CLIMATEGATE 2.0: A PATTERN OF DECEPTION AND COLLUSION! by The Elephant's Child
November 27, 2011, 8:58 pm
Filed under: Economy, Energy, Environment, Junk Science | Tags: Climategate 2.0, Consequences, The IPCC
The Climate meeting in Durban is just opening, and the new batch of ClimateGate e-mails —Climategate 2.0 — is dominating environmental news. “They not only reveal bias, but also some private doubts among the core scientist faithful about the scientific basis for the IPCC’s policy goals,”as climate scientist Roy Spencer explains.
In trying to learn about a subject as complex as climate, scientists may have diametrically opposing views on some matter, even given the same evidence. They may come to completely different conclusions about what their measurements mean. Scientists are humans with biases.
The problem with climate science, as we now refer to ‘global warming,’ is that governments got all excited about “saving the planet” and funded that research which would look for the causes of global warming and the problems that would result from that warming. In other wordsthey funded one side of the question, and neglected to fund any science intended to demonstrate that warming and cooling were natural phenomenon.
The funding — grants, prestige, facilities, equipment, assistants — was not only plentiful, but encouraged anyone in any sort of scientific field to write a grant proposal that would make their specialty important to climate. That biases appeared is not surprising. That some would go too far in defense of their own biases is unfortunate, and revealed by this new release of Climategate 2.0 emails.
Ever since NOAA’s James Hansen chose the hottest day of summer in Washington DC to warn Congress about the out-of-control warming of the earth, and how they must act to save the planet, Congress has encouraged the investigation. Dr. Hansen also provides us with an example of the rewards for the warmist, as his “outside” earnings from speeches, appearances, and protests have topped $1 million. Outside income that he neglected to report to his institution.
Dr. Roy Spencer has written a generous essay on Bias in Scientific Research, Climategate 2.0, and the scientists who supported the IPCC efforts. The IPCC was founded over 20 years ago to support political and energy policy goals, not to search for scientific truth.
For the Climategate 2.0 emails, go to Anthony Watt’s blog” Watts up with that“, or to Mark Moran’s Climate Depot, or to Steven Milloy’s JunkScience.com. It’s great fun. They validate everything the skeptics have been saying for years.
It is almost impossible to estimate the total of the vast wasted sums spent by governments (plural) on policies and programs derived from climate change: the race to eliminate carbon in all its forms, the attack on coal mines, the attack on offshore oil drilling, electric cars, wind farms, solar arrays, the EPA and all its regulation, the Department of Energy and all its grants and subsidies, the ‘smart grid,” Al Gore’s ‘Inconvenient Truth, the Chicago Carbon Exchange, the 20,000 old folks who died from fuel poverty in Britain last year, down to all the advertising that brags about how “green” a business is. A pox on all of it. The damage done by this delusion is incalculable. As Christopher Booker says in The Telegraph:
The scare over man-made global warming is not only the scientific scandal of our generation, but a suicidal flight from reality.
Do read up on this story. It’s important to understand what is going on, and to try to understand the consequences of all this deception. It affects everything, absolutely everything.]

On Wednesday, December 7, CFACT cosponsored a press conference with U.S. Senator James Inhofe at the UN climate change conference in Durban, South Africa. The UN broadcast it live on their website, and you can watch the highlights here:
...If you wish to view the full 30-minute press conference, the UN has it available as a webcast here.
On Tuesday, CFACT conducted a highly publicized parachute drop which called attention to Climategate 2.0.
The Wednesday press conference featured an analysis from Senator Inhofe of the prospects of a new climate treaty in the U.S. Senate. The conference also featured the release of Marc Morano's (publisher of ClimateDepot.com) new report “A-Z Climate Reality Check” which details troubles and failings in what has been falsely proclaimed by global warming advocates to be a “settled scientific consensus.”
“Climate Depot’s new A-Z report reveals that the great man-made global warming catastrophe that was predicted – has been cancelled.” Morano said. “The scientific reality is that on virtually every claim – from A-Z – the claims of the promoters of man-made climate fears are failing and in many instances going in the opposite direction. The global warming movement is suffering the scientific death of a thousand cuts. This Climate Depot special report categorizes and indexes the full range of climate developments in a handy A-Z reference guide from the Antarctic to Polar Bears to Mount Kilimanjaro to Sea Levels to Global temperatures to hurricanes and tornados.”
Nobel Prize nominee, Leon Louw, Executive Director of South Africa's Free Market Institute, discussed the devastating impact climate policy has had on the economies of both the developed and developing world and the crippling hindrance it poses to the poor.
South African nuclear physicistDr. Kelvin Kemm discussed global warming policy providing a unique South African analysis.
When a Greenpeace activist asked a question about ocean acidification, Lord Christopher Monckton, freshly rested from his parachute jumpto call attention to Climategate 2.0, delivered a thorough scientific refutation of the idea that ocean acidification is a problem caused by man-made global warming.
“Secretary Figueres is telling the COP that she can obtain a new commitment period in Durban.” Said CFACT Executive Director Craig Rucker. “After she hears what Senator Inhofe has to say, she may want to reevaluate her wishful thinking.”

<Christopher Monckton, 3rd Viscount Monckton of Brenchley (born 1952) is "a caricature English peer",...Monckton's father Gilbert was one of those kicked out in 1999 when the hereditary complement of the House of Lords was cut to 92, thus leaving Christopher's status as Viscount of Brenchley a matter only of interest to the aristocracy nerd contingent on Wikipedia. Since Christopher inherited the title in 2006, he has consistently misrepresented himself as being a member of the House of Lords. He has various pseudo-legal theories as to why this is the case, ... The main point appears to be to represent himself in other countries as having governmental power and status that he does not when talking up climate change denial.
The House has asked that he desist in his frequent habit of implying, or outright claiming, to be a member in any way whatsoever. They have also requested, rather forcefully, that he stop using a personal insignia closely resembling the portcullis insignia of the House of Lords, and are presently '"taking steps with a view to ensuring that Lord Monckton does not in future either claim to be a member of the House or use the parliamentary emblem or any variant thereof."[15]>
{The GOP has at least twice had him as an expert witness on climate change, at important House Committee hearings.
Monckton had been told twice by the British House of Lords, to stop claiming he is a member. Yet he introduces himself to U.S. congress as an emissary from Parliament. He embellishes all his fake temperature charts, etc and other publications, with a very close facsimile of the seal of Parliament, the crowned portcullis. They have told him to stop using their seal.}:
Lies: At least his version is more technicolor gaudy (pink portcullis, though a homophobe; perhaps it goes with his AIDS policy?), as befitting a clown prince. He has also claimed to be a Nobel Winner (as a member of the IPCC ][which requires only filling out a webform, no publications requires; his claim to be appointed is not possible], one of many ironies since he attacks Gore), also claims to have a cure for AIDS [despite arguing all those who have it should be forcibly quarantined), and that he won a lawsuit against George Monbiot of the Guardian (he hasn't though he has threatened to sue various reporters, scientists and academics who challenge him). When called on the Nobel, he said it was joke, though included in an official biography long after; Moreover, [Journalist Peter Hadfield coined the term "Monckton Manoeuvre" (alternate: Monckton Maneuver) to describe Monckton's tactic of changing his position when shown to be wrong and pretending that his position hasn't changed. In addition he claims to have been PM Thatcher's science advisor (he wasn't, according to the one who was) and that he introduced computers to the government [Colossus? WWII]. An official refereed to him a bag carrier."
He claims to have to the the climate "debate" by accident, as an ex-pat Texas fracker asked him to do a study, ended up 40 page report:
< CEO: “And they all tell me that this is a real problem, this is the worst problem humanity has ever faced and we have to do everything we can to stop this and you’ve said: ‘no problem at all’.”
Monckton: ‘Well I don’t say there is no problem at all, I say it’s not likely that there is much of a problem and even if it were it would be cheaper to let it happen.” >

Agenda 21: April, 2013
In early April, Monckton arrived in New Zealand for a speaking tour sponsored by the Climate Realists Network titled the “Climate of Freedom Tour.” According to the event description, Monckton will speak on “Climate Change and its underlying ideological framework, the United Nations Agenda 21 and the threat this is to freedom.” Agenda 21(PDF available here) is a plan created by the United Nations with the primary purpose of promoting sustainable development. A full list of Monckton's tour venues and dates is available online.

Hey, remember how Monckton got published in a UFO magazine? Well, now he’s in a Larouche publication, Executive Intelligence Review (see cover to right), being interviewed about the IPCC plan to RULE THE WORLD.
However, they are not concerned with whether there is a problem or not. They
merely wish to pretend that there is a problem, and try
to do so with a straight face, for long enough to persuade,
not the population, because we have no say in
this, but the governing class in the various member states
of the United Nations Framework Convention on
Climate Change: That they should hand over their
powers as government to the United Nations or to a new
agency, or possibly just to the existing climate panel,
merely restructured a bit. So that we would no longer be
free to decide what our currency would be, or how much
of it there should be, or what we could burn, or what we
could do. These things would be dictated to us by the
dictators at the center.
The Larouchite who interviewed him reckons that Monckton is correct but hasn’t yet realised that Prince Philip and Prince Charles are the puppet masters controlling the IPCC.
Other Moncktonian gems from the EIR interview:
And it works no better than their attempts to ban DDT,
which led to the deaths of 40 million children in the
poorer countries. A totally unnecessary ban. DDT is
not dangerous! You can eat it by the tablespoonful – do you no harm at all. But they invented a scare that it causes cancer, which it does not. They invented a
scare that it might thin the eggshells, which it does
not – unless you happen to deprive the birds of calcium
in their diet, before you do the measurement,
which is how they got the bogus result they based it
on.
The use of DDT against malaria is not banned. The LD50 (quantity that kills half of test subjects) for DDT is 200 mg/kg for monkeys (closest analogue to humans). So for a 75 kg person that’s 15g, or one tablespoon. A 50% chance of killing you does not, to me, seem to be the same as “no harm at all”. And DDT does thin bird shells
Same with HIV, where, as with any other fatal, incurable infection, it should have been treated as
what’s called a notifiable disease, carriers isolated immediately
to protect the rest of the population. This was
not done. The result? Twenty-five million dead, 40 million infected and going to die, and heaven knows how far the epidemic will continue to spread.[he claimed to have a cure, that straight people could not spread it, and all with HIV? should be locked up]
Yes, that’s Monckton’s infamous plan for the life imprisonment of anyone who is HIV positive.
Kofi Annan has just issued a bizarre, bogus report stating
that 300,000 people have died already as a result of
global warming or climate change per year, and more
deaths are possible. But the policies that he’s advocating
to solve this will kill billions of people, and will
eclipse that, even if it were true.[Ag21]
That must be Monckton’s one millionth wild exaggeration.

Earlier he had been seen dressed in traditional Arab garb handing out climate change denial leaflets.[37]

Christopher Monckton is a non-scientist AGW denier, who has had articles published in TheGuardian and in a non-peer-reviewed newsletter[1] of the American Physical Society(whose Council subsequently disagreed with Monckton's conclusions)[1] claiming that global warming is neither man-made nor likely to be catastrophic. Monckton has made various false claims in the past such as that he is a member of the British House of Lords.[2], a Nobel Prize winner, inventor of a cure for HIV, winner of a defamation case against George Monbiot and writer of a peer-reviewed article. He was deputy leader of the far right United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) before being sacked from the party in 2013.

