Heritage Foundation president Kevin Roberts argues “there ought to be certain restrictions against not just religions, but particular political implementations of religions”
Roberts: “I'm talking about Islamism and some of the head coverings that are political statements more than they are honoring religious traditions”

KEVIN ROBERTS (GUEST): I would also encourage the president when it comes to immigration, to come back to that, to really double down on the importance of assimilation, the importance of wanting to be an American beyond getting the certificate that you're an American citizen, and to embrace what many of us have argued for decades, which is that the best way to be a pro-immigration country is to have laws that require immigrants to assimilate.
English should be the official language. We should have these mass deportations. You should break the back of these sanctuary cities, counties, and states. If that's something that needs to wait until January because of midterm considerations, that's fine. It just needs to happen. Not just because it's good, but also because we will in this movement strain credulity with our base if we don't deliver on that.
Americans want their country back, and I can think of no president, certainly in modern history, who better embodies the desire to do that than Donald Trump.
ALLIE BETH STUCKEY (HOST): Yeah, and that's a top issue for me, of course, I'm a big culture war girl. The things that I see is creation order issues, abortion, gender, marriage, those are going to be top. But other than that, crime, immigration. And like I'm just the suburban mom, but those are the things I really see affecting my community and it's not just, it's not only illegal immigration and this is where I think the conversation has shifted on the right in a good way.
I just don't know the solution for it is that people are saying, yes, illegal immigration, number one, but also, it doesn't seem like our legal immigration is really prioritizing American interests. And when people see their communities, the neighborhoods that they grew up in, completely shift and when people see churches turning into mosques, I think most Americans are uncomfortable saying it, but there's something unsettling about it.
And I don't know that many voters know how to articulate what our goal is or what we want, but something just doesn't seem just, and I haven't heard a whole lot of politicians be able to say there's a solution for that. So what do you think about it?
ROBERTS: Well, I will say, and not just for me, but from all of us at Heritage, I'm not uncomfortable saying it. It's a travesty. We ought not have this plethora of mosques being built anywhere. We ought not tolerate at any level of government what is at least the partial implementation of Sharia law. And I'm not holding President Trump responsible for that. I actually think he's going to get onto that issue, but I want to encourage him there.
I think that what we've learned now that we have closed the southern border, you know, almost a small political miracle if you will, is that we can move on to the next order of questions, and that is, what does it mean to be an American? What does it mean to be a citizen, and not just in a legal sense, but in a social and cultural sense to, to be part of your neighborhood, your community, right?
Well, at the very least, it means you ought to speak English and English ought to be our official language.
It also means that while of course we will honor religious liberty that there ought to be certain restrictions against not just religions but particular political implementations of religions. I'm talking about Islamism and some of the head coverings that are political statements more than they are honoring religious traditions.
We have to understand that this country was based on principles that came from Jerusalem, Athens, Rome, London, and Philadelphia. We are both Judeo and Christian in our founding.
That doesn't mean that there isn't room for other people, but it does mean that it's possible in a country that is so generous toward immigrants that we might have too many people from the wrong places.
You know my Christian faith, I believe as it is demanded of me because of my faith that every human person is equal in the eyes of God. A nation state can believe that and also because it believes it, say, that legal immigration should be so restricted as to be able to perpetuate the best parts of that society, right?

Some conservative women who were prominent figures in the Republican Party in the past — columnist and former Nancy Reagan speechwriter Mona Charen, conservative pollster and organizer Sarah Longwell, former Rep. Barbara Comstock (R-Virginia), among many others — now feel estranged from conservatism and are firmly in the Never Trump camp. But their absence from the center of the GOP and much of the right-wing media is giving MAGA women an opening on the far right.
In an article published on January 28, The Guardian's Alaina Demopoulos takes a look at some mothers who have become prominent MAGA influencers: Riley Gaines and Allie Beth Stuckey. And one of their talking points is that "compassion" and "empathy" detrimental to the MAGA movement and to fundamentalist evangelical Christianity.
Demopoulos' article comes at a time when Minneapolis and other U.S. cities are being targeted by the Trump Administration for aggressive immigration raids. And Gaines and Stuckey, according to the Guardian journalist, are saying that compassion must not be allowed to distract MAGA from its goals.
"Gaines is one of the leading figures of the 'Womanosphere' movement: mostly white Christian conservatives who promote an anti-feminist, gender-essentialist agenda to their followers, and who have been parroting the Trump Administration's messaging that ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) has done a good, moral job in its brutal crackdown on immigrant communities," Demopoulos explains. "Any evidence proving otherwise is wrong, warped or fabricated, they insist…. Allie Beth Stuckey, a conservative podcaster and author, is another such figure beating the drum for ICE."
Stuckey is the author of the 2024 book "Toxic Empathy: How Progressives Exploit Christian Compassion." And the argument that "compassion" and "empathy" are bad, according to Demopoulos, is a recurring theme from Stuckey and others in the Womansphere.
According to former evangelical April Ajoy, a demand for ideological purity is another characteristic of the 'Womanosphere'.
Ajoy told The Guardian, "If you are not fully in line with every single position (that Womanosphere figures promote), then you can get ostracized from your community. That’s what happened to me."

