Scorched States, Where Heat Kills Workers / Media and Immigration Narratives
first half of the show, cohost Eleanor Goldfield speaks with Juley Fulcher — attorney and worker health and safety advocate for Public Citizen’s Congress watch division — about her recent report, Scorched States, an expose of the inadequate or wholly lacking protections for workers facing extreme heat in the age of climate chaos. Juley describes the legislative morass standing in the way of workers’ rights and how states like Florida and Texas have actually made it illegal to protect workers.

Student filmed and produced, :{United States of Distraction: Fighting The Fake News Invasion:(style="outline:none;margin:0px;padding:0px;color:#c6390d;;text-decoration-line:none;cursor:pointer"):}: chronicles critical media literacy scholars, students, and journalists that provide contextual analysis for understanding the current rise of the so-called “fake news” phenomenon. In addition to deconstructing fake news, the film reminds us that this current wave of disinformation is not a new development, but rather, a form of propaganda. The interviews provided in the film offer solutions for mitigating the pernicious influence of false content on America’s democratic institutions. Edited and narrated by Abby Martin, with direction from Nolan Higdon, Mickey Huff, and Andy Lee Roth.

I interview Danny Haiphong, activist and writer for the Black Agenda Report about his new book "American Exceptionalism and American Innocence, A People's History of Fake News from The Revolutionary War to the War on Terror." His book is about the myths that the US uses to colonize, displace, exploit in this country and around the world. Human rights, humanitarianism, meritocracy, democracy, liberty, freedom. We talk black internationalism, the prosecution and persecution of the Black Panthers, Obama as a Trojan Horse, miliarism in sports and movies and the possibility of transformative change with a Sanders presidency.

“In a plutocracy,” says Nader, “commercialism dominates far beyond the realm of economics and business; everything is for sale, and money is power. But in an authentic democracy, there must be commercial-free zones where the power of human rights, citizenship, community, equality, and justice are free from the corrupting influence of money.”9 Since Reagan, those zones have been under constant attack....
Over nearly five decades, commercial influence over the production and distribution of information and knowledge has adversely impacted the public-interest value of media and education. Political literacy and civic agency as ethical manifestations of the common good have been deliberately degraded. Donald Trump’s arc from television celebrity to commander in chief of the U.S. military, with a direct propaganda feed to 55.5 million voluntary followers, was made possible through this degradation—and a media system openly willing to profit from it, even though it “may not be good for America.” In addition to his plutocratic agenda...
In addition to chronic lying, another Orwellian aspect of Trump’s authoritarianism has been the censoring of certain words and phrases in government departments and agencies, particularly in the Department of Health and Human Services. Officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, for example, were given a list of seven words and phrases that could not be used in budget documents. These were “entitlement,” “diversity,” “vulnerable,” “evidence-based,” “science-based,” “fetus,” and “transgender.” Officials were instructed to use the term “Obamacare,” and never refer to the Affordable Care Act or ACA, a transparent effort to politically stigmatize the program and those Americans who benefit from it. Even the State Department was ordered to stop using the term “sex education” and to substitute “sexual risk avoidance.” This ban is part of the Trump administration’s campaign on Capitol Hill to stress premarital abstinence as the primary form of national health advocacy on the matter. Censorship at the Department of State could ultimately translate into less funding for maternal health and abortions, according to the vice president and director of global health and HIV policy at the Kaiser Family Foundation.11
...
That noted, Trump’s ongoing war on truth, language, openness, and the free press is incompatible to an unprecedented degree with the mission of American government to operate openly and accountably as a democracy. Attacking journalists as “enemies of the American people . . . gives aid and comfort to present-day officials and lawmakers who want to avoid being held publicly accountable for their acts,”20 says Arnold Isaacs, a former editor of the Baltimore Sun. Such attacks, coming from an office of such enormous responsibility and power, serve to normalize aggression and intolerance toward those who question and criticize authority; they serve to corrupt the ethical foundation necessary for a republic. How did we get to this point? Trump did not commercialize society, but his team strategically used commercial mechanisms to manipulate the public and take power. Trump homed in on public vulnerabilities created by decades of pro-corporate influence and policy. Trump, a fourteen-season television game-show character, leveraged his rise on the centrality of America’s pervasive entertainment culture, increasingly hyper-partisan narratives, frag- mented media landscape, and ineffective education system. He has deftly manipulated the press, exploited potential voters, and lied with nearly complete impunity. It is worth noting that Trump tapped into other cultural vulnerabilities that had existed well before America’s corporate age, such as its long history of white supremacy, misogyny, homophobia, xenophobia, and nationalism.
However, this book addresses the public vulnerabilities caused by the impact of corporate interests on U.S. educational and mass media systems, and how and why such interests enabled Trump’s self-serving messaging to be so effective. Trump can be seen as the temporary face of an increasingly invasive corporate algorithm, one that views civil liberties, the public interest, the commons, and the democracy-centered institutions mandated to serve them as enemy forces to be administratively “deconstructed.” The algorithm unifies by distraction and extraction—distracting the population from the common good and the civic agency required to defend it, while extracting data, resources, and power from the public sector and transferring them to the private sector—a euphemism for the rich. In the process, the United States increasingly drifts toward becoming an authoritarian society in which government represents and protects the interests of the wealthy few. As corporations succeed in replacing the notion of a “citizen” with that of a “consumer,” their power concentrates, producing characters like Donald Trump...