Credentials
Monckton is the third Viscount Monckton of Brenchley and reportedly a former advisor to the policy unit of the British government during the 1980s; he is employed as Chief Policy Adviser for the denier lobby group, Science and Public Policy Institute.[3].
Monckton is also Scotland Leader of the right-wing nationalist party United Kingdom Independence Party.
His critics, including The Guardian writer George Monbiot, point out that Monckton has only a "degree in classics and a diploma in journalism and...no further qualifications."[4]
Sponsors
Monckton's 2011 speaking tour of Australia was part-funded by the Australian Association of Mining and Exploration Companies and supported by coal mining billionaire and AGW denier Gina Rinehart.[5]
Monckton on Climate Change
Christopher Monckton has written many articles critical of current climate change science. In one article written for the Science and Public Policy Institute, Monckton criticized AlGore's film, "An Inconvenient Truth", alleging that the film used very few facts, most of which were "substantially inaccurate".[6] Monckton's critique came on the heels of a British lawsuit in which a school official sued the British government for distributing the film in public schools.[7] A subsequent response from British scientists hit out at the judge for "misleading the public by ruling that Gore had made "errors"" when they considered the movie "presented an exceptionally high standard of scientific accuracy".[8]
Monckton admitted in an interview with conservative radio host Glenn Beck, that he played a role in the court hearings by prompting a friend to fund the court case in order to "fight back against this tide of unscientific freedom-destroying nonsense, which is what global warming is really all about".[9] Prior to this it had been revealed that a Scottish quarry magnate had bankrolled the legal action against An Inconvenient Truth via a fringe UK right-wing political party, the New Party.[10]
"Lord" Monckton also funded the distribution in British schools of the film, "The Great Global WarmingSwindle," as part of a "counter-campaign to undermine the scientific consensus on climate change." [11] The broadcasting watchdog Ofcom has found that The Great Global Warming Swindle broke its guidelines on impartiality [12]
Monckton also wrote a controversial article for the American Physical Society's newsletter refuting the IPCC's conclusion that climate change is a largely human produced phenomenon. The APS, however, headlined the article with the disclaimer that "its conclusions are in disagreement with the overwhelming opinion of the world scientific community. The Council of the American Physical Society disagrees with this article's conclusions."[13] and ""The following article has not undergone any scientific peer review, since that is not normal procedure for American Physical Society newsletters" [14]. Despite this, Christopher Monckton continues to claim that the opinion piece has been peer-reviewed and there is a conspiracy to cover this up [15].
The "Monckton Manoeuvre"
Journalist Peter Hadfield coined the term "Monckton Manoeuvre" (alternate: Monckton Maneuver) to describe Monckton's tactic of changing his position when shown to be wrong and pretending that his position hasn't changed.[16]
Scientists must be religious
According to Monckton, scientists "perhaps" should be required to certify that they are Christian belong to a religion before they are allowed to practice:
| “ | Perhaps, therefore, no one should be allowed to practice in any of the sciences, particularly in those sciences that have become the mere political footballs of the leading pressure-groups, unless he can certify that he adheres to one of those major religions – Christianity outstanding among them – that preach the necessity of morality, and the reality of the distinction between that which is so and that which is not. For science without the morality that perhaps religion alone can give is nothing.[17] | ” |
Dishonesty
House Of Lords membership claim
Despite the passing of the 1999 House Of Lords Act (which stripped hereditary peers of instant admission to the House Of Lords) Christopher Monckton has claimed that he is "a member of the Upper House of the United Kingdom legislature"[18]. More recently he has claimed that he is a member "without the right to sit or vote"[19]. The House Of Lords themselves state that "Christopher Monckton is not and has never been a Member of the House of Lords. There is no such thing as a 'non-voting' or 'honorary' member."[20] When Monckton persisted with the lie, the House of Lords took the unprecedented step of publishing an open letter to him, demanding that he cease and desist.[2]
Nobel Laureate claim
Christopher Monckton claims on the website of the Science and Public Policy Institute that:
His contribution to the IPCC's Fourth Assessment Report in 2007 - the correction of a table inserted by IPCC bureaucrats that had overstated tenfold the observed contribution of the Greenland and West Antarctic ice sheets to sea-level rise - earned him the status of Nobel Peace Laureate. His Nobel prize pin, made of gold recovered from a physics experiment, was presented to him by the Emeritus Professor of Physics at the University of Rochester, New York, USA -SPPInstitute website[21]
When Christopher Monckton visited Australia in early 2010 he conceeded that it was "it was a joke, a joke" and "never meant to be taken seriously". The Sydney Morning Herald noted that despite this, he had made the same claim with a "straight face" on the Alan Jones show one day prior, and the claim remained on the SPPInstitute website[22] where it could still be found six months later.
George Monbiot defamation claim
In 2007 a paragraph appeared on Monckton's Wikipedia page claiming he had won £50,000 as a result of an article George Monbiot allegedly wrote. As this was clearly untrue, George Monbiot wrote to Monckton asking why somebody claiming "who identifies himself as [Monckton]" was adding fictitious details to the page. A typically evasive Monckton refused to answer directly, and eventually wrote to Monbiot's editors demanding Monbiot cease emailing him pertinent questions.[23]
Policy work
Christopher Monckton, who worked for the British government between 1982-1986, has previously claimed to be a "chief policy advisor" to former British PM Margaret Thatcher, and is frequently introduces himself as her "chief science advisor" when interviewed by the conservative media.[24]
Christopher Monckton has been quoted as saying "I gave her advice on science as well as other policy from 1982-1986, two years before the IPCC Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was founded", that he was "the only one who knew any science" and that "it was I who – on the prime minister's behalf – kept a weather eye on the official science advisers to the government, from the chief scientific adviser downward".
Bob Ward in the Guardian invesitgated these claims and found them to be false, noting "that this novel and important innovation by Viscount Monckton [bringing a computer to Downing Street and calculating that global warming was, in fact, happening] was not recognised by the current minister for science and universities, David Willetts, who was also a member of the prime minister's policy unit between 1984 and 1986. In 1986, "Two Brains" wrote a prize-winning essay on the role of the unit, but mysteriously omitted to mention Monckton's historic contribution."[25]
2011 Swastikas for those who accept climate science
At the right wing American Freedom Alliance conference "Big Footprint: Is Green the New Tyranny" in Los Angeles in June 2011, as a grand finale, Monckton displayed on the giant conference screen a large Nazi swastika next to a quote from Adolf Hitler. A few seconds later came another quote, next to another large swastika, from Australia's climate change advisor Professor Ross Garnaut, which suggested that "on a balance of probabilities, the mainstream science is right" on human-caused climate change.
Professor Garnaut's opinion was, according to the presiding hereditary peer, a "fascist point of view".[26]
Monckton later described himself as "catastrophically stupid" for having made the comparison.[27] Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard described Monckton's actions and remarks as "very offensive and grossly unacceptable".
2009: 'Hitler Youth' tag for climate activists
During the Copenhagen Climate Summit in late 2009, where Christopher Monckton was head of the right-wing CFACT delegation, his press conference was interrupted by climate change activists from Sustain US. Monckton responded by calling them "Hitler Youth" and "Nazis".
The next day, when confronted by the same individuals to explain his actions, Monckton repeated his slur and told them "So I think you should all just chill out and accept that if you ever behave like that again I will call you that again in public. You're already now known and your faces around the world are known as members of the Hitler youth. You people do as much damage to the poor as the Hitler youth did. And you've got to accept that if you're not willing to take it, then you shouldn't give it. And don't go around invading people's meetings again."[28]
John Abraham presentation
On May 31 2010, John P. Abraham, an associate professor at the University of St. Thomas uploaded an in-depth rebuttal of Monckton's lecture entitled "A Scientist Replies To Christopher Monckton" in the form of an online presentation.[29]
Monckton's first response was to personally attack John Abraham,[30] accusing him of being "snake-like", of having the face of "an overcooked prawn" and an "irritatingly nasal tone", while at the same time accusing him of being "venomously ad-hominem" and belonging to a "Bible college" (despite the fact Monckton and the University are both Catholic). Monckton also stated that his presentation was full of "artful puerilities" and threatened to "[haul Abraham] up before whatever academic panel his Bible college can muster, to answer disciplinary charges of willful academic dishonesty amounting to gross professional misconduct unbecoming a member of his profession."
Monckton corresponded with the University of St. Thomas, outlining that he perceived the presentation as "academically dishonest".[31] The University replied that Monckton was entitled to disagree with Abraham, but that they were standing by him.
During the course of the (largely one-way) correspondence Monckton also threatened to litigate for libel, to speak to the University's benefactors to withdraw funding, and demanded that the University remove all traces of the presentation from their servers or he would release all correspondence and publish a "book" of criticism of John Abraham's presentation on the 10th of July.
On 24 June, Monckton appeared on the Alex Jones show and charged that the head of the University, Father Dennis Dease, was a "creep", that John Abraham was a "wretched little man" and that the University itself was a "half-assed Bible college".[32] In response, the University sent a legal letter stating they were "appalled by [the] disparaging, outrageous and defamatory comments regarding the University of St. Thomas, Father Dennis Dease and Professor John Abraham, especially the comments made during a TV interview on the 24th of June". [33] Monckton responded by denying any remembrance of the comments or interview,[34] even though he had only made the interview two days prior. Eventually he admitted recording an interview for Alex Jones, and demanded to know which comments they perceived as defamatory.
By 10 July the University had refused to fold to Monckton's demands, and true to his word he published an 86 page attack on John Abraham (and to a lesser extent, his presentation) on the popular global warming denial website Watts Up With That.[35] The response was criticised for being a "gish-gallop",[36] and "too silly and too incredibly long to be picked apart piece by piece".[37]
Monckton also encouraged Watts' readers to flood Father Dennis Dease's email inbox with demands for the presentation to be removed and for Abraham to be dismissed (for daring to criticism him). For this action, Monckton has been widely criticised for trying to bully the University with yet-to-be-enacted legal threats and unsolicited emails.[38]
Despite multiple threats to the contrary, no legal action has been taken by Christopher Monckton against Prof. Abraham or the university.
Peter Hadfield debate
In early 2012 Christopher Monckton penned rebuttals to journalist
of his work for Watts Up With That. Anthony Watts agreed to publish Hadfield's rebuttals on his website and a debate broke out. After a couple of posts, in which Hadfield made numerous references to the sources that Monckton was misquoting and demonstrated why he believed Monckton to be wrong, Monckton mysteriously pulled out, claiming he was "too busy" to take part in a debate of "inconsequentialities"- an intriguing claim as he doesn't have a real job and the "inconsequentialities" in question concerned climate sensitivity, the main thrust of Monckton's argument. Peter Hadfield responded with an "Open Letter To Christopher Monckton" urging him to return to the debate[39]. No response was received. Monckton has found the time to pen numerous piece for Watts Up With That and travel the world questioning President Obama's birth certificate (see "birtherism"), but still refuses to engage Hadfield.
Birther
Monckton is a staunch supporter of Sheriff Joe Arpaio, and has claimed that President Obama's birth certificate is fraudulent[40]. In September 2012 Monckton claimed the odds that President Obama's birth certificate was real were "One in 62,500,000,000,000,000,000"[41]. To date these claims have yet to be peer reviewed.
Homophobe
- He called AIDS and other diseases the "wages" of gay promiscuity
- He called for the regular screening of the population for AIDS and the life-long quarantine of all carriers.[43]
- He dismissively referred to LGBT people as "QWERTYs" after the letters on the keyboard.
- He claimed that gays only want to get married so that they can adopt children, which is unfair to children.
Other
Monckton is a supporter of the right wing pressure group, the Freedom Association,[44] and was a co-founder of the Campaign for a Free Britain (now defunct).

