</div><div>As part of his duties overseeing the task force in charges of dealing with the coronavirus pandemic, Vice President Mike Pence has been holding secret meetings with prominent right-wing “influencers” on how to spin Donald Trump’s administration’s efforts to contain the growing health crisis.</div><div>
</div><div>According to a report from the Daily Beast, the outreach began at the annual CPAC conference long before the administration had any idea what they were dealing with, the report notes.</div><div>
</div><div>“The direct outreach occurred on Thursday, Feb. 27—the day after Trump tapped Pence to lead the task force. There, the vice president hosted an informal briefing on COVID-19 and the administration’s latest efforts, with several right-leaning personalities with large followings on Twitter and other social media platforms, according to a source with direct knowledge of the gathering,” the Beast reports, adding, “The following Wednesday, Pence hosted another closed-door meeting with conservative ‘influencers,’ with this one lasting for roughly an hour in the vice president’s office on White House grounds.”</div><div>
</div><div>Among those Vice President Pence has been reaching out to are “Fox New fixture and prolific MAGA tweeter Dan Bongino; former Trump adviser and current “War Room: 2020” podcast host Jason Miller; Newsmax TV host and Trump’s former press secretary Sean Spicer; former White House official and Sinclair ‘must-run’ commentator Boris Epshteyn; Sinclair anchor and ex-Fox News host Eric Bolling; and former Rep. Jack Kingston (R-GA), a Trump surrogate.”</div><div>
</div><div>The report notes that the outreach illustrates that White House knows it has a public relations problem of epic proportions on its hands and needs all Trump-supporting hands on deck, who are being used to praise the president while at the same time lashing out the media for their coverage of the administration’s failures. </div><div>
</div><div>“For weeks the Trump administration’s coronavirus task force has struggled to maintain continuity in messaging, with different departments seemingly operating off of different scripts and with different ideas about how to disseminate information to the public. Part of that tension is internal, with a White House and a president having been desperate to calm the markets at a time when state governments are calling for help amid rising death tolls,” the report continued. “Through it all, the vice president’s office, and communications teams on the task force, have tried to minimize the noise, calm Americans, and relentlessly lauded the president’s response to the outbreak in the U.S. The efforts to loop in conservative influencers has been seen as a way to maneuver beyond the regular briefings to the White House press corps and reach a different and more sympathetic media cohort. “</div><div>
</div><div>Defending the meetings, Pence chief of staff Marc Short described their efforts by stating, “The vice president has said that he wants to get as much information out to the American people as possible… There are a lot of different channels of communication. It’s not just press briefings every day, it’s not just TV interviews… There’s a whole lot of different streams of information. And one of those is surrogates.”</div><div>

