SSTEMS — SIX MATERIALS
SSTEMS — SIX MATERIALS
SSTEMS stands for:
SPACE
SHAPE
TIME
EMOTION
MOVEMENT
STORY.
EQUAL MATERIALS
No material is automatically the master of the others.
Traditional theatre may privilege:
STORY
and:
EMOTION.
Traditional dance may privilege:
MOVEMENT
and:
MUSIC.
The Six Viewpoints suspend these hierarchies so each material can be investigated independently.
ISOLATION
One material is selected as the primary lens.
The other materials remain physically present but are not the principal focus.
DATA COLLECTION
The artist gathers detailed information without immediately deciding how it will become art.
TIME COMMITMENT
Overlie recommends sustained study of each material.
The workshop refers to approximately thirty-six hours as an ideal initial period of investigation for each Viewpoint.
This is a training proposition, not a condition for being allowed to use any element.