Chief Policy Adviser: Lord Monckton, UK: -- Christopher, Third Viscount Monckton of Brenchley, was Special Advisor to Margaret Thatcher as UK Prime Minister from 1982 to 1986. On leaving 10 Downing Street, he established a successful specialist consultancy company, giving technical advice to corporations and governments. Lord Monckton’s knowledge of the science and politics behind “global warming” is noted for its breadth and depth. He has given speeches, lectures, and university seminars in the US and all over the world, is widely consulted by governments, corporations, and professors, and has authored numerous papers on the climate issue for the layman, as well as for the scientific journals.
Many of his papers are published at www.scienceandpublicpolicy.org. His lecture to undergraduates at the Cambridge Union Society on climate change has been released by SPPI as Apocalypse? NO! Currently Lord Monckton has written another major paper, Climate Trends Reconsidered, which demonstrates the startling and ever-growing gap between official predictions of disaster and real-world observations and measurements, all of which – unlike the predictions – are comfortably within the natural variability of the climate.

Christopher Monckton, 3rd Viscount Monckton of Brenchley (born 1952) is "a caricature English peer",[2] sacked former deputy leader of the United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP)[3] and a climate change denier. He constitutes an excellent argument in favour of revolutionary socialism.
One Guardian commenter said "If he didn't exist you really would have to invent him." It's not entirely clear the amusement gained would be worth it... wait,

[edit]Science
In his role as UKIP science spokesman, Monckton said that they would cut funding for climate science unless there arose "sufficient evidence" to change his mind. He also said that health risks associated with excessive salt consumption are merely "unjustifiable fears" and compared embryonic stem cell research to "the killing of very small children."[4] Monckton is a big promoter of the global warming conspiracy theory in which Barack Obama will cedeUS sovereignty to the United Nations, which will then enact a communist world government.[5]

Lord Monckton Warns of New World Government]
His views on disease aren't much better. He wrote an article entitled The Myth of Heterosexual AIDS for a 1987 edition of American Spectator, stating quite clearly:[6]
| “”There is only one way to stop AIDS. That is to screen the entire population regularly and to quarantine all carriers of the disease for life. Every member of the population should be blood-tested every month ... all those found to be infected with the virus, even if only as carriers, should be isolated compulsorily, immediately, and permanently. |
He has since conceded that this would presently be unfeasible, but not that it would in any way have been a bad idea.
At least he considers alternative medicine should only be NHS-funded after it has been proven clinically.[4]
According to him, scientists "perhaps" should be required to certify that they are Christian belong to a religion before they are allowed to practice. No kidding:
[edit]It's peer-reviewed!
Monckton likes to claim he has "peer-reviewed" publications under his belt. What he's usually referring to when he says this is an article he had published in the American Physical Society's "Forum on Physics and Society" issue of its newsletter. In fact, the first sentence of the article is part of an editor's note reading "The following article has not undergone any scientific peer review since that is not normal procedure for American Physical Society newsletters."[8] Not that it would have gotten past peer review,[9] as just about every sentence contained an error.[10]
In an October 2012 opinion column on World Net Daily in which he insists climate change had nothing to do with Hurricane Sandy, he claimed to be "an appointed expert reviewer for the forthcoming 'Fifth Assessment Report' to be published by the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change."[11] Blogger Graham Readfearn contacted the IPCC secretariat on how one is "appointed" to be an "expert reviewer." The reply he received follows:
| “”Anyone can register as an expert reviewer on the open online registration systems set up by the working groups. All registrants that provide the information requested and confirm their scientific expertise via a self-declaration of expertise are accepted for participation in the review. They are invited to list publications, but that is not a requirement and the section can be left blank when registering. There is no appointment.[12] |
[edit]I'm a Lord really, m'Lord
| “”Nice to see the two logos side by side: one can see that in Monckton's version the chains are unhinged and there is empty space beneath the crown. Can anyone explain the symbolism? |

Left: the House of Lords insignia. Right: Viscount Monckton's insignia. Monckton's is clearly completely original and not mimicking the Lords insignia in any way.
Monckton's father Gilbert was one of those kicked out in 1999 when the hereditary complement of the House of Lords was cut to 92, thus leaving Christopher's status as Viscount of Brenchley a matter only of interest to the aristocracy nerd contingent on Wikipedia. Since Christopher inherited the title in 2006, he has consistently misrepresented himself as being a member of the House of Lords. He has various pseudolegaltheories as to why this is the case, usually revolving around the notion that a hereditary peerage can only be withdrawn by the Crown on an individual basis, as the letter patent was granted on an individual basis.[13]This may well be true, but has nothing to do with whether said hereditary peer gets an automatic seat in the upper house of the Parliament of the United Kingdom.[14] The main point appears to be to represent himself in other countries as having governmental power and status that he does not when talking up climate change denial.
The House has asked that he desist in his frequent habit of implying, or outright claiming, to be a member in any way whatsoever. They have also requested, rather forcefully, that he stop using a personal insignia closely resembling the portcullis insignia of the House of Lords, and are presently '"taking steps with a view to ensuring that Lord Monckton does not in future either claim to be a member of the House or use the parliamentary emblem or any variant thereof."[15] Buckingham Palace (who control use of the insignia) did not directly comment on the claims, but just happened to point an enquiring journalist at the relevant trademark laws and the possible penalties for their violation.[16]
The House finally got fed up and wrote an open letter to Monckton in July 2011, telling him in unusually blunt language that "you are not and have never been a Member of the House of Lords."[17]
It should be noted that while Monckton is not a member of the House of Lords, he's still a hereditary peer and "Lord Monckton" is one of the correct ways to address him.[18]
[edit]Monckton vs academia
| “”It is particularly hard [to challenge climate scientists], if like me, you have no scientific qualification to do so.[19] |
[edit]Monckton vs Rachel Pinker
Before Tim Lambert of Deltoid fame appeared at a live debate with Monckton, he noticed that Monckton had been quote mining a paper by atmospheric scientist Rachel Pinker and her colleagues by using a figure they calculated for surface solar radiation to stand in for total climate sensitivity. Lambert then played a recording of her letter explaining Monckton's misuse of her work during the debate.[20] However, that didn't stop Monckton from quote mining the paper again in Congressional testimony, which prompted another response from Pinker and co-author Ellsworth Dutton.[21]
[edit]Monckton vs John Abraham
John Abraham, a professor of thermal engineering at the University of St. Thomas, Minnesota, created and published on-line a presentation[22]debunking a talk delivered by Monckton in October 2009 at Bethel University in Minnesota. When the rebuttal gained attention, Monckton wrote a hilariously lengthy and pompous reply (466 questions!),[23][24] accusing Abraham of libel (among other things) and demanding a retraction, an apology and large donations to a charity. To top it off, in an interview with Alex Jones (yes, that one!), Monckton kept it classy by calling the university a "half-arsed Catholic Bible college" and its president a "creep."[25]
Abraham's laconic reply makes the whole thing reminiscent of the Lenski affair. In its entirety:
| “”I am replying to your letter of June 10, 2010, on behalf of myself and, at his request Fr. Dennis Dease, President of the University of St. Thomas. I stand by my original position. Point and counterpoint are the standard in academic discourse. |

[edit]Monckton vs Peter Hadfield
In February 2011, Peter Hadfield debunked Monckton's presentation's misrepresentations point by point in a series of YouTube videos under his accountpotholer54. Monckton replied on Watts Up With That (WUWT) to a comment by a WUWT reader briefly summarizing some of Hadfield's points. Peter Hadfield approached the owner of WUWT, Anthony Watts, about having a debate on the website, and Watts agreed. Monckton was given the opening statement[27]. Hadfield's response was published under the same article in an update. Monckton, despite promising to Watts that he would respond, never did. After a few months, Hadfield and others began calling out Monckton on his rather obvious retreat from the debate. Watts conjured up a reason to pull the plug on the debate, conveniently excusing Monckton from having to reply. A comment moderator at WUWT then announced a policy that any comments mentioning Hadfield would be deleted[28].
[edit]Monckton vs Lawrence Torcello
Lawrence Torcello, an assistant professor of philosophy at the Rochester Institute of Technology, wrote an article addressing climate change denialists as "criminally and morally negligent."[29] Many conservative outlets including Breitbart and Infowars misrepresented his article, instead saying that he had called for climate change denialists to be Jailed. Monckton wrote a letter to the Provost of the university asking if he was "fit and proper person to hold any academic post at the Institute" and calling for action to be taken against the professor.[30][31]
[edit]Monckton: The last refuge for the deniers
With the Climategate brouhaha debunked and plagiarized "research" like the Wegman Report discredited, Republicans got really desperate. In 2010, Monckton was called as the only witness for the GOP at a subcommittee hearing on climate science. During Monckton's pathetic testimony, Rep. Jay Inslee (D-Badass) issued a definitive smackdown right in front of the entire committee, saying:
| “”And I would note there is a dispute over whether we actually landed on the moon, and there is a dispute about whether the Earth is round, and there is a dispute about gravity in some places. |
Inslee went on later in the testimony:
| “”You come here, you call yourself a Lord to try to convince the world to ignore something that threatens our grandkids, and you're not even a Lord.[32] |
On top of that, twenty-one climate scientists issued a lengthy rebuttal to Monckton's testimony.[33]

IPCC Report Chairs, Member of Exculpatory Panel on Email Scandal Re-establish Climate Science’s Broad Knowledge, Urgency to Act
CLICK HERE to read the full official transcript of this hearing.
Even after months of personal attacks against climate scientists stemming from a manufactured scandal over stolen emails, the underlying science behind the need to stem the tide of heat-trapping emissions remains solid. To explain what we know about climate change, and why and how we know it, Chairman Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) and the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming hosted top-level American climate scientists at a congressional hearing on Thursday, May 6, 2010.
The scientists addressed the claims of deniers head-on. Thursday’s panel featured a member of the investigative panel convened by the University of East Anglia and led by Lord Ron Oxburgh to review the stolen emails from that school’s Climactic Research Unit. The “Oxburgh Inquiry” exonerated the scientists who were attacked following the emails, saying they “saw no evidence of any deliberate scientific malpractice in any of the work.”
The hearing also included three scientists involved in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reports, which have also been attacked by climate science deniers.
The Republican witness on the panel was Lord Christopher Walter Monckton, 3rd Viscount Monckton of Brenchley.

