When Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth demanded journalists agree not to report anything without formal authorization from the Defense Department, he sent a mass evacuation of legitimate media from the press corps.
What’s left, writes Slate reporter Molly Olmstead, is … really something.
“The Pentagon has remade its press corps, and we’re starting to get an understanding of which people now are allowed access to the halls of power,” said Olmstead, who included a list of the “top hits” that Hegseth’s considers “valid journalism of interest to the public.”
MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell “peddled his 2020 election conspiracy theories through a number of avenues, including his video streaming site,” wrote Olmstead. “As a result, LindellTV has been subject to the same defamation lawsuits that Lindell himself courted, but it carries on with a host of right-wing shows, including the signature Mike Lindell Show.”
LindellTV’s reporters frequently pester Democrats with MAGA lies dressed up as legitimate questions, prompting Nancy Pelosi to publicly snap at them for churning nonsense and MSNBC hosts to blast them for spreading lies to a LindellTV audience that is “too stupid to know the truth.”
And when their reporters are not spouting lies, Olmstead says they’re fawning over President Donald Trump’s “fitness plan” and asking press secretary Karoline Leavitt when Trump plans to go public with it.
Another sycophantic organization still hanging around is The One America News network, which Olmstead describes as “about as extreme as it gets without tipping fully into Alex Jones lizard-people territory.”
“It has promoted hydroxychloroquine as a ‘miracle cure’ for COVID; spread ominous conspiracy theories about George Soros; speculated that Michael Cohen, not Donald Trump, had an affair with Stormy Daniels; and declared that Roy Moore was innocent and actually wonhis election,” said Olmstead. “It has also hired Matt Gaetz as a host.”
“Human Events” is another example of the lingering press corps flotsam, said Olmstead.
“This is the latest home for Jack Posobiec, a content creator so inflammatory that being seen as cozy with him — as Hegseth was, in inviting Posobiec on an overseas trip — can lead to major scandal,” said Olmstead. “Posobiec, who has connections to various hate groups, is known primarily as the man behind Pizzagate. … He remains extreme: “Welcome to the end of democracy. We are here to overthrow it completely,” he said at last year’s Conservative Political Action Conference.
The Navy revoked Posobiec’s security clearance as a U.S. naval intelligence officer on reserve, after his involvements with the Unite the Right white supremacist rally.
The list continues with spurious far-right networks like the National Pulse, whose leader was so inflammatory that Australia’s Labor Party asked to ban him from the country, Olmstead reports. Another is The Epoch Times, which Olmstead points out has been charged with money laundering and is “a dedicated promoter of right-wing conspiracy theories, going so far as to create a network of YouTube channels amplifying hoaxes and election misinformation.
The list goes on, and Olmstead said all will “inevitably benefit from a veneer of legitimacy from the credentialing and from the ‘scoops’ they’re given.”

In March 2019, former Breitbart editor Raheem Kassam announced that he and a conservative lawyer named Will Chamberlainwere going to resurrect the storied right-wing journal Human Events, which had been muddling along for years. Two years later, the historic magazine has become yet another right-wing click factory, pumping out trumped-up investigations and snarky rewrites just as Breitbart did before it. The renaissance of the magazine provides the perfect capsule summary of the conservative movement’s long downward journey from pages to pixels.
A former Washington Post editor founded Human Events in 1944 to serve as a mouthpiece for conservative ideas. Over the next 40 years, it hosted a number of prominent right-wing political personalities—Murray Rothbard, Phyllis Schlafly, Spiro Agnew, and later such luminaries as Sean Hannity and Ann Coulter. It was Ronald Reagan’s favorite magazine. According to one of Reagan’s biographers, his staffers often sought to hide it from the president, lest the articles sway his view on some already-settled issue of taxation or Soviet détente. But over time its influence waned. By 2013, its owner, right-wing book outfit Eagle Publishing, put the magazine up for sale, citing financial difficulties and the ascendance of the 24-hour news cycle. A Christian publishing conglomerate bought it a year later, but the magazine remained moribund until the arrival of Kassam, a British think tank alum who co-founded the United Kingdom edition of Breitbart. Kassam carried over that website’s mentality at the launch, but left the new Human Events within half a year.
