ROB ASTORINO (HOST): Dr. Michael Savage joins us now. Don't you feel sorry for this guy?

MICHAEL SAVAGE (GUEST): Well, I actually do. I don't agree with any of your positions on this.

ASTORINO: OK.

SAVAGE: I know you're not going to want to hear it.

ASTORINO: No. Go, go.

SAVAGE: I happen to know that ICE is not going after the worst of the worst, they're afraid of the gangbangers. I know it because I live in San Francisco. I know the streets very well. I'm not sitting in an ivory tower. They're going after innocent people like her. Here's a guy who voted for Trump, who's saying he'll never vote for him again and the answer here, I'm afraid, is true. Why are they picking up women who present no threat to the society? OK, you could argue she broke the law because she's here illegally, that is a valid point, but is she a threat to our society? If so, how?

The true threats to our society are the heavily armed gang members who are not being touched by ICE, because they might get shot. So what the ICE members, in my opinion are doing, and I'm a hardcore conservative, borders, language, culture. Anyone can quote me on this. What ICE is doing is going after the low hanging fruit that poses no threat to them, just as cops for years have always given tickets to soccer moms, rather than those who may be dangerous. I know I've just alienated everyone in the audience who loves police and loves ICE, but it doesn't mean I'm wrong. The fact is this is why Trump's popularity is falling, and I may not agree with many of these things, but it's undeniable that Trump's popularity is falling.

Newsmax's Michael Savage: “Criminalize the Democrat Socialist Party and deport them now before you lose your freedom and your life”

Written by Media Matters Staff

From the July 12, 2026, edition of Newsmax's Savage Nation

MICHAEL SAVAGE (HOST): The smirking con man from Uganda had the audacity to sit behind George Washington's desk in New York City the other day, basically declaring a revolution on America, surrounded by no Americans.

...

None of them were citizens. These were all invaders. I'm going to tell you a story today about a little man just like this smirking bastard in New York City named Pol Pot, who was the leader of the Khmer Rouge, the Red Brigades, the Red Scarves in Kampuchea from 1975 to 1979. His reign of terror ended in one of the most brutal genocides of the twentieth century, during which an estimated 1.5 to 2 million Cambodians, one quarter of the population was killed or died in work camps. That's exactly what Mamdani and the Democratic Socialists will do to you. Criminalize the Democrat Democrat Socialist Party and deport them now before you lose your freedom and your life. Now I've been fighting to cure our country of this disease called liberalism for over thirty years, but I haven't fought alone.

Right-wing media’s heinous rhetoric against people experiencing homelessness

From calling for homeless people to be sent to “internment camps” to fantasizing about making them “fight like gladiators,” right-wing media’s crusade against people without housing continues

Written by Sage Hodil

Published 04/03/26

Right-wing media have a long history of attacking homeless people, and so far 2026 has seen a continuation of that trend. Pundits have called for sending homeless people to different countries, “internment camps,” and institutions. Right-wing media figures have also pushed dehumanizing rhetoric by referring to homeless people as “bums,” “blighty,” “junkies,” “mentally deranged,” and even joking about their deaths.

September 14, 2025, edition of Newsmax's Savage Nation with Michael Savage

MICHAEL SAVAGE (HOST): The Kennedy is doing a fairly good job, but he doesn't have the — to run the Department of Human — what is he running? This — he never should have been given that job. Never. It was a huge mistake on the part of Donald Trump. Kennedy is way over his head. He's not a scientist. He has no training in science. And you're just doing push ups doesn't make you a health expert, by the way. Just because you have great muscles at 47 or 55 doesn't mean that you know everything about science that is required to be known to run HHS, which is a huge and huge. You know, when it came — when Trump came along, to get political for a second — and he appointed Kennedy to HHS, and Kennedy said that we're going to fire everybody in the building, I went on the air and I said to you, that's the biggest mistake he could ever make.

...

Not all scientists are political operatives. There are some really great scientists in the NIH. You can't throw them all out just because you don't like the politics of some of the people who ran HHS, like those involved in the National Institute of Health, like Fauci. You can't say all scientists are propagandists and they should all be fired. He made a huge error because he didn't have the scope necessary to run the HHS. It was way beyond his abilities, his knowledge. He had no knowledge. He has no degree in science. How can he run HHS? How can the man run HHS if he's never done basic science, never done one experiment? Did he ever work in a laboratory or even knows what laboratory science is? No. So you say everyone in laboratory science is a Doctor Frankenstein. Fire them all. Stupid. This is the problem with revolutionaries and revolutions. You know, you shoot everybody in a fascist dictatorship who opposes you. And in a non-fascist dictatorship, but a dictatorship of the mind, you fire everybody who you think is your enemy. Huge mistake.

MICHAEL SAVAGE (HOST): I also want to talk today about the bombing, the most successful bombing of — the most successful bombing mission in history, which was immediately debunked by the vermin at CNN, which to me is sedition. I looked up what sedition is.

If it was up to me and I was president, I'd rip them out by the hair and I'd arrest them for what they did. Right after the most successful bombing campaign of our life with the B-2 bombers, took out the nuclear facilities in Iran, they leak a fake report. The bombs did nothing. You hear this? Do you have any idea what the force and power is of these bombs that were dropped? Each bomb? Do you know what the TNT level is? What it does? One bomb went into the Earth, burrowed a hole. The other one went into the tunnel that was dug by the first bomb and exploded. And they're saying it had no effect on Iran's nuclear capacities.

Look, I studied what sedition is. If it was up to me, I would arrest the — excuse me, the ownership of CNN for letting this go out on the air. They've undermined America in a time of war against radical Islamic terrorists who would kill all of us.

ROB SCHMITT (HOST): I mean, let's just say what this what they really are. I mean, this is the Marxist group. These are the communists in Congress. And I mean, that's why Bernie's there. And sure, hating the Jews right now is the fashionable thing in this group. But this -- what they believe is so much more vile and dangerous than that. And they're spreading that rapidly and they get so much attention from the media because the media is so stupid. They love having these people on, and it's all of them. It's the Rashida Tlaib and it's the Ilhan and it's the Cori Bush, and it's all of these -- I mean, they're insufferable people. They're very unintelligent and they're beloved by the media that just thinks it's so sexy to be communist in a capitalist country.

MICHAEL SAVAGE (GUEST): Well, Bernie Sanders is the head of the snake of that organization. We all know that. He's the one who trained these puppets to speak the way they speak. They are naked and absolute Bolsheviks. If you want to call them communists, Bolshevik, it doesn't really matter. If they had the power, they would put you and me in a reeducation camp or execute us. That's who these Bolsheviks are. But the worst of them all is Bernie Sanders.

I have been on to him since he came along. Bernie Sanders brainwashed these people. Bernie Sanders looks like a benign Jewish grandfather in a crumpled suit with a tuna fish stain on his lapel from riding the subway and not having enough money to buy a hot dog on a cart. But this man is a vile, evil American of the worst kind, Bernie Sanders. We shouldn't lose the focus on who is behind these people. It's Bernie Sanders. He's worthy of our attention and our contempt. But he certainly is not up for reelection. He is a man who espouses hatred for capitalism and owns three or four houses that we know of. His wife bankrupted a college in Vermont and then walked off with a big amount of money.

These are gangsters. These are classic Bolshevik gangsters, very much like their boss in the White House, who you very clearly spoke about so succinctly in two segments ago. So, we're dealing with criminals who are also Bolsheviks, and they're very dangerous. So we can celebrate. Yes, Bowman is gone. The ghetto thug is gone. He's probably going to have a great career on MSNBC tomorrow. They probably -- the paper was probably waiting for him. I don't think he'll be hired by by Newsmax. I suspect he's not going to be a competitor for this slot.

right-wing conspiracist Michael Savage honored fallen veterans on Memorial Day by calling President Joe Biden a "terrorist" and railing against social progress during an angry interview on Monday's edition of Newsmax's Eric Bolling: The Balance.

Guest anchor Caril Higbie introduced Savage, who after thanking Higbie for being a Navy Seal launched into a diatribe against tolerance in the United States Armed Forces LGBTQIA+ rights, and theAmericans for Civil Liberties Union, which he proclaimed is "destroying" civilization.

Savage:

Your outrage is correct, but it's so deep. It's hard for people to understand that it's not about woke this, woke that. These are suicidal individuals who are trying to make the rest of us commit suicide along with them. And let me remind all of you out there who are listening - Rome did not pass away — I'm a student of history — Rome was assassinated from within and by the invasion of the barbarians. Those two elements are occurring in America today. And for Memorial Day, I've studied what they have done to the military. We all know — Carl, this will strike a chord with you — we all know the recruitment goals are in the toilet. Why would a young man enlist in the military other than to prove himself, to prove he's tougher than the other guy, that he can beat the other guy, that could beat the enemy, that he wants to protect America, he wants to protect our women and children. That's what a man goes into the military for.

Well, now let's look at what's going on, Carl. Fitness standards. After finding that women were not scoring as highly as men and under tremendous pressure from advocacy groups, the Army has thrown out all fitness tests. And so, now any soldier can meet any fitness requirement for combat specialties without a test. Number two. January 2021, the terrorist Biden signs an executive order, opens military service to all transgender individuals. We hear that's a good thing because all the transgenders, as you well know, are the best warriors on the battlefield. And then it gets worse. Biden decrees that active members of the military can take time off from their duties to get free sex change surgeries, Carl, and all related expensive hormones, Carl, and all expensive drugs, Carl, at our expense. That's what they went in the military, for free sex change surgery.

Carl, you've got time for a few more or do you want to get sick or you want to stay healthy today?

READ MORE: 'Homophobia always will be' a key part of 'MAGA populism': journalist

Higbie:

Oh, keep going, keep going.

Savage:

I'll give you two more. Alright, I did some research for you. The Biden administration, which is a terrorist administration tearing the country apart, ends its support for long-standing signed policies prohibiting individuals who are HIV-positive from serving in combat zones. That was based on sound science. It was tied to the need for HIV medications, which are very costly, and the danger of cross-infection through shared blood in a foxhole. Thrown out the door. Gets worse. The Biden's chief of naval operations,so-called Admiral Michael Gilday — I don't know who the hell he is — decided to add a book how to be an antichrist, one of the leading source books on so-called critical race theory, which is an anti-white hatefest. And, in the book given to our naval men and women now, are reading saying, 'capitalism is, essentially, racist and that to be truly anti-racist, you also have to be fully anti-capitalist.'

One more piece of information for those of you out there who want to know why I say Rome did not pass away, it was assassinated, and we are committing suicide because of the LGBTQ and other far-left maniacs. They're looking at readings that are required at West Point right now. There are now slides labeled 'white power' at West Point, Carl. Can you believe this? Now, if this goes on, I predicted twenty years ago in a not-so-joking way, like a Jonathan Swift, that if we don't stop these psychopathic haters, they will snap the crosses off the graves of our war memorials. How far away are we from someone saying,'all those crosses make me uncomfortable, and I want them snapped off the graves of dead soldiers.' Who's gonna stop them, Carl?

Higbie:

Me. I'll stop them, Mike. And that's the issue. You've got a lot of people just like me.

Savage:

I'll stop them. Know this, Carl. I've had enough. I've had enough. I'm an old man. But I'll tell you something, I'm willing to pick up arms. I can't take it anymore. I can't take this anymore!

Higbie:

Well, I, I, I see your frustration. I mean, look, you want to mess with, with the headstones of Arlington National Cemetery, we're gonna have a big problem, But on that, it's like all these people, they do this stuff in schools.Oh, we're going to trans your kids without yourself — what, just hear me out, Michael. What happens if I just started going, or we started going around as conservatives — baptizing people in elementary school without parental consent? The libs would lose their mind.

