Subject: Feature Regression in v.15: Unresolved Internal Link Styling & Impact on AI Cerebro / Duplicate Generation
Dear TheBrain Support Team,
I am writing to report a significant workflow regression in TheBrain version 15 regarding how internal notes links and broken/orphaned links are handled, which is actively cascading into severe data integrity issues and administrative overhead.
In theBrain app v.15 Win 11, when there is a broken internal link in the content/note it doesn't look any different than any other link, and when you click on the link, it still looks as good as any other valid link. Until you actually click on the link, that's when you get the surprise that the link is not valid.
Please see video: Broken Link is disceiving
The Core UI / Rendering Regression
In version 14, internal links that pointed to non-existent or renamed thoughts offered immediate visual feedback, Destination Thought Not Found allowing for proactive database cleanup. In version 15, the markdown note engine renders any string with valid link syntax using standard anchor styling, regardless of whether the destination thought actually exists.
Because the application defers database lookup until the moment of interaction, a broken internal link is completely indistinguishable from a valid one until it is clicked. When managing massive databases with tens of thousands of interconnected thoughts, this lack of real-time visual validation is a severe regression that breaks established curation workflows.
Downstream Impact on AI Cerebro & Data Integrity
This UI limitation is not just a visual inconvenience; it is actively causing data corruption and efficiency bottlenecks across my database:
- AI Cerebro Disconnection: When AI Cerebro interacts with or indexes these notes, it encounters these broken pathways and fails to locate existing thoughts. Because Cerebro hits a hard stop without receiving a clear warning or reason for why it cannot proceed, it creates additional duplicates or forces complex custom scripting to mitigate the failures.
- Current Manual Workaround: To prevent total data chaos requires constant manual "hand-holding," custom Ai Cerebro script mitigation, and heavy processing overhead just to keep the dataset clean. I have had to formulate a tedious manual workaround. When Cerebro fails due to an untraceable path, I attempt to create the thought link manually. When I try to attach the source URL to it, TheBrain's native duplicate-prevention mechanism finally catches it and alerts me that the URL already exists in another thought. I then have to navigate to the original thought, merge or correct it, and inform Cerebro that the issue is resolved so it can proceed.
- Spike in Duplicate Thoughts: Because broken internal links look entirely valid, navigating via notes frequently leads to the mistaken creation of duplicate thoughts when a target is assumed to be missing or orphaned. (well over 400 duplicates still in my database in two months and possibly double that because I have been deleting as they become aware to me).
Proposed Solution
- Could the development team please look into restoring real-time validation or distinct visual styling (such as a warning color, strikethrough, or muted state) for internal links whose target thoughts cannot be resolved?
- Additionally, providing better error propagation so that AI Cerebro understands why a path or thought cannot be located would drastically reduce this manual intervention loop.
- Finally, an built-in integrity check or audit tool within the v.15 environment to flag broken internal links in notes would ease the strain on local processing and data bloat.
Thank you for your time, your continuous development of v.15, and your help in resolving this.
Best regards,