The new owners bought the website at a bargain-bin price of approximately $300,000 using Chamberlain’s disposable income, and relaunched it as online-only. There’s no ostentatious journal this time, nor is there much that resembles the argumentative essays of the old magazine. Instead, there’s just run-of-the-mill news aggregation with a standard right-wing bent—it’s not the Afghanistan withdrawal, for instance, but the “botched” Afghanistan withdrawal.
The current anchors of the magazine’s editorial staff includeBrent Hamachek, a former Turning Point USA adviser, and Jack Posobiec, a former Navy intelligence officer and conspiracy theorist who is perhaps best known for fueling the Pizzagate conspiracy and disrupting a Shakespeare in the Park performance of Julius Caesar in 2017. Posobiec’s recent fare has included write-ups of “leaked” slides from the CDC and reported dispatches on White House turmoil that may or may not be entirely the result of the author’s imagination. These articles appear alongside anti–cancel-culture screeds such as “THE DUCHESS IS A VICTIM AND FOOTBALL IS GAY,” notable for its commitment to mixed metaphor. Identity politics has engulfed the United States “like a tsunami,” the article says, and “Americans feel like deer caught in the headlights, on a road paved with eggshells.”
More than anything else, though, the revived Human Events feels pointless, yet another mill to churn out the same grist. The vast majority of articles are wispy-thin rewrites of reportage from The Wall Street Journal or Fox News, designed more to serve as fodder for Chamberlain’s never-ending Twitter feedthan as material for someone who wants to learn what is going on in the world. When Kassam relaunched the publication, he said he wanted it to represent “Trump as a philosophy, not Trump as a man,” and in a certain sense the resuscitated website has done that, but only in the sense that Trump’s “philosophy” consists of culture-war red meat and conspiratorial chicken feed.
No doubt there’s a market for the personalities Human Events is elevating, since it’s the same thing that everyone else on the right is doing—Chamberlain has almost 200,000 Twitter followers, Posobiec has more than a million. Still, there is something demoralizing about the total abasement of the right-wing media space. The old magazine might not have had noble ideas, but it at least took itself and those ideas seriously, whereas the new magazine cares for nothing except conspiracy and provocation.It turns out that the gutter is an ideal place from which to do one’s sniping.

far-right activist and legal gadfly Larry Klayman announced this month that a “citizen grand jury” had indicted President Joe Biden and members of his family, and that a “citizens’ judge” has handed down felony convictions after a “trial” in Boise, Idaho.
“BREAKING: The Bidens Convicted!” was the subject line of an August 24 email sent by Klayman’s group Freedom Watch to readers of the right-wing publication Human Events. Klayman has also talked about the Biden “conviction” in online videos, where he has also posted clips of “evidence” being presented to the fake judge in the fake trial.
Klayman said that “sentencing of the corrupt Biden plan” will be held August 29. “We will then commission established law enforcement and the military to take Biden and his son and his brother into custody if they don’t turn themselves in, and frankly, put them in the slammer,” he said in a
posted on YouTube. He has promised future trials of public health official Anthony Fauci and other perceived enemies of the MAGA movement.
Klayman’s cosplay has no legal standing, but could inspire violent behavior from one of former President Donald Trump’s passionate supporters. Klayman denounced the “Marxian Jewish left”he said was persecuting Trump, calling for a “counterrevolution.” He called the judge in the Georgia indictment an “anti-white racist.”He said he believes that someone in Trump’s orbit will be harmed, which would set off Trump’s supporters.
Klayman’s escapades in the past have included a citizen grand jury that “convicted” then-President Barack Obama of fraud, and a failed rally at the White House that was meant to force Obama out of the White House.
