Neil Armstrong
A TRAILBLAZER IN SPACE EXPLORATION
Sally Ride made history as the first American woman to venture into space. Born on May 26, 1951, in Los Angeles, California, Ride pursued a career in physics, earning a Ph.D. from Stanford University. Her journey to becoming an astronaut began when she responded to a NASA advertisement in the newspaper. In 1978, she was selected as part of NASA's first astronaut class to include women.
Space Shuttle
On June 18, 1983, Ride flew aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger on the STS-7 mission, breaking barriers and inspiring countless young women to pursue careers in science and engineering. Her contributions to the field extended beyond her historic flight. After retiring from NASA, Ride dedicated herself to education, founding Sally Ride Science in 2001 to encourage children, particularly girls, to study science.
Legacy
Sally Ride's legacy continues to inspire, reminding us of the importance of diversity and inclusion in the pursuit of knowledge and exploration.