The views of the site’s director, Robert Spencer, on Islam led the British Home Office to ban him from entering the country in 2013.<p style="margin: 0px 0px 1em; font-size: small; background: rgb(255, 255, 255); padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-variant-numeric: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; position: relative; line-height: 1.4;">But its designation as a hate site hasn’t stopped tech companies — including PayPal, Amazon and Newsmax — from maintaining partnerships with Jihad Watch that help to sustain it financially. PayPal facilitates donations to the site. Newsmax — the online news network run by President Donald Trump’s close friend Chris Ruddy — pays Jihad Watch in return for users clicking on its headlines. Until recently, Amazon allowed Jihad Watch to participate in a program that promised a cut of any book sales that the site generated. All three companies have policies that say they don’t do business with hate groups.<p style="margin: 0px 0px 1em; font-size: small; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-variant-numeric: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; background: rgb(255, 255, 255); position: relative; line-height: 1.4;">Jihad Watch is one of many sites that monetize their extremist views through relationships with technology companies. ProPublica surveyed the most visited websites of groups designated as extremist by either the SPLC or the Anti-Defamation League. We found that more than half of them — 39 out of 69 — made money from ads, donations or other revenue streams facilitated by technology companies. At least 10 tech companies played a role directly or indirectly in supporting these sites.<p style="margin: 0px 0px 1em; font-size: small; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-variant-numeric: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; background: rgb(255, 255, 255); position: relative; line-height: 1.4;">Traditionally, tech companies have justified such relationships by contending that it’s not their role to censor the Internet or to discourage legitimate political expression. During just the last week, six of the sites on our list were shut down. Even the web services company Cloudflare, which had long defended its laissez-faire approach to political expression, finally <a href="https://www.propublica.org/article/service-provider-boots-hate-site-off-the-internet" style="text-decoration-line: none; font-weight: inherit; color: rgb(0, 51, 153); outline: none; background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; position: relative; line-height: 1;">ended its relationship</a> with the neo-Nazi site The Daily Stormer last week.<p style="margin: 0px 0px 1em; font-size: small; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-variant-numeric: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; background: rgb(255, 255, 255); position: relative; line-height: 1.4;">“I can’t recall a time where the tech industry was so in step in their response to hate on their platforms,” said Oren Segal, director of the ADL’s Center on Extremism. “Stopping financial support to hate sites seems like a win-win for everyone.”<p style="margin: 0px 0px 1em; font-size: small; background: rgb(255, 255, 255); padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-variant-numeric: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; position: relative; line-height: 1.4;">But ProPublica’s findings indicate that some tech companies with anti-hate policies may have failed to establish the monitoring processes needed to weed out hate sites.PayPal, the payment processor, has a policy against working with sites that use its service for “<a href="https://www.paypal.com/us/webapps/mpp/ua/acceptableuse-full" style="text-decoration-line: none; font-weight: inherit; color: rgb(0, 51, 153); outline: none; background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; position: relative; line-height: 1;">the promotion of hate, violence, [or] racial intolerance</a>.” Yet it was by far the top tech provider to the hate sites with donation links on 23 sites, or about one-third of those surveyed by ProPublica. In response to ProPublica’s inquiries, PayPal spokesman Justin Higgs said in a statement that the company “strives to conscientiously assess activity and review accounts reported to us.”<p style="margin: 0px 0px 1em; font-size: small; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-variant-numeric: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; background: rgb(255, 255, 255); position: relative; line-height: 1.4;">After Charlottesville, PayPal stopped accepting payments or donations for several high-profile white nationalist groups that participated in the march.It posted a <a href="https://www.paypal.com/stories/us/paypals-aup-remaining-vigilant-on-hate-violence-intolerance" style="text-decoration-line: none; font-weight: inherit; color: rgb(0, 51, 153); outline: none; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; background: transparent; position: relative; line-height: 1;">statement</a> that it would remain “vigilant on hate, violence & intolerance.” It addresses each case individually, and “strives to navigate the balance between freedom of expression” and the “limiting and closing” of hate sites, it said.<p style="margin: 0px 0px 1em; font-size: small; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-variant-numeric: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; background: rgb(255, 255, 255); position: relative; line-height: 1.4;">After being contacted by ProPublica, Newsmax said it was unaware that the three sites that it had relationships with were considered hateful. “We will review the content of these sites and make any necessary changes after that review,” said Andy Brown, chief operating officer of Newsmax.<p style="margin: 0px 0px 1em; font-size: small; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-variant-numeric: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; background: rgb(255, 255, 255); position: relative; line-height: 1.4;">Amazon spokeswoman Angie Newman said the company had previously removed Jihad Watch and three other sites identified by ProPublica from its program sharing revenue for book sales, which is called Amazon Associates. For the surface of planet Earth, 2015 was the hottest year on record by a stunning margin. But already, 2016 is on track to beat it.

Last month was the hottest January in 137 years of record keeping, according to data released Wednesday by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. It's the ninth consecutive month to set a new record.

To be sure, some of the recent extremes are the result of a monster El Niño weather pattern that still lingers in the Pacific Ocean. But the broader trend is clear: We live in a world that's warming rapidly, with no end in sight. Since 1980, the world has set a new annual temperature record roughly every three years. Fifteen of the hottest 16 years ever measured are in the 21st century. 

The chart below shows earth's warming climate, measured from land and sea dating back to 1880. If the rest of 2016 is as hot as January, it would shatter the records set in 2014 and 2015.

Results from the world’s top monitoring agencies vary slightly, but NASA, NOAA, and the Japan Meteorological Agency all agree that January was unprecedented.

The El Niño weather pattern that started last year produced some of the hottest temperatures ever witnessed across great swaths of the equatorial Pacific. By some measures, this may now be considered the most extreme El Niño on record. It has triggered powerful typhoons, spoiled harvests in Africa, and contributed to vast fires in Indonesia. In California, residents are bracing for more floods over the coming months.

The heat in January was experienced differently around the world. The map below shows a few purple spots of cooler-than- average temperatures and plenty of record-breaking red. The blob of crimson in the Pacific Ocean is the footprint of El Niño. Some of the most unusual warmth swept the Arctic, where ice levels fell to the lowest on record for this time of year.