Klayman is using his new version to raise money forFreedom Watch, a group he founded after falling out with the leaders of Judicial Watch, which he also founded.

Human Events was once a newspaper. Then it became an online news site. The next step? “MAGAzine.”
That’s the formulation of Raheem Kassam, the former editor in chief of Breitbart London, who has spearheaded the purchase of Human Events from Salem Media Group. According to an informed source, the purchase price for Human Events was around $300,000.
“We value the brand so highly,” says Kassam, who claims that there’s room in conservative media for a publication that mixes a tabloid sensibility with a hearty intellectual diet in every article. The site will do news reporting and opinion with an initial staffing level of eight journalists and a first-year budget of about $1 million, according to Kassam.
“Feisty MAGA types,” he says, should prepare their applications for the new Human Events: The new-look site should be up and running in about a month.
Jonathan Garthwaite of Townhall Media, an affiliate of Salem Media Group, confirmed to the Erik Wemple Blog that the sale closed on Wednesday night.
Human Events is intertwined with the conservative movement in the United States. Founded in 1944, the publication grafted its name from a trustworthy source: “When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.”
The publication reached peak influence in the 1980s, when longtime subscriber Ronald Reagan took up residence in the White House. Reagan was such a loyal reader that he was known to call or write to the editors to discuss the material, according to author Craig Shirley. So influential were the columns that staffers in the Reagan White House engaged in something of a distribution struggle. Top aides, noted historian Richard Reeves, “did their best each week to keep it out of the reading material they gave the President as he headed up to the living quarters and an evening of television.”
A timeline of Human Events history indicates that Reagan began subscribing to the publication in 1961, a time when the conservative media space was sparsely populated. As the decades wore on, Human Events had to learn to share. Since the arrival of the Internet alone, conservative sites such as the Daily Caller, FoxNews.com, the Blaze, NewsBusters, Independent Journal Review, Breitbart, PJ Media and RedState have jostled and elbowed their way toward a piecemeal fragmentation of the right-leaning U.S. audience.
Human Events couldn’t keep up. It dropped print in 2013, and, according to Kassam, it hasn’t turned out original content in four years, though it has been posting syndicated material from Townhall Media.
The new Human Events, pledges Kassam, will leave the poverty in the past. There will be high-end donors contributing to a nonprofit foundation (Kassam says he’s already courting three such people); there will be solicitations for micro-contributions, a la the Guardian; and there will be subscription content. The buffet business model, says Kassam, means the losses that traditionally pile up at political journals on the right and the left won’t do so at Human Events. “I don’t presume that we will” have losses, says Kassam, who insists that the ventures he helmed in the past have all “made a ton of money. I believe that I am that good,” he says.
Bankrolling the venture is Will Chamberlain, a lawyer who Kassam describes as “independently wealthy” and a fierce social-media supporter of President Trump:

So will Human Events serve as a cheering section for President Trump? “Pro-Trumpism,” says Kassam. “Sometimes Trump isn’t for Trump.” Kassam and Chamberlain — both in their 30s — agree that the site will stick up for the positions that carried Trump to victory in the 2016 presidential campaign. “That’s where I’ve been for almost a decade now, intellectually,” says Kassam.
Does that adherence extend to Trump’s attacks on the media? “I don’t feel like the media is the ‘enemedia.’ I’m not pugilistic about it,” says Kassam, who nonetheless foresees a “Fake News Awards” gala in the future of Human Events.
Kassam, a native of London, left Breitbart in May 2018. The break came months after former Trump adviser Stephen K. Bannon, who’d brought Kassem to the site in 2014, resigned his own position at Breitbart, a move precipitated when his typically edgy remarks surfaced in the popular book by Michael Wolff, “Fire and Fury.” Though Bannon and Kassam have been close, Kassam says he wouldn’t allow the fiery populist to get “anywhere near” his relaunched Human Events.