[edit]Homophobe
Monckton, who married in middle age and has no children, and whose coat of arms features a camp pink portcullis, has made a series of inflammatory homophobic statements about gay people.
- He claimed that gay men have up to 20,000 sexual partners over their "short, miserable lives" (surveys show that they have the same number of sexual partners, on average, as straight people, viz. six)[34]
- He called AIDS and other diseases the "wages" of gay promiscuity
- He called for the regular screening of the population for AIDS and the life-long quarantine of all carriers.[35]
- He dismissively referred to LGBT people as "QWERTYs" after the letters on the keyboard.
- He claimed that gays only want to get married so that they can adopt children, which is unfair to children.
- Despite gays only wanting to marry to adopt children, gay rights are actually a communist plot to destroy families. Monkton believes Obama devised this dastardly plot on the plane trip to Hawaii, following his birth in Mombasa, Kenya.[36]
[edit]Uninvited spokesman for Burma at Doha
Monckton's behavior and pronouncements have earned him the nickname "potty peer" in various corners of the blogosphere. Consider the episode in which Monckton found himself booted from the Doha Climate Change talks for taking the unoccupied Burmese delegate's chair and addressing the speaker for a minute from the microphone. Earlier he had been seen dressed in traditional Arab garb handing out climate change denial leaflets.[37]
[edit]Web 2.0
Monckton is a keen user of the Internet, an IP address geolocating to just near him having added all manner of strange claims (e.g., that the Guardianhad paid him £50,000 in settlement of a defamation claim) to the Christopher Monckton and George Monbiot articles on Wikipedia.[38] Monbiot, a long-term critic of Monckton, asked him what was up with that and got a series of nonsensical evasions in response.[39]
He is also a fan of using sock puppets.[40]
[edit]And a Nobel
Monckton has claimed since 2007 to be a Nobel Peace Prize winner. When cornered, he said he was merely joking, although he had claimed several hours before to be a Nobel laureate in apparent seriousness;[41] the claim is still present on the staff page of the Science and Public Policy Institute.[42]

[edit]Birther
| “”The probability that the “birth certificate” and other Obama identity documents are genuine is just 1 in 75 sextillion.[43] |
Monckton also is a Birther,[44] though he claims not to be.[45] Monkton has since dropped all pretenses and now states that Barack Obama was born in Mombasa, Kenya.[46]
[edit]Maggie's bag-man
In the 1980s Monckton somehow squeezed his way into Margaret Thatcher's Number 10 Policy Unit[wp] and has claimed that he was her scientific advisor. That claim was shot down by John Selwyn Gummer, Environment Minister in Thatcher's cabinet, who referred to Monckton as a "bag carrier" whose views were taken seriously by nobody. [47] His name was also conspicuously absent from Thatcher's memoirs, The Downing Street Years. [48]
[edit]Ban the Quran
Lord Monckton proposed banning public recitations of portions of the Qu'ran under Anglo-American jurisprudence which criminalizes incite to murder.[49]
[edit]Eternity puzzle
Apart from being a repellent bog creature with buckets of cash, Monckton is also an amateur mathematician. He invented a puzzle called The Eternity Puzzle and challenged anyone to solve it, offering a £500,000 prize and expecting it would take many years to solve, if ever. Embarrassingly only a year later had to pay the prize money out of his own funds to two mathematicians who solved it using a computer program. Monckton claimed that the earlier-than-expected solution had forced him to sell his 67-room house, Crimonmogate, to pay the prize — a true Pyrrhic victory.
A new version of the puzzle has since been released, called Eternity II. This new version was designed with the help of the mathematicians who scooped up the prize for the first version, and with the assurance that the new version cannot be solved with a simple computer program.
[edit]So, what's with his eyes?
Graves' disease,[wp] the same thing Marty Feldman had. There are a lot of reasons for which Monckton should be mocked, but his physical appearance is not among them.

ThisDeSmog UKepic history post reveals the identity of the man behind Lord Monckton’s eccentric climate denial.
Lord Monckton [3] hoisted himself into centre stage of the denier circus in November 2006 with a double-page feature in the then respectable Sunday Telegraph, in which he claimed :{climate science was “a Sci-Fi panic:(style="background-color:#ffff66;"):}:”[4].
The eccentric Scottish peer would boast [5]: “In the climate change debate, one figure is real. The Sunday Telegraph’s website registered more than 127,000 hits [5] in response to last week’s article revealing that the UN had minimised the sun’s role in changing past and present climate, persisted in proven errors and used unsound data, questionable graphs and meretricious maths to exaggerate future warming.”
The newspaper article represented a remarkable return after illness to the media spotlight for a man apparently addicted to publicity and the adoration of the crowd. As the satirical magazine Private Eye reported at the time, the article was “largely incomprehensible” [6].
Untidy Factoids
Tim Lambert, of the Deltoid science blog, was even more dismissive. “The main problem with his article is that he doesn’t know what he’s writing about it. He offers up an untidy pile of factoids [7], some of which are true but out of context, some of which are not at all true, and some of which he seems to have conjured up out of thin air.”
Prior to this news splash, the Viscount had appeared in the press in 2000 as the inventor of the Eternity puzzle [8] and the man who promised £1m to the first person to find its solution. Two Cambridge mathematicians were quick to claim the prize. Monckton at first claimed the payout forced him to sell his 67-room mansion [8] - and then later that he hadlied to get more publicity for the puzzle [9].
Many years earlier, Monckton had worked as a junior advisor in Margaret Thatcher’s highly politicised Number 10 Policy Unit, although he failed to get a mention in her autobiography years later. He claimed to have introduced the first computer to government.
And, he also claimed to have been the first to persuade the PM to take the issue of climate change seriously. It may have been this remarkable and totally unsubstantiated claim [10] that persuaded Patience Wheatcroft, the then editor of the *Sunday Telegraph* [11], to take his rambling feature seriously.
As it would happen, Monckton’s sister Rose is married to Lord Lawson’s eldest son Dominic [12]. But both men deny that it was Lawson who had persuaded his in-law to adopt the well-worn and tragic claims that scientists had conspired to construct an international conspiracy [13] in order to support the case for a Communist global government.
Monckton’s Denial
So how exactly did it come to be that Lord Monckton should become the spokesperson for the more eclectic climate deniers – flown around the world by ExxonMobil-funded think tanks like the ominous sounding Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow [14] (CFACT) – to attack scientists?
This is how Monckton himself takes up the story: “Well, I didn’t decide. It was all accidentally; I was rung up by the chief executive of a boutique finance house.”
According to Monckton, the mystery chief executive said: “Look, all our investors want to pile in on this green investment stuff but I want to know: is there a problem with the climate?”
Monckton replied: “Oh yes, I advised Margaret Thatcher on it 25 years ago and it was quite clear then that the scientists were worried and I recommended to find out more.”
CEO: “[We] would like you to find out more.”
Monckton “spent a month on his dime” investigating the science and sent the investor a 40-page report. It concluded that climate change did not represent a serious threat.
The man called a few days later and demanded: “Why should I pay any attention to this?”
Monckton: “Well, you asked me to do this, I gave it my best shot, you’ve got all my evidence there.”
CEO: “I’ve consulted a dozen people, all of them more eminent than you…”
Monckton:“Well, thank you very much.”
CEO: “And they all tell me that this is a real problem, this is the worst problem humanity has ever faced and we have to do everything we can to stop this and you’vesaid: ‘no problem at all’.”
Monckton: ‘WellI don’t say there is no problem at all, I say it’s not likely that there is much of a problem and even if it were it would be cheaper to let it happen.”
CEO: “Well, we are going to go with you and not theother 11.”
Monckton: “Why is that?”
CEO: “You’re the only one who provided any evidence, and you’ve provided 40 pages of it. The others all told me that I had to believe: I didn’t get where I am today by believing stuff.”
Generous Financier
Monckton has always refused to give up the name of the financier who paid him generously to investigate climate science who and set him on the path of attacking scientists in talks in the United States and Australia ever since.
However, an investigation by DeSmog UK has established that the mystery man is Edgar Miller, a right-wing American who claims to have significant influence in the Conservative Party and who boasts of having made a fortune from early investments in shale gas development [15].
Miller was born in Bailey County, Texas [16], but moved to Britain almost 40 years ago. He is a serial investor and entrepreneur, having directed companies with names like Palladian Software Limited, Maxwell Espinosa and UK Israel Business.
The climate denier is a political animal, claiming to have met Margaret Thatcher “on several occasions.” He is also close to Peter Lilley MP and Andrew Tyrie – the unsung hero of Tory climate denial.
“I used to be more connected to the Conservative Party. I used to work up in there with policy but I quickly learnt that it’s a mug’s game because most politicians are not interested in anyone’s help,” he told a female journalist over dinner.
Moderately Wealthy
“When you are talking to these people, they are either so ignorant that they didn’t understand what you were saying or they were just so ego driven, or both, that they figured they know all the answers.”
Miller is moderately wealthy, having bought a London townhouse in Notting Hill for £725,000 in 2000. He used to drive an E-Type Jag until he had an accident, apparently attempting to impress a female passenger.
Miller will become significant again in our history of climate denial – supporting Lord Lawson at the Global Warming Policy Foundation and speaking candidly about his falling out with the new Conservative leadership.
Up next in theDeSmog UKepic history series, we detail how a Channel 4 programme on climate change was edited to promote climate denial.
READ THE EXTENDED EXTRACTS FROM MONCKTON’S INTERVIEW
So, both then you wrote an article in 2006 – in November, you say? So, when did you decide to get really involved in the debate?
Well, I didn’t decide. It was all accidentally; I was rung up by the chief executive of a boutique finance house, who said: ‘Look, all our investors want to pile in on this green investment stuff, but I want to know: is there a problem with the climate?’
And I said, ‘Oh yes, I advised Margaret Thatcher on it 25 years ago and it was quite clear then that the scientists were worried, and I recommended to find out more.’ And he said, ‘I would like you to find out more.’
And I spent a month on his dime and had a look, and sent him a 40-page report, and he rang up a few days later and said, ‘Why should I pay any attention to this?’ I said, ‘Well, you asked me to do this: I gave it my best shot; you’ve got all my evidence there.’
And he said, ‘I’ve consulted a dozen people, all of them more eminent than you’ – and I said, ‘Well thank you very much.’ He said, ‘And they all tell me that this is a real problem, this is the worst problem humanity has ever faced and we have to do everything we can to stop this, and you’vesaid: “no problem at all”.’
I said, ‘Well,I don’t say there is no problem at all; I say it’s not likely that there is much of a problem and, even if it were, it would be cheaper to let it happen.’ And he said, ‘Well, we are going to go with you and not the other 11.’ I said, ‘Why is that?’ He said, ‘You’re the only one who provided any evidence, and you’ve provided 40 pages of it,’ he said, ‘the others all told me that I had to believe,’ he said, ‘I didn’t get where I am today by believing stuff.’
So, do you remember the name of this guy who contacted you?
Ah, I think I ought not tell you that because it was confidential. Although, he did at the end say, ‘Can I send this paper to the editor of theSunday Times?’ She then rang up and rather tested it and said, ‘How can I print 40 pages of equations in a paper?’ And I said, ‘I don’t think that was the idea; I think he wanted to suggest to your mind that there might be another side to this story and suggested I might write it for her (sic). I can do plain English as well; I don’t just write in equations.’ ‘Oh!’ she said, ‘Well, could yousend me over 1,000 words?’ So, I sent her a 1,000 words sample…

more fun at the Mad Mad World of GOP climate science
Republican Joe Barton introduced Monckton to a U.S. House committee hearing as an expert witness on climate change
Barton (R-TX) describes Christopher Monckton
"as being generally regarded as one of the most knowledgeable, if not the most knowledgeable, experts on the skeptic side."
Monckton is NOT A SCIENTIST
Viscount Monckton as he likes to be called, who the GOP loves to call as an expert witness on climate change, is not a scientist of any kind. His only higher education is in journalism. Monckton is a complete charlatan, who has been completely and devastatingly debunked on many occasions by real scientists.
The GOP has at least twice had him as an expert witness on climate change, at important House Committee hearings.
Monckton had been told twice by the British House of Lords, to stop claiming he is a member. Yet he intoduces himself to U.S. congress as an emissary from Parliament. He embellishes all his fake temperature charts, etc and other publications, with a very close facsimlie of the seal of Parliament, the crowned porcullis. They have told him to stop using their seal.
He claims to have discovered cures for HIV, the flu, the cold, Graves disease. He claims to have been a science advisor to Margaret Thatcher. He never was.
Monckton is also a "birther"
He is looney beyond belief, IMO. And he is well paid by the Koch brothers and others, to spread confusion. Monckton is a showman, very persuasive in front of an audience and knows how to sound scientific, while spreading complete nonsense.
Barton and Inhofe get more oil money than any other legislators, in the House and Senate, respectively.

