1964-07-03: Tilicum Donates Clock to New Pool
By Mrs. A.B. [Lulu] Cutting
The big $300 outdoor clock at the new Cheney swimming pool is a gift of the Cheney Tilicum Club.
Although Cheney is located in an area of nine lakes in a radius of 12 miles, the community has long been mindful of the need of a good sanitary pool in town. Members of the Tilicum women's club led the movement among local organizations boosting the pool.
The club suggested a number of locations, worked for means to finance, get it on the city ballot, distributed leaflets, and transported voters to encourage the city council to promote and float bonds to build a pool.
When a block of land belonging to the Wynstra estate was bought by the city some years ago, prospects seemed brighter. Tilicum entered into campaigning by talks and saving funds for a gift to the pool. When the matter was voted down twice, a third time proved successful and work began. Underground springs hampering excavation were surmounted and the $150,000 pool opened in June after nearly two years of building. Success and popularity of the pool is overwhelming. The big clock is visible for some blocks away and swimmers can gauge their time and activities by it.
1965-06-18: The American Legion Post in Cheney purchased an American flag for the pool facility.
