The short run vs. the long run. Worries over pace of global growth. The divergence of EU Economies means the sustainability has to fix those on an unsustainable path. Some debts are too large and ECB has been strained. The Gov`s have to play there role with austerity measures. The leadership of the ECB is both responsible and professional. There is no doubt that democratically elected Governments must work in tandem to solve the problems. The US unemployed require new skills, & training. The entire world is growing at a slower pace than before, and the emerging markets are carrying the train. Uncertainty is the enemy of growth, both politically & economically. Hambro predicts a global meltdown, and therefore GOLD will rule. If China continues to keep the world afloat, the building block is iron ore (steel). Hambro is spreading risk with the listing of his (60%) new Russian Company- Petropavlovsk for mining iron ore. June 2010. “Peter Hambros mining company is planning a $1 billion listing of its iron ore division in Hong Kong. An announcement is expected within weeks as the company, renamed Petropavlovsk last year, concentrates on its core gold operations in Russia. It brought in new investors yesterday when it raised $60 million in a private share placing in Hong Kong. The business, which has its main listing in London and is chaired by Mr Hambro, is understood to have favoured Hong Kong because its iron ore mines are close to the Chinese border and will feed Chinese steel smelters. Asia Resources Fund and CEF Holdings bought stakes in the iron ore division, valuing it at about $800 million.Petropavlovsk’s Kuranakh iron ore mine is expected to begin production soon and will produce about 900,000 tonnes of ore this year. The $60 million raised in the placing yesterday will help to finance expansion up to about ten million tonnes a year by the end of 2013. The Hong Kong listing would raise further funds for expansion up to 20 million tonnes by 2015.Petropavlovsk, formerly Peter Hambro Mining, is the third-largest gold producer in Russia. 41. M. El Erian Interview: Job market report, its grim & scary. The composition & duration is worrisome. US unemployment crisis. , which requires crisis management. We need holistic approaches. 3 Things required, rather than a tactical approach. (1)Coordinated approach from US agencies. (2)Coordination from around the world. (3)Coordination from politicians. Jobless rate remains at 9.1%. The framework for a policy creation is critical. Washington needs to understand that if it does not move comprehensive, housing, labour, credit markets, lower interest rates ect as it will get worse and Europe is far from any resolution and equally bad. If the FED is willing in able, which it has, has it the right policy arrangements. The Fed is a bridge only. The Fed can delay repayment time frames. The Fed is only a bridge, not a policy maker. Housing is critical!. Washington cannot focus on one thing, just like policy makers in Europe. It has to be comprehensive. There is time when you worry about your capital and another on the interest on capital. The downside risk is escalating, and my new normal is 30-50% on US & Europe recession. We have to realize, that whatever Obama comes up with, it has to pass congress. A critical speech for the President to get confidence back into the markets.
42. Gene Spurling on UNEMPLOYMENT Status- Obama calls for an urgent speech to Congress where he intends to create a significant impact on job creation over the next 18 months. Tax cuts to help workers & small businesses. A larger vision to get America working and investing in the future. When you consider Obama inherited the financial recession that something has to be done for job growth.
