web. The firm was paid $400,000 by BH Fund (https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/5750532-BH-Fund-2017-990.html) and $100,000 by America Engaged (https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/5750155-America-Engaged-2017-990.html) in 2017. JCN has regularly paid CRC, as has the Wellspring Committee, which has been JCN’s primary funder for many years. CRC has also worked with the Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust (https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/5205281-FACT-2017-990.html), a dark money-funded nonprofit that was previously run (https://www.opensecrets.org/news/2018/11/one-donor-accounts-for-all-dark-money-funding-whitakers-nonprofit/) by Trump’s former acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker.
The majority of the Freedom and Opportunity Fund’s money came from a $2 million anonymous donor. During its second year of operation, the Freedom and Opportunity Fund’s revenue dropped to $3.2 million, roughly half of its 2016 intake of almost $6.3 million. Nevertheless, the organization spent $4.2 million, which left it more than $1 million in the hole at the end of 2017.
Notable among its grants was a $500,000 donation to Making America Great (https://www.opensecrets.org/news/2017/05/nonprofits-backing-trump-have-deep-swampy-ties/), a pro-Trump 501(c)(4) nonprofit spearheaded by conservative funder Rebekah Mercer after a falling-out with America First Policies (https://www.opensecrets.org/news/2018/11/pro-trump-dark-money-group-tax-return/).
The Freedom and Opportunity Fund also sent money to groups from the Koch orbit (https://www.opensecrets.org/news/2018/11/2017-financials-of-the-kochs-dark-money-network/). The Center for Individual Freedom received $325,500, while FreedomWorks got $100,000 and 60 Plus Association got another $60,000. The fund also sent $107,500 to American Commitment, another offshoot of the Koch network that has campaigned (https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/4xjjeq/shady-conservative-group-is-flooding-the-fcc-with-anti-net-neutrality-comments) against net neutrality rules.
The fund gave another $500,000 to theConservative Action Network (https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/5752804-Conservative-Action-Network-2016-990.html), a nonprofit formed in 2016 to support (https://www.dallasnews.com/news/politics/2016/08/08/cruz-critics-urge-mccaul-challenge-2018-senate-primary) Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas).

no lnx fox News host delivers 7-minute screed calling Democrats a ‘cult in a never-ending fight with reality’
David Badash and The New Civil Rights Movement December 10, 2021
Fox News is auditioning hosts for its 7 PM “Fox News Primetime” show, and on Thursday night longtime Fox contributor Tammy Bruce went full-force far-right extremist to get the job.
Bruce is no stranger to controversy. In the mid-1990’s she exited as president of the Los Angeles chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW) after being accused of “racially insensitive comments.” Later, during the first months of the Obama presidency she remarked, “We’ve got trash in the White House.”
But on Thursday night for seven minutes and 13 seconds Bruce was on fire, berating the left and Democrats – blaming them for just about everything by using everything that’s wrong with the right. It was an example of epic projection.
According to Bruce, the left “is a cult in a never-ending fight with reality, hell-bent on making the world bend to their lies, all while trying to silence and destroy anything and anyone who dares to question the orthodoxy.”
READ: Justice Sotomayor blasts the Supreme Court’s right-wing majority: ‘Should have put an end to this madness’]
Sound familiar? Like the right wing of America, who refuse to accept the reality of the coronavirus pandemic, the fact that vaccines, masks, and social distancing work? Refuse to accept that climate change is real and massive voter fraud is not?
Bruce actually uses the word “cult” eleven times in seven minutes.
“I know you’ve heard that the cancer of woke-ism is the left new religion, but it’s actually not. It’s their cultic foundation, a set of rules and instructions met to manipulate and control,” she claimed, never offering up any actual concrete evidence. “Now keep in mind a cult has some basic tenets and behaviors we see not just with the so called progressives, but now being applied by the Biden administration itself, among other aspects, including groupthink as its foundational requirement, questions are not encouraged, and even punished followers are to worship a group leader.”
Here’s a question: Does the left worship President Joe Biden? Hillary Clinton? No.

Does the right worship Donald Trump? What do you think?
[pix djt on cross]
“The cult follows and controls all aspects of members lives, fear and paranoia are instilled to keep followers close and trusting only a fellow members,” Bruce continues. “Outsiders, those who escaped, and opponents are smeared and cast as evil and dangerous and members are monitored constantly to ensure conformity and allegiance to the cultic system. Sound familiar? Yeah.”
Yes indeed.
We need no more recent example than the Fox News Christmas tree, which a 49-year old homeless man set on fire just past midnight on Wednesday. Fox News spent two days declaring it was an attack on America and an attack on Christianity – both of which are false. Police even said it was not a political act. But Fox News got so ramped up they literally compared the attack on their tree to the attack on Pearl Harbor.
