U.S code Title 50 - War Powers Resolution Act
The War Powers Resolution (WPR) is a federal law that limits the president's ability to commit the United States to armed conflict without Congress's consent. The WPR was adopted in 1973 over President Richard Nixon's veto.
The WPR's requirements include:
- Consulting Congress: The president must consult with Congress before committing U.S. troops to hostilities abroad.
- Reporting to Congress: The president must notify Congress within 48 hours of deploying U.S. forces.
- Prohibiting armed forces: Armed forces cannot remain for more than 60 days.
The WPR's requirements are intended to reaffirm Congress's role in committing the United States to armed conflict. The Constitution divides war powers between Congress and the president.
The WPR is located in Title 50 of the United States Code, chapter 33.
