SenseMaker®
SenseMaker® is the only software and methodology licensed to use Cognitive Edge’s (now Cynefin Co.) patented technique that encourages people to both share authentic experiences and then signify their perception of that experience. It prevents misinterpretation by (even well-intentioned) experts and allows the quantitative analysis of people’s authentic voice.
SenseMaker® has been described as the first distributed ethnographic research tool.
- It allows respondents to become ethnographers in their own communities by contributing stories in their own contexts, in their own time, using their phones, laptops or other electronic devices.
- Unlike traditional questionnaires, the tool requires individuals to tell very specific stories about their experiences, which then form a discrete item.
- Rather than being mediated by experts or researchers, the power of interpretation always remains at the subject level; it is the individual who provides the data that decides what it means (self-signification).
- One method of self-signification is to place their stories within a triad. Each placement gives three items of quantitative data which, in disintermediation, can be graphically represented as a ‘fitness landscape’.
- These landscapes can store thousands of stories and are used to help identify patterns of meaning over time.
- The originating narrative supports the statistical data and is always available as a description for data patterns or as a method for intervention design.
