They were certainly useful. In particularly, the connection with the difficulties faced by evolutionists in debates vs. creationists proved to be very a propos. Our side played it it pretty straight – the basic IPCC line (Richard Somerville), commentary on the how ‘scientized’ political debates abuse science (me, though without using the word ‘scientized’!) and the projections and potential solutions (Brenda Ekwurzel). <b>Crichton went with the crowd-pleasing condemnation of private jet-flying liberal</b>s – very popular, even among the private jet-flying Eastsiders present) and the apparent hypocrisy of people who think that global warming is a problem using any energy at all. Lindzen used his standard presentation – CO2 will be trivial effect, no one knows anything about aerosols, sensitivity from the 20th Century is tiny, and by the way global warming stopped in 1998. Stott is a bit of a force of nature and essentially accused anyone who thinks global warming is a problem of explicitly rooting for misery and poverty in the third world. He also brought up the whole cosmic ray issue as the next big thing in climate science.</font></p><p style="line-height: 18px; letter-spacing: 0px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);"><font face="Times New Roman" size="4">

Entertainment-wise it’s hard to blame them. Crichton is extremely polished and Stott has a touch of the revivalist preacher about him. Comparatively, we were pretty dull.</font></p><p style="line-height: 18px; letter-spacing: 0px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);"><font face="Times New Roman" size="4">I had started off with a thought that<b> Lindzen and Stott,</b> in particular, would avoid the more specious pseudo-scientific claims they’ve used in other fora since there were people who would seriously challenge them at this debate. In the event, they stuck very closely to their standard script. Lindzen used the ‘GW stopped in 1998′ argument which even Crichton acknowledged later was lame. He also used the ‘aerosols are completely uncertain’ but ‘sensitivity to CO2 from the 20th Century is precisely defined’ in adjoining paragraphs without any apparent cognitive dissonance. Stott didn’t use the medieval English vineyards meme (as he did in <a href="http://www.realclimate.org/index.php/archives/2007/03/swindled/">TGGWS</a>) – but maybe he read <a href="http://www.realclimate.org/index.php/archives/2006/07/medieval-warmth-and-english-wine/">the RC article</a> ahead of time.</font></p><p style="line-height: 18px; letter-spacing: 0px;"><font face="Times New Roman" style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 102);" size="4">The Q&A was curious since most questions were very much of the ‘I read the Wall Street Journal editorial page’ style, and I thought we did okay, except possibly when I suggested to the audience that the cosmic ray argument was being used to fool them, which didn’t go over well – no-one likes being told they’re being had (especially when they are). My bad.</font></p><p style="line-height: 18px; letter-spacing: 0px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);"><font face="Times New Roman" size="4">The organisers asked us afterwards whether we’d have done much different in hindsight. Looking back, the answer is mostly no. We are scientists, and we talk about science and we’re not going start getting into questions of personal morality and wider political agendas – and obviously that put us at a sharp disadvantage (shades of <a href="http://pining.blogspot.com/2006/10/david-mamet-on-winning-through-lying.html">David Mamet</a>?).</font></p><p style="line-height: 18px; letter-spacing: 0px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);"><font face="Times New Roman" size="4"><b>One minor detail that might be interesting is that the organisers put on luxury SUVs for the participants to get to the restaurant – 5 blocks away. None of our side used them (preferring to walk), but all of the other side di</b>d.</font></p><p style="line-height: 18px; letter-spacing: 0px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);"><font face="Times New Roman" size="4"><b>So are such debates worthwhile? On balance, I’d probably answer no (regardless of the outcome).</b> The time constraints preclude serious examination of any points of controversy and the number of spurious talking points can seriously overwhelm the ability of others to rebut them. Taking a ‘meta’ approach (as I attempted) is certainly not a guaranteed solution. However, this live audience were a rather select bunch, and so maybe this will go over differently on the radio. There it might not matter that Crichton is so tall…</font></p></div></div><p><span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);"><font face="Times New Roman" size="4">- See more at: http://www.realclimate.org/index.php/archives/2007/03/adventures-on-the-east-side/#sthash.KWdbmqPZ.dpuf</font></span></p><p><font face="Times New Roman" size="4">===</font></p><h1><a href="http://thinkprogress.org/climate/2009/11/25/205020/competitive-enterprise-institute-to-sue-realclimate-blogger-over-moderation-policy/"><font size="4" color="#000000" face="Times New Roman">Competitive Enterprise Institute to sue RealClimate blogger over moderation policy</font></a></h1>

