Malaria mouse models
38835069 /24 Preclinical models of cerebral malaria are still over-reliant on a P. berghei (ANKA strain) infection in C57BL/6J adult mice, which is not an accurate model for P. falciparum infection. There is no validated animal model that can predict clinical efficacy in severe malaria, though the HuSICD mouse is useful for predicting parasite reduction kinetics. Human volunteer studies are therefore important to demonstrate the safety, tolerability, and the feasibility of drug administration by the intravenous and/or intramuscular route.
