“Revelation”
Revelation as a way of gaining knowledge is a waste of time at best or dangerous at its worst.
Thomas Paine calls the sharing of revelations with others “hearsay.” Simply put.
Personal Revelation as a concept is fine, but extending it beyond the self, beyond the idea of the Muse, inspiration, or the spark, to "Thou Shalts and Thou Shalt Nots," for others to follow, is abusive.
Which is worse:
- Claiming to speak for God, knowing that you don’t.
- Claiming to speak for God, not knowing that you don’t.
?
An omniscient and omnipotent God
- Speaks to no one clearly, or only indirectly, or by some sort of vague inspiration. How limited and not powerful.
- Speaks to very few, particularly those who are good at convincing others that they are getting revelation. Such as Mohammed, Joseph Smith, etc. How limited and not very powerful.
- Speaks to everyone. Let’s not beat around the bush. Normal people are not getting clear messages from God. Schizophrenics and the delusional may be, but they are … delusional. Why can an all-powerful God not speak clearly to two individual rivals simultaneously to convince them to be on the same page? It basically doesn’t happen. “It would eliminate faith.” Wrong. God doesn’t need faith and never did; only wicked men do, to control others.
People who claim to be receiving revelation are mostly only getting revelation about things they already believe, or that agree with their worldview. They are not getting concrete, clear, technical, high-information content from God, and almost never getting answers to questions they were not asking in the first place, or answers that surprised the petitioner. That should tell us something.
Also, apparently God cannot even communicate bits. I am open to the idea that something else is going on, something more human and personal, but even rudimentary communication technology like fire beacons and smoke signals can reliably communicate bits. Weak sauce from a supposedly omnipotent/omniscience God.
People need to stop projecting their frailties and limitations onto God in desperate bids for power. All this idolatry is unbecoming and unrighteous.