Credentials
According to George Monbiot at *The Guardian*, Monckton “has a degree in classics and a diploma in journalism and, as far as I can tell, no further qualifications.” [1]
Background
Christopher Walter Monckton, the third Viscount Monckton of Brenchely, is a British politician affiliated with the UK Independence Party. He was a former advisor to UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and was a “special advisor to Thatcher's Downing Street policy unit” in the 1980s.
Monckton's first claim to fame was his creation of the “eternity puzzle,” a board game that Monckton believed was so challenging that he offered 1 million euros to the first person to solve it. To his surprise, the eternity puzzle was solved in 16 months.
While Monckton's educational background is in journalism, he has recently been credited by many think tanks as an expert in the field of global warming.[2]
For example, his profile on the Science and Public Policy Institute (SPPI) states: [3]
“His [Monckton's] contribution to the IPCC's Fourth Assessment Report in 2007 - the correction of a table inserted by IPCC bureaucrats that had overstated tenfold the observed contribution of the Greenland and West Antarctic ice sheets to sea-level rise - earned him the status of Nobel Peace Laureate. His Nobel prize pin, made of gold recovered from a physics experiment, was presented to him by the Emeritus Professor of Physics at the University of Rochester, New York, USA.”
Monckton later conceded that claiming to be a Nobel Peace Laureate was “a joke, a joke” and “never meant to be taken seriously.” But the above claim remains on the SPPI website to this day (as of Oct, 2011).
Stance on Climate Change
“Yes, there is a greenhouse effect. Yes, CO2 contributes to it. Yes, it causes warming. Yes, we emit CO2. Yes, warming will result. But not a lot.” [4]
“Why haven't air or sea temperatures turned out as the UN's models predicted? Because the science is bad, the 'consensus' is wrong, and Herr Professor Ludwig Boltzmann, FRS, was as right about energy-to-temperature as he was about atoms.” [5]
Key Quotes
” [T]here is only one way to stop AIDS. That is to screen the entire population regularly and to quarantine all carriers of the disease for life. Every member of the population should be blood-tested every month […] all those found to be infected with the virus, even if only as carriers, should be isolated compulsorily, immediately, and permanently.” [6]
“The right response to the non-problem of global warming is to have the courage to do nothing.” [20]
“The only scientists who are capable of coming to a conclusion as barking mad as that [that climate change is man-made] are computer modelists. And these are typically zitty teenagers sitting in dark rooms with a can of Coca-Cola and too many doughnuts and playing on their Xbox 360.”[24]
Key Deeds
April, 2013
In early April, Monckton arrived in New Zealand for a speaking tour sponsored by the Climate Realists Network titled the “Climate of Freedom Tour.” According to the event description, Monckton will speak on “Climate Change and its underlying idealogical framework, the United Nations Agenda 21 and the threat this is to freedom.” Agenda 21(:{PDF:(style="margin:0px;padding:0px"):}: available here)is a plan created by the United Nations with the primary purpose of promoting sustainable development. A full list of Monckton's tour venues and dates is available online.
An article in *The New Zealand Herald* published near the start of his tour questioned Monckton's motives and qualifications to speak on climate science. The article suggests that Monckton's views are not based on science: James Renwick, associate professor of physical geography at Victoria University, told the paper that “[Monckton] has no training and has studiously avoided learning anything about science[…]” [21]
Monckton responded to the letter and threatened the New Zealand Herald, saying that he would send a complaint to the Press Council if the Herald did not publish his email or correct the article's “factual inaccuracies.” He also claims that the scientists quoted in the original article were being “malevolently inaccurate about climate 'science'.” While Monckton's letter was published by the New Zealand Climate Science Coalition on April 3, it does not appear the Heraldhas responded. [22]
Michele Hewitson interviewed Monckton in a separate article for:{ :(style="margin:0px;padding:0px"):}:*the New Zealand Herald* on April 6 where, she reported, that he “He had got the huff and walked out of the interview” after she brought up the episode when Monckton called youth activists in Copenhagen members of the “Hitler Youth.”
Early on in his tour, Monckton also appeared on ZBTV's Leighton Smith Show to talk about “climate change and public interest in it.” According to Monckton:
“The direct effect of putting CO2 into the atmosphere is not really going to be much more than 1 degree celsius of warming per doubling of CO2 concentration. And that is the generally accepted figure, of which only half, or about 0.5 or 0.6C would come through in the first 100 or 150 years. During which you're doubling the CO2 concentration.”
Monckton also made a number of other claims recording article sea ice during the recording, all of which are discussed and reviewed here. According to Monckton: [23]
- There was less sea ice in the 1920s and 1930s than now.
- Arctic sea ice has only declined for a few weeks in summer.
- Water can't get underneath the Antarctic ice sheet.
- Increases in Antarctic sea ice make up for half of the losses in the Arctic
- Arctic sea ice set a new record high in March, 2013
May 21 - 23, 2012
Christopher Monckton was a speaker at the Heartland Institute's 7th International Conference on Climate Change (ICCC7).
DeSmogBlogresearched the co-sponsors behind Heartland's :{:{:{ICCC:(style="margin:0px;padding:0px"):}:7:(style="margin:0px;padding:0px"):}::(style="margin:0px;padding:0px"):}: and found that they had collectively received over $67 million from ExxonMobil, the Koch Brothersand the conservative Scaife family foundations.
July, 2011
The House of Lords have had an ongoing dispute with Monckton over his membership, as authorities have said Monckton is not and never has been a member and that there is no such thing as a non-voting or honorary member of the House. [7]
In July 2011 the House took the “unprecedented step” [8] of publishing online a cease and desist letter (:{PDF:(style="margin:0px;padding:0px"):}:) to Monckton from the Clerk of the Parliaments, which concluded:[9]
“I am publishing this letter on the parliamentary website so that anybody who wishes to check whether you are a Member of the House of Lords can view this official confirmation that you are not.”
June, 2010
John P. Abraham, an associate professor at the University of St. Thomas, made an online presentation thoroughly refuting Monckton's Oct 14th, 2009 presentation at Bethel University. [10]
Monckton's response was to personally attack Abraham, calling him “snake-like”, saying he had the face of “an overcooked prawn” while speaking in an “irritatingly nasal tone” and having arguments that are “venomously ad-hominem.” He further describes Abraham as belonging to a “Bible college.” [11]

When a group of 50 young activists stormed Monckton's stage during his conference at Copenhagen (with, according to SustainUS, a “paltry audience of five conference attendees” [13]), Monckton exploded on live webcast, calling the students “Hitler Youth” and “Nazis.”
The clean energy activists still managed to get their message through on the Americans for Prosperity sponsored video feed, chanting “Real Americans for Prosperity are Americans for Clean Energy.”
After this incident, Monckton
the SustainUs booth at the UN climate investigations and proceeded to lecture those present on his skeptical views on climate change, claiming that “there hasn't been any global warming for fifteen years and you know it.” [14]
When a representative from SustainUs responded to Monckton, saying that she would appreciate if he “stopped calling us Nazis,” Monckton told her that “you are killing millions by starvation in the third world,” and that “until you start caring, I will call you the Hitler Youth.”

Monckton presented at the Heartland Institute's Third International Conference on Climate Change.[15]
DeSmogBlog found that the sponsors Heartland's 2009 International Conference on Climate Change had collectively received over $47 million from oil companies and right-wing foundations.
March, 2009
In a speech at the Energy & Commerce Hearing on Climate Change Adaptation, Monckton agreed that reducing carbon dioxide emissions would be “taking away plant food from the atmosphere.”
Monckton also cites the Cambrian Period as proof plants love carbon dioxide, although it was a time period where there were no land plants.
October 8, 2008
Monckton wrote an open letter to Senator John McCain that asserts numerous scientific “facts” as interpreted by Monckton.[16]
These include how polar bears are in no danger from global warming, that global warming will have a positive impact on crops, that carbon dioxide doesn't significantly affect the climate, and that global warming is the result of solar activity. Monckton summarizes his responses to John McCain's statements on climate change as follows (Monckton's responses are on the right):
- “The scientists, politicians, and media behind ‘global warming' are honest”: They are not;
- “The debate is over and all credible climate scientists are agreed”: They are not;
- “Temperature today has risen exceptionally fast, above natural variability”: It has not;
- “Changes in solar activity do not much impact today's global warming”: They do;
- “Greenhouse-gas increases are the main reason why it is getting warmer”: They are not;
- “The fingerprint of anthropogenic greenhouse warming is clearly present”: It is absent;
- “Computer models are accurate enough to predict the climate reliably”: They cannot be;
- “Global warming is to blame for present and future climate disasters”: It is not;
- “Mitigating climate change will be cost-effective”: It will not;
- “Taking precautions, just in case, would be the responsible course”: It would not be.
Monckton, however, did not include peer-reviewed climate research to back up the above responses and his points have now been debunked on numerous occasions.
March, 2008
Monckton endorsed of the Manhattan declaration on climate change and was also present at the Heartland Institute's 2008 International Conference on Climate Change.[17]
The Manhattan Declaration asserts that “human-caused climate change is not a global crisis,” that CO2 “is not a pollutant but rather a necessity for all life,” that industrial carbon dioxide emissions do not affect climate change, and that “warmer weather is generally less harmful to life on Earth than colder.” Its recommendation is “that world leaders reject the views expressed by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.”
The Manhattan Declaration was conceived by the International Climate Science Coalition (:{ICSC:(style="margin:0px;padding:0px"):}:). The ICSC, Directed by Tom Harris, is affiliated with several high-profile climate skeptic organizations and websites including the Science and Public Policy Institute (:{SPPI:(style="margin:0px;padding:0px"):}:), Climate Audit and the Friends of Science (FoS).

- Margaret Thatcher—“Chief Policy Advisor”
Christopher Monckton worked for the British government between 1982-1986, and has previously claimed to be a “chief policy advisor” to former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher.
Christopher Monckton has been quoted as saying “I gave her advice on science as well as other policy from 1982-1986, two years before the IPCC Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was founded”, that he was “the only one who knew any science” and that “it was I who – on the prime minister's behalf – kept a weather eye on the official science advisers to the government, from the chief scientific adviser downward.” He has also said that he “advised Margaret Thatcher, FRS, on scientific scams and scares.” [5]
Bob Ward at The Guardian investigated these claims and found them to be false. Interestingly, in Margaret Thatcher's autobiography, she makes no mention of Monckton's role as policy advisor. When she describes the issue of climate change, she refers only to “George Guise, who advised me on science in the policy unit.” [18]
Monckton had also claimed to have brought in “the first computer they had ever seen in Downing Street,” but Ward noted “that this novel and important innovation by Viscount Monckton was not recognized by the current minister for science and universities, David Willetts, who was also a member of the prime minister's policy unit between 1984 and 1986.”
Publications
Monckton's articles on global warming were once published in Nexus magazine, alongside articles featuring conspiracy theories about government UFOs and a 9/11 “terrorist plot.”
According to a search of Google Scholar, Monckton has never published peer-reviewed research in any journal at any time.
Movies
SPPI has released a DVD titled “Apocalypse? No!” based on Monckton's lecture on climate change at the Cambridge Union Society.
Apart from starring in the Great Global Warming Swindle as a bona fide climate change expert, Monckton has also funded its distribution in schools across the country as part of a campaign to counter what he considers the propaganda presented by Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth. [19]
The Great Global Warming Swindle has received critical responses from the scientific community, including a complaint to ABC signed by thirty-seven British Scientists that claimed “the misrepresentations of facts and views, both of which occur in your programme, are so serious that repeat broadcasts of the programme, without amendment, are not in the public interest. In view of the seriousness of climate change as an issue, it is crucial that public debate about it is balanced and well-informed.”
In an interview between ABC Australia’s Tony Jones and the film’s director Martin Durkin the film’s validity and scientific accuracy were also put into question.

