The Magic of Vervain
VERVAIN- VERBENA OFFICINALIS IN NORSE FOLK MEDICINE, WITCHCRAFT AND SHAMANISM
Overview
Medicinal Parts: the dried aerial parts collected during the flowering season, the fresh, flowering herb, the flowers and the whole fresh plant.
Not to be confused with Lippiae triphyllae folium
Note: there is no significant difference between the uses of the European vervain (V. officinalis) and the Blue vervain (V. hastata). They may be used interchangeably. During the 19th century Eclectic physicians used Blue vervain root by preference to the herb as it was considered more effective.
Qualities: bitter, a bit pungent, cool, neutral, stimulating, dispersing, relaxing, restoring, dissolving
Tropism: lungs, liver, kidneys, stomach, intestines, uterus, skin, nerves, immune system
Ground: all krases, biotypes, constitutions

Habitat Cues

- Common in: roadsides, field edges, ruderal areas, uncultivated places.
Field‑Ready Quick ID
- Tall, wiry, 4‑angled stems with rough texture.
- Opposite, rough, lobed leaves—lower more divided, upper narrower.
- Very small lilac‑pink flowers on long, slender spikes.
- Woody stem base and four tiny nutlets in fruit.
- Grows in disturbed, human‑adjacent habitats.
Constituents
Iridoide monoterpenes (0.2-0.5%); including among others verbenalin (cornin, 0.15%), hastatoside (0.08%), dihydroverenalin (0.01%)
Flavonoids; including mong others luteolin, scutellarin and 6-hydroxy-luteolin glycosides, artemitin, sorbifolin, pedalitin, nepetin (eupafolin)
Caffeic acid derivatives; verbascoside (0.8%), eucovoside, artynoside
Volatile oil (incl. citral), bitter, tannins, mucliage
- A new triterpenoid from Verbena officinalis L.
- Two new secoiridoid glycosides from Verbena officinalis.
Effects
The amoridlike affect of the irridoid glycosides explains its use as an astringent. The drug is weakly antiedemic, analgesic, cytotoxic and antitumoral. The verbenalin has antitussive, secretolytic and lactation-promoting properties.
Tissue State Relevance
Vervain is a cooling, relaxing, slightly drying, bitter, tension‑dispersing, nervine + hepatic herb. Its energetics are consistent across European, Mediterranean, and North American traditions.
Wind / Tension — High relevance (PRIMARY)
Why:
- Classic relaxing nervine for emotional wind, irritability, overthinking, and stress‑driven tightness.
- Smooth‑muscle relaxant → GI tension, menstrual tension, chest tightness.
- Releases “held” patterns in the neck/shoulders (the classic vervain signature).
Patterns it fits:
- Stress headaches
- Neck/shoulder tightness
- GI spasm from anxiety
- PMS tension
- Emotional wind with fixation or irritability
Energetic signature: relaxing, unwinding, dispersing.
Heat / Excitation — Moderate relevance
Why:
- Cooling bitter → reduces low‑grade inflammatory excitation.
- Nervine action calms sympathetic overactivation.
- Useful when heat is secondary to tension or emotional agitation.
Patterns it fits:
- Irritated digestion from stress
- Mild inflammatory heat with nervous overlay
- Hot headaches from emotional excitation
Energetic signature: cooling + calming.
Damp / Stagnation — Moderate relevance
Why:
- Bitter hepatic → moves stuck fluids, supports liver drainage.
- Relaxation improves lymphatic flow.
- Works best when stagnation is tension‑driven.
Patterns it fits:
- GI stagnation from spasm
- Pelvic stagnation with tension
- Liver stagnation with emotional wind
Energetic signature: drying + mobilizing.
Cold / Depression — Low relevance
Vervain is cooling and bitter → can worsen cold/depressed tissue states unless tension is the primary driver.
Patterns it fits:
- Cold stagnation with tension overlay
- Low appetite from emotional wind
Patterns it does not fit:
- True cold/depression
- Cold digestion
- Cold pelvic patterns
Dry / Atrophy — Low relevance
Vervain is drying + bitter, so it does not moisten or rebuild tissues.
Only fits:
- Atrophy with tension + mild heat
- Atrophic digestion with emotional wind
Tissue‑State Summary
| Tissue State | Relevance | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Wind / Tension | High | Relaxing nervine; disperses emotional + muscular tension |
| Heat / Excitation | Moderate | Cooling bitter; calms sympathetic excitation |
| Damp / Stagnation | Moderate | Bitter hepatic; moves tension‑driven stagnation |
| Cold / Depression | Low | Cooling; may worsen cold patterns |
| Dry / Atrophy | Low | Drying; not restorative |

TCM & Western Herbal Uses
General: Preparations of Vervain are used for diseases and ailments of the oral and pharyngeal mucosa, such as sore throat, and for diseases of the respiratory tract, such as coughs, asthma and whooping cough. In addition, it is used internally for pain, cramps, fatigue, nervous disorders, and digestive disorders. It is used externally as a gargle for cold symptoms and for diseases of the oral and pharyngeal cavity.
Vervain is also used for antipruritic treatment of skin diseases and minor topical burns (in France) and for arthritis, rheumatism, dislocations and contustions. An astringent for poorly healing wounds.
Homeopathic Use: for bruising and cerebral convulsions.

This plant is a bitter relaxing and stimulating nervine. In hot infusion it influences a good circulation toward the capillaries and soothes the nervous system throughout. The liver, gall ducts and bowels are all influenced by it. It gives favourable results in biliousness, periodic bilious attacks, and is somewhat antiperiodic. Boiling destroys considerable of its stimulating quality and leaves it a relaxing nervine.
