Freudian Psychoanalysis
I studied under several distinguished Freudian Psychoanalysts in my medical career. I believe Freud made some profound theories of the human mind, most notably his theories of defence mechanisms and transference. Patients feel as is the analysis is very important to them ans rapidly develop an addiction to it, whether o not actually obtaining any benefit from it. I have come to believe his ideas of the psychosexual stages of mental development are nonsense. His original ideas were that hysteria was caused by incest or child abuse and mainly affected women. Homosexuality was acceptable but seen as asserted development. At the time I was convinced of its approach.
My concerns are raised by :
- My own personal experience of the use of this technique
- The history of the development of psychoanalysis?
- Major concerns regarding the ethics of Anna Freud?
- It’s deeming of homosexuality as arrested development?
- Freud’s plagiarism of the ideas of dream interpretation and of the unconscious mind.
- The sheer cost of it. Some therapist charge by the hour. rates in London form 30 to 225 per hour. Daily rates go up to a lucrative 2700 pounds per day in London.
- The fact that many analysts are over defensive about it and attack all criticism
- The fact that it can be highly lucrative means of income.
- the fact that it is very intellectual and patients require a certain intelligence to absorb it.
- the lack of evidence based benefits and the potential harm of it.
- the sheer unfeasibility that foundational concepts of the Oedipus complex and psychosexual development are valid.
- There is no guarantee the therapist is good even if they charge a lot.
- Does the theory hold up to examination?
- Does it work?
- How expensive is it?
- Is it objectively is it really a good technique
- Can it be harmful.
- Why is it not offered o the NHS?
- Why did one of Anna Freud’s patient commit suicide in Anna’s home after a lifetime of psychotherapy?
- Is the psychoanalytic community a cult?
The answers might surprise you. You have been warned.