p philips trans nat book
*Giants: The Global Power Elite* follows in the tradition of C. Wright Mills’s work the Power Elite in 1956. Like Mills, I am seeking to bring a consciousness of power networks affecting our lives and the state of society to the broader public. Mills described how the power elite were those “who decide whatever is decided” of major consequence. Sixty-two years later power elites have globalized and built institutions for preserving and protecting capital investments everywhere in the world.
Central to the idea of a globalized power elite is the concept of a transnational capitalist class theorized in academic literature for some 20 years. Giantsreviews the transition from nation-state power elites, as described by Mills, to a transnational power elite centralized on the control of global capital around the world. The global power elite function as a non-governmental network of similarly educated, wealthy people with common interests of managing, and protecting concentrated global wealth and insuring its continued growth. Global power elites influence and use international institutions controlled by governmental authorities like the World Bank, International Monetary Fund (IMF), NATO, World Trade Association (WTO), G-7, G-20, and others. These world governmental institutions receive instructions and recommendations for policy actions from networks of non-governmental global power elite organizations and associations.
The global 1% comprise over 36 million millionaires, and 2,400 billionaires who employ their excess capital with investment management firms like BlackRock and JPMorgan Chase. The top 17 of these trillion-dollar investment management firms—which I call the Giants— controlled $41.1 trillion dollars in 2017. These firms are all directly invested in each other and managed by only 199 people who decide how and where global capital will be invested. Their biggest problem is that they have more capital than there are safe investment opportunities, which leads to risky speculative investments, increased war spending, and the privatization of the public commons.
My research effort was to identify the most important networks of the global power elite and the individuals therein. I name and provide biographies for over 300 people, who are the core members of power networks that manage, facilitate and protect global capital. The global power elites are the activist core of the transnational capitalist class—1% of the world’s wealthy people. They serve the uniting function of providing ideological justifications for their shared interests through the corporate media and they establish the parameters of needed actions for implementation by transnational governmental organizations and capitalist nation-states.
The global power elites, who direct the world’s corporate giants, overlap with the leadership of organizations such as the Council of Thirty, the Trilateral Commission, and the Atlantic Council. These privately-funded nongovernmental organizations provide direct instruction and policy recommendation to governments, international institutions, the G-7 and their intelligence agencies, and other top capitalist countries. The US/NATO military empire operates in nearly every country of the world to protect global capital and the wealthy 1%.
The global power elite are self-aware of their existence as a numerical minority in the vast sea of impoverished humanity. Roughly, 80% of the world’s population lives on less than ten dollars a day and half live on less than three dollars a day.
This concentration of protected wealth leads to a crisis of humanity, whereby poverty, war, starvation, mass alienation, media propaganda, and environmental devastation are reaching levels that threaten our species’ future. Organizing resistance and challenging the global power elite should be foremost on the agendas of democracy movements everywhere, now and in the near future. Addressing top-down economic controls, monopolistic power, and the specifics of the global power elites’ activities will require challenging mobilizations and social movements worldwide.
The act of identifying the global power elite by name may persuade some of them to recognize their own humanity and take corrective action to save the world. Global power elites are probably the only ones capable of correcting this crisis without major civil unrest, war, and chaos. My book, Giants, is an effort to bring a consciousness of the importance of systemic change and redistribution of wealth to the 99% and the global power elites themselves, in the hope that we can collectively begin the process of saving humanity. In that effort, I highly recommend using the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as a moral base to offer a united thread of consciousness for all seeking human betterment. Humankind deserves nothing less.

Project Censored cordially invites you to the The Media Freedom Summit 2.0: Critical Media Literacy for Social Justice, to be held at College of Marin (COM) just north of San Francisco on October 26-27, 2018. The Summit will be an opportunity for journalists, students, faculty, activists, and community members to identify and address crucial threats to media freedom, to learn about and share effective strategies for advancing media freedom, and to promote critical media literacy education in service of social justice, civic engagement, and positive, meaningful change in local communities and larger society. Facilitators will lead discussion sections whose findings will be published in an essay that expresses the goals for media freedom and approaches for critical media education to foster social justice and equity. This event will adopt more of an un-conference approach in that we expect presentations to be interactive and inclusive of both presenters and attendees. We intend to use the conversation cafe model to engage all participants in the process based on the group agreements: www.conversationcafe.org.
