But that project — the Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Repository — has been tied up in permitting red-tape and politics, as Nevada’s elected leaders have aimed to protect their state from catastrophe if something goes wrong. Pressured by powerful then-U.S. Sen. Harry Reid, a Nevada Democrat, the Obama administration stopped funding for the Yucca Mountain project’s license in 2010.</p><div class="odd-unitcontainercontainer" style="box-sizing: inherit; font-family: "Founders Grotesk Bold", "Helvetica Neue", Calibri, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18px;" /><p style="box-sizing: inherit; font-family: "Founders Grotesk", "Helvetica Neue", Calibri, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 1.222em; line-height: 1.42; max-width: 720px; margin: 1.45em auto; padding: 0px 20px;">But Reid is gone. And President Trump’s Department of Energy has expressed interest in restarting research and development at Yucca Mountain. Seeing an opening, Illinois Republican Rep. John Shimkus, chair of the Environment Subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, has plowed ahead with a bill passed through the House that would bring Yucca Mountain much closer to opening its doors.</p><p style="box-sizing: inherit; font-family: "Founders Grotesk", "Helvetica Neue", Calibri, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 1.222em; line-height: 1.42; max-width: 720px; margin: 1.45em auto; padding: 0px 20px;">But another Nevada senator is standing in the way. This time, it’s U.S. Sen. Dean Heller, a Republican, who has pledged that Nevada will never be the nation’s nuclear waste dumping ground.</p><p style="box-sizing: inherit; font-family: "Founders Grotesk", "Helvetica Neue", Calibri, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 1.222em; line-height: 1.42; max-width: 720px; margin: 1.45em auto; padding: 0px 20px;">“Under my watch, I will not let one more hard-earned taxpayer dollar go toward this failed project,” Heller said in<a href="https://www.heller.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/2018/5/heller-blasts-house-panel-for-advancing-yucca-mountain-funds" target="_blank" style="box-sizing: inherit; font-weight: 700; position: relative; margin: 0.67em 0px; transition: all 0.6s cubic-bezier(0.19, 1, 0.22, 1) 0s; text-decoration-line: none; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); padding: 0px 0.15em; border-bottom: 3px solid rgb(255, 215, 0);"> a statement</a> this spring. “Yucca Mountain is dead; it is that simple.”</p><p style="box-sizing: inherit; font-family: "Founders Grotesk", "Helvetica Neue", Calibri, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 1.222em; line-height: 1.42; max-width: 720px; margin: 1.45em auto; padding: 0px 20px;">In a Washington rarity, something trumped partisanship: geography. Illinois has more nuclear waste than any other state, and Shimkus is prepared to fire on members of his own party if it means winning the fight to get nuclear waste out.</p><p style="box-sizing: inherit; font-family: "Founders Grotesk", "Helvetica Neue", Calibri, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 1.222em; line-height: 1.42; max-width: 720px; margin: 1.45em auto; padding: 0px 20px;">“When it was Obama and Reid, I could do some righteous anger, partisan-wise,” Shimkus said. “But now it’s [Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch] McConnell and [Republican House Speaker] Paul Ryan."</p><p style="box-sizing: inherit; font-family: "Founders Grotesk", "Helvetica Neue", Calibri, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 1.222em; line-height: 1.42; max-width: 720px; margin: 1.45em auto; padding: 0px 20px;">Without a permanent solution for storing nuclear waste -- which is dangerous some 10,000 years after it’s considered spent fuel -- the nuclear plants themselves store the waste onsite, in so-called concrete “casks,” arranged on the edges of properties. That spent nuclear fuel is piled up in more than 80 locations across the country.</p><div class="odd-unitcontainercontainer" style="box-sizing: inherit; font-family: "Founders Grotesk Bold", "Helvetica Neue", Calibri, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18px;" /><p style="box-sizing: inherit; font-family: "Founders Grotesk", "Helvetica Neue", Calibri, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 1.222em; line-height: 1.42; max-width: 720px; margin: 1.45em auto; padding: 0px 20px;">At a nuclear power plant outside Rockford, Illinois, Shimkus said his state of 13 million people shouldn’t bear the risk of radioactive waste.</p><p style="box-sizing: inherit; font-family: "Founders Grotesk", "Helvetica Neue", Calibri, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 1.222em; line-height: 1.42; max-width: 720px; margin: 1.45em auto; padding: 0px 20px;">“If [casks] stay here, they'll stay here forever,” Shimkus said from the Byron Generating Station, about 100 miles from Chicago. “And the nuclear regulatory commission says these [casks] are safe.</p><p style="box-sizing: inherit; font-family: "Founders Grotesk", "Helvetica Neue", Calibri, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 1.222em; line-height: 1.42; max-width: 720px; margin: 1.45em auto; padding: 0px 20px;">“But it's only safe for about 40 or 50 years. Let's find a permanent repository. If completed, Yucca Mountain will be safe for this type of storage for a million years.”</p><div><div><font face="Times New Roman" size="4">=</font></div><div><font face="Times New Roman" size="4">krugman/cody f</font></div><div><font face="Times New Roman" size="4">
