4 Set Vulnerability border

• The line on the bottom right indicates a Danger zone
  • Change could happen quickly and easily
  • This is where impact matters

• Similar to setting the Counterfactual line, the Vulnerable line is then negotiated
  • Provide red string or ribbon to allow the line to be easily moved

• Then address the question: How might we stabilize or contain change here?
  • Risk is a Known Unknown
  • Risk resides in the Cynefin Complicated domain
    • Assess frequency and severity probabilities for identified dangers
      • If things in a constraint have no impact, then we can ignore it
      • If there are constraints with high impact, create a mitigation plan for each high impact constraint to prevent plunging from the Clear domain into the Chaotic domain

• This is a good time to discuss the treatment of Unknown Knowns
  • Untapped knowledge that resides in the Clear domain near the Chaotic boundary
  • Knowledge embedded in an individual’s skills and habits and not explicitly codified and widely shared
  • Surfacing untapped knowledge represents a huge opportunity for failure prevention