READ: Tucker Carlson’s ‘baseless conspiracy theory’ about the Jan. 6 rioters has been forcefully debunked]
“Or what about on COVID?” Bruce asks, somehow pretending it’s not a deadly airborne disease that’s killed 800,000 Americans, “Where double-masked big city liberals meander aimlessly around Manhattan using facial coverings as some sort of partisan signaling exercise, despite being double-vaccinated, many with their boosters, while being socially distanced? That’s not science. That’s insanity. It’s also a way to condition people into having every aspect of their daily lives controlled by a faceless bureaucratic cult. And what about young children still being forced to suffer under masked learning, despite no science to back it up?”
That’s just plain coronavirus disinformation unworthy of any “news” organization. Maybe Bruce should chat with her co-workers over at The Wall Street Journal, who published a report detailing two studies showing students and staff in schools need to be masked. Or the CDC.
After her lie-filled rant Fox News immortalized her fallacious attack by posting the text of part of her speech online, as if it were a valid news story.
It’s not.

conservative social media networks and right-wing personalities, including Fox Nation host Tammy Bruce, have seized on a misunderstood COVID-19 mortality statistic from the CDC as “evidence” that pandemic public health fears are overblown. The viral spread of the “6%” meme seems to speak to both a larger scientific illiteracy and the rapidity with which the conspiratorial right jumps on misinformation that appears convenient to their political narrative. Salon spoke with scientific experts to understand the origin of this meme, and how it has been misinterpreted.
In a report (https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/vsrr/covid_weekly/index.htm?fbclid=IwAR3-wrg3tTKK5-9tOHPGAHWFVO3DfslkJ0KsDEPQpWmPbKtp6EsoVV2Qs1Q#ExcessDeaths) published earlier this month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) wrote that “for 6% of the deaths” reported involving the novel coronavirus, the data indicates that “COVID-19 was the only cause mentioned.” This means that there were co-morbid conditions — meaning multiple health conditions that compounded the coronavirus’ effects — associated with the COVID-19 death on 94% of the other occasions. The CDC added that, “for deaths with conditions or causes in addition to COVID-19, on average, there were 2.6 additional conditions or causes per death.”
Many on Twitter seized upon the “6%” data point to argue that the United States has been overreacting to the pandemic.
“All of this for SIX PERCENT!” tweeted conservative writer and former congressional candidate DeAnna Lorraine (https://twitter.com/DeAnna4Congress/status/1300414798367252482).Another former congressional candidate, this one a veteran and self-described “Torah Observant Christian” named Nick Moutos (https://twitter.com/votenickmoutos/status/1300310892878462976), tweeted “#Fact Only 6% of reported #COVID19 deaths were “from” the virus. The other 94% were from other comorbidities. Death toll actually near 10K, or roughly .003% of the US population. #SixPercent"
fox News contributor and Fox Nation host Tammy Bruce (https://twitter.com/HeyTammyBruce/status/1300175483016019968)tweeted about the meme, too, making her point through understatement: “6% Six. Percent.” Charlie Kirk (https://twitter.com/charliekirk11/status/1300135845555396613), the founder and president of right-wing campus group Turning Point USA (https://www.salon.com/2018/03/25/how-a-diaper-protest-led-to-the-implosion-of-a-conservative-student-group/), echoed Bruce, tweeting simply: “6%.”
A self-described pro-Trump political candidate in Virginia, Jason Alexander Roberge (https://twitter.com/JasonRobergeVA/status/1300224704008073216), tweeted that “I was called a conspiracy theorist in March for calling out the FAKE covid numbers: 6% Six Percent.”
Perhaps most shockingly, a Twitter account called The Cain Gang (https://twitter.com/atrupar/status/1300415126986731524) — which describes itself as “formerly run by Herman Cain (https://www.salon.com/2020/08/15/herman-cains-twitter-account-is-creeping-everyone-out-it-is-still-trolling-after-his-death_partner/), now supervised by his team and family” — tweeted that “it looks like the virus is not as deadly as the mainstream media first made it out to be.” That tweet was later deleted. Cain died of COVID-19 (https://www.salon.com/2020/08/15/herman-cains-twitter-account-is-creeping-everyone-out-it-is-still-trolling-after-his-death_partner/) on July 30.
These tweets all reflect a profound misunderstanding of what “comorbidity” means, Dr. Alfred Sommer (https://www.jhsph.edu/faculty/directory/profile/658/alfred-sommer), an epidemiologist and dean emeritus at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, told Salon by email.
“People with co-morbidities die at higher rates, as do older people (some without serious co-morbidities but with aging, less responsive immune systems),” he wrote. “None of which makes any difference —if these people had not contracted COVID they would not have died at this time! So they are ALL COVID-caused deaths.”
Sommer believes the number of deaths attributed to the pandemic has actually been underestimated, as many who were ill — either with COVID-19 or something else — were unable to seek care because of the public health situation.
“Nobody counts the increase in the number of deaths caused by the pandemic — but not directly by infection: people who had heart attacks and related who couldn’t get care, or were afraid to seek care, because of COVID,” Sommer added. “The rate of these deaths has been running substantially higher this year than in past years.”
