(PARIS) Funding for climate change denial is drying up. The Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow (CFACT), a US climate change denial group that espouses the "free-market," has lost more than two thirds of its funding in the past two years, according to tax filings reviewed by the Center for Media and Democracy (CMD).
In the most recently available CFACT tax filing for the 2014 financial year—filed in late 2015—the group reported receiving grant revenue of $1.5m, down from roughly $2m it had received a year earlier, but representing a massive drop off from the $5.5m in revenue it reported for 2012.
CFACT Grant Funding
- 2009: $3.07m
- 2010: $2.85m
- 2011: $2.98m
- 2012: $5.5m
- 2013: $1.97m
- 2014: $1.5m
CFACT co-organized a failed climate-denial conference along with the coal-funded Heartland Institute this week in Paris, coinciding with the UN COP21 climate summit negotiations taking place on the other side of the city. As CMD reported previously, only about 30 people turned up to the event, leaving large numbers of empty seats in the modestly sized room.
Both Heartland Institute and CFACT have received funding from fossil fuel interests for many years, including significant funds from ExxonMobil. That funding has now apparently ceased.
ExxonMobil now faces the prospect of civil lawsuits and possible criminal penalties, for allegedly suppressing its internal awareness about the serious risk to the environment as well as to shareholder value, from climate change caused by the burning of fossil fuels. The New York Attorney General, Eric Schneiderman, has begun an ExxonMobil investigation, issuing the corporation with subpoenas which are still pending.
According to recent parallel investigations published by InsideClimate Newsand by Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism/LA Times, ExxonMobil executives were informed by their own scientistsof the serious threat of climate change as far back as the nineteen seventies, with ExxonMobil using this data to inform its own long term planning. Despite this apparent knowledge, ExxonMobil provided significant funding to groups such as Heartland and CFACT which denied the science.
CMD recently provided the New York Attorney General with detailed information about ExxonMobil's funding of another climate change denial group, the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). Both CFACT and Heartland participate in ALEC, and have provided state legislators with climate denial briefings at recent ALEC conferences.
ALEC is another climate denial group facing dwindling support. As CMD recently reported, the giant utility American Electric Powerthis week became the 107th corporation to abandon ALEC since CMD launched the ALEC Exposed project in 2011, joining BP, Shell, Google and others in ceasing financial support.

One such person is Alex Mugisha, who for the past couple of years has worked with two of his friends to start a small business on the outskirts of Kampala. With help from CFACT, Alex plans to fire some 10,000 bricks and use the proceeds to expand his operations and hire more people.
Joseph’s internet cafe was already well-established when he submitted his grant application requesting capital to invest in additional computers due to heavy demand from customers. CFACT approved his grant in late summer 2013, allowing Joseph to nearly double the number of computers available for his customers.
The next stage of grant fund disbursement will provide solar panels, which will allow his business to continue uninterrupted during blackouts caused by Uganda’s unreliable electric grid.
CANCUN?
- Delivering 2 tons of food to underfed residents.
- Construction, cleanup, and painting carried out by CFACT Collegians students.
- Providing laptops to the Valle Verde school, so that the children receive basic computer education. TWO?
- Installing solar panels on the roof of the school.
- And more.

Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow (CFACT) is a conservative Washington, D.C.-based non-profit organization, founded in 1985. Its stated mission is "to promote a positive voice on environment and development issues". CFACT co-founders**David Rothbard**and Craig Ruckerbelieved that "the power of the free market, combined with the applications of safe technologies, can offer humanity practical solutions to many of the world’s pressing concerns."[1]
Craig Rucker stated that mankind faces a threat "not from man-made global warming, but from man-made hysteria."[2] In 1993, CFACT began a daily radio program, "Just the Facts," which in 2012 reached 5,000 daily broadcasts.[3]
In 1994, CFACT began attending United Nations conferences and World Trade Organization meetings that addressed environment and development issues. It was given recognition as an official non-governmental organization for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.[4]
CFACT produces online articles and radio segments on environmental and consumer subjects. In 2004, CFACT Europe[5] was founded and provides public policy research, analysis, publications and conferences. CFACT also coordinates the work of affiliate chapters, called Collegians for a Constructive Tomorrow,on U.S. college campuses.

