CPTED First Generation Principles
Key principles of First Generation CPTED:
- Natural Surveillance
- Designing spaces to maximize visibility, such as using open layouts, proper lighting, and strategically placed windows, to deter potential offenders
- Access Control
- Restricting access to certain areas through physical barriers like fences, gates, or controlled entry points, to reduce opportunities for unauthorized entry
- Territorial Reinforcement
- Creating a sense of ownership and responsibility for spaces through clear boundaries, landscaping, and signage, which signals that the area is cared for and monitored
- Maintenance
- Keeping spaces clean and well-maintained to convey that the area is actively used and monitored, discouraging vandalism and neglect