READ MORE: Iowa GOP Governor passes bill 'loosening child labor laws' after banning LGBTQ+ books from schools

Savage:

Why not do it? You know, the real problem here are the lawyers. Let's not forget it's the lawyers, the lawyers, the lawyers. Shakespeare had it right. But it's the ACLU. People don't understand. I've been onto these people for twenty-five years. Theanti-Christian libertines union are run by the most — the sickest people with law degrees imaginable, and they're rolling in big money. The ACLU is the head of the snake, as I declared the year 2002. It's the ACLU that stands behind all of this insanity and any administration that comes along that has the power should arrest all of them and try them for sedition and deport them if possible. Those are big words. I'm nothing but a podcast host, but I have a way of putting things in concrete form. It's the ACLU that's the head of the snake that's destroying America. It's the lawyers, the lawyers, the lawyers. They're killing the country. I could go on and on and on. As you know, I don't want to write a book here as a guest — fill in guy here — but Carl, it's Memorial Day. I look at those graves and I know I wouldn't be here if it were not for them. I wouldn't be here if it were not for them.

Higbie — a forty-year-old Millennial — then concluded the conversation:

Unfortunately, Michael, we have an entire generation that just is not appreciative of a lot of the things that are going on.

As the nation approaches the one-year anniversary of the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, a disturbing trend has emerged in the right-wing media ecosystem: the open approval and valorization of the event.

Such thoughts first emerged that very day, when far-right commentators like former Trump adviser Sebastian Gorka and right-wing site the Gateway Pundit cheered on the “patriots” who had “taken over Capitol Hill.” But after the coup attempt failed, right-wing media proceeded in the following days and months to come up with other explanations of what had happened. While they painted various conspiracy theories of left-wing infiltration or claimed there had been no insurrection at all, they also urged strongly against any attempts to investigate the event further — which did not exactly demonstrate much confidence in the alternative hypotheses.

But more and more, conservative media outlets are collectively ending up right back where they started, with a full embrace of the event, consistent with former President Donald Trump’s claims that “the insurrection took place on November 3rd,” and that January 6 was a “protest of the rigged election.” (This has also spread through official Republican circles, such as the local Republican Party in suburban Cobb County, Georgia, which is preparing to hold a “Candlelight Vigil for J6 Patriots.”)

This right-wing media campaign to excuse the Capitol attack is seemingly reflected by views among the rank-and-file GOP: A recent CBS News/YouGov poll finds that Republican voters have become less disapproving of the events of January 6 than they once were. While the vast majority still say they disapprove, a deeper look finds that this opinion has become spread between those who “strongly disapprove” and a plurality who only “somewhat disapprove.” Moreover, only 21% of Republicans will describe the riot as an “insurrection,” while 47% describe the people who entered the Capitol as having been motivated by “patriotism,” and 56% say they had been “defending freedom.” Moreover, 38% of Republicans say that political violence could be justified over election results.

Indeed, much of the response to January 6 has depended on the source’s view about whether such an event could succeed — or only result in ignominious defeat. Far-right activist and talk show host Charlie Kirk, in the days following January 6, deleted a tweet in which he had boasted that his organizations were sending “80+ buses full of patriots” to Washington in order to “fight for this president.” A Turning Point Action spokesperson claimed that the organization had sent only seven buses, but it also later emerged that at least one suspect in the Capitol insurrection had traveled to D.C. on one of Turning Point Action’s buses.

It is also worth looking at what Kirk now has to say about political violence. When an audience member at one of Kirk’s events asked this past October, “How many elections are they going to steal before we kill these people?” Kirk responded that the questioner was “playing into all their plans,” because their opponents were “trying to make you do something that will be violent that will justify a takeover of your freedoms and liberties.”(Others pointed out that Kirk’s supposed objection to violence was based on its high probability of failure instead of any moral qualms.)

Fox News host Tucker Carlson, who has created a propaganda series claiming that the attack was a false flag operation mounted by government elements in order to persecute conservatives, has also for long time cultivated a parallel narrative in which the insurrectionists were just regular citizens who “talked about the Constitution, and something called their rights.” Moreover, Carlson has claimed, they “were correct” that the 2020 presidential election had been rigged against Trump — and “if a mass of people show up angry at the Capitol, you should at least pause for a second,” and “maybe we should address their concerns."  [vid]

CARLSON (HOST): What was January 6? Well, there was destruction of property, which we’re totally opposed to, but what motivated it? Why were all those people there?

Well, for the most part, a year later, it’s very clear, January 6 was essentially what it appeared to be. Thousands of ordinary American citizens, voters — people who believe in our democracy far more fervently than Liz Cheney ever has — came to Washington because they sincerely believed democracy had been thwarted.

They believed the presidential election was unfair, and they have a right to believe that and by the way, in many ways, they were correct. The presidential election was unfair and you don't have to get into anything about voting machines to believe that.

…

OK, if someone broke the law, punish that person. That applies to BLM activists as much as it does to QAnon people. We're for enforcing the law, fairly, equitably. But we also think that as you do that, if a mass of people show up angry at the Capitol, you should at least pause for a second if you believe in democracy and ask, what are they angry about? Maybe we should address their concerns.

And on New Year’s Eve, right-wing site American Greatness— whose contributors have spread lies about the 2020 election and attacked Capitol Police officers — upped the ante with a piece titled “Of Reichstags and Bastilles.” Repeating a series of false claims that there was “overwhelming evidence of widespread voter fraud in multiple swing states,” contributor Eric Lendrum declared that “thus, the protesters were justified.”

The piece also claimed that Ashli Babbitt, the QAnon conspiracy theorist who was killed by a Capitol Police officer as she attempted to climb through a broken window leading to the Speaker’s Lobby, was “an actual hero … who was willing to give her life for her country—and ultimately did just that, albeit in a far more tragic way.” (Babbitt had posted online the day before the Capitol attack that “Nothing will stop us,” further adding: “They can try and try and try but the storm is here and it is descending upon DC in less than 24 hours… dark to light!”)

Lendrum concluded his piece with a declaration that conservatives should “stop trying to qualify their stances on January 6 with an obligatory disavowal,” and instead openly celebrate the actions of that day as “a reaction to a long train of abuses and usurpations perpetrated against the American people by an entrenched elite class that has infected our institutions.”

The only course of action at this point is to be just as firm in our stance as the Left is. If they truly want to address January 6 by making dramatic historical comparisons, then so should we. If their aim is to make January 6 their Reichstag Fire, then we should go forward celebrating the events of that day as our Storming of the Bastille; a day where a symbol of the degeneration of our ruling class into total corruption and tyranny was challenged, and the elites were shown just what happens when millions of freedom-loving citizens finally grow sick and tired of a boot perpetually stomping on their necks.

Another peculiar set of visuals and commentary came Monday night on the far-right One America News.

OAN host Natalie Harp interviewed right-wing author Lee Smith about how the events of January 6 had supposedly been used to defame Trump supporters in general, with Harp calling the date a “plot against the people.” (This phrasing was in contrast to a book that Smith published in 2019, The Plot Against the President, denouncing the Trump-Russia investigations.)

While OAN aired B-roll photos and video of the January 6 attack itself,Smith claimed that the investigations were “effectively the demonization and in some cases the criminalization of opposition” to the Obama and Biden “faction” in American politics. “It’s despicable, but that's what we're up against. We're up against a very, a very ugly faction of the American public sphere."

at [vid] the end of the segment, Harp returned to the subject of the 2020 election itself as a supposed grievance that led to the Capitol attack: “But again, they want to talk January 6 — they don't want to talk November 3. I wish the Republican Party and even the conservative media would’ve spent a week talking about November 3 on the anniversary of that.”

And in an appearance Tuesday morning on Newsmax, far-right commentator Michael Savage praised a new wave of conservative activism, such as contentious appearances at school board meetings, as “mini January 6 rebellions.”

In short, the imagery of that day is no longer something to be shied away from — but to be held up as a banner going forward.

As the longest sustained period of racial justice protests in American history segues into the heat of election season, dark shadows have appeared, from the vigilante killing of protesters in Kenosha, Wisconsin — and widespread conservative defenses of the teenage accused murderer — to ludicrous charges against protesters, including "terrorism," to the Trump administration's crackdown on federal antiracism training, calling it "anti-American," and Attorney General Bill Barr's call for protesters to be charged with sedition.

So much for the notions that Donald Trump has no ideology, or, for that matter, that getting rid of him will make America great again. In July of 2016, I wrote about why such views were myopic: "Trump advances core paleoconservative positions," researcher Bruce Wilson told me, including "rebuilding infrastructure, protective tariffs, securing borders and stopping immigration, neutralizing designated internal enemies and isolationism."

Trump's record as president has been surprisingly consistent for such an erratic figure, with his purely rhetorical support for infrastructure as the most notable exception. And therein lies a key to the current moment:With infrastructure removed from the equation — the most broadly popular position Trump's ever embraced — the remaining white nationalism stands out in stark relief, highlighted in the frenzied push toward violent confrontation around the election, and beyond.

Dr. James Scaminaci III has just published a report about the long historical genesis of this recent push for Political Research Associates, "Battle With Bullets: Advancing a Vision of Civil War." Scaminaci has a PhD in sociology from Stanford and has worked as a civilian intelligence analyst with expertise on the former Soviet Union, the former Yugoslavia, and organized crime. So the spread of social chaos, internecine violence and associated enabling ideologies is a subject he's familiar with.

Scaminaci traces the roots of culture-war and race-war narratives as far back as the Haitian revolution of the early 19th century. He observes that Steve Bannon nurtured those carefully at Breitbart News and they have played a key role in radicalizing Trump's base over the past five years, to the point where some of his supporters are visibly preparing themselves for violence. Some parts of this story have been relatively well covered, but Scaminaci provides a much more integrated and historically extensive account of how we reached our present state. I reached out to him recently for an interview by email to discuss some of his key insights and how they provide us with a much clearer picture of the forces pushing America toward civil war. The following has been lightly edited for clarity and length.

In your article, you write: "Over the last several years, a narrative around the threat of civil war — and more specifically, a racial civil war — has been growing on the Right." You observe that this comes in different versions and has deep historical roots, dating back to the colonial era. Before getting into the details, why is it important to recognize this history and learn about it?

I wanted to convey that what we are seeing now on the right wing has a long history, a history that is either overlooked or ignored. Jill Lepore and other scholars looking at the right have noted that modern day "patriots" cast themselves as lineal descendants of the founding fathers and the American Revolution — that they are revolutionaries against the existing "tyrannical" federal government. But that history is drenched in violence and blood against Black and indigenous peoples. That context cannot be omitted. And the idea that whites are under existential threat from Black folks also needs to be put into historical context.

Second, the right-wing idea that the federal government is "tyrannical" is largely the product of white supremacist politicians, both Republican and Democratic, and intellectuals like William F. Buckley. This was the idea that post-World War II federal support for civil rights was federal overreach, was unconstitutional, and that it upset allegedly harmonious race relations in the South and eventually in the North.

According to white supremacists, the existential threat to white people in the Jim Crow South came from Black folks, whether children or adults, even touching anything that could be shared with whites. A schoolbook touched by a Black child became a Black textbook. Blacks and whites could not share drinking fountains or sit in the same seats on a bus.

What I wanted to portray in "Battle With Bullets" is that whites have long viewed any expression of nonviolent Black agency as an existential threat to themselves that required whites to resort to a brutal, genocidal racial civil war. One can understand the palpable fear of a slave revolt before 1861. But white supremacists have claimed that registering to vote, voting, moving into a white neighborhood after a history of redlining, moving into managerial or foreman positions in the workplace, or being cast as heroes or superheroes are existential threats.

You write that "The most dangerous versions of that [civil war] narrative come from leaders with paramilitary forces, while other appeals seem intended to generate a heightened sense of crisis." Can you give an example of each and then help us understand how the two are related?

Roger Stone is a political operative who has graduated from ratfucking political operations into calling for a civil war or violence or martial law. He is an ideological chaos agent. He can help set the narrative mood for the right wing. As Chip Berlet has written, elites know how to write the score for scripted violence. Somehow, the gunmen always know who to kill. In a similar category are the numerous Christian right leaders who broadcast the same civil war message to their Christian nationalist supporters and followers. I also quoted [Dallas megachurch pastor] Robert Jeffress in the article.

David Neiwert owns the beat on tracking the transmission of fringe ideas to the conservative mainstream. Even a decade before Trump, the ideological lines were blurring.

