a few hundred feet below the landing site is a lake with a river flowing from it.

first camp set up in quiet corner of the lake, closest to the pod.

Pod lands in the morning allowing some time to explore a little, making their way down to the lake side, and able to set up camp in a flat less dense part of the forest along the lake side.