“Steve takes proprietary control over everything he touches. And that’s his way because he’s that kind of guy — he takes ownership of things,” says Kassam, who once served as an adviser to former U.K. Independence Party leader Nigel Farage.
While at Breitbart, Kassam backed Trump with patented Breitbartian bravado. After a woman named Jessica Leeds spoke out in December 2017 about an alleged sexual assault by Trump in the 1980s, Kassam said this on a Breitbart radio show: “The president is married to Melania Trump, one of the most beautiful and elegant women in the world. Jessica Leeds — uh, uh, looks like a, well I don’t want to be cruel. She doesn’t look like somebody that Donald Trump would hit on, grope, prey upon. Even her old pictures . . . 30 years ago when she’s claiming this exists. This doesn’t add up, this won’t stack up to people in their minds. Knowing what they know about President Trump is that he is to some extent a person who likes appearances, who likes good appearances. . . . He likes things glam. Jessica Leeds doesn’t look too glam to me.”
Asked whether he stands by such thinking — misogyny, actually — Kassam responds, “I get my looks attacked all the time as well.”
Kassam is author of “No Go Zones: How Sharia Law Is Coming to a Neighborhood Near You,” a book that addresses a controversial term that got a great deal of rotation in the aftermath of the January 2015 Paris terrorist attack on the offices of satirical publication Charlie Hebdo. Chatter drifted toward so-called “no-go zones,” allegedly Muslim-dominated areas in France and other countries where sharia law prevailed and authorities feared to tread. Fox News apologized for lending credence to the no-go zone story. Kassam’s book defined the zones as areas “in which the authorities find it difficult to govern as they would govern the rest of the nation,” as the author told the Erik Wemple Blog. He also noted that German Chancellor Angela Merkel made a statement supporting his reporting.
Such editorial sensibilities will make the new Human Events distinct from its competitors. One of those will be the new site — “an independent conservative media company that resists partisan boosterism and combines a focus on old-school reporting with interesting and provocative commentary and analysis” — under the direction of Jonah Goldberg, a fixture at National Review, and Stephen F. Hayes, the last editor in chief of the recently shuttered Weekly Standard. There’s also the Bulwark, a newly invigorated conservative site with staffing from the Weekly Standard.
“It’s the fuddy-duddy neocon set just grasping for the last thing that they can get,” says Kassam.

On Wednesday, Human Events announced that it has acquired right-wing outlet the Post Millennial. The acquisition brings some of the most notorious members of the far-right media landscape together under one digital roof.
Canada-based the Post Millennial has courted controversy in recent years with what many describe as its biased coverage and for employing far-right provocateur Andy Ngo. Human Events’ stable of writers includes Ngo’s ideological allies such as Jack Posobiec, Charlie Kirk, and others.
The conservative Human Events has been a polarizing political force over its nearly 80-year history. Originally founded as a print publication in 1944, it went digital-only in 2013.
Former President Ronald Reagan credited Human Events with dissuading him of his liberal views and reportedly considered it his “favorite reading for years.” Reagan’s staff disliked its influence over the president so much that they reportedly blocked its delivery to him, leading Reagan to order several copies delivered to the White House residence on weekends.
Human Events ceased print publication in 2013. In 2019, Raheem Kassam and Will Chamberlain bought the outlet in the hopes of resuming a more regular publication schedule. Kassam departed very shortly thereafter. A year later, Human Events appointed Jeff Webb as co-publisher and senior news editor to rebuild it as a daily platform.
Rumors of Human Events’ and the Post Millennial’s business relationship began circulating online last week.
Some believe that the merger is a reaction to the Post Millennial losing advertisers over its employment of extremist-linked Ngo and coverage that often villainizes leftist activists and causes.
According to a release announcing the acquisition, the two entities will remain separate, but will share “social media assets, digital ad platforms, and other administrative resources.”
