Bindu
Bindu (Drops or Essences)
- Meaning & Role: Bindu (Tib. thig le, ཐིག་ལེ་) means “drop,” “point,” or “essence.” It represents the subtlest condensation of energy and consciousness within the channels. The bindu is the psycho-energetic correlate of bliss (ānanda) and clarity.
- Two Primary Bindus:
- White bindu at the crown — associated with compassion, the moon, and cooling energy.
- Red bindu at the navel or heart — associated with wisdom, the sun, and heating energy.
- Union & Result: When prāṇa is absorbed into the central channel, the bindus melt and descend and ascend simultaneously, producing the experience of mahāsukha—“great bliss inseparable from emptiness.” This union is the experiential expression of the Hevajra Tantra’s formula:
“By the union of bliss and emptiness, the yogin realizes the innate nature.”