Climate Denial Industry Hits Courts And Hollywood As Threats Fly
THE climate science denial industry doesn't like Penn State University's Professor Michael Mann very much.
Mann is the scientist behind the famous “hockey stick” graph that first appeared in the journal Nature [1] in 1998. Mann and two other scientists Professor Raymond Bradley and Professor Malcolm Hughes had reconstructed temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere from the year 1400 to present day using data mainly from tree rings, ice cores and modern temperature readings.
The following year, the same three scientists extended their study to reconstruct 1000 years of temperatures and published this in the journal Geophysical Research Letters [2]. Each time the team plotted their data on graphs and each time the plots showed what is the now famous “hockey stick” shape with a sharp uptick in temperatures towards the end of the century.
What really got the ire of the climate science denial industry and its cheerleaders was that this second study showed that modern day temperatures were likely hotter than they had been in the so-called Medieval Warm Period. This negated a key argument from sceptics - which they continue with today - that it's been warmer in the recent past before the industrial revolution caused the westernised world to fall in love with fossil fuels.
Incidentally, it was never a very convincing argument anyway. Even if it was warmer in the past, it doesn't challenge the multiple lines of evidence which point to burning fossil fuels and deforestation as the main cause of the rapid warming, ocean acidification and sea level rises we see now.
But anyway, enough of the climate science history lesson. Back to Michael Mann.
Soon after his work was published (it also appeared as part of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Third Assessment Report) he started to come under attack. He was accused of being fraudulent and of carrying out dodgy science. When a bunch of his emails were found among files hacked from the UK's Climate Research Research Unit, his words like those of other scientists were cherry-picked and taken out of context in a further attempt to discredit.
In 2011, the US National Science Foundation conducted an inquiry into the many allegations against Mann and found no wrongdoing [3] and praised him as one of the most respected scientists in his field. Several inquiries into the leaked “climategate” emails also cleared the scientists, including Mann, of wrongdoing. Despite the exonerations, the attacks continued.
For many years, Mann - who recounts his experiences in a book “Hockey Stick and the Climate Wars [4]” - chose to defend himself in the court of public opinion but has now started to fight in the courts of law too.
In March 2011, Mann launched a defamation action [5] against climate sceptic Dr Tim Ball, who had answered a question about whether scientists had committed “fraud” by saying that Mann should be in a jail. The writ includes the Frontier Centre for Public Policy, which published the comments on its website. Mann is also suing over a separate story which claimed he had committed scientific fraud and compared him to a child molester (read the full complaint here [6]). Mann has also been pursued himself through the courts.
In a case dragged out over two years [7], Virginia's Attorney General Ken Cuccineli tried to force the release of Mann's emails from his time at the University of Virginia. Cuccineli is regarded by some as one of the United State's highest profile climate science deniers [8]. The case was thrown out.
The American Tradition Institute [9] has also pursued Mann's University of Virginia inbox and files [10] through court action. An investigation into the roots of the ATI [11] found it was “largely bankrolled” by individuals or businesses with an interest in fossil fuels.
This whole affair brings us to Australia and Lord Christopher Monckton, the British hereditary peer and climate science denier currently on a country-wide tour. Monckton also features as one of the “bastards [12]” in Greedy Lying Bastards [13] - a new documentary about the climate science denial industry which has just premiered in Hollywood. Michael Mann is one of the documentary's “heroes [14]”, alongside DeSmogBlog founder Jim Hoggan.
http://www.desmogblog.com/2013/03/08/greedy-lying-bastards-new-film-pulls-no-punches
Lord Monckton claimed on March 1 that Mann “gave up the case [15]” against Ball, neglecting to check with Mann or his lawyer first. Mann's lawyer in the case is Roger McConchie, who it turns out was busy on March 1. Doing what, I wonder? He told me via email
I conducted an examination for discovery (deposition) of Tim Ball under oath before a Court Reporter in Victoria on Friday, March 1, 2013. I will continue that deposition of Ball in late May, 2013. Michael Mann is scheduled to be examined for discovery in Vancouver by Ball’s lawyer on May 22, 2013. I anticipate conducting discoveries of Ball’s co-defendant Frontier Centre for Public Policy in the near future. Christopher Monckton’s statement about the litigation has no basis in reality.
Joanne Codling (JoNova) has since corrected her story. Lord Monckton has also been making threatsof his own [16]. He has written to the University of Tasmania (UTAS) and accused scientist Dr Tony Press of “serious professional and academic misconduct and scientific fraud”.
Monckton claims there is now a “rigorous” investigation taking place. What is in fact happening, is that UTAS has received a complaint and is obliged to consider it, no matter how ungrounded it might be. A UTAS spokesperson (possibly playing with the straighest bat you'll ever see) told me: “The University is assessing the matters under Part B of the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research.”
You would have to be concerned if UTAS was taking seriously threats made by a man who calls for climate scientists to be “locked up”, claims President Barack Obama's birth certificate was most likely forged and launches an extremist political party fronted by an anti-Islamist creationist pastor [17]. Not to mention his many misrepresentations of climate science. [18] And it's worth reminding ourselves just what it is that UTAS is apparently “assessing” - namely, comments Dr Tony Press made to a newspaper reporter [19] which outlined why Monckton's argument that global warming has stopped was misleading.
If Lord Monckton really has taken umbrage with Dr Press, why not publish his concerns in a scientific journal and subject his ideas to established peer review - something which he has never been able to do? Instead, Lord Monckton abuses scientists and calls for them to be sacked with the potential to intimidate academics, intimidate a Vice Chancellor and tie up university resources with an unfounded complaint.

Lord Monckton Threatens Climate Scientists, Again
MEMBERS of London's famous gentlemen's club Brooks's have no doubt cooked-up a few bizarre plots, plans and wagers over the years as Britain's gentry and ennobled upper class sipped on glasses of port in their smoking jackets.
In 1785, for example, there was an agreement between two Lords [1] to hand over 500guineas [2] if one of them managed to have sexual intercourse with a woman in a balloon "one thousand yards from the Earth" . There's no record to suggest that the arrangement, recorded in the club's Betting Book, was ever paid.
The exclusive men-only enclave lives on and still attracts high-profile figures, although Rupert Murdoch's son James' application ran into trouble [3] over the News of the World phone hacking scandal. Club member and climate science denier Lord Christopher Monckton put Brooks's famous address to good use this week for a letter sent to the University of Tasmania.
Lord Monckton is currently on a tour of Australia. One of his appearances was in a rented room at the University of Tasmania (UTAS) where he told the audience that global warming has stopped - which it hasn't [4].
When The Mercury newspaper in Hobart asked:{ Dr Tony Press:(style="background-color:#ffff66;"):}: [5], the CEO of the UTAS-based Antarctic Climate and Ecosystems Cooperative Research Centre, about this claim, he had the temerity to point out that Lord Monckton was being misleading (careful, he's a member of Brooks's you know.. and a Viscount).
Lord Monckton was piqued and wrote the letter [6] to UTAS Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter Rathjen - return address the Brooks's club - accusing Dr Press of "serious professional and academic misconduct and scientific fraud", calling for an investigation and for him to be "dismissed, forthwith".
The letter [6] was hosted by climate skeptic blogger Joanne Codling [7] (aka JoNova) and promoted by News Ltd columnist and blogger Andrew Bolt [8]. Lord Monckton claims he has a "senior Australian police officer" on the case.
In a post-midnight radio interview with Sydney radio host Brian Wilshire, Lord Monckton complained people had been writing to universities to try and stop him from speaking (which they are within their rights to do, by the way). But the head of the Scotland branch of the right-wing political party UKIP apparently didn't see or didn't care about his own hypocrisy in demanding another academics be fired and investigated. He told 2GB's Wilshire [9]:
The VC has acknowledged it (the letter). He has got a month to get back to me substantively after which the police will be called in and, in fact I have already got a senior officer of the Australian police who is interested in this and he has said yes, this is fraud, and yes - you tell tell us the word and we will investigate. I will give the university the chance to investigate so, Mr Vice-Chancellor, if you are listening then know this. You have that month and the clock is ticking and after that the police will be coming and feeling your collar too because the arrangement I have is that if he doesn't have this properly investigated then the university will also be investigated by the police for fraud as accessories after the fact.
Wilshire's response? "Wow - fantastic stuff".
A likely unfased Dr Press told me: "I find this ironic as I was prompt and public in advocating Viscount Monckton's right to to speak on campus when some in the university were campaigning to have him banned." I say unfased, because Lord Monckton tends to hand out threats such as this in the same way that glasses of sherry and nibbles might get passed around at Brooks's. The threats very rarely come to anything.
Lord Monckton has threatened to sue The Guardian columnist George Monbiot [10], Professor Scott Mandia, Associate Professor John Abraham [11] and Australia's public broadcaster the ABC [12], to name a few. Professor Barry Bickmore [13] lists several others on his blog. Lord Monckton has also accused the chair of the IPCC, Rajendra Pachauri, of "fraud" [14] and threatened to report him to authorities. Hot Topic's Gareth Renowden [15] also notes that threatening academics is a pattern of behaviour for the Viscount.
He consistently calls for them to be "locked up". Lord Monckton's interview with Wilshire, along with a second on 2GB with top-rating host Alan Jones [16], was riddled with accusations that climate scientists are fraudulent, that global warming is a hoax, that climate science is a way for communists to instal a world government and that academics who "believe" CO2 emissions are causing dangerous climate change are only in it for the money. None of these claims were challenged by the hosts, who merely acted as cheerleaders.
Neither asked him if Lord Monckton still thinks Barack Obama's Hawaiian birth certificate was forged [17]. They didn't ask him about his public endorsement of a political party fronted by a Melbourne pastor who is anti-Islam, anti-abortion, anti-Darwin [18] and who claims to have brought people back from the dead. Nor did they ask him about his many misrepresentations of the science, documented at Skeptical Science [19].
In one late-night interview segment, Lord Monckton revealed it had been astrophysicist Dr Wille Soon, whose recent career has been almost entirely funded by the fossil fuel industry [20], who had first alerted him to a leaked draft of what later became the United Nation's Copenhagen Accord. Rather than a weak non-binding agreement to make modest cuts in greenhouse gas emissions, Lord Monckton categorised the document as an attempt by the UN to instal world government. He told Wilshire:
I first got warned of this when Dr Willie Soon of the Harvard Smithsonian Institute of Physics first got hold of me in a panic in 2009. Willie Soon lives in a permanent state of panic becuase he reads all the stuff the other side writes. Poor fellow he will committ suicide one day because he reads all this horrifying fascist stuff that they churn out. He says you have got to read this one and it was the draft treaty of Copenhagen. It was 186 pages long. When Willie says you have got to read this, then you have got to read it becuase Willie knows what you have to read and what you don't. I read the whole thing. I was in Canada at the time and I was giving a talk to the 25 richest men on the planet - it was at the Petroleum Club of:{ Calgary:(style="background-color:#ffff66;"):}: [21] and I was giving a short presentation where I said climate change was a load of rubbish. And I said by the way, they are using this as a Trojan horse to try to put in a world government.
Do we have to point out it's very unlikely that Lord Monckton had the world's 25 richest men in the room all at once? Maybe we should check with Bill Gates, Carlos Slim and Warren Buffet, just to be sure?
Anyway, back to Lord Monckton's demands of the Vice-Chancellor at the University of Tasmania. I asked the university for a response, but have not heard back.
But here's my wager, which if I was a member of the Brooks's club I'd be happy to stick into their Betting Book. The climate fraud police will not be coming within a frisky balloon's flight of the offices of UTAS any time soon.

