Pleasure

Pleasure, Pluses and Minuses

Pleasure for its own sake—or pleasure at all costs, or convenience over inconvenience—is not a recipe for contentment, joy, or pursuit of happiness.

Pursuit of pleasure is a dangerous endeavor. There is no virtue in avoiding pleasure nor in seeking pleasure. One may be better off treating pleasure as a neutral or just a nice bonus, not as the one goal of all existence.

Pleasure itself is not inherently bad (asceticism) and should not be written off or avoided, if it is part of other healthy pursuits (hiking to enjoy the beauty of nature, eating and enjoying good food as part of an appropriate diet, sexual satisfaction in a healthy relationship, etc.)