Fans of the publications reacted to the news with jubilation. They believe that the relationship will greatly increase the reach and influence of both. Similar more mainstream publications have undergone mergers recently as well, such as BuzzFeed acquiring HuffPost, and Vox purchasing New York Magazine
Their detractors similarly believe that the duo is more powerful than the sum of its parts. They’re concerned that the merger will facilitate each’s efforts to pollute the information ecosystem. “Dangerous bedfellows,”@kate_ross_ wrote of the news.
Researchers said they are already looking into which ad placement companies are working with Human Events.

A video has surfaced on Twitter that shows conservative journalist Andy Ngo laughing as members of the far-right group Patriot Prayer plan an attack on anti-fascist patrons at a Portland bar. The incident, which happened in May, is now at the center of a lawsuit.
The antifa members were having a peaceful May Day celebration when Patriot Prayer members came to protest, according to the Portland Mercury. Several fights broke out, and now the bar is suing the Patriot Prayer members for allegedly causing the riot. Ngo covered the event on Twitter and blamed the brawl on antifa.
Portland-based journalist Alex Zielinski posted a video, which is part of the court documents in the ongoing lawsuit and appears to negate Ngo’s claims.
“This clip, shot right before Patriot Prayer arrived at [the bar] Cider Riot on May Day, is the clearest evidence I’ve seen supporting the claim that PP … were intent on instigating a fight that afternoon,” Zielinski tweeted.
In the video, Patriot Prayer members discuss what weapons they have, talk about the direction of the wind to avoid getting pepper-sprayed, and some make phone calls to request for backup.
Ngo is present in the video and can even be seen laughing at certain points.
“[Ngo] smiles as they joke about being outnumbered. There’s no way he couldn’t know the group was planning on instigating violence against people at Cider Riot,” Zielinski tweeted.
In Ngo’s coverage of the riots, he posted misleading videos that crop out violent actions from Patriot Prayer members, putting the blame fully on antifa. Since then, videos have emerged that discredit several of his tweets.
“As more people send me clips, it becomes clear that Andy’s work is plagued by these dishonest edits. For example, in this clip, he edited out some goons stomping a man’s head, and did it with a sloppy looking jump-cut in his own clip,” Twitter user @RespectableLaw wrote.
Ngo is relatively new to the media scene. He is known for videos of political clashes in the streets of Portland and for a recent attack by an antifa supporter on June 29, which reportedly sent Ngo to the hospital.
Some Twitter users–like Charlotte Clymer, the communications director for the Human Rights Campaign–have said that Ngo purposely instigates fights with left-wing protesters in order to get publicity.
“Violence is completely wrong … but I’m also not going to pretend that this wasn’t Ngo’s goal from the start,” Clymer tweeted.

Update 7:37am CT, Aug 27: On Monday, Aug. 26, several reporters noticed Andy Ngo was no longer listed on Quillette’s website as an editor and that Ngo removed Quillette from his bio.
Many speculated it was a result of the videos of Ngo with Patriot Prayer.
Quilllette founder Claire Lehmann denied that was the case, however, saying Ngo’s exit from the site had been long planned.

After the State Department reconfirmed the existence of biological research laboratories in Ukraine and expressed concern Russia may seize them, far-right media accused the United States of both controlling the labs for nefarious purposes and orchestrating a false flag operation against Russia. In reality, the idea that these facilities are controversial, much less a threat to Russia, is a Kremlin-backed conspiracy theory.
During a March 8 hearing of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) asked Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland if Ukraine has “chemical or biological weapons.” Nuland responded that Ukraine has “biological research facilities,” adding that the U.S. government was “quite concerned” about the facilities falling into Russian hands. When Rubio noted the existence of a Russian disinformation campaign already in-effect to blame Ukraine for a future release of biological weapons, Nuland replied that “it is classic Russian technique to blame on the other guy what they're planning to do themselves.”

Russia isn’t the only state actor helping spread this conspiracy theory, which was also promoted by a spokesperson from the Chinese government — following a pattern of Chinese disinformation established during the pandemic.
