M365 Groups

An O365 Group is a combination of an Organizational Group, a Distribution List, a Shared Mailbox, a File Share and a Resource Hub.

  1. Organization Group It is a special type of Azure AD group. Native AD Users and Guest Users can be added as members. Roles, Permissions and Access can be applied to the group.
  2. Group Mailbox - All O365 Groups have a Group Email Address, and all members have access to the Group Inbox
  3. Distribution List The Group Mailbox can be set so all members will receive a copy of messages directly in their own mailbox.
  4. File Share The Group SharePoint site can be used by members to upload files to a common area. Files can even be shared from here to non-group members.
  5. Resource Hub A “Group Instance” of certain applications can be created and attached to the group for all members to use collaboratively.

O365 Groups always have 3 Components

Optional Group Apps such as a Team can also be added as group owned resources. These can be assigned to the group at the time of its creation or later on.
