Faith = Vice (Delusion)

There are those who scoff at the schoolboy, calling him frivolous and shallow: Yet it was the schoolboy who said "Faith is believing what you know ain't so."

— Mark Twain, Pudd'nhead Wilson's New Calendar, Ch. XII

Faith: belief in something for which there is insufficient evidence.

Delusion: belief in something for which there is contradictory evidence.

I never understood faith as a virtue. I can understand other virtues: patience, compassion, appropriate loyalty, love and agape, but faith always seems like control rather than a virtue. It seems to lie in a metaphysical realm than a psychosocial virtue.

Faith often just means pretending to have certainty when all you really have is uncertainty... because pretending to have certainty feels better. When it comes to religious faith, the devil is in the details of the faith. Faith can indeed help some flawed people improve their behavior. Unfortunately, faith can also make good people choose to do bad things, thinking that the bad things are "obedience to god."

Nailed it! If faith means living with uncertainty without running away from it, then atheists and scientists have more faith than all the theists put together. "Faith to follow where the evidence takes me." If faith is supposed to mean believing in something without evidence or in spite of evidence, that would also not be a good thing, that would be delusion. If people mean "hope," then they should say "hope," which is probably better than despair. As another commenter said, faith also means "control." If people use the word faith in those four ways to mean "control," "hope," "pretending to be certain (pretense)," and "believing against or without evidence (delusion)," then why don't we use those words instead? Where is there virtue left in faith?

It is better to be bankrupt than to spend counterfeit money.