<blockquote><p><font face="Times New Roman" size="4">Gavin Schmidt has done a wonderful job at RealClimate <a href="http://www.realclimate.org/index.php/archives/2009/11/the-cru-hack/">patiently explaining the context of the stolen emails</a>.
He’s made it perfectly clear that the claims of scientific malpractice
are without foundation. He must be doing a really good job, because the <a href="http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Competitive_Enterprise_Institute">Competitive Enterprise Institute</a> intends to <a rel="nofollow" href="http://pajamasmedia.com/blog/competitive-enterprise-institute-sues-nasa-in-wake-of-climategate-scandal/2/">sue him</a>.</font></p></blockquote>
<p><font face="Times New Roman" size="4">That’s computer scientist Tim Lambert aka Deltoid explaining (<a href="http://scienceblogs.com/deltoid/2009/11/competitive_enterprise_institu.php">here</a>)
the latest tactics the anti-scientific disinformers are pursuing to
stifle real climate scientists from communicating with the public. The
CEI, of course, runs <a title="Permanent Link: CEI campaigns to destroy the climate for centuries" rel="bookmark" href="http://climateprogress.org/2009/10/15/2009/08/31/2008/03/12/cei-campaigns-to-destroy-the-climate-for-centuries/">ad campaigns aimed at destroying the climate for centuries</a>; generally spreads disinformation (see “<a title="Permanent Link to Santer, Jones, and Schneider respond to CEI's phony attack on the temperature record" rel="bookmark" href="http://climateprogress.org/2009/10/15/phil-jones-ben-santer-stephen-schneider-respond-to-competitive-enterprise-institute-deniers/">Santer, Jones, and Schneider respond to CEI’s phony attack on the temperature record</a>“) and embraces the efforts of other groups to sow confusion (see “<a title="Permanent Link to Deniers go ape for Scopes climate trial, Inhofe quotes John Stuart Mill " rel="bookmark" href="http://climateprogress.org/2009/08/31/deniers-chamber-of-commerce-scopes-monkey-trial-global-warming-chris-horner-cei-planet-gore-inhofe/">Deniers go ape for Scopes climate trial</a>“).</font>
<font face="Times New Roman" size="4">But CEI’s current tactics, which they proudly announce <a href="http://pajamasmedia.com/blog/competitive-enterprise-institute-sues-nasa-in-wake-of-climategate-scandal/">here</a>, have become truly extemist in nature:</font>
<font face="Times New Roman" size="4"><span id="more-205020" /></font></p>
<blockquote><p><font face="Times New Roman" size="4">[CEI seeks documents] relating to the content,

<p><font face="Times New Roman" size="4">Lambert notes:</font></p>

course, the point of this vexatious suit isn’t to win — it’s to harass
and distract Schmidt because he is being effective.</font></strong>
<font face="Times New Roman" size="4">It’s not for nothing that I dubbed them the <span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 102);"><a href="http://scienceblogs.com/deltoid/2007/01/completely_evil_institute.php">Completely Evil Institute</a>.</span></font></p></blockquote>
<p><font face="Times New Roman" size="4">I would add that essentially every factual assertion in the above excerpt from the piece by CEI Fellow Chris Horner is false.</font>
<font face="Times New Roman" size="4">The disinformers are obsessed with the Hockey Stick analysis, even
though it is just the tiniest piece of our overall understanding of
climate science, which is getting increasingly dire by the day (see <a title="Permanent Link to Climate science statement from the Met Office, NERC and the Royal Society: It's the hottest decade on record and " for="" rel="bookmark" href="http://climateprogress.org/2009/11/24/climate-science-statement-from-the-met-office-nerc-and-the-royal-society-its-the-hottest-decade-on-record-and-even-since-the-2007-ipcc-assessment-the-evidence-for-dangerous-long-term-and-poten/">Climate
science statement from the Met Office, NERC and the Royal Society:
“even since the 2007 IPCC Assessment the evidence for dangerous,
long-term and potentially irreversible climate change has strengthened”</a>).</font>
<font face="Times New Roman" size="4">The ‘hockey stick’ was, in fact, essentially vindicated by the National Academy of Sciences (see <a href="http://www.realclimate.org/index.php/archives/2006/06/national-academies-synthesis-report/">NAS Report</a> and <a href="http://www.realclimate.org/index.php?s=hockey+stick&submit=Search">RealClimate.org</a>).
And more important than the fact that the original analysis was
defensibly correct, is that the conclusions were correct [which could be
true even if the analysis had flaws in it]. Is the planet now as hot
(or hotter) than it has been in a millenium? Try two millennia (see “<a title="Permanent Link to Sorry deniers, hockey stick gets longer, stronger: Earth hotter now than in past 2,000 years" rel="bookmark" href="http://climateprogress.org/2009/07/26/2008/09/03/sorry-deniers-hockey-stick-gets-longer-stronger-earth-hotter-now-than-in-past-2000-years/">Sorry deniers, hockey stick gets longer, stronger: Earth hotter now than in past 2,000 years</a>“). See also “<a title="Permanent Link to Human-caused Arctic warming overtakes 2,000 years of natural cooling, " rel="bookmark" href="http://climateprogress.org/2009/09/03/science-study-hockey-stick-human-caused-arctic-warming-overtakes-natural-cooling/">Human-caused Arctic warming overtakes 2,000 years of natural cooling, ‘seminal’ study finds</a>.” That’s why climatologist and one-time darling of the contrarians Ken Caldeira said last month, <a title="Permanent Link to Must-read AP story: Statisticians reject global cooling; Caldeira " rel="bookmark" href="http://climateprogress.org/2009/10/26/global-cooling-myth-statisticians-caldeira-superfreakonomics/">“To
talk about global cooling at the end of the hottest decade the planet
has experienced in many thousands of years is ridiculous.”</a></font>
<font face="Times New Roman" size="4">RealClimate was not started as an effort to defend the Hockey Stick,
but rather to “to provide a quick response to developing stories and
provide the context sometimes missing in mainstream commentary” on
climate science in general (see RC’s <a href="http://www.realclimate.org/index.php/archives/2004/12/about/">About page</a>). As for being “owned by the advocacy Environmental Media Services,” RealClimate explains patiently in its Disclaimer:</font></p>

