C3 - Complement component 3
Return to Immune System Menu
Complement component 3 (C3) is a protein that's part of the immune system.
It's the most abundant complement protein in serum.
C3 is essential for activating the complement system, which is the body's first line of defense against disease.
C3 helps protect the body from infections, and removes dead cells and foreign material.
C3 is found primarily in the blood. A C3 blood test measures the activity of this protein in your blood. The normal range for C3 is 88 to 201 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) or 0.88 to 2.01 grams per liter. High or low C3 levels could be signs of an underlying condition. These conditions can include:
- Autoimmune diseases
- Immune disorders
- Infections
- Chronic kidney or liver disease