While El Niño conditions appear to have peaked, they may continue to a lesser extent through late spring or early summer, according to the U.S. Climate Prediction Center. Then it's pretty much a coin toss whether the Pacific returns to more neutral temperatures or even a cooler La Niña pattern.

The heat that's dispersed into the atmosphere during an El Niño can linger, which means there's a decent chance 2016 will turn out to be the third straight year to set a new temperature record. That's never happened before.

A new NASA study found that there has been a net increase in land ice in Antarctica in recent years, despite a decline in some parts of the continent. Conservative commentator and filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza also had some thoughts this week. That is almost never a good thing. When thoughts rattle around D’Souza’s feverish brain, weird connections get made, and then D’Souza is apt to voice those thoughts and connections, which are uniformly nutso. This week, D’Souza thought he saw a connection between ISIS fighters and Ferguson protestors. This is certifiably insane. We’re hoping we don’t have to explain why. Here is what he said on NewsMaxTV’s Steve Malzberg’s show:

In starting NewsMax Media, Christopher Ruddy took the The Drudge Report as a model and aimed at creating an Internet news company by building a team of reporters instead of working alone.

Besides the website and magazine NewsMax.com also sends out a newsletter on a frequent basis to subscribers. These newsletters are The Blaylock Report, a medical publication <a href="http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=NewsMax.com#cite_note-2" title="">[3]</a>, and the Financial Intelligence Report, a financial publication <a href="http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=NewsMax.com#cite_note-3" title="">[4]</a>.

<h2>Article suggesting a coup against President Obama</h2>

On September 29, 2009, NewsMax ran an article by John L. Perry titled Obama Risks a Domestic Military Intervention that suggested a military coup to "resolve the Obama problem." Perry also wrote that a coup, while not "ideal," may be preferable to "Obama's radical ideal, and would "restore and defend the Constitution." Newsmax has since removed the column from its Website, but the entire text of the article has been preserved elsewhere on the Web.<a href="http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=NewsMax.com#cite_note-4" title="">[5]</a><a href="http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=NewsMax.com#cite_note-5" title="">[6]</a>

<h2>Echo chamber</h2>

There is ample evidence to support the theory that NewsMax is one of a growing number of right-wing "news" sources and blogs that act as an <a href="http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Echo_chamber" title="Echo chamber">echo chamber</a> for the conservative viewpoint.

A classic example of this is a December 4, 2007 article by conservative author and activist <a href="http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Kenneth_R._Timmerman" title="Kenneth R. Timmerman">Kenneth R. Timmerman</a>. Responding to a National Intelligence Estimate report stating Iran had halted its nuclear bomb program in 2003, Timmerman attacks the study by smearing its authors.<a href="http://www.newsmax.com/timmerman/iran_nukes/2007/12/04/54359.html" class="external autonumber" title="http://www.newsmax.com/timmerman/iran_nukes/2007/12/04/54359.html" rel="nofollow">[3]</a> Timmerman's piece has few verifiable facts. Most of his "sources" are "unnamed."It is, however full of innuendo and opinion.(In the piece Timmerman quotes one of his own books six times.)<a href="http://shop.newsmax.com/shop/index.cfm?page=products&productid=553" class="external autonumber" title="http://shop.newsmax.com/shop/index.cfm?page=products&productid=553" rel="nofollow">[4]</a> The <a href="http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Echo_chamber" title="Echo chamber">echo chamber</a> effect is apparent when a quick Google search for news on the NIE study produces hundreds of right wing sites that quote the Timmerman article's conclusions as fact.<a href="http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&q=December+2007+news+kenneth+Brill&btnG=Search" class="external autonumber" title="http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&q=December+2007+news+kenneth+Brill&btnG=Search" rel="nofollow">[5]</a>

The weekend before the 2004 presidential election, NewsMax purchased airtime on local TV stations across the country to air <a href="http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Stolen_Honor:_Wounds_That_Never_Heal" title="Stolen Honor: Wounds That Never Heal">Stolen Honor: Wounds That Never Heal</a>, a film critical of Democratic presidential candidate <a href="http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=John_Kerry" title="John Kerry" class="mw-redirect">John Kerry</a>.<a href="http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=NewsMax.com#cite_note-6" title="">[7]</a>

On May 26, 2000, NewsMax published an article claiming <a href="http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Hillary_Clinton" title="Hillary Clinton" class="mw-redirect">Hillary Clinton</a> refused to meet with the Gold Star Mothers, a group of mothers of servicemen.<a href="http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=NewsMax.com#cite_note-7" title="">[8]</a> According to the Gold Star Mothers organization, this was false and "Senator Clinton greeted us graciously on Gold Star Mothers Sunday, 2005." This story was also debunked at other websites<a href="http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=NewsMax.com#cite_note-8" title="">[9]</a>.]