<font face="Times New Roman" size="4"><b>Gavin Schmidt </b>is a <b>climate modeller </b>at the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York and is interested in modeling past, present and future climate. He works on developing and improving coupled climate models and, in particular, is interested in how their results can be compared to paleoclimatic proxy data. He has worked on assessing the climate response to multiple forcings, including solar irradiance, atmospheric chemistry, aerosols, and greenhouse gases.</font>
<font face="Times New Roman" size="4">He received a BA (Hons) in Mathematics from Oxford University, a PhD in Applied Mathematics from University College London and was a NOAA Postdoctoral Fellow in Climate and Global Change Research. He is a co-chair of the CLIVAR/PAGES Intersection Panel and is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Climate. He was cited by <em>Scientific American</em> as one of the 50 Research Leaders of 2004, and has worked on Education and Outreach with the American Museum of Natural History, the College de France and the New York Academy of Sciences. He has over 90 peer-reviewed publications and is the co-author with Josh Wolfe of “<a href="http://ghgphotos.com/picturingclimatechange/">Climate Change: Picturing the Science</a>” (W. W. Norton, 2009), a collaboration between climate scientists and photographers. He was awarded the inaugural AGU Climate Communications Prize in 2011.</font>

<h1 class="title"><font face="Times New Roman" size="4">Climate science attack group turns sights on Texas professors</font></h1>
<p><font face="Times New Roman" size="4"><b>The American Tradition Institute</b>, a conservative think tank with <a href="http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=American_Tradition_Institute#Funding-asserted_v._actual" rel="nofollow">financial ties to fossil fuel interests</a>, made headlines last year for a <a href="http://www.southernstudies.org/2011/10/special-investigation-whos-behind-the-information-attacks-on-climate-scientists.html" rel="nofollow">controversial freedom of information lawsuit</a> against the University of Virginia targeting former UVA professor and leading climate researcher Michael Mann, who's now at Penn State.</font>
<font face="Times New Roman" size="4">Now ATI's campaign to discredit mainstream climate science is targeting professors at two Texas universities -- and it's particularly interested in their communications with journalists.</font>
<font face="Times New Roman" size="4">ATI recently sent requests under the Texas Public Information Act to Texas A&M University seeking all emails to or from a university account used by Andrew Dessler (<em>photo at left</em>), a professor in the school's Department of Atmospheric Sciences whose research focuses on climate systems and climate change policy. As the Climate Science FOI report blog <a href="http://climscifoi.blogspot.com/2012/07/atihorner-targetting-texas-scientists.html" rel="nofollow">observed</a>,<b> ATI's requests were unrelated to scientific data.</b></font>
<font face="Times New Roman" size="4"> </font>
<font face="Times New Roman" size="4">The group's <a href="http://www.scribd.com/doc/99680945/Ati-Dessler-Txam-Foi-Request-i" rel="nofollow">initial request</a> for Dessler's emails was made on May 1, the day after the<span style=" background-color: rgb(255, 255, 102);"> New York Times ran a critical <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/01/science/earth/clouds-effect-on-climate-change-is-last-bastion-for-dissenters.html" rel="nofollow">story</a> quoting Dessler about MIT meteorology professor Richard Lindzen,</span> who is part of a small minority of climate researchers who argue that mainstream science exaggerates global warming trends. (Lindzen is also a <a href="http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Richard_Lindzen#On_Tobacco" rel="nofollow">skeptic</a> about the <a href="http://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/basic_information/health_effects/cancer/" rel="nofollow">well-documented link</a> between smoking tobacco and lung cancer.) That request sought emails that mentioned Lindzen and Mann, among other things.</font>