In 2008,Michael Savage, a right-wing radio host, said, "[T]he white person is being erased from America's future. ... There is a racial element to the immigration invasion." Then Fox News commentator Bill O'Reilly claimed, "So now, it's becoming a race war."The Center for American Progress went on to note that O'Reilly claimed that immigration reformers "hate America ... because it's run primarily by white, Christian men" and were seeking "to change the complexion...of America."

That is no different from Jean Raspail's theme in "The Camp of the Saints" or the narrative at The Social Contract, a white nationalist journal which published Raspail's novel. Or Glenn Beck on Fox News in February 2009, airing his racial civil war scenario within one month of the first Black president taking office. Or a variety of Christian Right leaders during the Obama years calling for or suggesting a racial civil war is coming, includingTony Perkins, Larry Klayman and Rick Joyner.

In 2006, the Southern Poverty Law Center noted the "symbiotic dance" between white supremacist groups and John Tanton's hardline anti-immigration movement, as well as the sharing of conspiracy narratives between white supremacists and the "patriot" militia movement.

The conservative movement, both the political and religious wings, transmit sanitized versions of white supremacist ideology. The latter is premised on preparing for, if not instigating, a racial civil war in America.

John Jackson, a scholar who covers "scientific" racism, in a recent article titled, "Going Full Nazi,"asked the question: "[W]hat is the point of drawing a line between the 'mainstream' and the 'alt' right? Perhaps there is no useful distinction to be made." The angry white guys with guns are dangerous because they have weapons of war. But the dividing line between them and the "Fourth Generation Warfare" chaos agents creating a crisis of legitimacy is increasingly blurred.

You write that this rhetoric is rooted in a narrative adapted from the1973 French novel you just mentioned, "The Camp of the Saints." Can you explain its basic narrative?

The novel has seven key ideas that its critics and proponents have noted. One, mass migration is an invasion. Two, immigrants and refugees are invaders. Three, the invaders will eventually destroy Western culture and replace Western populations. Four, the West's political elites do not have the moral strength to defend the West. Five, the invaders must be physically removed and/or violently repelled. Six, there is a difference between the "real country" and "real citizens" and the "legal country" and "legal citizens." Seven, multiracial, multiethnic or multi-confessional societies are not only unstable but undesirable, and lead to the "balkanization" of societies — a view also imported from Serbian genocidal propaganda into the American and global right.

The main variations within this "Camp of the Saints" worldview are whether the political elites lack moral strength to resist the invasions ("Great Replacement"), enact immoral policies which weaken Western societies to invasion ("demographic winter") or actively collaborate with the governments of the invading migrants to facilitate the invasion (as in John Tanton's network). The other variation distinguishes the neo-Nazis from all the other segments: whether or not the Jews are responsible for the destruction of their societies ("white genocide").

You note that for both France and the United States, the historical roots of this narrative go back to the Haitian Revolution of 1791-1804. In the U.S. this has produced the "white genocide theory" and in France the "great replacement" theory. What distinguishes them and what draws them together?

The "white genocide" theory is premised on the fear of a Black slave revolt against the white slave-owning society. The "great replacement" theory is based on the fear of massive nonwhite immigration coupled with lower white birth rates leading to a "replacement" of the white population with a nonwhite population, and the transformation of the culture.

White supremacists use the more palatable, more sanitized "great replacement" theory interchangeably and conflate them. But they have different causal mechanisms.

On the other hand, the neo-Nazis and other proponents of the "white genocide" narrative consider any action by Black people to improve themselves, to gain access to privileged white spheres of social action or to more equitably redistribute power and status as an existential threat. "Great replacement" proponents do not share this outlook. Nor do "great replacement" proponents, in general, blame Jews for what they consider to be massive immigration.

You write, "It would be a mistake to see these various 'White Replacement' narratives as isolated from mainstream conservative thought in Europe or America." How has their influence spread through terrorist acts?

In the right-wing information sphere, ideas swirl around, mix, recombine and mutate over time to fit changing circumstances. Raspail's "Camp of the Saints" is foundational to this narrative or worldview. Raspail directly influenced the emergence and popularity of the "great replacement" theory, which is the catchall theory cited by white terrorists.

But Bat Ye'or's conception of the problem — that European elites conspire with Arab elites to produce both subservience to Islam and the "great replacement" — directly influenced the Norwegian terrorist Anders Breivik, who was motivated to provoke a decades-long civil war to stop the formation of what Ye'or called "Eurabia." Breivik, as well as the "great replacement" narrative, have inspired numerous white terrorist acts around the globe.

Returning to the American context, How did Steve Bannon and Breitbart spread their influence?

Bannon's principal contribution was to use Breitbart News to mix white supremacist ideology into the Republican Party and the Christian Right, and to heavily promote Raspail's "Camp of the Saints." In 2015 and 2016, Breitbart was the largest driver of ideological influence on the right.

How has this spread through the Trump administration?

The "Camp of the Saints" worldview largely shapes Stephen Miller's approach to immigration issues. Raspail's bottom line was that "the barbarians had to be repelled" either by violence or cruelty or both. Trump's immigration policy has been cruel, and as Adam Serwer noted, "cruelty is the point."

You also call attention to the Christian right's specific variant called "demographic winter," and argue that this has played a central role in evangelical support for Trump and his wall. What should people know about that?

The term "demographic winter" appears to have come from Don Feder, communications director of the World Congress of Families [a far-right, anti-LGBT Christian group]. He is the most prominent WCF official linked to the Tanton anti-immigration network and was apparently influenced by Bat Ye'or's "Eurabia" ideas, which circulate widely in conservative and right-wing Jewish circles.

In November 2005, Feder's view of Muslims in France reflected the worldview of Raspail and other "Eurabia" writers. Feder blamed the French riots of that year on "demographic winter," "lax immigration policies" and "brain-dead multiculturalism." Where "demographic winter" differs from Raspail, the "great replacement" and the Eurabia narratives is that liberal elite support for women's reproductive freedom and gay marriage are the principal culprits, in addition to massive Muslim immigration.

What resonates with conservative Christians and Christian nationalists is the idea that Christian (Western) civilization is under threat from nonwhite immigration, Christians are being persecuted in the West and around the world, and only a strong, authoritarian leader building a wall can save them.

Survey data supports my contention that white evangelical Protestants have a "Camp of the Saints" worldview: Seventy-eight percent favor strict limits on "legal immigration," 76% favor "building a [border] wall," 69% support a "temporary" Muslim ban and, 54% favor "preventing refugees from coming into the United States," according to October 2019 PRRI data.

The last section of your article deals with the emergence of the "Boogaloo boys"during the pandemic and the Black Lives Matter protests. How can we better understand them in terms of the longer history you've laid out? What lessons need to be learned?

The first lesson to be learned is that Donald Trump and local elected Republican officials, especially the so-called "constitutional sheriffs," have a much closer relationship to the armed wing of the Christian right. Bruce Wilson and David Neiwert have been tracking that.

The second lesson is that Trump is openly orchestrating armed demonstrations of force against Democratic Party governors and mayors.

The third lesson is that it is very easy to take off your camouflage fatigues and put on a Hawaiian shirt and pretend you just got concerned — but not before you spent around $2,000 on a rifle, tactical gear and ammunition. Journalists should stop being so credulous.

The last lesson is that claims that the "patriot" militia support Black Lives Matter protests are preposterous. The BLM protests are not simply about wrongful deaths at the hands of law enforcement — something a majority of whites can see and empathize with.

BLM is calling for reckoning, a "Third Reconstruction" of America — politically, economically and culturally — in the context of a deliberate confrontation with that racist, violent history. Even at the intellectual level of the "Never Trumpers," those potentially most sympathetic to BLM, there is a blindness or an inability to confront that larger American history and the smaller Republican Party history regarding racism. To think that "angry white men with guns" have thought it through is absurd.

What's the most important question I haven't asked? And what's the answer?

I do not know the answer to the question: "Why do scholars and journalists not consider the religious basis of America's long-term crisis of legitimacy in terms of politics and science?" But I would suggest that scholars and journalists have glommed on to the least important of Richard Hofstadter's explanations, "The Paranoid Style in American Politics," and ignored his more trenchant analysis in "Anti-Intellectualism in American Life," which focuses on the epistemological disruption caused by fundamentalist Protestantism. They also ignore Marty Lipset's and Earl Raab's use of the concept of monism in describing the right wing in "The Politics of Unreason." Those old guys were on to something.

National talk radio hosts reject calls for masks, echoed by local hosts in at least one coronavirus hot spot

07/02/20 3:04 PM EDT

Conservative talk radio hosts across the country are mocking the use of masks to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, even in states like Arizona where cases are surging.

Masks are an essential tool in the effort to limit the spread of COVID-19. Infected people are less likely to transmit the virus to others when wearing a mask, and while no mask can completely prevent inhalation of virus particles, even cloth masks provide some protection for healthy individuals. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention continues to recommend that Americans wear cloth face masks when interacting with people outside of their households.

Despite clear evidence demonstrating significant public health benefits, some in right-wing media have sought to undermine public support for mask wearing. On Fox, host Laura Ingraham has questioned the science behind masks, and fellow prime-time host Tucker Carlson has attacked public health officials and elected representatives over their mask guidance. Meanwhile, anti-mask posts on Facebook — many posted by right-wing media figures like Tomi Lahren — are racking up millions of interactions from users.

Conservative talk radio is no different. While some hosts have spoken positively about the potential benefits of masks, others have questioned their value and decried the supposed message wearing masks conveys. For instance, host Rush Limbaugh has previously referred to masks as “a required symbol on the left to promote fear.”

Now as cases are surging in a number of states, some local officials in places like Arizona have implemented mandatory-mask orders to help slow the spread. Yet these orders are being met with resistance from local radio hosts who have declared they will not be complying and have provided a platform for disgruntled callers and medical misinformation. The local focus of these hosts, combined with messaging from some nationally syndicated programs, threatens to undermine public support for mask wearing when it’s needed most.

Nationally syndicated hosts have mocked masks as a sign of “submission” and questioned their effectiveness

In Arizona, local hosts rejected mask orders designed to slow surging case numbers

Arizona has seen one of the worst surges in coronavirus case numbers in the country in the past month. On June 17, Gov. Doug Ducey finally allowed local officials to implement mandatory-mask orders after weeks of resistance. Cities like Phoenix passed these orders almost immediately, much to the dismay of some local radio hosts.

Trump’s most fanatical right-wing followers are going ballistic over impeachment — and talking of ‘civil war’

Written by David Neiwert / Daily Kos December 27, 2019

The most fanatical right-wing followers of Donald Trump have been warning for some time that any attempt to impeach the man in the Oval Office would result in a second American civil war that will produce large amounts of bloodshed as they rise up with their weapons caches and begin murdering liberals.

Now that he actually has been impeached, they’re going even more ballistic.

“He’s not gonna be removed. He’s not gonna be removed. He’s not gonna be removed,” one attendee at Trump rally told a CBS reporter. When the reporter asked, “Do you feel confident in that?” he responded, “My .357 Magnum is comfortable with that. End of story.”

Rep. Louie Gohmert—who has talked up civil war on several previous occasions—went ballistic on the floor of the House last week, warning that impeachment meant the end of America: “This is a travesty. We’re in big trouble,” Gohmert huffed, adding, “Now it’s lowered even further, the bar. [Impeachment] will be used for political battles and this country’s end is now in sight. I hope I don’t live to see it. This is an outrage.”

Louisiana Congressman Clay Higgins was even more unhinged in his similar rant last week: “They fear the true will of we the people. They are deep established D.C. They fear, they call this Republican map flyover country. They call us deplorables. They fear our faith, they fear our strength, they fear our unity, they fear our vote, and they fear our president. We will never surrender our nation to career establishment D.C. politicians and bureaucrats. Our republic shall survive this threat from within. American patriots shall prevail.”

The real action, however, has been on social media, where Facebook and Twitter posts eagerly anticipating the violent uprising to preserve Trump’s presidency have been as common as dirt.