A 2005 NewsMax report about Sen. <a href="http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Rick_Santorum" title="Rick Santorum">Rick Santorum</a> of Pennsylvania, claiming he was "teaming up" with rock band U2 for a fund-raiser, gained considerable attention. Santorum had actually purchased 66 tickets to a sold-out show and was reselling these to campaign supporters at $1,000 per seat. The band issued a statement denying it was involved in the practice, saying, "U2 concerts are categorically not fund-raisers for any politician; they are rock concerts for U2 fans."<a href="http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=NewsMax.com#cite_note-9" title="">[10]</a> Rather than admitting the error and issuing a correction, NewsMax simply changed its article about the fund-raiser without telling readers it had been changed, stating that the story was misinterpreted.<a href="http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=NewsMax.com#cite_note-10" title="">[11]</a>

Besides the website and magazine NewsMax.com also sends out a newsletter on a frequent basis to subscribers. On September 29, 2009, NewsMax ran an article by John L. Perry titled Obama Risks a Domestic Military Intervention that suggested a military coup to "resolve the Obama problem." Perry also wrote that a coup, while not "ideal," may be preferable to "Obama's radical ideal, and would "restore and defend the Constitution." On May 26, 2000, NewsMax published an article claiming <a href="http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Hillary_Clinton" title="Hillary Clinton" class="mw-redirect">Hillary Clinton</a> refused to meet with the Gold Star Mothers, a group of mothers of servicemen.<a href="http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=NewsMax#cite_note-7" title="">[8]</a> According to the Gold Star Mothers organization, this was false and "Senator Clinton greeted us graciously on Gold Star Mothers Sunday, 2005." This story was also debunked at other websites<a href="http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=NewsMax#cite_note-8" title="">[9]</a>.

A 2005 NewsMax report about Sen. <a href="http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Rick_Santorum" title="Rick Santorum">Rick Santorum</a> of Pennsylvania, claiming he was "teaming up" with rock band U2 for a fund-raiser, gained considerable attention. Santorum had actually purchased 66 tickets to a sold-out show and was reselling these to campaign supporters at $1,000 per seat. The band issued a statement denying it was involved in the practice, saying, "U2 concerts are categorically not fund-raisers for any politician; they are rock concerts for U2 fans."<a href="http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=NewsMax#cite_note-9" title="">[10]</a> Rather than admitting the error and issuing a correction, NewsMax simply changed its article about the fund-raiser without telling readers it had been changed, stating that the story was misinterpreted.<a href="http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=NewsMax#cite_note-10" title="">[11]</a>

Newsmax magazine and newsmax.com website are owned by Newsmax Media Inc., which is a privately held company.  I finally found an old SEC registration statement from February 2002 when they were proposing an IPO of one million common shares @ $7/share to raise additional working capital.  They withdrew the registration in 2003, so one supposes that they found the working capital privately.  You can read over the registration statement at: <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.secinfo.com/dsVsf.31Xk.htm">http://www.secinfo.com/dsVsf.31Xk.htm</a>.  It's easier to give you the highlights, though.

<li>Christopher Ruddy (director, CEO, President) owns 32.6% of the common stock.  He's the guy who started the company, the CEO and President, and is also a leading contributor to the website and magazine.  He's a journalist who formerly worked for the New York Post as an investigative journalist, and is a special national correspondent for the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.</li>

</li><li>Michael Ruff (director) owns 25% of the common stock.  He is the owner of the Icarus Investments Ltd, a venture capital company, and was formerly the president of the Dallas real estate development company Lennox Properties.  He was also on the board of directors of Texas Central Bank and Citadel Technology.</li>