<font face="Times New Roman" size="4"><b>Then earlier this month, ATI sent a </b><a href="http://www.scribd.com/doc/99680950/Ati-Dessler-Txam-Foi-Request-II" rel="nofollow"><b>second information request</b></a><b> to Texas A&M expanding the emails it sought from Dessler's account to include any exchanges with<span style=" background-color: rgb(255, 255, 102);"> New York Times reporter Justin Gillis</span>, who wrote the Lindzen story, as well as any communications with the<span style=" background-color: rgb(255, 255, 102);"> PBS investigative journalism show Frontline,</span></b> Frontline producer Catherine Upin, Associated Press science reporter Seth Borenstein, and Suzanne Goldenberg, U.S. environment correspondent for the British newspaper The Guardian. Also covered in that request were any communications Dessler had with the watchdog group<b> Union of Concerned Scientists and </b><a href="http://www.prismpublicaffairs.com/professionals/richard.php" rel="nofollow"><b>Richard Ades</b></a><b>, a public affairs professional who directed the Project on Climate Science</b>, which worked to disseminate high-quality scientific climate research to media and lawmakers.</font>
<font face="Times New Roman" size="4"> </font>
<font face="Times New Roman" size="4"><span style=" background-color: #FFF200;">Late last year ATI sent out a similar information request to Texas Tech seeking information on professor </span><b><span style=" background-color: #FFF200;">Katharine Hayhoe </span></b><span style=" background-color: #FFF200;">(</span><em><span style=" background-color: #FFF200;">photo on right</span></em><span style=" background-color: #FFF200;">), an atmospheric scientist who directs that school's Climate Science Center. Hayhoe wrote a chapter on climate for a book about the environment by former Georgia congressman and GOP presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich only to have him </span><a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2012/jan/06/climate-scientist-newt-gingrich-book-chapter" rel="nofollow"><span style=" background-color: #FFF200;">cut it</span></a><span style=" background-color: #FFF200;"> after criticism from conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh, who </span><a href="http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/daily/2011/12/19/quick_hits_page" rel="nofollow"><span style=" background-color: #FFF200;">refers</span></a><span style=" background-color: #FFF200;"> to Hayhoe as a "climate babe."</span><b><span style=" background-color: #FFF200;"> Other scientists targeted by ATI include NASA climatologists James Hansen and Gavin Schmidt, co-founder of the </span></b><a href="http://www.realclimate.org/" rel="nofollow"><b><span style=" background-color: #FFF200;">RealClimate blog</span></b></a><b><span style=" background-color: #FFF200;"> along with Mann.</span></b></font>
<font face="Times New Roman" size="4"> </font>
<font face="Times New Roman" size="4">ATI's initial lawsuit targeting Mann came on the heels of a similar effort by Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli (R), a global warming skeptic who sought to investigate whether Mann defrauded taxpayers by using manipulated data to win government funding. That case went all the way to Virginia's Supreme Court, which <a href="http://www2.timesdispatch.com/news/2012/mar/02/11/va-supreme-court-rules-against-cuccinelli-uva-clim-ar-1735035/" rel="nofollow">ruled against Cuccinelli</a> earlier this year.</font>

<font face="Times New Roman" size="4">attacked by horner ati:</font>
<font face="Times New Roman" size="4"> </font></p>
<blockquote>
<p><font face="Times New Roman" size="4">Even more curious is the use by Horner of documents produced by NASA in the CEI case (for which Horner is the lead attorney). These consist of some “Outside activity” forms from Gavin Schmidt, specifically one related to his activity on the RealClimate blog (see the <a href="http://climscifoi.blogspot.com/2010/07/cei-and-nasa-lawsuit-ongoing.html">filings in this case</a> for more details). These forms were released in court filings, not through a FOIA request, and so do not have any relevance for determining whether there is a statutory right to see these forms via FOIA.</font>
<font face="Times New Roman" size="4"> </font>
<font face="Times New Roman" size="4">The issue in question in the CEI vs NASA case is whether blogging was part of <b>Schmidt’s official duties (NASA </b>says it was not, while CEI is arguing the opposite). However in this case, Horner is arguing that for the period prior to the filing of Schmidt’s “Outside activity” form, Schmidt (and GISS) were out of compliance with ethics rules (which GISS and Schmidt have denied). For this to be the case though, one must at minimum accept that the RealClimate blogging was indeed not part of Schmidt’s official duties (if it was part of his official duties, then obviously he could not be out of compliance with ethics guidelines related to ‘outside activities’!). Thus, should this example be taken as evidence of NASA failing to uphold ethics rules, it would immediately undermine the argument put forward by Horner in the CEI case (that the RealClimate blogging was an official duty)</font></p>