Ex-Navy SEAL Jonathan Gilliam, for instance, used Gohmert’s comments as a springboard on Twitterfor open discussion of a shooting civil war in which conservatives begin killing liberals for attempting to remove Trump: “Like so many, I see exactly what he sees. Therefor [sic] it is time we begin considering the possibility of civil war.”

“I am counting down the days until the vigilantes take to the streets. I dread the inevitable conflict that is coming but will do whatever I can I can to support the fight against the Left,” one commenter replied. Another answered: “lol it would be a short Civil War II.  The vast majority of the peace officers, military personnel, and gritty hard-working 2nd Amendment loving Americans are on our side.  The snowflakes have no idea about the sleeping bear they are about to awaken.”

[pix ReneHollan.PNG]

A fairly typical response among far-right extremists has been to pledge utter fealty to Trump, even unto death. Rene Hollan, a Monroe, Wash., man who is a regular participant in events organized by Patriot Prayer and the Proud Boys in the Pacific Northwest, posted a screed (later removed by Facebook) vowing that he would even detonate a nuclear bomb in a major liberal city:

As a naturalized U.S. citizen who swore the Oath of Allegiance, if President Trump orders me to drive a truck with a nuke into a city with Facebook offices or an illegal sanctuary city, and detonate it, killing myself, everyone in the city, and rendering it a sheet of glass, it would be my honor to comply.

Another Northwest far-right figure, “documentarian” Brandon Farley—long a player in the Portland-area “patriot” scene—invited neo-Nazis to start killing his critics: “Hey Atomwaffen, will you please take note of this and act accordingly?” he tweeted.

Farley3.png

A couple of days later, Farley discovered that his name came up in Twitter searches for Atomwaffen, and expressed his confusion.

Social scientist Caroline Orr collected a large cache of these kinds of comments on Twitter, noting, “It’s easy to laugh at the keyboard warriors in the mix, but there are definitely extremists using this opportunity to try to bring about social and political upheaval by issuing calls for violence.”

“Lock N Load, PATRIOTS, the demonratsjust told us what they want for Christmas: #CivilWar2,” wrote one. “Let’s make the demon rats live on the streets of their own districts!”

“ALERT!! If the Democrats impeach OUR PRESIDENT WE NEED TO HAVE A CIVIL WAR,” tweeted another. “America as we have known it will be gone and the squad will be in charge of us. I shiver thinking of it. A civil war will be the only way to get America back as we remember it.”

Of course, it’s always worth remembering that this talking point has been deliberately promoted by Russian intelligence agenciesas part of their campaign to undermine American democracy. A Justice Department affidavit released in 2018 noted that the “civil war” meme is being directly encouraged by Internet Research Agency, the Russian-financed disinformation agency that purchased 3,500 ads on Facebook during the 2016 campaign with the intent of undermining American political consensus. The affidavit describes directions given to IRA’s writers.

Forcefully support Michael Savage’s point of view with competence and honesty. Savage made it clear that any attempt to remove Trump is a direct path to a civil war in the United States. Name those who oppose the president and those who impede his efforts to implement his pre-election promises. Focus on the fact that the Anti-Trump Republicans: a) drag their feet with regard to financing the construction of theborder wall; b) are not lowering taxes; c) slander Trump and harm his reputation (bring up McCain); d) do not want to cancel Obamacare; e) are not in a hurry to adopt laws that oppose the refugees coming from Middle Eastern countriesentering this country. Summarize that in case Republicans will not stop acting as traitors, they will bring upon themselves forces of civil retribution during the 2018 elections.

Over at Trump-friendly Russia Today, op-ed writer Robert Bridge bolstered the civil war talk with a piece headlined “Democrats’ push to impeach Trump is just the latest chapter of US Civil War 2.0,” in which he concluded, “What is happening now in Washington DC between the Republicans and Democrats is just mere dress rehearsal for far more disasters down the road. I just hope the costumes don’t end up being blue and gray, once again.”

February 7, Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) introduced a Green New Deal resolution. The resolution outlines what they plan to include in formal legislation down the line.

Over the following five days, primetime cable news coverage of the Green New Deal was dominated by Fox News. Fox News aired a total of 34 segments on the resolution, more than three times the combined total of MSNBC (8 segments) and CNN (3 segments).

Obviously, the Fox News coverage of the legislation was terrible. Many segments did not even mention climate change.

This is not the only example of cable news discussion of a policy issue being dominated by the right. In the weeks leading up to the State of the Union, Fox News aired nearly seven hours of coverage of state abortion measures, while CNN and MSNBC covered the same stories for less than 15 minutes combined.

Fox News dominating policy discussions of progressive initiatives has real consequences: They are immediately caricatured, with outright lies getting a massive head start. A large number of people get their first impressions through this distorted coverage, including many in the media.

When one of these issues does eventually jump to mainstream media, myths and lies often make the jump alongside. At minimum, the mainstream debate is partially about debunking the lies that have already happened.

Sunday shows fail again: America is in desperate need of an adult conversation about how to address climate change. Instead of that, the Sunday shows talked about climate change and the Green New Deal only through the narrow lens of the political horse race. Maybe we can prioritize fending off a massive destabilizing rise in sea level instead of worrying about whose poll numbers go up or down as a result of endorsing a resolution.

Meanwhile: Right-wing media are somehow worse than useless on the Green New Deal, as they've repeatedly invoked murderous dictators to complain about the initiative. Michael Savage, who has partied with Trump at Mar-a-Lago, even said of Ocasio-Cortez, "“This is a Stalinist in a skirt; this is a Hitler in high heels.”

...After Republican Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana was shot by James Hodgkinson in a domestic terrorist attack on June 14, 2017, far-right AM talk radio host Michael Savage blamed MSNBC for the attack—which, of course, MSNBC vehemently condemned—and made the idiotic claim that the left was uniquely violent. But only two months later, on August 12, 2017, a Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia quickly turned violent—and 32-year-old activist Heather Heyer was killed in an act of vehicular homicide. One of the rally’s organizers, white supremacist Jason Kessler, applauded the killing, describing Heyer as a “fat, disgusting communist” and the attack as “payback time.”

Critical sense and intellectual detachment have never been Horowitz's forte. As he embarks on a new set of battles, the stakes are somewhat lower than in the past. Lives are not on the line; only jobs and reputations are.Take Horowitz's campaign against China expert and writer Orville Schell, dean of the UC-Berkeley Journalism School. In 1998 Horowitz's legal arm, the Individual Rights Foundation, filed suit against the Regents of the University of California on behalf of Michael Savage, a conservative radio commentator who had applied unsuccessfully for the deanship.Schell got the job, but the IRF suit contended that since he was selected through an old-boy network of New Leftists, his appointment constituted political patronage and was therefore illegal under California labor law.

Why was Schell, whom Horowitz has labeled a "Gucci Marxist," unfit for the position? "Although he has written several books on China and authored some op-ed pieces," Horowitz affirmed in Hating Whitey, he is"not a working journalist." Schell's curriculum vitae lists twelve books and 206 articles, including contributions to The New York Review of Books, The New Yorker and Harper's Magazine. The case eventually collapsed when Savage refused to be deposed.

Radio host Michael Savage claims he recently sat with President Donald Trump for “over an hour” and advised the president to continue falsely claiming that climate change “has nothing to do with mankind.” According to Savage, the president credited him with helping swing the election and encouraged him to keep broadcasting for “another 25 years.” Savage has used his radio program to attack people with autism, PTSD, and depression, and has advocated for killing “100 million” Muslims.

Savage spent his February 22 radio program recounting his February 18 visit with Trump at Mar-a-Lago in Florida. He began by stating that he “sat with the president for well over an hour, alone. ... We had dessert together.” Savage said he talked with Trump about a variety of topics, including climate science:

MICHAEL SAVAGE: I said, "Let me tell you the story about global warming, President Trump, it’s real simple. There have been at least five ice ages on this earth that we know of in recorded history. Five ice ages came and went long before there was industrialization. It has nothing to do with mankind." Big smile. Big smile. It’s simple. It’s simple. I don’t need mathematical formulae. If you went to the fifth grade you could understand that.

While the ice ages Savage referenced -- as well as historical warm periods -- did occur due to natural causes, Skeptical Science and others have debunked the ice ages argument and explained that today’s climate change can be explained only by human activity. An overwhelming majority of climate scientists have concluded that human activities are the primary cause of climate change.

Trump has repeatedly pushed junk science when it comes to climate change, calling it “a total, and very expensive, hoax!”

Savage has no credibility to talk about science. He’s called autism "a fraud, a racket," said people with PTSD and depression are "losers," advised people not to get flu shots because you can't trust the government, and theorized that liberals have been driven insane because of seltzer bubbles.

Hehas also pushed numerous conspiracy theories and has advocated killing “100 million” Muslims. The radio host once worked for MSNBC but was fired when he told a critical caller to "get AIDS and die.”

Savage later claimed during his program that Trump told him “we need this guy for another 25 years” and “without you I wouldn’t be president.”

He also said that White House chief of staff Reince Priebus came up to him and said, “Savage Nation, Michael Savage, love your show! … Love you, love your show!” Priebus reportedly added: “You’re not like the others. … You’re an edgy guy. … I’ve listened to you since I’m a kid.” He added that Priebus gave him his email address and cell phone number and said, “Text me anytime.”

Savage wrote on Facebook today that he has a plan “to investigate the subversive groups destroying America” and “will ask the president to allow me to help create this investigation.”

5) Obama Will Create A Personal Brownshirt Army

Ret. Gen. Jerry Boykin, who now serves as the executive vice president of the Family Research Council, repeatedly predicted that Obama planned to “establish a constabulary force” through the Affordable Care Act that would “control the population in America” much in the same way that Adolf Hitler used the Brownshirts to consolidate power, basing his accusation on a debunked myth about the health care law.

Boykin wasn’t alone in predicting that Obama would create such an army.

Another former military official, Ret. Army Major General Jerry Curry, warned that the Obama administration might “arm illegal immigrants” to begin killing Americans, with a focus on assassinating members of the armed forces.

Then-Republican Rep. Paul Broun of Georgia similarly warned in 2008 that Obama’s proposed expansion of national service programs was “exactly what Hitler did in Nazi Germany” and “exactly what the Soviet Union did.” Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, claimed in 2013 that Obama’s “secret security force” was already in existence.

Lawrence C. Mackin, a conservative writer, warned that Obama was bent on creating a “private internal army” including “illegal aliens” and Middle Eastern terrorists, and William Gheen of Americans for Legal Immigration PAC said Obama would give immigrants “a badge and a gun” in order to target the “Christian, heterosexual male” population. Far-right activist Jim Garrow thought Obama would fake contact with aliens in order to justify the creation of his own army.

Convinced that President Obama was set to wage an anti-white race war, radio host Michael Savage said that Obama intended to arm and “deputize” members of the Crips and Bloods gangs and turn them into his “shock troops.” He also claimed that Black Lives Matter supporters would be “Obama’s shock troops” and “secret private army” much like “the Brownshirts that Hitler had.”

After the release of Pope Francis’ papal encyclical on climate change, which calls for climate action in order to help the world’s poor, conservative radio host Michael Savage declared that the pope has been “hand-selected by the New World Order,” called him a Marxist and “eco-wolf in pope’s clothing,” and compared him to the false prophet in the book of Revelation “directing mankind to worship the Antichrist.” Savage concluded that “we are living in global tyranny right now.”

