Return to Integumentary System Menu
The integumentary system is the body's outermost layer. It's made up of skin, hair, nails, glands, and nerves. The integumentary system protects the body from environmental elements like bacteria and pollution. It also helps with:
- Retaining bodily fluids
- Eliminating waste
- Regulating body temperature
- Protecting from injury and sunlight
- Keeping the body in balance
The integumentary system is the body's largest organ. It works with other systems in the body to regulate essential processes.
Some parts of the integumentary system include:
- Sweat glands : Small, tubular structures in the skin that produce sweat for thermoregulation
- Hair: Protects the skin, increases sensory function, and helps regulate body temperature
- Reticular layer: The thicker, tougher part of the dermis that provides strength and elasticity to the skin