2010 congr testimony
Monckton doesn't seem to be aware of whatRoger Revelle found. The oceans aren't well mixed -- it's just the surface water that will be acidified.
Monckton continued to dissemble about his claims to being a member of the House of Lords.
I have never sat or voted in the House of Lords. Nor have I pretended otherwise.
Compare with his earlier statements:
Finally, you may wonder why it is thata member of the Upper House of the United Kingdom legislature, wholly unconnected with and unpaid by the corporation that is the victim of your lamentable letter, should take the unusual step of calling upon you as members of the Upper House of the United States legislature either to withdraw what you have written or resign your sinecures.
I'm a member of the House of Lords, though, being merely hereditary, I don't have a seat there

House Of Lords membership claim
Despite the passing of the 1999 House Of Lords Act (which stripped hereditary peers of instant admission to the House Of Lords) Christopher Monckton has claimed that he is "a member of the Upper House of the United Kingdom legislature"[12]^(http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Christopher_Monckton#cite_note-11). More recently he has claimed that he is a member "without the right to sit or vote"[13]^(http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Christopher_Monckton#cite_note-12). The House Of Lords themselves state that "Christopher Monckton is not and has never been a Member of the House of Lords. There is no such thing as a 'non-voting' or 'honorary' member."[14]^(http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Christopher_Monckton#cite_note-13)
His Nobel prize pin, made of gold recovered from a physics experiment, was presented to him by the Emeritus Professor of Physics at the University of Rochester, New York, USA -SPPInstitute website[15]^(http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Christopher_Monckton#cite_note-14)
When Christopher Monckton visited Australia in early 2010 he conceeded that it was "it was a joke, a joke" and "never meant to be taken seriously". The Sydney Morning Herald noted that despite this, he had made the same claim with a "straight face" on the Alan Jones show one day prior, and the claim remained on the SPPInstitute website[16]^(http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Christopher_Monckton#cite_note-15) where it can still be found six months later.
Policy work
Christopher Monckton worked for the British government between 1982-1986, has previously claimed to be a "chief policy advisor" to former British prime minister Margeret Thatcher, and is frequently introduced as her "chief science advisor" when interviewed by the conservative media[17]^(http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Christopher_Monckton#cite_note-16).
Christopher Monckton has been quoted as saying "I gave her advice on science as well as other policy from 1982-1986, two years before the IPCC Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was founded", that he was "the only one who knew any science" and that "it was I who â on the prime minister's behalf â kept a weather eye on the official science advisers to the government, from the chief scientific adviser downward".
In 1986, "Two Brains" wrote a prize-winning essay on the role of the unit, but mysteriously omitted to mention Monckton's historic contribution."[18]^(http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Christopher_Monckton#cite_note-17)
'Hitler Youth' gaffe
And don't go around invading people's meetings again."[19]
John Abraham presentation
On May the 31st 2010, John P. Abraham, an associate professor at the University of St. Thomas uploaded an in-depth rebuttal of Monckton's lecture entitled "A Scientist Replies To Christopher Monckton"[20]^(http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Christopher_Monckton#cite_note-19) in the form of an online presentation.
Monckton's first response[21]^(http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Christopher_Monckton#cite_note-20) was to personally attack John Abraham, accusing him of being "snake-like", of having the face of "an overcooked prawn" and an "irritatingly nasal tone" while at the same time accusing him of being "venomously ad-hominem" and belonging to a "Bible college" (despite the fact Monckton and the University are both Catholic).
Thomas, outlining that he perceived the presentation as "academically dishonest"[22]^(http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Christopher_Monckton#cite_note-21). The University replied that Monckton was entitled to disagree with Abraham, but that they were standing by him.
On the 20th of June John Abraham uploaded a revised version of his presentation. As revisions are common in academia it is unknown to what extent this had to do with Monckton's criticisms.
On the 24th of June Monckton appeared on the Alex Jones show and charged that the head of the University, Father Dennis Dease, was a "creep", that John Abraham was a "wretched little man" and that the University itself was a "half-assed Bible college"[23]^(http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Christopher_Monckton#cite_note-22). In response, the University sent a legal stating they were "appalled by [the] disparaging, outrageous and defamatory comments regarding the University of St. Thomas, Father Dennis Dease and Professor John Abraham, especially the comments made during a TV interview on the 24th of June." [24]^(http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Christopher_Monckton#cite_note-23). Monckton responded by denying any remembrance of the comments or interview[25]^(http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Christopher_Monckton#cite_note-24), even though he had only made the interview two days prior. Eventually he admitted recording an interview for Alex Jones, and demanded to know which comments they perceived as defamatory. Presumably, he meant "wretched little man" in its most complimentary sense.
On the 10th of July the University had refused to fold to Monckton's demands, and true to his word he published an86 page attack on John Abraham (and to a lesser extent, his presentation) on the popular global warming denial website Watts Up With That[26]^(http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Christopher_Monckton#cite_note-25) The response was criticised for being a "gish-gallop"[27]^(http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Christopher_Monckton#cite_note-26) and "too silly and too incredibly long to be picked apart piece by piece"[28]^(http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Christopher_Monckton#cite_note-27).
Monckton also encouraged Watts' readers to flood Father Dennis Dease's email inbox with demands for the presentation to be removed and for Abraham to be dismissed (apparently for daring to criticism him). For this action, Monckton has been widely criticised for trying to bully the University with yet-to-be-enacted legal threats and unsolicited emails[29]^(http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Christopher_Monckton#cite_note-28).

This is not the earlier, pro-public-health Science and Public Policy Institute founded by George Carlo; see Science and Public Policy Institute (disambiguation) for the distinction.
The Science and Public Policy Institute (SPPI) is a global warming skeptics group which appears to primarily be the work of Robert Ferguson, its President; its website draws heavily on papers written by Christopher :{Monckton:(style="background-color:#ffff66;"):}:.
SPPI describes itself as "a nonprofit institute of research and education dedicated to sound public policy based on sound science." It also proclaims that it is "free from affiliation to any corporation or political party, we support the advancement of sensible public policies for energy and the environment rooted in rational science and economics. Only through science and factual information, separating reality from rhetoric, can legislators develop beneficial policies without unintended consequences that might threaten the life, liberty, and prosperity of the citizenry."[1]^(http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Science_and_Public_Policy_Institute#cite_note-Our_Mission-0)
Contents[hide] |
Background
Ferguson
Prior to founding SPPI in approximately mid-2007, Ferguson was the Executive Director of the Center for Science and Public Policy (CSPP), a project of the corporate-funded group, the Frontiers of Freedom Institute.
Between March 4, 2005 and May 10, 2006 Ferguson edited a weekly bulletin titled Climate Weekly, then Climate and Environment Weekly and finally Climate and Environment Review, which was published by the Center for Science and Public Policy.[2]^(http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Science_and_Public_Policy_Institute#cite_note-1)[3]^(http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Science_and_Public_Policy_Institute#cite_note-2)
Origin of SPPI
The initial media release of the Institute appears to have been issued on June 1, 2007. The release -- supporting the statements made by the then NASA Administrator Michael Griffin questioning global warming -- also listed Harriette Johnson from the Chicago-based think thank, the Heartland Institute as a media contact.[4]
From mid-July 2007 SPPI began publishing SPPI eWire, which is identical in content style to CSPP's Climate Weekly, Climate and Environment Weekly and Climate and Environment Review.[5]^(http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Science_and_Public_Policy_Institute#cite_note-4) (SPPI is in the same building as CSPP, though in different offices - SPPI at Suite 299).[6]^(http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Science_and_Public_Policy_Institute#cite_note-5) and CPPR at Suite 2100.[7]^(http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Science_and_Public_Policy_Institute#cite_note-6)
SPPI name
Ferguson founded and named this group approximately eight years after George L. Carlo had founded the identically-named, pro-public-health Science and Public Policy Institute, to work on issues such as electro-magnetic radiation and health issues.
Ferguson states he was oblivious to the existence of Carlo's group, and that it was only after registering his organization in Virginia that he discovered Carlo's group existed, but by then his group had created the website and printed their stationery.[8]^(http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Science_and_Public_Policy_Institute#cite_note-7)
Funding
On its website SPPI does not detail the sources of its funding or outline its approach to disclosure.
Personnel
While the SPPI seems primarily to be the work of Ferguson, it also features on it website the work of other prominent climate change skeptics who are involved with one or more other anti-Kyoto treaty groups.
The SPPI website lists its "personnel" as being[9]^(http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Science_and_Public_Policy_Institute#cite_note-8):
- Willie Soon, Chief Science Adviser
- Lord Christopher **Monckton** (UK)
- William Kininmonth, (Australia)

Via Dave Weigel, Monckton spoke at a Tea Partyâ rally, astroturfed by Americans For Prosperity (a front group of)::(style="background-color:#ffff66;"/maxresdefault.jpg)):
âAmerica!â said Monckton at the start of his speech. âLand of opportunity! You can be born in Kenya and end up as president of the United States!â
Though Monckton later claimed this was a âjokeâ, he does indeed have doubts about the Presidentâs citizenship:
âI have no idea where he was born,â said Monckton, who was working the crowd and signing autographs. âWhat I do find strange is that the public records of his Hawaiian birth have been sealed, and can not be obtained by the public. His lawyers have spent a lot of money trying to seal the records of his public life. All of those records should be open to the public, as they always were for previous presidents.â
And:
âThe effective classification of all of these documents of his early life is surely contrary to the spirit of freedom and openness in the Democratic west, said Monckton. âItâs bound to raise questions in some peoplesâ minds.â
Monckton previously referred to the President as Osamabamarama, linking Obama to the terrorist Osama Bin Laden and prophesied that Obama and others seeking to mitigate climate change would âkill tens of millionsâ in a keynote speech hosted by the right wing, anti-regulation, climate denialism front group Heartland Institute.
Itâs not a coincidence that climate denialists believe (or claim to believe) a lot of other insane things like denial of CFCs causing ozone depletion, denial of cigarettes causing cancer, denial of evolution, believe that environmentalists had :{DDT banned which killed hundreds of millions of people in Africa:(style="background-color:#ffff66;"):}:, etc. While some of this is just part of being an âexpertâ for hire for anti-regulatory interests, much of it is more simply explained by the phenomenon of crank magnetism. Cranks believe kooky things, and these kooky beliefs are rarely isolated to a single subject. So people like Monckton are not only climate denialists, but they turn out to be birthers and also believe that they can cure HIV.

May 6 hearing at which the House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming heard from a panel of scientists and one policy adviser on the scientific foundations of climate change, in light of continued attacks on the integrity of climate science and scientists. The witnesses were IPCC authors James McCarthy, Chris Field, and James Hurrell, ‘Oxburgh inquiry’ panel member Lisa Graumlich, and ‘Lord’ Christopher Monckton, 3rd Viscount Monckton of Brenchley.
Post by Alexa Jay
Links to written testimony and an archived webcast video of the hearing are posted on the Committee’s website here.
Chairman Edward Markey (D-Mass.) explained the impetus for the hearing, saying that instead of trying to understand the scientific evidence, those who deny the existence of human-caused global warming have misused stolen e-mails and have cherry-picked data to manufacture a cooling trend, seeking to create the appearance of a ongoing fundamental scientific debate. The scientist witnesses were called to address the claims of the denialists, including one witness who was a member of the “Oxburgh Inquiry” panel convened by the University of East Anglia to examine the scientific integrity of the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) work in question in the ‘climategate’ controversy.