WND publishes books under the imprint WND Books. The imprint was launched in 2002. WND's imprint publishing partner was Christian publishing house Thomas Nelson Publishers (2002–2004).[37] Cumberland House Publishing (2004–2007),[38] and conservative publisher World Ahead Publishing (2007);[39] In 2008, WNDacquired World Ahead Media.[40]

WND Books has published books written by politicians andpundits such as Katherine Harris, former secretary of state of Florida; commentator Michael Savage, Jerome Corsi, Tom Tancredo, and Ken Blackwell. In April 2011, Paul Harris, writing for The Guardian, described WND Books as "a niche producer of rightwing conspiracy theories, religious books and 'family values' tracts."[41]

WND also publishes a printed magazine, *Whistleblower*. It operates other companies such as the G2 Bulletin, a subscription-only website described as an "intelligence resource" for "insights into geo-political and geo-strategic developments".

savage:

Books and other writings

In total Savage has written 29 books. Under the name Michael Savage he has written eight books, including a #1 New York Times bestseller and three further books which made the best seller list.[6][7][8] He has also reprinted two books with the name Savage, Reducing the Risk of Alzheimer's and Healing Children Naturally.[99]

His 1980 book Weiners's Herbal: The Guide to Herb Medicine advocated the medical benefits of marijuana.[12] However, he has more recently stated that the chemicals in marijuana make it too dangerous to be used as medicine. On his program, he condemns the recreational use of marijuana, occasionally devoting his show to "marijuana horror stories."[100][dead ^link]He has authored a number of other books on various herbal medicine topics under his given name.

Savage's recent books are political in nature and published by WND Books, a partnership between the conservative website WorldNetDaily and Thomas Nelson, a publisher of Christian books.

In 1991, Savage self-published The Death of the White Male, an argument against affirmative action.[101] In the book he calls affirmative action "reverse discrimination", and demonstrates his emerging philosophy. This eventually led to his starting the Paul Revere Society and he continues to sell the book to raise money for this group.[102]

In January 2003, Savage published The Savage Nation: Saving America from the Liberal Assault on Our Borders, Language and Culture, his first major book under the pseudonym Michael Savage. The book quickly reached the top of the New York Times Best Seller list, earning Savage, as noted above, a commentary show on MSNBC. The book directs attacks at "liberal media bias," the "dominating culture of 'she-ocracy'", gay activists, and liberals.

In January 2004, Savage published his second political book The Enemy Within: Saving America from the Liberal Assault on Our Schools, Faith, and Military. His next book, Liberalism Is a Mental Disorder, was released on April 12,2005. Unlike The Savage Nation, both of these books cited sources for some of the more controversial claims made.

In April2006, Savage released The Political Zoo. The book contains satirical profiles and cartoons of different public figures, most of whom are liberal political figures and celebrities, who are depicted in caricature as animals in the "Political Zoo", with Savage himself portrayed as the zoo keeper. Savage has remarked that the book is "easier to digest" than his previous political books.[103]

In October2010, Savage released "Trickle Up Poverty: Stopping Obama’s Attack on Our Borders, Economy, and Security".

Michael Alan Weiner (born March 31, 1942), better known by the pseudonym Michael Savage, is an American radio host, author, and political commentator. He is the host of The Savage Nation, a nationally syndicated talk show that airs throughout the United States on Talk Radio Network. The Savage Nation has an audience of 8 to 10 million listeners on 400 stations across the United States, making it the 3rd most listened to radio talk show in the country.[3][4] He holdsmaster's degrees in medical botany and medical anthropology and he earned a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, in nutritional ethnomedicine. As Michael Weiner, he has written books on herbal medicine andhomeopathy. As Michael Savage, he has written four *New York Times*-bestselling political books.[5][6][7][8]

Savage has summarized his political philosophy in three words: borders, language, and culture. Some, including Savage himself, have characterized his views as conservative nationalism,[9] while critics have characterized them as "fosteringextremism or hatred."[10] He outspokenly opposes illegal immigration to the United States, supports the English-only movement and argues that liberalism and progressivism are degrading American culture. Although his radio delivery is usually characterized as confrontational and politically themed, some of his show involves ruminating on topics such as medicine, nutrition, music, literature, history, theology, philosophy, sports, culture, and personal anecdotes.

[edit] Early life

Savage was born Michael Alan Weiner in the Bronx, New York, to Benjamin and Rae Weiner, he comes from Russian Jewish[2][11][12] heritage. He described his childhood as difficult, due to his father's "gruff and profane" personality and frequent verbal abuse.[2] His father died of a heart attack in his fifties.

After graduating from Jamaica High School,[13] Weiner attended Queens College, where he earned a bachelor's degree in education and sociology. After college Weiner taught high school for several years in New York City. His first marriage to Carol Ely in 1964 ended in divorce, and he remarried after meeting his current wife Janet in 1967. His first wife says that she became pregnant twice and aborted both pregnancies over Weiner's objections.[2] During this time Weiner also worked for famous psychedelic drug advocate Timothy Leary as keeper of the stone gatehouse on Leary's Millbrook estate. Leary hired him to the post because Weiner did not use LSD himself.[2] Weiner then earned two master's degrees inethnobotany and anthropology from the University of Hawaii. He obtained a Ph.D. in 1978 from the University of California, Berkeley, in nutritional ethnomedicine.[14] His thesis was titled Nutritional Ethnomedicine in Fiji, although he has repeatedly stated that his Ph.D. is in epidemiology. Weiner spent many years researching botany in the South Pacific and has a background in alternative medicine. As a result of living outside of the US during the Vietnam WarWeiner was not subject to conscription for the Vietnam War.

While in the South Pacific, he became fascinated with the 19th-century sailor Charles Savage, who was believed to have been the first man to bring firearms to Fiji.[15] That fascination led to Weiner's name change to Savage.

Savage and his second wife Janet have two children, a daughter and a son; his son, Russell Goldencloud Weiner, is the founder of the company that produces the Rockstar energy drink. Russell's mother, Janet, served as CFO of his company until July 2009.[2]

 Shift in philosophy

Savage introduced himself to certain writers in the North Beach area of San Francisco in the early 1960s.[16] He befriended and traveled with Beat poets Allen Ginsberg and Lawrence Ferlinghetti. Stephen Schwartz, also an acquaintance of Savage from this time, reported Savage possessed a photograph of himself and Ginsberg swimming naked in Hawaii and used the photograph as sort of a "calling card."[2][16] Savage maintained a correspondence with Ginsberg consisting of ten letters and a trio of postcards across four years, which is maintained with Ginsberg's papers at Stanford University.[2][17] One letter asked for Ginsberg and Ferlinghetti to come do a poetry reading, so others could "hear and see and know why I adore your public image."[12] One postcard mentions his desire to photograph Ginsberg in a provocative way, though Savage states that this correspondence is actually a forgery created by homosexual detractors.[2] Another acquaintance was poet and author Neeli Cherkovski, who says Savage dreamed of becoming a stand-up comic in the mold of Lenny Bruce.[2] On his radio show, Savage confirmed this desire but compared this with his desire, as a child, to become a cowboy.

Around 1980, an acquaintance, Robert Cathcart, says in his private conversations with Savage he knew him to have conservative political views.[16] Schwartz stated Savage became alienated from the North Beach scene in the early 1980s. Savage had intense arguments with his liberal friends.[16] When asked about his shift in politics and other views, Savage replied, "I was once a child; I am now a man."[12] Savage has cited many occurrences in his life that helped shape his conservative views. Savage states that his opinions on welfare were partly shaped by his first job out of college as a social worker.[18] He described one incident in which his supervisor had him deliver a check to a welfare client to furnish their apartment, while his own apartment was furnished with cardboard boxes.[19] Another turning point occurred for him as a writer of health and nutrition books in the 1980s, when he experienced "political opposition" after making the suggestion that the closure of homosexual bathhouses might be necessary in response to the emerging AIDS epidemic.[20] In 1994, in what he called "the last straw," his final health and nutrition manuscript, Immigrants and Epidemics, was rejected by publishers for being inflammatory.[21] In 1996, Savage applied to become the Dean of the Graduate School of Journalism at the University of California, Berkeley. The University instead selected award-winning journalist and China scholar Orville Schell. Savage sued the University, contending he was discriminated against because he was a conservative.[22] Savage later dropped the lawsuit.[23]

 Career as commentator

Main article: The Savage Nation

 Radio show

The rejection of his 1994 manuscript prompted him to record a demo tape with a mock radio talk show about illegal immigrants and epidemics. He mailed this tape to 250 radio stations in an attempt to change careers and become a radio talk show host.[16][19] On March 21, 1994, Savage began his radio career on KGO (a San Francisco news/talk radiostation) as a fill-in host for the liberal Ray Taliaferro. Less than a year later he was given a weekday show on KGO's sister station, KSFO.

At the time, his slogan was "To the right of Rush and to the left of God." On January 1, 1995, he was given his own show during the drive-time hours. The show quickly became a local hit. During his time at KSFO, Savage reached #1 inArbitron ratings among both adult men and women over 18 during afternoon drive-time in San Francisco and became top talk host in his timeslot in Northern California.[24] In 1999, he came to the attention of the Talk Radio Network, based inOregon, which currently syndicates his The Savage Nation radio program.

As of the fall of 2006, Savage has 8-10 million listeners per week,[25] making his show the third most widely heard broadcast in the United States. Savage calls his listeners "literate callers with intelligence, wit, and energy." He says that he tries to make a show that has a "...hard edge combined with humor and education...Those who listen to me say they hear a bit of Plato, Henry Miller, Jack Kerouac, Moses, Jesus, and Frankenstein."[24] Mark de la Viña of the San Jose Mercury News wrote of Savage, "In contrast to Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Laura Schlessinger, Bay Area-based Savage mixes conservative diatribe and blunt observations with acerbic humor and a gift of gab. It has propelled him to the top of radio talk-show ratings as well as bestseller book lists."[12]

On September 10, 2009, KNEW-AM (910 kHz) in Savage's home market of San Francisco announced that it was dropping the Michael Savage program and replacing him with John and Ken from sister station KFI-AM (640 kHz)/Los Angeles. John Scott, program director of KNEW said in an e-mail that the station was headed "...in a different philosophical and ideological direction, featuring more contemporary content and more local information, The Savage Nation does not fit into that vision." According to Arbitron monthly ratings KNEW-AM dropped in the ratings since Savage was let go prompting many in the industry to question their move.[26] San Francisco station KTRB picked up the program for the San Francisco market, and saw a ratings boost in the afternoon drive.[27] However, the program was among the first casualties when KTRB went into receivership in September of 2010.[28]

Savage had asked his audience for their opinion prior to consenting to a profile interview by Kelefa Sanneh of The New Yorker; Savage eventually accepted that offer and the New Yorker profile titled Party of One was published in the August 3, 2009 issue, which covered Savage's life and personality in great detail.[29][30]

On January 22, 2010, Savage revealed to his audience that a writer for the publication Playboy had contacted him via email to do a lengthy interview, and again asked his listeners if he should accept the offer. During the show, Savage read from personal emails between the Playboy writer and himself. The writer admitted to being a listener of the Savage Nation but a critic of the profile done by The New Yorker. The writer also stated that the purpose of the interview was to "rattle" Playboy's readers. On May 12, 2010, Savage revealed that he had granted the interview at his home. He read from a pre-publication copy of the 8,000 word Playboy interview, in which the writer expressed animosity for Savage and his views. Savage said that he was disappointed at the lack of journalistic objectivity, but did not harbor hatred for the writer. He referred back to the New Yorker interview by Kelefa Sanneh, and praised Sanneh as a real writer who had understood his subject.

