Vimalamitra

བི་མ་ / bi ma / Vima

This is short for Vimalamitra, the great Indian Dzogchen master. Sanskrit Vimala means “stainless,” “immaculate,” or “free from impurity,” and mitra means “friend.” So Vimalamitra has the lovely sense of “Stainless Friend” or “Immaculate Friend.” In this title, though, bi ma functions mainly as a proper-name abbreviation.