</font></div><div><font face="Times New Roman" size="4" /><div><font face="Times New Roman" size="4"><font face="Times New Roman" size="4"><font face="Times New Roman" size="4"><font face="Times New Roman" size="4">...For those of us who have long covered health care policy, it's been a mind-boggling turn of events. Republicans, who have always played a losing hand by arguing for the unpopular and wrongheaded idea that there should be more free-market principles applied in health care, are now literally saying one thing and doing the other.</font></font></font></font></div><div>
</div><div>Many GOP candidates are insisting — vociferously — that they are in favor of protecting people with pre-existing conditions — even while the party does its best to dismantle all the protections for people with pre-existing that are at the core of Obamacare.</div><div>
</div><div>"Indeed, 20 Republican state attorneys general filed a lawsuit trying to eliminate protection for pre-existing conditions, and the Trump administration has declined to oppose the suit, in effect endorsing it," Krugman noted. "Now, you might imagine that Republicans would respond to the manifest unpopularity of their health care position by, you know, actually changing their position. But that would be hopelessly old-fashioned. As I said, what they’ve chosen to do instead is lie, insisting that black is white and up is down."</div><div>
</div><div>He continued:</div><div>
</div><div>Thus Josh Hawley, as Missouri’s attorney general, is part of that lawsuit against Obamacare’s regulation of insurers; but in his campaign for the Senate, he’s posing as a defender of Americans with pre-existing conditions.<b> Dean Heller, running for re-election to the Senate in Nevada, voted for a bill that would have destroyed Obamacare, including all protection for pre-existing conditions; but he’s misrepresenting himself just like Hawley is.</b></div><div>
</div><div>
</div><div>And they aren’t just lying about their own position. They’re also lying about their opponents’. Incredibly, Republicans have spent the years since passage of the A.C.A. accusing Democrats of wanting to destroy Medicare.</div><div>
</div><div>And of course, this week saw the publication of Trump's op-ed attacking Medicare-for-All, in which, as the Washington Post explained, “Almost every sentence contained a misleading statement or a falsehood.”</div><div>
</div><div>If they wanted to, Republicans could try to convince the American people that their view that the health insurance industry should be less regulated, not more, is correct. Or they could, in the face of the facts and the wild unpopularity of their position, either change their minds or simply leave the issue alone and focus on other topics they care about.</div><div>
</div><div>But they've realized Trump has had a lot of success lying to voters faces while stabbing them in the back. And, to top it off, he gratuitously smears Democrats with obvious falsehoods. That's been his consistent strategy, and now the whole party has adopted it as its own.</div></div><div><font face="Times New Roman" size="4"></font></div></div><div>===</div>

<h2><span class="mw-headline" id="Biography">Biography</span></h2>
<p>Having grown up in Carson City, Nevada, Heller graduated from the University of Southern California in 1985. He then worked as a stockbroker before being elected to the Nevada state legislature in 1990. In 1994, he was elected Nevada's Secretary of State, a post to which he was re-elected in 1998 and 2002. He and his wife Lynn have four children. <a rel="nofollow" class="external autonumber" href="http://www.deanheller.com/biography/">[1]</a></p>
<h3><span class="mw-headline" id="Nevada.27s_Electronic_Voting_Machines">Nevada's Electronic Voting Machines</span></h3>
<p>As Nevada's Secretary of State, Dean Heller decided to tap the knowledge of the Nevada Gaming Control Authority when deciding upon an electronic voting system for Nevada. They had an extensive background and knowledge for assuring that electronic gaming devices are operating correctly. Following the review, the state went with a touchscreen system from <a rel="nofollow" class="external text" href="http://www.sequoiavote.com/democenter.php">Sequoia Voting Systems</a>, but only after a voter-verified paper trail had been installed on the machines.<a href="http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Dean_Heller#cite_note-0">[1]</a> Sequoia's name for this version of voting machine is <a rel="nofollow" class="external text" href="http://www.sequoiavote.com/productguide.php?product=AVC%20Edge&type=Introduction">AVC Edge® with VeriVote Printer</a>.
Nevada was the only state in 2004 to use electronic voting machines with a paper trail backup for a statewide election.<a href="http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Dean_Heller#cite_note-1">[2]</a> The election was generally smooth and organized with few problems.<a href="http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Dean_Heller#cite_note-2">[3]</a></p>
<p>
However, the statement above is not entirely true. During the 2004 election in which George W. Bush narrowly defeated John Kerry in Nevada, over 51% of the votes in Nevada were counted on 11 year old Sequoias that were not "retrofitted" as promised by Sequoia with printers in time for that election. By the 2006 election, some of those old machines were finally "printer ready" and were at precincts where voters were given a choice to vote on the old machines or the new ones that came with printers. The old machines were involved in previous elections and were impossible to verify the votes on as they only tallied totals of each precinct and there was no way to verify individual votes.</p>