MSNBC television show

Savage was hired by MSNBC president Erik Sorenson to do a one-hour show beginning March 8, 2003, despite Savage's previous criticism of the network in his book The Savage Nation and the objections of NBC employees like anchor Tom Brokaw, who asked NBC executives, "Is this the sort of man who embodies the values of NBC?"[17] Sorenson, at the time, called Savage "brash, passionate and smart," and promised that he would provide "compelling opinion and analysis with an edge."[31]

From the very beginning of his stint at MSNBC, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) urged the show's sponsors to stop advertising on the show. Savage did not sue GLAAD, but Talk Radio Network Inc. (TRN), which syndicated his radio show, did sue the owners of three small noncommercial websites that had criticized Savage and endorsed the call for advertisers to withdraw their support for the show. The suit alleged that the defendants had caused Savage financial damage by interfering with his relationship with advertisers, had used material from The Michael Savage Show without permission, and had spread "false and malicious" information about Savage.[32] The suit was brought inIllinois, the location of Culligan, a company that stopped advertising with TRN.[33] Public Citizen undertook the legal defense of the owners of savagestupidity.com.[34] Savage also contended before the National Arbitration Forum that the "savagestupidity.com" and "michaelsavagesucks.com" domain names were "confusingly similar" to his own "michaelsavage.com", and that he should be given those domain names.[35] Several months after filing the lawsuit, TRN withdrew it without obtaining any concessions from the defendants.[36] The National Arbitration Forum ruled against Savage's claim.[37]

Four months later, on July 7, Savage was fired from his MSNBC television show after remarks made in response to a caller, later identified as prank caller Bob Foster, who insulted Savage's teeth. Savage then asked if Foster was a "sodomite", to which the caller answered, "Yes, I am." Savage then said to the caller,

“Oh, so you're one of those sodomites. You should only get AIDS and die, you pig; how's that? Why don't you see if you can sue me, you pig? You got nothing better to do than to put me down, you piece of garbage? You got nothing to do today? Go eat a sausage, and choke on it. Get trichinosis. Now do we have another nice caller here who's busy because he didn't have a nice night in the bathhouse who's angry at me today? Put another, put another sodomite on....no more calls?...I don't care about these bums; they mean nothing to me. They're all sausages.[38][39]”

The day after being fired, Savage apologized on his radio program and on his website. He explained that he believed that MSNBC had gone to commercial to cover the gaffe of the attempted sabotage by a prank caller and that he was off the air at the time of the offensive comments, despite the fact that clips of the segment show Savage going to commercial after he made the comments. He also said his remarks were meant only to insult the caller, not all people with AIDS.[40]

Personal views

Michael Savage calls himself an "independent-minded individualist" and says that he "fits no stereotype."[41] Savage criticizes big government, homosexuality and activism on some issues, and Liberalism, accuses the media of liberal bias, and champions environmentalism and animal rights.[9] He has said that there are three aspects that define a nation: borders, language, and culture. He founded the Paul Revere Society in 1996 with his son Russell to protest illegal immigration; he says the group's mission is to "bring together Americans who actively seek to take back our borders, our language, and our traditional culture from the Liberal left corroding our great nation."[42] In 1998, the organization had approximately 4,000 members.[43] The organization's annual information return, form 990, for 2004 reported that 62% ($109,413 out of $178,215) of its expenses were for fundraising activities.[44] On June 5, 2006, the IRS rescinded the tax-exempt status of The Paul Revere Society.[45]

[edit] Activism

[edit] Help with Legal Defense

Savage has regularly donated money toward the legal defense of the Marines accused of murdering civilians in Haditha, Iraq; occasionally, Savage will offer proceeds from any sales through his website. Savage had regular contact with the attorneys of the accused and criticizes their treatment at Camp Pendleton.[46] Most recently, Savage has donated over $10,000 to the U.S. Marines Charity Defense Fund at the Thomas More Law Center[47] On April 25, 2007, he pledged $1 for each copy of Healing Children Naturally and Reducing the Risk of Alzheimer's purchased from his website to be donated to the U.S. Marines Defense Fund.[48] The Marines were ultimately found not guilty.

[edit] "The Savage Nation Party"

On October 9, 2008 broadcast of his radio show, Savage announced that he was in the process of forming a third party. Savage expressed an interest in producing third party candidates within the next two to four years. Throughout the broadcast, Savage referred to the party as "the Savage Nation Party" as well. As a result of his stated discontent with what he perceives as an impotent two-party system, Savage expressed a desire to create a political force which would endorse "borders, language, and culture." During the show, Savage requested that lawyers familiar with the creation of political parties volunteer their services, and also asked for volunteer assistance in acquiring an unused church building in the San Francisco area for use as a party headquarters.

[edit] "Elephant Rescue"

The Paul Revere Society and Dr. Michael Savage have donated $25,000 to the International Fund for Animal Welfare to aid in the translocation of 83 elephants in Malawi, ensuring the safety of both the elephants and the villagers of that region.[49]

[edit] "Lt. Michael Behenna"

Main article: Michael Behenna

On his nationally syndicated talk radio program, Michael Savage announced that he had sent another $50,000 to aid in the defense of Lieutenant Michael Behenna, the Army Ranger who has been sentenced by the government to 15 years in prison for killing Ali Mansur Mohammed while serving in Iraq. The alleged murder was committed on May 16 under a bridge in the northern oil refinery town of Baiji, after the two soldiers left their base with Mohammed to set him free at a checkpoint. An Iraqi translator, whose name was withheld for security reasons, testified that Mohammed was first shot and then had his face disfigured with a thermite grenade. "Lieutenant Behenna started talking with Ali Mansur and Sergeant Warner followed them," the witness said. "Behenna and Warner started taking off Ali Mansur's clothes with their knives. They then cut his handcuffs." Behenna ordered the detainee to sit, the translator said, adding that Behenna seemed to be keen to get information from the detainee regarding an attack on US troops in April. The witness, who was acting as a translator to Behenna, said the officer asked the detainee several times: "What do you know you have to tell me." "Ali Mansur said I will talk to you but Lieutenant Behenna pulled trigger and killed him," the translator said speaking in English, adding that Behenna had told him that the detainee was linked to an attack on US forces near Baiji on April 21.[50] According to Behenna’s account, Mansur lunged at him as he was being interrogated and Behenna shot him in self-defense. Though an expert witness for the prosecution supports Behenna’s version of events, his testimony was not heard. This has sparked accusations of a Brady violation and several appeals. Savage has previously given $50,000 to Behenna’s defense from the Savage Legal Defense Fund and his own personal contributions. According to Vicki Behenna, the lieutenant’s mother, additional contributions from listeners since Michael Savage brought up this topic on his program have amounted to over $40,000. This brings the total contributions from The Savage Nation to nearly $150,000.[51]

[edit] Awards, criticisms, and controversies

[edit] Awards

On June 9, 2007, Talkers Magazine awarded Savage with the publication's annual "Freedom of Speech Award," and he accepted it with a pre-recorded speech.[52]

[edit] Criticisms

In July 2005, conservative writer Bernard Goldberg ranked Savage number 61 in his book 100 People Who Are Screwing Up America. Goldberg wrote that "Savage's brand of over-the-top bile...puts him right in there with the angriest haters on the Left."[53]

Liberal advocacy groups, media watchdogs and commentators such as GLAAD, FAIR, and Dave Gilson of Salon.comaccuse Savage of fascist leanings,[54] racism,[31] homophobia,[55] bigotry[31] and Islamophobia[56] because of his controversial statements about homosexuality, Islam, feminism, sex education, and immigration.[57] On his September 21, 1999 broadcast, Savage said that the motivation for female students who come from a Marin County private school to feed and provide services to the homeless is so they "can go in and get raped by them, because they seem to like the excitement of it..."[58]

On April 17, 2006, he said of Muslims "They say, 'Oh, there's a billion of them.' I said, 'So, kill 100 million of them, then there'll be 900 million of them.' I mean, would you rather die—would you rather us die than them?"[59][60] After Savage was banned from the UK, this was also reported in the UK media.[61]

[edit] Controversies

[edit] Roman Catholic Church and immigration

In March 2006, Savage drew the ire of some in the Roman Catholic community when he accused the Roman Catholic Church of breaking federal law by giving assistance to illegal immigrants (in response to statements by Roger Cardinal Mahony of Los Angeles calling it "pastoral support").[62] William A. Donohue, the president of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, was scheduled to be on the show that day but refused after he became upset upon hearing Savage's language. Later he responded by saying "what is not fine is Savage's diatribe about the 'greedy pigs' in the Catholic Church and how 'the institution is rotten from the top to the bottom.' He owes all Catholics an apology."[63]

On March 28, 2006, Savage encouraged his listeners to burn Mexican flags to counter massive rallies held in California during which demonstrators marched in opposition to proposed legislation that would impose new immigration restrictions.[64]

[edit] CSPAN broadcast of Talkers Award

When Talkers Magazine awarded Savage with the publication's annual "Freedom of Speech Award," CSPAN opted not to broadcast a pre-recorded speech that had been sent by Michael Savage.[52] Although the award ceremony had received coverage in previous years, C-SPAN did not televise it due to its policy of only televising such speeches when delivered in person. Savage stated that C-SPAN's decision was "censorship" and he told his listeners to express their ire to C-SPAN through calls and e-mails to the organization.[65]

[edit] Dispute with CAIR

In early November 2007, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) called on radio listeners to contact companies that advertise on Savage's program to express their concerns about his comments concerning Muslims. Savage was quoted as saying Muslims "need deportation", and that adherents of Islam would do well to “take your religion and shove it up your behind” because "I’m sick of you."[66] On his show and website, Savage countered that CAIR is linked toterrorist organizations, and was an "unindicted co-conspirator in an anti-terrorist trial". On November 8, 2007, following a campaign by CAIR meant to get Savage off the air by going after his sponsors, Citrix Systems, Inc. pulled its advertisements from his show.[67] On November 15, OfficeMax followed suit.[68][dead ^link][69]^

Savage sued CAIR for its use, on its website, of excerpts from his show. Savage’s lawsuit alleges copyright infringement by CAIR.[70] The suit alleged that CAIR's repackaging of Savage's comments was "deliberately designed to obscure the specific message conveyed by Michael Savage". The excerpts included Savage's characterization of the Qur'an as "a throwback document" and a "book of hate". CAIR called the suit "bizarre, sloppy and baseless".[71] On July 25, 2008, theUnited States district court dismissed Savage's suit against CAIR, holding that the posting of the audio clip was protected under the First Amendment doctrine of fair use, as it was used to "comment on and rebut derogatory statements regarding their organization and their religious affiliations."[72] The court gave Savage the opportunity to file an amended complaint if he wanted to try to cure the defects in his suit. On August 14, 2008, however, Savage's lawyer announced that Savage would not file an amended complaint and would drop the case.[73][74] CAIR then sought attorneys fees against Savage but U.S. District Court judge Susan Illston denied that request.[75]

[edit] Autism

In July 2008, Savage claimed that the increasing rate of autism diagnoses was the result of "a racket" designed to get disability payments for "poorer families who have found a new way to be parasites on the government."[76] He returned to the subject on his July 16, 2008 show with the following remarks:

“Now, the illness du jour is autism. You know what autism is? I'll tell you what autism is. In 99 percent of the cases, it's a brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out. That's what autism is. What do you mean they scream and they're silent? They don't have a father around to tell them, "Don't act like a moron. You'll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up. Act like a man. Don't sit there crying and screaming, idiot."[77][78]”

On July 21, 2008, following a public information campaign led by the liberal advocacy group, Media Matters for America, several dozen parents and grandparents of autistic children picketed outside the studios of WOR in New York, calling for Savage to be fired and for commercial sponsors to withdraw their advertising from his program.[79] In response, WOR issued a statement saying, "We regret any consternation that his remarks may have caused to our listeners."[76] Also that day, the insurance company Aflac pulled its advertising,[80] and the Supertalk Mississippi radio network dropped Savage's program, replacing it with The Dennis Miller Show.[81] Later that evening, Savage devoted his entire three-hour program to the subject, taking calls from parents who took issue with his comments. On that show Savage stated that his remarks had been "ripped out of context" by "far left Stalinists" who want him off of the air, of which the bigger issue, when he appeared on Larry King Live, was the overdiagnosis of children due to the pharmaceutical companies' drive to drug children for higher profits.[76][79] On July 25, 2008, Autism United advocates gathered to announce that several advertisers, including RadioShack, Sears, Home Depot, and DirectBuy, will discontinue their support for Savage's show.[82]

Savage's employer, Talk Radio Network, has responded by releasing a lengthy statement, along with a selection of 20 audio clips drawn from Savage's discussions of autism, to show that the comments were taken out of context.[83]

[edit] Banned from entering the United Kingdom

The then UK Home Secretary, Jacqui Smith, announced on May 5, 2009 that Savage was on a list of individuals banned from entering the United Kingdom as he is "considered to be engaging in unacceptable behaviour by seeking to provoke others to serious criminal acts and fostering hatred which might lead to inter-community violence".[84][85][86] The list also includes Erich Gliebe, Fred Phelps, Mike Guzovsky and Abdul Alim Musa.[87] During his radio broadcast on that same day, Savage declared that he would sue Smith personally for defamation, calling her a "lunatic".[88] Smith defended her choice of individuals, stating "If you can't live by the rules that we live by, the standards and the values that we live by, we should exclude you from this country and, what's more, now we will make public those people that we have excluded." Savage has subsequently repeated his intention to sue; the British Government has responded that any such legal action would be fought "robustly".

