Selective Service / the Draft

Recruitment for the military has fallen dangerously low and the only way to bring up the numbers at this point is through a draft. Military veterans claim a draft is inevitable.

The United States has not had a military draft since 1973. The last draft was conducted on June 30, 1973. The U.S. military is now all-volunteer. However, all male U.S. citizens and immigrants between the ages of 18 and 25 should register with the Selective Service System. Registration is required by federal law. Men should register within 30 days of their 18th birthday.

The U.S. has used military drafts during times of crisis, such as the Civil War, World War I, and World War II. In the case of a national emergency, Congress and the president would have to authorize a draft. The Selective Service would then draft eligible young men.

There are no official plans to bring back conscription. However, those who are obligated to register with the Selective Service should stay up-to-date on any potential changes.