When former President George W. Bush described himself as a "compassionate conservative" during his eight years in the White House, some far-fight pundits objected to the "compassionate" part. Bush, they argued, was hurting conservatism when he called himself "compassionate," and they believed the right needed to purge itself of "compassion sickness."
The term "compassion sickness" isn't as popular in right-wing media as it was during the 2000s, but the concept is alive and well. Tesla/SpaceX/X.com leader Elon Musk considers "suicidal empathy" a major threat to the United States' wellbeing.
That term is closely identified with Musk. But in an article published on December 1, Salon's Amanda Marcotte stresses that the far right's use of "empathy" as an insult originated with evangelical Christian fundamentalist podcaster Allie Beth Stuckey.
"As with much of the asinine ponderings coming from the Silicon Valley billionaire class," Marcotte explains, "there's a pseudo-intellectual rationale to prop up this nonsense. Musk got this 'suicidal empathy' language from Gad Saad, a Canadian college professor who falsely presents himself as an 'evolutionary behavioral scientist'… But I'm not here to debate Musk and Saad's self-serving delusions. More interesting is that while they have tried to frame this anti-empathy discourse in faux-scientific and masculinized rhetoric, the right's modern war on empathy really began with a woman."
Marcotte continues, "Unlike Saad and Musk, fundamentalist Christian influencer Allie Beth Stuckey doesn't see empathy as a failure of evolution. As a creationist who denies the scientific reality of prehistoric dinosaurs, she doesn't even believe in evolution. And even though she believes the Bible forbids women from being pastors, Stuckey has made it her mission to rewrite the teachings of Jesus so that her savior is a harsh disciplinarian whose 'love' has little to do with empathy."
"Phyllis Schlafly knock-off" Stuckey, according to Marcotte, has been railing against "empathy" for at least three years on her "Relatable" podcast.
"Stuckey's book 'Toxic Empathy: How Progressives Exploit Christian Compassion' came out in late 2024," Marcotte observes, "but the idea for it appears to have originated on a 2022 episode of her popular podcast 'Relatable.' She hadn't yet come up with the catchphrase 'toxic empathy' — which, in true trolling style, appropriates the progressive use of the term 'toxic' to describe unhealthy and cruel behavior — but her basic argument is right there…. In a sense, she is simply reworking a longstanding argument from the Christian Right that kindness and compassion are not what Jesus meant by 'love.'"
Marcotte adds, "To the contrary, true Christian love is what looks, to most people, like beating someone into submission…. This line of thought has always been the paper-thin rationale for bigotry and abuse. But Stuckey's sinister genius was in using her gender to make these tired gambits seem fresh and modern."

The word "empathy" usually has a positive connotation. But during an interview with vodcast host Joe Rogan in February, Tesla/SpaceX/X.com head Elon Musk railed against "suicidal empathy" and declared, "The fundamental weakness of western civilization is empathy, the empathy exploit."
Musk's critics were quick to pounce, arguing that his disdain for "empathy" underscores the lack of compassion that plagues the far right and President Donald Trump's MAGA movement.
Musk, however, isn't the only one who claims that "empathy" is a bad thing.

In an article published on August 21, Associated Press (AP) reporter Tiffany Stanley takes a look at far-right white evangelical Christian fundamentalists who "are preaching that" empathy "has become a vice."
Allie Beth Stuckey, author of the 2024 book "Toxic Empathy: How Progressives Exploit Christian Compassion" and host of the podcast "Relatable," told AP, "Empathy becomes toxic when it encourages you to affirm sin, validate lies or support destructive policies."
Another anti-empathy book is evangelical pastor Joe Rigney's "The Sin of Empathy: Compassion and its Counterfeits."
According to Stanley, the "anti-empathy arguments" coming from Stuckey, Rigney and others "gained traction in the early months of President Donald Trump’s second term."

But not all Christians are buying into the anti-empathy arguments coming from white evangelicals and MAGA Republicans.
Historian Susan Lanzoni, a graduate of Harvard Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, told AP that empathy is "the whole message of Jesus."
The Rev. Canon Dana Colley Corsello of the Washington National Cathedral takes issue with the evangelical anti-empathy trend as well.
Corsello told AP, "Empathy is at the heart of Jesus’ life and ministry…. It’s so troubling that this is even up for debate."

Today, we’re joined by Lucy Biggers, former climate influencer for Now This and producer of a viral 2018 AOC campaign video, to share her dramatic shift from progressive activism to rejecting climate alarmism and socialism. Lucy reveals how marriage, motherhood, and the events of 2020 reshaped her views, exposing the anti-human myths of the climate movement. We dive into her regrets over amplifying Standing Rock, the hypocrisy of socialist policies like Zohran Mamdani’s, and why she now champions human flourishing over guilt-driven ideology.