</li><li>Richard Mellon Scaife (not a director) owns 7.2% of the common stock.  This may be the most interesting name on the list....Scaife is the heir to his mother's vast Mellon family fortune, and is the publisher of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.  He is a well-known supporter of any number of conservative causes, and was in some hot water in the 1972 presidential elections for contributing almost $1 million to Richard Nixon's re-election.  He was also one of the moving forces behind the Arkansas Project, which pushed the notion that a White House aide was killed to cover up some aspect of the Whitewater investigations (the more commonly accepted version is that he committed suicide), maintained that the CIA was used by the Clintons to run drug smuggling operations and which eventually pushed the Monica Lewinsky story into the Clinton impeachment trial.  He's the popular media choice for the villain behind Hillary Clinton's remarks about a right-wing conspiracy.</li>

Newsmax says it has 300,000 subscribers to the magazines, and it is one of the most visited news sites on the internet.  It's strong right-wing slant is obvious and intended.  Rush Limbaugh is a contributing editor, and has had Chris Ruddy on his popular talk radio show many times, as have Michael Reagan, Mike Savage, Neal Boortz and Sean Hannity.  All are contributors/editors for the magazine and website, as are a number of other distinguished conservative pundits including Arnaud de Borchgrave (The Spike), Alexander Haig, Ronald Kessler and Richard Poe.

NewsMax makes about 8% of its revenues from selling branded and "conservative-themed" merchandise.  There's quite a collection--everything from a Mount Rushmore framed lithograph to an audio tape "Pray and Be Rich," to a NYPD t-shirt to a Winston Churchill coffee mug.  The company also partners with Random House to issue a series of co-branded books, all on neo-conservative themes.  The line of books includes titles such as How to Raise an American, The Greatest Speeches of Ronald Reagan, How to Pay Zero Taxes and the best of all--If Democrats Had Any Brains, They'd Be Republicans.

At the same time, you might want to look at some other articles about Newsmax, which is regularly taken to task for misleading reporting, failure to retract errors and other journalistic no-no's.  A few I found particularly interesting were:

<h1>Is NewsMax Corrupt?</h1>

<h3>Using the standards NewsMax itself applies to the New York Times, absolutely.</h3>

For an organization whose journalistic values hover pretty close to those of its Florida <a href="http://conwebwatch.tripod.com/stories/2001/contab.html">tabloid neighbors</a>, NewsMax sure does get all hot and bothered about the journalistic standards of others.

An <a href="http://www.newsmax.com/showinside.shtml?a=2002/8/20/161652">Aug. 20 article</a> takes the New York Times to task for allegedly distorting comments by Henry Kissinger to make it appear he is against the apparently imminent war against Iraq. It's actually a compilation of three other articles on the subject: columns by Russ "Mugger" Smith in the New York Press and syndicated columnist Charles Krauthammer and an editorial in the Washington Times. It starts with a quote from Smith that "It's only a slight stretch to state definitively that the New York Times is a corrupt institution" and goes from there in the direction you'd expect.

The Washington Times excerpt touches on its accusing the New York Times of "willful misrepresentation" and "intellectual slovenliness." NewsMax then summarizes: "Noting that the New York Times is the pre-eminent newspaper in America (and probably the world), the Washington Times said that it has 'a singular responsibility to get its stories right.'"

The WashTimes criticism, of course, rings rather hollow in the wake of its own intellectual slovenliness with its <a href="http://216.239.33.100/search?q=cache:GbQWaWdug0wJ:www.washtimes.com/national/20020819-34549100.htm">willful misrepresentation</a> of the National Education Association's suggested lesson plans for teaching about the events of Sept. 11 (which the <a href="http://www.dailyhowler.com/dh082602.shtml">Daily Howler</a> and <a href="http://www.spinsanity.org/columns/20020905.html">Spinsanity</a> have dissected). Then again, no one's accusing the Washington Times of being the pre-eminent newspaper in America, let alone Washington, so any "responsibility to get its stories right" is apparently not a high priority to folks like Times employees and NewsMax editors. (And, wouldn't you know it, Laura Ingraham <a href="http://www.newsmax.com/archives/articles/2002/8/20/130642.shtml">parrots the WashTimes line</a> in her Aug. 20 NewsMax commentary.)

The NewsMax article concludes by saying "it's no stretch at all" to call the New York Times corrupt. Which begs the question: If distortion of another's views is all it takes to be a "corrupt institution," what does that make NewsMax?

So corrupt it's the poster boy for a journalistic RICO statute.