During a subsequent NPR talk show, Savage claimed that he has never advocated violence and repeatedly invoked theUnited States Constitution's First Amendment (seemingly unaware it does not apply to the United Kingdom). When host Neal Conan pointed out that the U.S. Constitution does not apply to the United Kingdom, Savage replied, "No. Thank God I'm an American."[89] Savage also called on his listeners to support him by canceling travel and business in Britain as well as by boycotting British-made goods, commenting, "If they want to play hardball, we'll play hardball."[90] When a caller challenged Savage about his talk-show rhetoric, Savage called him a "foaming lunatic... someone in pajamas in a mental asylum... You’re nobody and I’m not going to talk to you!" At that point, the host ended the interview.[89] Political commentators later remarked on the "hypocrisy" of Savage's comments on the show,[91] "It's quite ironic that someone like Michael Savage sees no hypocrisy in strongly defending his right to the First Amendment only to show outrage and intolerance a few minutes later toward the views of someone else he doesn't agree with."[92]

Of the banning, the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, wrote: "America still has a constitutional protection of free speech, and I have been amazed... to see how few people in this country are willing to stick up for that elementary principle... a country once famous for free speech is now hysterically and expensively sensitive to anything that could be taken as a slight."[93] In The Guardian, Catherine Bennett wrote: "The ban on Savage is so far from being a comprehensible act, so staggeringly capricious and stupid, as to defy evaluation."[94] While Sam Leith wrote: "Barring this shock-jock from Britain risks turning a rabid blabbermouth into a beacon for free speech."[61] An editorial in the Daily Mail stated: "The move appears to have backfired spectacularly at a time when Jacqui Smith's job is already hanging by a thread after a string of expense scandals."[95]

On July 12, 2010 the new Conservative Party-led government of Prime Minister David Cameron announced that it will continue to ban Savage from entering the UK.[96][97]

Savage has referred to violent neo-Nazi far-right group the English Defense League as "the true brits", calling them "the best of britain" and inciting violence against British Muslims by saying: "i'll never understand why the brits didn't let them wade into the slimy muslim bastards with bars and beer bottles".[98]

In October2010, Savage released "Trickle Up Poverty: Stopping Obama’s Attack on Our Borders, Economy

===note this is sum:

In his bestselling book, "Stop the Coming Civil War," Michael Savage makes a well-documented argument for the multi-faceted war waged by this administration on our borders, language, culture, the U.S. military, the middle class, our health care, civil rights, science, schools, and our allies.

In his opinion, depending on one's political views, the point of no return has been reached with the NSA spying program, with the release of terrorists from Guantanamo Bay without congressional input, or with the purposeful flood of illegal aliens into the United States.

Because this administration uses so adroitly the politics of race and class warfare, Americans are ever more divided and racially polarized. Consequently, our national security, freedom, and survival are threatened on many fronts.

"Desiring to control us from inception to death, from womb to tomb," Savage predicts that our nation will eventually "snap" from the controlling pressure exercised on what we do, eat, drink, think, learn, speak, read, and write. (p. 15)

Facing a constant assault on our "borders, language, and culture," Savage explains that "we've become a post-Constitutional society," in the most perilous position since the 1860s, a "culture of statelessness and corruption." He compares our nation with a "tinderbox" ready to ignite. In his opinion, the bi-partisan rule from Washington is based on "greed and hunger for power of a crony oligarchy, not the rule of law." (pp. 16-17)

Opining that the suspension of the filibuster rule by Harry Reid enabled the dismissal of legal challenges to the (un) Affordable Care Act and the eventual destruction of the best health care system in the world, Savage laments the fact that the rest of America seems to live in peace, unperturbed by "subterranean rumblings" caused by:

The "once righteous and heroic America" is replaced "with a leftist government defined by immorality and greed." (p. 31)

A true patriot and son of a legal immigrant from Russia, Savage wants to put a stop to the corporate debasement of our "most cherished possession: our pride in our country." (p. 31)

War on Culture, Language, and Borders

Savage describes how the war on our culture, language, and borders evolved from the liberal "humane" enforcement of immigration laws which released criminal aliens on our streets. (p. 28)

Illegal immigrants are not here to chase the American dream, said Savage, they are here to "game the system" and strip hard-working Americans of their wealth and establish a fundamentally transformed America that resembles the hell-hole they've escaped. Savage describes the President's Dreamers as a "living nightmare." (p. 34)

Savage explains that the war on our culture, on Christians, on women, on men, on children, on minorities, and on the rule of law is expanded to include the introduction of cultural Marxism, a war on morality, allowing and promoting "polymorphous sexuality" and "hedonism." (p. 40)

Communist professor Herbert Marcuse's 1960s slogan, "Make love, not war," has become in our current time, said Savage, "Make love, not money."

Government dependency, perennial poverty, metro sexuality, and a distrust of strong males are "foundational components of leftist values," Savage explains. Neutralizing the male population and disempowering the military assure success of the leftist agenda. (p. 43)

Savage continues, "A strong man is the very emblem of the democratic capitalism's evil power." The war on masculinity is thus justified. (p. 47)

Savage enumerates some of the agents that contribute to the degradation of our society: cultural elites, Planned Parenthood, Center for American Progress, Think Progress, FCC, "researchers" policing our newsrooms, and political leftists opposing Christians everywhere.

Even though English is the "official language of the world," Savage laments politicians who are "too weak-kneed, to make English the official language of the U.S." (p. 55)

War on the Military

In his opinion, the war on our military is waged by a man who "would speak loudly and carry a limp stick." Some of Savage's examples include:

**War on the Middle Class**

Savage, in his inimitable way of connecting the dots of seemingly unrelated events, compares the current war on the middle class with the capture by the Union forces of New Orleans, a shipping point for Confederate forces who helped them fund the war.

Savage sees a parallel between the economy of the Civil War and today's economy. Economics and political power played a very important role in both. Slavery was the "rallying cry" for the Civil War, but economic and political power was the underlying cause. Savage said that five times as many wealthy men were found in the North as had been thirty years earlier. The wealth built in the nineteenth century was based on real manufacturing and trade. Today two thousand plus billionaires have increased their wealth with electronic money creation, not something tangible. (p. 104)

Savage aptly describes the stagnant economy as a "trapdoor economy through which more and more middle class Americans have dropped into poverty." (p. 87)

This stagnant economy was created by:

Savage explains how seventy percent of U.S. stock market trading is rigged by allowing robots to do high-frequency trading in nanno-seconds, permitting market manipulation and centralization of wealth. (p. 97)

America is now a permanent welfare state and poverty is at an all-time high. Raising the minimum wage will exacerbate poverty and increase welfare recipients, while the winner, JPMorgan Chase, will benefit $560 million by processing Electronic Benefit Transfer cards (p. 102)

The middle class is adversely affected by the excessively printed and devalued dollar and the loss of its role as "reserve currency" and "petro dollar."

The middle class is plagued by an increasing misery index, a decreasing freedom index, rising food and energy prices, the Pope's war on free markets and capitalism, and prioritizing climate change politics over job creation.

War on Medicine

Savage talks about the war on medicine, unleashed by Obamacare, a Castro style medicine provided by government-controlled, single payer care like Venezuela. Green Mountain Care in Vermont makes a good example of a single payer system that spends $2 billion a year on health care, the entire tax revenue of the State of Vermont, a behemoth that lawmakers want to repeal. (p. 118)

Savage points out that Obamacare is so ill-conceived, non-generic drugs are not covered. Generic drug prices will go up as demand will go up. When less people will afford generic drugs, pharmacies will go broke. Healthy people will enjoy free annual visits. Sick people with cancer should put their affairs in order. (p. 123)

War on Civil Rights

Savage says that the war on civil rights includes attacks and bans on gun ownership, benefits to illegal aliens, irrelevance of the rule of law because of excessive regulations and executive orders, DOJ's denial of civil rights to whites, auditing of conservative groups and people such as True the Vote and James O'Keefe, auditing of whistle blowers, and lack of convictions for white collar crimes. (pp. 162-163)

**War on Science**

The war on science centers on climate change. Savage devotes chapter 8 to the global warming debacle, focusing on some of the individual players in the ongoing deception.

Calling the EPA, "the Environmental Pilferage Agency,Savage describes it as one of the most corrupt agencies in modern American history … its only rival is the IRS." (p. 188)

The real cost of our climate change policy, Savage says, is the cost of expensive and bankrupt solar and wind energy, animal and bird casualties, huge cost of conversion, subsidies, anddamage to human health.

Fracking is a success story. Energy production has been hindered by Obama's non-approval of the XL Keystone pipeline from Canada.

Savage explains solar flares and volcanic activity in relationship to climate change. The NASA and NOAA reports were described by the MIT scientists as sinking to the level of "hilarious incoherence." (p. 199)

War on Schools

The war on schools is the war to dumb down our students with the standards of Common Core. Savage talks about "outcome based education" developed in Chicago and the college textbook publishing which has "degenerated into a racket." (p. 206)...

Hitting the Hateful Books

Even rival NewsMax is plugging Michael Savage's WND-published tome. And who wrote Katherine Harris' book, anyway?

By Terry Krepel

Posted 1/20/2003

NewsMax and WorldNetDaily are rivals. Neither site links to the other's stories (they both will link or post CNSNews.com stories, though CNS rarely acknowledges either of them), and will not even mention each other's names if they can at all avoid it. WND has even takena couple shots at NewsMax.

But as in other businesses, when there's money to be made or a mutual cause to be shilled, rivals can be come friends, or at least tolerate the other's proximity. Which brings us to Michael Savage.

Savage is one of the more incendiary of the conservative talk-show hosts whose appeal is more toward the lockstep dittohead Clinton-bashing of NewsMax than the somewhat more civil, occasionally libertarian tendencies of WND. But WND is publishing Savage's new book, "The Savage Nation."

WND, of course, has been plugging the book in its usual blur-the-lines-between-editorial-and-advertising style; one WND e-mail touts --to give you an idea of what to expect from Savage -- that one thing Savage addresses in the book is how to "keep whacko liberals from turning our churches into clinics that abort babies - and then sell their body parts." (Has this been a problem?) And in a Jan. 19 story touting the book's appearance on the New York Times bestseller list, WND leader Joseph Farah practically hyperventilates: 'To say that this book is a publishing sensation is an understatement. There's no telling where this book will go. It's hitting a chord."

In the face of such an onslaught by its rival, what oh what is NewsMax to do?

Well, what NewsMax's Christpher Ruddy does is suck it up and plug the book. "If you are thrilled by a man with the courage to say what millions of conservative Americans have been thinking but are afraid to say out loud, don't wait a second to get your copy of 'The Savage Nation,'" he gushes in a Jan. 7 column. He also notes that Savage believes that liberals are in favor of such things as "arresting, banning or rewriting the authentic Bible as a hate book." and "mandatory suicide for sick seniors." And that he shows "rare insight and courage" for saying such things.

There appears to be limit to Ruddy's boosterism, though -- you can't actually buy the book from NewsMax. The book-buying links there are to Amazon.com, not to the NewsMax store. In the link, there's an embedded reference to something called "Nelson Direct," an apparent reference to Thomas Nelson Publishers, WND's partner in its book venture; it looks like a way to save a little face by not actually linking to WND. An animated banner in the ad section, though, is the same as the one on the WND site.

Dang. A guy who "wages war against the 'group of psychopaths' known as PETA, the ACLU and the liberal media" (as the promo copy at the WND store reads) sounds about as reasonable and trustworthy as the rest of NewsMax (which is to say, not very), and Ruddy could have at least screwed up the courage to cut a wholesale deal with Farah. Still, you gotta hand it to the guy for providing his rival a little publicity -- hard to tell if it's free or not because the line between editorial and advertising is blurrier at NewsMax than it is at WND, but the banner and the special Amazon link suggests NewsMax is getting paid for its efforts -- if not because it's in the service of promoting one of right-wing radio's more frightening, polarizing figures.

