Sandwich
DETAILS/DESCRIPTION:
The sandwich was invented by the eighteenth-century John Montagu*, 4th earl of Sandwich, on an occasion when he gambled non-stop for twenty-four hours and ordered sliced meat and bread to be brought to the table so that eating would not interrupt the game.
Modern sandwiches consist of any type of suitable bread or roll, filled with any type of suitable food, hot or cold.
Sandwiches range in complexity from English-tea wafer-thin cucumber sandwiches to the multi-layer American club sandwich, usually filled with (at least) tomato, bacon, chicken and lettuce
ONELINER: The sandwich is sliced cheese or meat, placed on or between slices of bread