Amid the aftermath of the failed Times Square terrorist attack and the lethal floods in Tennessee — not to mention the president finally noticing there is a deep water drilling disaster in the Gulf of Mexico — the House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming held a hearing for Democrats to attempt to gloss over fatal flaws exposed in global warming “consensus science” by the Climategate scandal.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) last December formally issued a so-called “Endangerment Finding” declaring carbon dioxide, the very substance human beings exhale, is a danger to our health and the future of life on the planet as we know it.....

"the rate of increase in sea level has not changed since satellites first began measuring it reliably in 1993" 9 January 2011 (Source) | The claim sea level isn’t rising is based on blatantly doctored graphs contradicted by observations. |

"The global sea-ice record shows virtually no change throughout the past 30 years, because the quite rapid loss of Arctic sea ice since the satellites were watching has been matched by a near-equally rapid gain of Antarctic sea ice." 9 January 2011 (Source) | Arctic sea ice loss is three times greater than Antarctic sea ice gain. |
"The IPCC’s current thinking is that up to 2° of warming compared with the present would be harmless and even beneficial." 9 January 2011 (Source) | Negative impacts of global warming on agriculture, health & environment far outweigh any positives. |
"In particular, the models predict that if and only if Man is the cause of warming, the tropical upper air, six miles above the ground, should warm up to thrice as fast as the surface, but this tropical upper-troposphere “hot-spot” has not been observed in 50 years of measurement by balloon-mounted radiosondes, sondes dropped from high-flying aircraft, or satellites." 9 January 2011 (Source) | We see a clear "short-term hot spot" - there's various evidence for a "long-term hot spot". |
"There was a remarkable spike in global temperatures in 1998, caused not by manmade “global warming” but by a Great El Niño event – an alteration in the pattern of ocean currents that begins in the equatorial eastern Pacific and spreads around the globe, lasting a few months. Report: Democrats Refuse to Allow Skeptic to Testify Alongside Gore At Congressional Hearing
By: Marc Morano - Climate Depot

Climate Depot Exclusive
Washington DC: UK’s Lord Christopher Monckton, a former science advisor to Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, claimed House Democrats have refused to allow him to appear alongside former Vice President Al Gore at high profile global warming hearing on Friday at 10am. Monckton told ClimateDepot.com that the Democrats rescinded his scheduled joint appearance at the House Energy and Commerce hearing on Friday. Monckton said he was informed that he would not be allowed to testify alongside Gore when his plane landed from England Thursday afternoon.
“The House Democrats’ don’t want Gore humiliated, so they slammed the door of the Capitol in my face,” Monckton told Climate Depot in an exclusive interview. “They are cowards.”
According to Monckton, :{Rep. Joe:(style="font-weight:inherit;margin:0px;padding:0px;border:0px;border-image-source:initial;border-image-slice:initial;border-image-width:initial;border-image-outset:initial;border-image-repeat:initial;outline:0px;font-style:inherit;vertical-align:baseline;background-color:#ffff66;"):}::{**Barton**:(style="margin:0px;padding:0px;border:0px;border-image-source:initial;border-image-slice:initial;border-image-width:initial;border-image-outset:initial;border-image-repeat:initial;outline:0px;font-style:inherit;vertical-align:baseline;background-color:#ffff66;"):}::{ (R-Texas), Ranking Member:(style="font-weight:inherit;margin:0px;padding:0px;border:0px;border-image-source:initial;border-image-slice:initial;border-image-width:initial;border-image-outset:initial;border-image-repeat:initial;outline:0px;font-style:inherit;vertical-align:baseline;background-color:#ffff66;"):}: on the Energy & Commerce Committee, had invited Lord Monckton to go head to head with Gore and testify at the hearing on Capitol Hill Friday. But Monckton now says that when his airplane from London landed in the U.S. he was informed that the former Vice-President had “chickened out” and there would be no joint appearance. Gore is scheduled to testify on Friday to the :{Subcommittee on Energy and the Environment’s:(style="margin:0px;padding:0px;border:0px;outline:0px;font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;vertical-align:baseline;background-color:#ffff66;"):}: fourth and final day of hearings on the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009. The hearing will be held in 2123 Rayburn House Office Building.
According to Monckton, House Democrats told the Republican committee staff earlier this week that they would be putting forward an unnamed ‘celebrity’ as their star witness Friday at a multi-panel climate hearing examining the House global warming bill. The ‘celebrity’ witness turned out to be Gore. Monckton said the GOP replied they would respond to the Democrats ‘celebrity’ with an unnamed ‘celebrity’ of their own. But Monckton claims that when the Democrats were told who the GOP witness would be, they refused to allow him to testify alongside Gore.
“The Democrats have a lot to learn about the right of free speech under the US Constitution. Congress Henry Waxman’s (D-CA) refusal to expose Al Gore’s sci-fi comedy-horror testimony to proper, independent scrutiny by the House minority reeks of naked fear,” Monckton said from the airport Thursday evening.
“Waxman knows there has been no ‘global warming’ for at least a decade. Waxman knows there has been seven and a half years’ global cooling. Waxman knows that, in the words of the UK High Court judge who condemned Gore’s mawkish movie as materially, seriously, serially inaccurate, ‘the Armageddon scenario that he depicts is not based on any scientific view,’” Monckton explained.
A call to the Democratic office of the House Energy and Commerce Committee seeking comment was not immediately returned Thursday night.

--}:GORE: I think that those people are in such a tiny, tiny minority now with their point of view. They are almost like the ones who still believe that the moon landing was staged in a movie lot in Arizona.
GLENN: Wow.
GORE: And those who believe the Earth is flat.
GLENN: Right.
GORE: That demeans them a little bit, but it's not that far off.
GLENN: Yeah. That man is responsible for global warming. That's a tiny, tiny, tiny fraction of the population. 21% of the people now say that man is the most important factor causing global warming. 63%, tiny, tiny, tiny sliver of the population. 63% say man's one factor in global warming. 16% say they don't know or man has no affect. By the way, the number of those who say we didn't land on the moon is 6%. So it's almost the same thing. So there you go.
Lord Christopher Monckton has produced his own slide show documentary on the other side. It's called "Apocalypse? No!" Available at greatswindle.com right now. He is on the phone with us. This is the guy who stopped the -- spearheaded the campaign to get Al Gore's movie thrown out of the schools in England. One of the flat Earthers, if I may say.:{ Do you believe the moon landing was fake, Lord Monckton?
LORD MONCKTON: Oh, Glenn, it was actually filmed in the Scottish Highlands. We made a fortune out of it. }:
GLENN: Really, that's weird.
LORD MONCKTON: Al Gore lives in a fantasy world of his own and, of course, it's he who's the flat Earther and not us because before Tolomai (ph) and Copernicus came along, the scientific consensus was near unanimous that the Earth was indeed flat apart from here in the Highlands and it was only when the scientists had another look they found the consensus of being wrong all the time. It is going to be exactly the same with global warming. There is supposed to be a consensus, actually more and more scientists --
GLENN: Here, Lord Monckton, I have to tell you. What people will say today is we have been fed a constant stream in the last three days of the and the Arctic ice shelf that has melted, proof positive global warming.
LORD MONCKTON: OH, yeah. Well, it's melting but there was an earthquake first and the most likely thing that caused this ice to crack, of course, is an earthquake and there is indeed local warming in that region of Antarctica caused by undersea volcanic activity largely. But most of :{Antarctica is cooling, though the newspapers somehow won't be telling you that.
GLENN: Is it true that the ice that broke off was .01% of the total ice in Antarctica and it --
LORD MONCKTON: I think you may be exaggerating slightly. And, of course, it didn't break off, either}:. It was in danger of breaking off and then along comes the and the architecture particular winter and all freezes it up again. So it didn't go anywhere.
GLENN: Okay. All right. What was the answer to the question that Al Gore gave last night on his $300 million ad campaign? I have the question and his answer. I want to know what was the real answer. Here's the question and answer from TV last night.
STAHL: We're told that this ad campaign is going to cost a barrel of money. How are you paying for this?
GORE: Well, Tipper and I, thank you again, have put all of the profits from the movie and the book that we would have otherwise gotten, An Inconvenient Truth, to this and --
STAHL: All the profits?
GORE: Correct, all that we would have received, absolutely.
TIPPER GORE: And not only that but, you know, there is a cash component to the Nobel Peace Prize which he was awarded, and we donated that and we matched it.
GLENN: Okay. That's about $300 million that they are going to spend on the ad campaign. If we're incredibly generous, we can say that the Gores just donated $10 million, incredibly generous. Where does the other $290 million come from for this ad campaign?
LORD MONCKTON: That, of course, is the question that she ought to have asked him and she didn't because if she had asked him, he wouldn't have agreed to the interview. On my guess is that it came from a number of sources, all of them undesirable and all of them very unfriendly to the freedoms of the West. I think the Chinese government are involved in this up to their neck. I think the Indian government. I think several Arab governments.
GLENN: Wait, wait, wait, wait. Wait, wait, wait.
LORD MONCKTON: And I also, it's quite likely that outfits like Greenpeace and the Environmental Defense Fund. Greenpeace will soon have a Navy larger than the British Navy.
GLENN: Okay. Hang on just a second. Lord Monckton, you say something like the Chinese and India are funneling money into this campaign.
LORD MONCKTON: Yeah.
GLENN: Do you have anything to back that up? That's quite the charge.
LORD MONCKTON: It is quite a charge, but it's just a very large amount of money which Gore hasn't got and nor, I think, even do Greenpeace and the Environmental Defense Fund have that kind of money. It's such a large sum that --
GLENN: So what makes you jump to India or China as opposed to --
LORD MONCKTON: India, China, Arab governments, who stands to gain? It's very simple really. Who stands to gain if Western governments close down their economies because infatuous nincompoops like Al Gore come out and say the sky's about to fall in?

am thinker:
s cone of silence began to crack this spring -- first on March 22, when Lord Christopher Monckton (a Britisher very knowledgeable about climate change and a former policy adviser for Margaret Thatcher's government) said on the Dennis Miller radio show, "And the birth certificate -- I do know that birth certificate isn't genuine -- It appears in layers on the screen in such a way you can remove quite separately each of the individual dates. You use Adobe Illustrator and each of the individual dates is in its own separate layer. This thing has been fabricated -- But the point is, is what he [Obama] has done on the White House website is he has put up a document which is plainly a forgery and I would regard that as a very serious matter." Lord Monckton has the advantage of being beyond the reach of an IRS audit, so he could say what he really thought.
Next, on March 23, was syndicated columnist Diana West's must-read "Silence of the Lapdogs," which took to task the mainstream media for ignoring Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio's "cold case posse" report on the forgery. Most of her syndicated outlets declined to publish this column; it appeared in a few smaller newspapers across the country.
Her comments, as well as Lord Moncton's, were echoed by Thomas Lifson, editor of American Thinker, on March 23, when he concluded: "One does not have to believe that Obama was born in Kenya to be disturbed by the evidence of a digitally-constructed birth certificate being passed off as authentic by a president. Those who are more worried about their public image and about being attacked by the media and political establishment than about getting at the truth will in the end be judged by their actions. Facts are facts, and Sheriff Joe's cold case posse has come up with facts that will not be silenced or controverted by social pressure. History will render its verdict on Obama, his critics, and his defenders."
