Attachments Dumped on Reader's Desktop (Again & Again)
= Update ☆ 02.13.29 =
This outstanding problem from TheBrain 10 and TheBrain 11 has occurred repeatedly in TheBrain 12. This means that almost 6 years after the launch of TheBrain's new platform, desktop/synced sharing is still buggy and unusable.
See status details below.
= Update ☆ February 2020 =
During the process of testing another critical sharing bug in TB11, Synced Changes in Shared Brains are Not Immediately Visible (jump), several primary and secondary notes (attached .md files) from a shared brain were suddenly and unexpectedly dumped onto my desktop while I was logged in as a Reader of shared brain (using a free brain account).
I was told by TheBrain Support this bug can occur for Readers of a shared brain when the brain owner deletes attachments from a shared brain.
Apparently this bug can also occur if a Pro brain user shares a brain with free user. In other words, some of the attachments from the shared brain may be automatically moved to the Reader's desktop since Readers with free accounts are (by default) not permitted to keep attachments in thought folders.
☆ Important Update & Warning * 02.11.20
- Two rounds of testing have confirmed that the majority of the dumped attachments have simply been copied out of the shared brain onto the Reader's desktop.
- However, a small percentage of these dumped attachments were actually moved out of the shared brain when they were dumped onto the Reader's desktop.
- This means that when the Reader next syncs this shared brain, there is a risk these attachments will also be deleted from the brain where they were originally attached
- Either way, these dumped attachments are a deal killer for any type of private/synced brain sharing.
Status
- 02.13.19: Submitted my initial bug report from TB10
- 01.25.20: Opened forum discussion on unresolved issues with shared/synced brains
- 01.26.20: Submitted my second bug report from TB11
- 01.28.20: Bug confirmed and under review
- 02.11.20: Second Test in TB11.0.51 with a Pro and Free account on my own computer > Results reported to Support
- 02.12.20: Third round of testing with another brain user. See results in Shared Brain Test Summary (parent)
- 02.14.20: "Unauthorized File Delete" message confirmed and under review
- Late February Update: -Recent fixes have been reported to resolve most of the synced access sharing bugs-. Will test again and update later on . . . .
- 12.01.20: Tested this sharing scenario again (from my Pro Account to my Free Account), and 7 attachments were again dumped on the free Reader's desktop.
- Fortunately, these attachments were all simply COPIED onto the Reader's desktop, rather than being DELETED from the original shared brain.
- Submitted my third bug report and output log from TB12
- 12.01.20: Receipt of bug report confirmed and forwarded to Engineering
- 12.30.20: Checked in with Support again to see if they had any news updates > Support said they could not replicate the issue
- 12.31.20: I asked Support to confirm they've tested this issue using a Pro brain shared with a Free account on the SAME computer, since that's when/where I'm seeing the dumped attachments
- Support confirmed they've tested using this and multiple/other scenarios
- I said I would test again with someone from TheBrain forum after migrating to Win10
- February 2021: I have since decided to move my new shared projects into Obsidian.
- 07.11.21: In my free account, I tried syncing this brain, and 2 more attachments were (again) dumped on my desktop: a screenshot and a secondary Markdown note. Fortunately, they were not deleted from within the brain itself. However, this means the desktop sync/sharing process is still unusable if attachments have been added into the brain
- 07.28.21: Chase did more testing on this sharing bug, but could not replicate the attachment dumping issue, so he requested video documentation to help with troubleshooting. I opened a new follow-up help desk ticket, and will submit video documentation -this weekend- later on .