Proof? Let's take a quick tour of the ConWebWatch archives:

<li>It distorts reality by running <a href="http://conwebwatch.tripod.com/stories/2000/goodnews.html">only negative news</a> about its political enemies and <a href="http://conwebwatch.tripod.com/stories/2001/larryk.html">avoiding bad news</a> about its political friends.</li>

<li>it spent a lot of time <a href="http://conwebwatch.tripod.com/stories/2000/plagmax.html">misrepresenting</a> Judicial Watch press releases as NewsMax stories.</li>

<li>NewsMax CEO Christopher Ruddy presented <a href="http://conwebwatch.tripod.com/stories/2000/ruddyhillary.html">tabloid rumors as fact</a> in stating the Clintons were selling their house in New York. Today, long after the story can be calling nothing but false, it <a href="http://www.newsmax.com/archives/articles/2000/12/18/143812.shtml">remains on NewsMax</a>, and it has never published a correction or apology. (Even the New York Times issued a <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2002/09/04/pageoneplus/corrections.html">clarification</a> of its Kissinger article. When was the last time you saw NewsMax correct anything?)</li>

<li>NewsMax tried to distort reality even more than usual immediately after the Sept. 11 attacks by ham-handedly <a href="http://conwebwatch.tripod.com/stories/2001/treason.html">denouncing</a> anything that could be remotely construed as criticism of President Bush with terms starting with "anti-Americanism" and going all the way to "treason."</li>

NewsMax's use of willful misrepresentation (that phrase is getting a workout here, isn't it?) continues as we speak in its distortion of remarks made by Bill Clinton to plug its latest <a href="http://www.newsmaxstore.com/nms/showdetl.cfm?&DID=6&ObjectGroup_ID=1&Product_ID=876&CatID=1">anti-Clinton book</a>. One recent headline promoting the book on NewsMax's front page declared, "Clinton Blamed America, Christians for 9-11." He, of course, did no such thing; he <a href="http://conwebwatch.tripod.com/stories/2001/attacking.html">cited</a> unpleasant events in American history such as slavery and the taking of land from Native Americans as an example of the long history of terror even as he expressed his support to President Bush's antiterror refforts. Even the Wall Street Journal <a href="http://www.opinionjournal.com/best/?id=95001446">defended Clinton</a> on this, sort of. NewsMax would rather sell books than tell the truth.

NewsMax is so <a href="http://conwebwatch.tripod.com/stories/2002/nmdistort.html">consumed by its biases and distortions</a> that it no longer sees them for they are, if indeed it ever did. An example of this is a Sept. 3 <a href="http://www.newsmax.com/archives/articles/2002/9/2/225858.shtml">column by Ruddy</a> in which he notes that "A left-wing magazine recently made some snide remarks about NewsMax, noting that we are the heirs to the ideological legacy of Ronald Reagan." (What, Ruddy is suddenly offended by snide remarks?) The commentary to which Ruddy refers <a href="http://www.prospect.org/webfeatures/2002/02/nyhan-b-02-21.html">appeared in February</a> in the American Prospect, and Ruddy distorts it horribly. That commentary, by Brendan Nyhan, never declared NewsMax "heirs to the ideological legacy of Ronald Reagan"; it cites NewsMax as proof that "the right's cynical exploitation of Ronald Reagan's legacy has always been something of a race to the bottom" and adding that "it's certainly questionable that (Reagan) would endorse NewsMax ... as the key to his legacy."

Then there's the occasional actual legal question involved, as with its recent <a href="http://conwebwatch.tripod.com/stories/2002/nmcorrupt.html">overenthusiastic promotion</a> of the re-election of New Hampshire Sen. Bob Smith. NewsMax toned it down considerably in recent days (not that ConWebWatch is taking credit...), but the "intellectual slovenliness" it employs in the service of its ideology is apparently too inbred to be stopped.

The lead of a Sept. 1 story <a href="http://www.newsmax.com/showinside.shtml?a=2002/9/1/213414">gushes</a> that "The latest statewide poll in New Hampshire shows U.S. Sen. Bob Smith in a virtual tie against challenger Congressman John Sununu." That's the last we hear of that poll in the story, the rest of which is dedicated to describing Smith's latest ad campaign. The poll statistics nor the poll's conductor are never mentioned.

Wherever it was conducted, it wasn't in a New Hampshire that exists in this particular universe, if <a href="http://www.thewmurchannel.com/news/1649657/detail.html">another poll</a> is any indication. This one, conducted in conjunction with New Hampshire's top TV station, puts Sununu a whopping 22 points ahead of Smith.

NewsMax is journalistically corrupt, all right -- but in an incompetent, <a href="http://www.gambinofamily.com/john_gotti_jr.htm">John Gotti Jr.</a> kind of way.
