John Eugene Roos

Mr. John Eugene Roos, our baker, was born in Alsace, Germany; (now France) in 1859. His father was a superintendent of a large estate there for 25 years, and when he retired, received a pension from the owner of 500 francs for life.

Mr. Roos emigrated to the land of freedom and the home of the star spangled banner when he was only five years of age, leaving his parents behind. He was taken to St. Louis where he lived with his sisters for some time. When he became old enough he learned carriage trimming, and later went to Chicago where he learned the harness makers’ trade. Mr. Roos then attended the Northwestern college at Naperville, Illinois, for two years, and worked at farming in Illinois off and on for several years. He went back to St. Louis for a short time, and in 1885 went to Los Angeles where he worked for seven years in a bakery, and thoroughly mastered the trade.

Mr. Roos then opened up a bakery in Auburn, Washington where he continued for one year, before returning to Los Angeles , working for four years at his trade as a baker. In 1893, he married Miss Eugenie Georger. The couple moved to Cheney in 1899 and opened up the bakery where they are at present located.

Mr. Roos’ ability as a baker is too well known to comment upon. He always keeps on hand a large variety of pastries and as a bread maker he is unsurpassed. He also runs a lunch counter in connection with the bakery, and serves coffee and cold lunch at all hours.

Mr. Roos is a man who attends strictly to business and he is having good success in his line.
