Clinical application of cannabinoids and terpenes
A cannabinoid is defined as anything that interacts with a cannabinoid receptor (part of the endocannabinoid system)
The resinous cannabinoids (e.g., tetrahydrocannabinol and cannabidiol) are the subject of much current research, despite the persistence of an outdated legal climate surrounding their sole natural source, Cannabis(this has not always been the case; not so long ago, the herb was a standard presence in the U.S. Pharmacopoeia and the Eclectic Materia Medica). Various types of human cells have cannabinoid receptors which interact with our endogenous cannabinoid compound, anandamide, as well as with the omega-3 fatty acids and the isobutylamides from Echinacea. This system is involved in the regulation of inflammatory processes, neuropathic pain perception, muscle relaxation, and the hunger/satiety axis. It is well-established that the cannabinoids are anti-emetic, making Cannabis a useful adjunct treatment for chemotherapy; it can also be helpful for cancer-associated pain and cachexia. Although this herb can be very useful in some patients, people with bipolar disorder or schizophrenia may not tolerate it well. However, when used as a botanical medicine, it has an excellent safety profile compare to that of many pharmaceuticals. (Ganora)
