Bankers Trust New York Names Sanford To Be President When Hannon Retires

The Wall Street Journal, June 17, 1982

New York - Bankers Trust New York Corp selectedCharles Sanford to become the president when John Hannon retires from the bank holding company at the end of this year.

Mr Sanford, 45 years old, is credited with making Bankers Trust more an investment bank than a commercial bank.   An executive vice-president since 1974, he has run its trading and money-market operations for 10 years.  Under his guidance, the bank’s traders have gained a strong reputation in the foreign-exchange and bond markets.

Mr Sanford’s rise is unusual in that it’s rare for an executive from the trading operation to reach the upper echelons of a bank.   Although Mr Sanford spent the first eight years of his banking career as a loan officer - part of the traditional route to the top - he’s made his name dealing with the free-wheeling money-market world.

Mr Sanford and Edward A Lesser,  a 48-year-old executive vice president also were both named directors of the company.

Three years ago, Bankers Trust changed its corporate strategy by deciding to sell its consumer banking business and to deal only with institutional and corporate customers.  The bank has increasingly emphasised trading, mergers and acquisitions, and advising corporations that issue commercial paper.

The company has also gained attention with its high-rolling traders, who have greatly contributed to profits.  In 1981, for example, foreign exchange and bond trading profits were nearly one-third of the company’s pre-tax income.  Mr Sanford is credited with the growth of these areas

Barclays Bank Unit Acquires Division of Bankers Trust

The Wall Street Journal, November 5, 1982

New York - Barclays Bank PLC’s Barclays Bank of New York unit said it completed its acquisition of Bankers Trust New York Corp’s Hudson Valley division.  Terms of the acquisition of the 25-branch unit weren’t disclosed.

Bankers Trust announced last December an agreement to sell the division to the British bank’s unit as part of its move out of retail banking.

Barclays had 64 branches in New York state before the latest acquisition.  About half those offices - in Queens, Nassau and Suffolk counties - were acquired from Bankers Trust in November 1980.

Before the latest purchase, Barclays had assets of $1.17 billion and deposits of $946 million.  Bankers Trust’s Hudson Valley division had assets of $335 million and deposits of $269 million, Barclays said.