Meanwhile, we'll leave it to blogger Scoobie Davis to ponder why such a bile-filled book is being printed under the aegis of Thomas Nelson Publishers, a company better known for printing less hateful things like Bibles.

* * *

Speaking of books published by WorldNetDaily: Who wrote Katherine Harris' book, anyway?

According to Palm Beach Post columnist Frank Cerabino, she doesn't seem to have had much to do with writing "Center of the Storm." In a Dec. 11 column pretty much obliterating the book ("You get the feeling that her biggest contribution was prepping for the dust jacket photo. ... Harris' book is a grand pour from an empty vessel ..."), he shares some information on who really wrote the thing. The man's name is George Grant, and he doesn't even get his name on the cover; his only mention is in the acknowledgements at the end of the book.

Who is George Grant? He runs something called the King's Meadow Study Center, the stated purpose of which is to "assist the modern church to promote a practical cultural expression of the Christian worldview." (He endorses WND as "the first and best source for news from a conservative perspective. Make this site your internet homepage.") He has written, co-written or edited a few dozen books with interesting titles such as "The Dittohead’s Little Instruction Book," "Immaculate Deception: The Shifting Agenda of Planned Parenthood" and "Hillarious: The Wacky Wit, Wisdom, and Wonderment of Hillary Rodham-Clinton." (Are all conservatives required by law to write at least one Clinton-bashing book? We haven't seen this one, but its appearance among those other titles leaves little doubt about its purpose.) He also takes credit for writing "Center of the Storm" along "with Katherine Harris."

Among his writings on the King's Meadow web site is your basic conservative denunciation of the sexiness of Abercrombie & Fitch ("Now, if the doyens of cool at Abercrombie and Fitch have their way, [your teenage daughter will] also be learning all the joys of group sex, homoeroticism, exhibitionism, pornography, and gang rape from them ...") in which he doesn't even spell "Benetton" correctly.

And even then, Cerabino writes, Grant didn't write that much of Harris' book either. The bulk of "Center of the Storm," he writes, is "allegedly Harris' 12 principles of leadership" as illustrated by "the great struggles of real leaders. George Washington. Winston Churchill. Sojourner Truth...." Turns out those little leadership essays were written by Grant's students; Cerabino notes that "nine students are credited with helping Grant."

Sheesh. No wonder WND had a buy-one-get-one-free deal on "Center of the Storm" during the month of December.

Far-Right Shock Jock Michael Savage Concocts Conspiracy Blaming Muslims for Boston Bombing -- and the Entire Govt. for Covering It Up

April 18, 2013  |

No one has been officially accused of orchestrating the Boston Marathon bombing that left at least three dead and scores wounded, but one of the most popular radio hosts in America claims to have found the perpetrator. On April 16, right-wing shock jock Michael Savage declared the 22-year-old Saudi national who was tackled and arrested while fleeing from the site of the explosions, and who was then released and cleared of all suspicion, was in fact an Al Qaeda operative dispatched to carry out a 9/11 style operation inside the US. What’s more, Savage claimed the federal government was engaged in a conspiracy with Islamist forces to cover up the true identity of the bomber and place the blame on a more convenient target, perhaps a right-wing terrorist.

Since Savage’s broadcast, a remarkably similar conspiracy has gained currency [3] in right-wing media, finding its way into a House committee hearing today when Republican Rep. Jeff Duncanattempted [4] to corner Department of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano. “Now we have someone being deported for national security concerns and I’m assuming he’s got some sort of link to terror or he wouldn’t be being deported,” Duncan claimed, referring to the Saudi man cleared of suspicion earlier in the week.

Napolitano corrected Duncan, assuring him that the man was never deported. “Like I said,” she reminded Duncan, “I don’t even think he was technically a person of interest or a suspect, that was a wash.”

According to Savage, such denials by federal officials prove that a cover-up is afoot. To help him flesh out the details of the government plot, Savage invited a self-proclaimed “ex-PLO terrorist” named Walid Shoebat onto his April 16 show. For a full hour, Shoebat outlined the key players, from the Obama administration to Wahhabis in Saudi Arabia to longtime Hillary Clinton assistant Huma Abedin to the CIA, FBI, US military, liberals and gay activists, all united in a conspiracy to hide the true Saudi identity of the bomber, pin the blame on a more convenient target, and advance the creeping Islamicization of America.

Savage urged Shoebat along at each lurid twist and turn, heaping layers of anti-Muslim vitriol atop his guest’s bizarre diatribes. Amidst an atmosphere of national tragedy, mourning, and trepidation, the duo delivered what might have been one of the most outrageous hours in recent talk radio history, inciting wildly against Muslims in America, pointing the finger at an innocent man for a heinous terror attack, and implicating the entire federal government for letting him go.

A few extremists have fashioned their own conspiracy theories about the Boston bombing – the notoriously unhinged Alex Jones called it [5] a government “false flag” operation – but none boast anything close to Savage’s influence. According to the trade industry magazine Talkers, as of September 2012, Savage’s show was the third most popular [6] political talk show in the country, just behind Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity with 8 million listeners a day. Unlike Limbaugh and Hannity, who cater to the Republican base, Savage cultivates listeners among the most rightward Tea Party fringe with anti-government conspiracism and unvarnished Islamophobia – “when I see a woman walking around with a burqa, I see a Nazi,” he once said. Along with prominent neo-Nazis, white supremacists, and Islamic extremists, Savage has been barred [7] from entering the United Kingdom.

Hours after the Boston Marathon bombings, Savage predicted, “They're gonna release the Saudi guy in the hospital; they're gonna wipe their hands of it and say he had nothing to do with it. He was only an innocent spectator and that it was a false lead, and anyone who said it was a Saudi or a Muslim was a racist… This is the playbook today.”

Claiming vindication the following day, Savage turned to his guest, Shoebat, for his expert opinion. “The man is linked to Al Qaeda. No question about it,” Shoebat said. Several of his family members are Al Qaeda leaders… The whole mechanism is interlinked with the spread of Muslim minorities all over the globe.”

According to Shoebat, the Saudi national, Abdulrahman Ali Alharbi, has several relatives locked up in the US military prison in Guantanamo Bay. “So this could easily be made as a revenge,” he claimed. “What Americans don’t understand is that a clan is linked…so the support for terrorism comes from a clan support.”

Shoebat then claimed that the US government had scrubbed photos from Alharbi’s Facebook page that implicated him in jihadist activities.

“Why would the FBI cover for the Saudis?” Savage asked in an innocent tone.

“We have no Qaeda problem,” Shoebat answered. “This would be very embarrassing for President Obama to have [an] Al Qaeda problem.”

“A ha!” exclaimed Savage. “In other words, it would show there’s a failure in the intelligence community.”

Savage added that the mainstream media was in on the plot, especially Fox News, which is partially owned by Saudi billionaire Prince Walid Bin Talal, and had therefore erected “a cordon sanitaire around the Saudi connection.”

“That’s what it is,” Shoebat interjected. “It’s a cover up from all levels. How did these photos go away?.. The FBI is gonna sweep this under the rug. You are right. Within a week this will be swept under the rug.”

“Oh my God!” Savage responded with a dramatic gasp. “Just like Benghazi.”

The Islamist-Obama conspiracy was so vast that only a rogue agent willing to risk it all for his country could save America. “We need some operative in our own government who’s not going to go along with the program,” Savage declared. “Very difficult because they will lose their pension and they themselves will be nailed to a cross.”

“Mr. Savage, I worked with the Homeland Security for ten years,” Shoebat claimed. “I provided them with Al Qaeda locations in Libya. Latitude, longitude – everything. I know with it’s like dealing with the apparatus. They wanted nothing to do with with information; nothing to do with facts.” There is no record of Shoebat consulting for the Department of Homeland Security on Libya. However, he once earned a $5000 speaking fee through a DHS grant to provide a group of South Dakota police officers and sheriff’s deputies with his insider’s perspective on the mentality of Muslim terrorists. “All Islamic organizations in America should be the number one enemy. All of them,” he told his audience. The appearance prompted a CNN investigation [8] of Shoebat’s background, which found that his claims to have been a former Palestinian terrorist to be completely bogus, with his family near Bethlehem describing him as a “regular kid” who left for the US at 18 to work as a computer programmer.

Shoebat was thus unmasked as a run-of-the-mill con artist huckstering his way across the country, raking in as much as half a million dollars a year through a shady foundation that claimed to aid persecuted Christians, but which provided no evidence [9] of having done so. While raking in cash from American rubes, he has inspired as much resentment against Muslims as possible. One participant at an anti-terror seminar led by Shoebat described [10] his solution as follows: “Kill them…including the children.” Anders Breivik, the right-wing anti-Muslim terrorist who killed over 80 people at a youth camp in Norway, cited Shoebat over 15 times in his manifesto.

Savage, a former New Ager named Michael Weiner who skinny dipped [11] with Allen Ginsberg and palled around with the beats in San Francisco’s 1960’s-era North Beach scene, did his best to help his guest deflect the charges of fraud.

“Are you in hiding?” Savage asked Shoebat.

“Pretty much,” he haltingly replied, claiming persecution at the hands of godless liberals. “After becoming Christian and beginning to fight for this country, that's when I became a terrorist!” he complained to Savage.

Having restored Shoebat’s credentials, Savage and his guest delved into the hidden motives of the Boston conspirators, from the Al Qaeda-linked Saudi bomber to the government enablers who supposedly let him off the hook. “Has Obama literally deracinated the FBI and other intelligence agencies with a thought process that literally must cut off when it comes to Islam and terror, that they will never find the actual perpetrators?” Savage wondered.

“When it comes to Obama, I have to ask, why is his family so involved with the Wahhabi apparatus? And that's his family in Kenya,” Shoebat said, claiming that Obama’s Kenyan cousin, Musa Ismail Obama, was secretly funding students to study at Wahhabist academies in Saudi Arabia. He added that Huma Abedin, the longtime assistant to Hillary Clinton and wife of Anthony Weiner, was another key link between the Wahhabi terror apparatus and the Obama administration -- Shoebat has alternately described her as stealth operative for Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood and Saudi Wahhabists. (On his personal website, Shoebat claimed [12] “Huma’s mother [is] part of a plot reminiscent of Hitler’s Nazi Germany.”)

Wondering why Obama refused to “cop” to being a Muslim, Savage warned of radical Islamic influence “at the FBI level, the CIA level, presidential level, military – everybody!”

Indeed, the entire government was run by dupes for Islam, all united, wittingly or not, in a Saudi-orchestrated plot to place America under the control of Shariah law. And it all started with gun control. “Al Qaeda is in favor of gun control in America,” Savage remarked to Shoebat. “Why?”

“It’s very simple,” he explained. “If people are disarmed, they’re easily occupied, they’re easily conquered. Because the American system itself begins with harassment of people like me and you by Muslims against non-Muslims… If you don’t think they will execute people in this country – there are many cases of executions by Islamists against Americans in this country.”

According to Shoebat, the most dangerous type of Islamic terrorist was not the open extremist determined to kill Americans, but the stealth operative. For this character, the progressive movement is the ultimate Trojan Horse. “Islam is a socialist system, not conservative,” Shoebat explained. “Islam is pro-evolution. This tickles the year of all the liberals.” To illustrate his point, Shoebat pointed to “anti-Israel demonstrations” where “gays, lesbians, leftists, communists, and Muslims hold hands.”

Who do homosexuals ally themselves with “people who want to kill them?” Savage asked his guest.

“The homosexual movement finds in Islam, ghelmaniya, which is pedophilia, having sex with boys,” Shoebat said, referring to a practice explicitly banned in Islam. “In fact, many of the Islamic caliphs had sex with boys… Pedophilia in Islam is overwhelming.”

Having painstakingly detailed the Saudi-CIA-Obama-gay-communist plot to Islamicize America, Savage seemed overcome with delight.

“Your knowledge is so soothingly real,” he told Shoebat, “that I don't care where it leads us.”