Dr. Eric Feigl-Ding (https://twitter.com/drericding?lang=en), senior fellow at the Federation of American Scientists, called the “6%” meme “a ludicrous misunderstanding and misinformation.” “Basically, [they are] arguing that if you die with COVID and have any risk factors, then it somehow doesn’t count as COVID,” he told Salon. Feigl-Ding compared the situation to that of cancer patients, who frequently have compounding conditions that increase their risk of dying of cancer.
“Most cancer patients have many other risk factors, which by their logic means a person didn’t die of cancer if someone has anything else,” he said.
Dr. Justin Lessler (https://www.jhsph.edu/faculty/directory/profile/2566/justin-lessler), an associate professor of epidemiology at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, also told Salon that the six percent figure needs to be viewed in an appropriate context.
“The ‘six percent’ figure represents those people with only COVID-19 on their death certificate. This will be very unusual,” Lessler explained by email. “First, COVID-19 causes many of the co-morbidities mentioned, which are respiratory conditions. So, having, for example, respiratory failure on your death certificate in addition to COVID-19 is not really having another cause of death, as your coronavirus infection almost certainly caused the respiratory failure. Second, many of the other co-morbidities, such as heart disease, are common in the US and increase your chances of dying from COVID-19, so may be contributing factors to death but not necessarily the root cause.”
He concluded, “The most important thing to remember, is that no matter what the co-morbidities listed are, pretty much all of these people would have lived longer, probably a lot longer, if they had not been infected with the virus.”
Dr. Georges Benjamin (https://apha.org/about-apha/executive-board-and-staff/apha-staff/georges-c-benjamin-md), executive director of the American Public Health Association (APHA) and former secretary of health in Maryland, confirmed to Salon by email that the six percent figure is being characterized “incorrectly.””The 6% figure was the percent that did not have any other diseases listed on the death certificate as a contributing factor for their death. That does not tell us what the risk to the U.S. population is,” Benjamin explained by email. “Approximately 40% of the U.S. population have at least one chronic disease (130 million people [out of] 330 million). That means 40% (130 million) of the country is at risk of getting severe disease if they get infected with SARS-CoV2 the virus that causes COVID-19. That is a significant risk to the overall population. COVID-19 was a contributing cause for the death and may have been the precipitating cause of death.”He added, “The way they are interpreting the 6% figure implies that the individual would have died from their underlying disease regardless of the SARS-CoV-2 infection, which you cannot say.”

Dark money posing as ‘independent’ women’s groups might have played a ‘pivotal role’ in Trump’s 2016 win: study
Written by Alex Henderson March 2, 2020
When a political group describes itself as “independent,” it’s important to ask if that group really is “independent” or if, in fact, it has partisan leanings. The Independent Women’s Voice (IWV) and the Independent Women’s Forum (IWF), which are sister organizations, both portray themselves as groups of free-thinking nonpartisan women. But David Armiak of the Center for Media and Democracy (CMD), in an article republished by Truthout on February 28, reports that according to Truth North Research (TNR), both organizations may have played a “pivotal role” in President Donald Trump’s victory in Wisconsin in 2016 as well as former Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s victory in the 2012 recall election.
Armiak explains, “IWV boasts that Trump would have received an estimated 215,840 fewer votes in Wisconsin if it had not executed itsquiz messaging campaigntargeting 1.54 million voters. However, much of that messaging was conducted by IWV’s affiliated 501(c)(3) partner, IWF, which is prohibited by federal law from participating or intervening in elections.”
Lisa Graves, executive director of TNR, asserts that IWV and IWF aren’t as “independent” as they claim to be. Graves told CMD, CRONON] “People in Wisconsin and elsewhere need to know about this right-wing group that uses its ‘independent’ brand name to pretend to be independentin order to sway women voters who are independent. I don’t think it would be prudent to underestimate the resolve or impact of the Independent Women’s Voice on elections.”
According to Graves, it is “troubling” that IWV is “funded largely by dark money sources.” Graves notes thatHeather Higgins, CEO of IWV and IWF, is a “touted strategist for the right wing and called the election for Trump when others were dismissing him, in part based on her assessment of independent and conservative women. I fully expect her groups to spend substantial sums deploying her quiz strategy in target states in 2020.”
The TNR report was authored by Graves and researcher Evan Vorpahl.
Armiak notes that IWV and IWF have received millions of dollars from right-wing groups, including DonorsTrust and Donors Capital Fund. And even though IWV and IWF claim to be “women’s organizations,” Graves’ research found that 89% of IWF’s funders are men.
The Center for Responsive Politics has noted that IWV President Tammy Bruce, in 2018, was “vociferous” in her defense of Justice Brett Kavanagh. After Kavanaugh was accused of attempted rape by Palo Alto University psychology professor Christine Blasey Ford, Bruce appeared on Fox News and asserted that he was “effectively being used as a stand-in for all perpetrators.”