The conspiracy theory that there are U.S.-funded bioweapons labs in Ukraine, and that they have been directed to destroy whatever pathogens are inside, has been floating around fringe and far-right media for several days since the conflict began. This burgeoning conspiracy theory has followed closely behind what theBritish Ministry of Defense described as “a notable intensification of Russian accusations that Ukraine is developing nuclear or biological weapons,” which the Kremlin hopes could provide “a retrospective justification” for its unprovoked war.
Ukraine does have biological research labs that were modernized as a result of a pact between its Ministry of Health and the U.S. Department of Defense. The U.S. and Ukraine entered into theagreement in 2005 — brokered, in part, by then-Sens. Barack Obama (D-IL) and Richard Lugar (R-IN) – to jointly-prevent the spread of deadly pathogens developed as part of the former Soviet Union’s expansive biological weapons program. As part of the agreement, the U.S. provided funding for security upgrades to the Soviet-era facilities to support the “peaceful research” of infectious diseases.
The DOD’s Biological Threat Reduction Program was designed as part of an arms control program to secure “pathogen strains and sensitive biological knowledge within Ukraine," specifically to prevent those resources from being released or weaponized. In fact, the agreement governing these facilities evolved from the Cooperative Threat Reduction Program after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991 and the 1994 Budapest Memorandum, which assisted Ukraine with the removal and decommissioning of Soviet nuclear weapons.
Some variations of the conspiracy theory go even further to claim that the labs are being run by the U.S. In reality, the labs are funded and operated by the Ukrainian government. But claims to the contrary have existed for years and are part of a Russian disinformation campaign to discredit the U.S. in the eyes of former Soviet republics. Indeed, FactCheck.org produced a full article debunking a previous iteration of this conspiracy theory on March 2, nearly a week before Nuland’s testimony.
Despite the abundance of evidence showing that these are not weapons facilities, far-right media personalities pounced on Nuland’s testimony about “research facilities” in Ukraine to hype Russia’s narrative justifying the invasion and to falsely claim she “confirmed every conspiracy theory about the existence of those labs”:
During the March 9 edition of Real America Voice’s War Room: Pandemic, host Steve Bannon claimed that Nuland was let “off the hook” and told all Florida residents to contact Rubio and ask him if the CIA, Defense Department, or DIA gave him the questions to ask. Bannon went on to play a clip of the hearing and said Rubio should have asked, “Is that a lab? What are they creating? Are we involved in any way? Have we financed it? Are we partners? Do we actually know what’s going on?” Bannon later said that “no Republican should vote for any money on Ukraine, zero dollars,” until we know exactly what is going on with the labs.
On March 9, the Gateway Pundit’s Jim Hoft shared a video that he said was of the “Director of the Information and Press Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation” telling the U.S. that Russia has “found your biological weapons” after Nuland’s testimony.
In a March 8 Gateway Pundit article, Hoft repeated China’s claim that there are “26 US biological labs in Ukraine alone” before running through the conspiracy theory that there was “biological testing in Ukraine near the Russian border.” Hoft went on to call Nuland’s comments an “explosive development.”
In a March 8 Telegram post, former Trump national security adviser Mike Flynn shared a post claiming, “I was told that biolabs in Ukraine was a conspiracy theory yet here we are. They are now admitting it openly.”
Former 8kun administrator, QAnon influencer, and GOP congressional candidate Ron Watkins shared an Epoch Times article in a March 9 Telegram post that questioned whether Vice President Kamala Harris will “negotiate the cover up of the US Biolabs in Ukraine.”
A March 8 post on thefar-right forum TheDonald shared a video of Nuland’s comments and added, “Another win for conspiracy theorists: the biolabs in Ukraine exist! CONFIRMED!”
A March 8 post on theQAnon forum The Great Awakening shared a video of Nuland from theRussian state media outlet RTand called her comments “Narrative Spin 101.”
In a March 8 Gab post, QAnon influencer Anonymous Patriot shared a post about Nuland’s comments and wrote, “And there it is. PANIC.”
