Moos Field

Moos Field / Moos Park officially established 1965.

1931-03-17        The Cheney High school track teams used the Normal School field, baseball boys used the rodeo grounds while waiting for the grass to take hold on the new 2nd Street field (today known as Moos Park). Tennis was played at a court on the junior high grounds.

1957-Arbor Day - The Tilicum Club purchased five trees, which were planted along the edge of the field by the Boy Scouts and Campfire Girls, with assistance by the City.

In the spring of 1964 the Lion’s club, looking for a service project, undertook the development of the 1 1/2 blocks of rocky, weedy ground into a level grassy field. The project was financed by the many fund raising activities of the Lion’s club, including the annual calendar sales.

Mr. Earl Moos is the only active charter member of the Lion’s club, holding a record of 18 years of perfect attendance. In addition to this, “Mr. Lion” has served the Cheney school district for 20 years and is presently teaching at Betz elementary and acting as student counselor.

1965-10-13: City Ball Park - Play Ground Named After Earl Moos. The official naming of the Earl M. Moos city ball par and playground took place amid showers and gusty winds on 13 October 1965. In 1964 the Lions Club undertook to develop the 1 1/2 blocks of rocky, weedy ground into a level grassy field. The project was financed through numerous fund-raising activities, including the Lion's Club annual birthday calendar.

Mr. Moos is the only active charter member, at 18 years of perfect attendance, of the Lion's Club chapter. Mayor Nolan Brown and Mr. Pete Hagelin accepted the park on behalf of the city.

1965 - The Tilicum club distributed the new Cheney Chamber of Commerce brochures at 75 cents a copy and made over $100. Mrs. Grant and Mrs. Braaten headed the committee for distribution of the Chamber of Commerce welcome brochures. This project took over a year. The club used the funds to purchase trees for Moos Field.

1966 - On Arbor Day in April, 5 big trees, purchased with $75 of Tilicum club money, were planted at the baseball park (Moos Field) with participation of the City Council, Boy Scouts, Camp Fire Girls and other organizations. The Tilicum presented the trees to the city. They were purchased from Krause Nursery of Spokane and planted with assistance of Chet Johnson (Chet’s Flowers). This made over 20 trees the Tilicum Club has given and planted in the city since 1910.

In February of 1967 the Tilicum Club American Home department members staged a hat fashion show which raised $200 to provide restrooms at Moos Park and landscaping at Sutton and City parks. Attendance was good despite the very windy, rainy evening.

1967-Summer The Lion's Club constructs restrooms, and works to install a sprinkler system at Moos Park.

In 1967, the Tilicum purchased 5 trees to be planted by the City in the park. A planting ceremony dedication included the Mayor, Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce, Boy Scouts, Camp Fire Girls, and Tilicum Club members.

1976 - $100 from the Tilicum club Conservation Fund was given to the city to purchase trees for Moos Field.