Personnel
CFACT is governed by a Board of Directors that includes founding President David Rothbard and founding Executive Director Craig Rucker. Prominent staffers include Communications Director Marc Morano, whose primary job is maintenance of the Climate Depot news service; Senior Policy Analyst PaulDriessen, whose book, Eco-Imperialism: Green Power, Black Death, discusses ways environmentalist organizations perpetuate poverty and disease in developing countries; and environmental journalist Duggan Flanakin.[6]
CFACT has a 50-member board of advisors. Among the advisors are South African nuclear engineer Kelvin Kemm;Craig Idso and SherwoodIdso of the Center for the Study of Carbon Dioxide and Global Change; Alex Avery and Dennis T. Avery of the Hudson Institute; Patrick J. Michaels, a Senior Fellow at the Cato Institute; Roger Bate, director of Africa Fighting Malaria; professor William M. Gray of Colorado State University; Peter Holle, founding president of Canada's Frontier Institute for Public Policy Research; Willie Soon of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics; Vincent Gray, founder of the New ZealandClimate Science Coalition; and Howard Hayden, publisher of "The Energy Advocate."[7]
Funding
Total revenues over the past three years have averaged around $3 million, as reported on the organization's IRS Form 990[8] and its most recent annual audited financial statement.[9] In 2010, nearly half of CFACT's funding came from**Donors Trust**, a nonprofit donor-advised fund.[10] In 2011, CFACT received a $1.2 million grant from Donors Trust, 40% of CFACT's revenue that year.[11]
CFACT does not disclose its funding sources.[citation needed] According to CFACT, it is mainly funded by private citizens and has never sought or received money from federal, state, or local governments. As of 2013, it had a three-star (out of four) rating from Charity Navigator[12] and a four-star (out of five) rating from GuideStar.[13]
Environmental issues
CFACT is a member organization of the Cooler Heads Coalition, which aims at "dispelling the myths of global warming through science and analysis."[14] CFACT chapters have protested in defense of oil exploration[15] and in opposition to the Kyoto Protocol.[16] CFACT supports drilling for oil in theArcticNational Wildlife Refuge.[17] In 2009, Mother Jonesmagazine identified CFACT as one of the twelve most vocal organizations involved in climate disinformation.[18]
Copenhagen Climate Challenge 2009
During the COP15 conference in Copenhagen, CFACT hosted an outside side event in Copenhagen called the Copenhagen Climate Challenge.[19] COP15 attracted 33,200 delegates, the side event was attended by 60 people (15 journalists, 18 speakers, 27 audience)[20][not ^in ^citation given] According to Lenore Taylor of The Australian, Professor Ian Plimer, "a star attraction of the two-day event", attracted an audience of 45.[21]
Utility Air Regulatory Group v. Environmental Protection Agency
See also: Utility Air Regulatory Group v. Environmental Protection Agency
In December 2013 CFACT served as amicus curiae for the Southeastern Legal Foundation in the review of the Utility Air Regulatory Group v. Environmental Protection Agency case.
Their main argument presented was:
The EPA's attempt to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from stationary sources without authority from congress in order to accomplish its preferred policy objectives violates the separation of powers.[22]
On the issue, CFACT policy adviser Paul Driessen commented that:
The real threat to public health and welfare is not climate change. It is EPA and what this rogue agency is doing in the name of preventing climate change. If the Supreme Court allows this, by giving carte blanche authority to EPA, the battle will rage on countless other fronts, because voters are sick and tired of being lied to, manipulated, defrauded, and forced to pay outrageous prices for oppressive regulations.
Democrats say they plan to use climate change to attack Republicans in 2014. I say, Bring it on![23]
The challenges were unanimously rejected by a three-judge panel at the D.C. circuit court, some on the merits and some over issues of standing.[24]
The Supreme Court accepted review of the case and heard oral arguments on February 24, 2014.[25]
On June 23, 2014, the Court reaffirmed EPA’s authority to regulate greenhouse gas emissions under the Clean Air Act. Justice Antonin Scalia commented “... EPA is getting almost everything it wanted in this case, ... It sought to regulate sources that it said were responsible for 86 percent of all the greenhouse gases emitted from stationary sources nationwide. Under our holdings, EPA will be able to regulate sources responsible for 83 percent of those emissions.”[26]

Who is Cfact? Several examples will make this clear.
Example 1.
“Recently we have all learned of the emails that emerged from the University of East Anglia, a scandal that has come to be known as Climategate. To me, it seems abundantly clear that the proponents of global warming have been cooking the science to produce the results they wanted. They’ve supressed data, colluded, stifled debate, threatened scientific journals that published opposing viewpoints and placed climate propaganda ahead of climate science. We’re talking about such names as James Hansen, Kevin Trenbirth, Ben Santer, Phil Jones, Michael Mann, Tom Karl, Gavin Schmidt, Keith Briffa among others. These are not a small, isolated band of insignificant scientists, as our friends at the BBC, Washington Post, Guardian and other media sources would like to assert. These are literally the founding fathers of global warming.” – CFACT founder Craig Rucker
Perhaps Mr. Rucker is unaware of the fact that “climategate” was debunked despite it’s overwhelming promotion among the conservative news media. The truth is that an investigation by the British government cleared the CRU of any wrongdoing. Claims of a “global warming conspiracy” were greatly exagerated (duh).
Example 2.
CFACT is a member of the Cooler Heads Coalition, the goal of which is
dispelling the myths of global warming through sound science and analysis.
The truth is that an overwhelimg of concensus exists in the scientific comunity regarding the facts of climate change.
Example 3.
Most telling is their statement of purpose:
In 1985, the Committee For A Constructive Tomorrow (CFACT) was founded to promote a positive voice on environment and development issues. Its co-founders, David Rothbard and Craig Rucker, believed very strongly that the power of the market combined with the applications of safe technologies could offer humanity practical solutions to many of the world’s pressing concerns. A number of leading scientists, academics, and policy leaders would also agree with them and soon joined their effort, along with thousands of citizens from around the country.
Today, this Washington DC-based group is a highly respected organization and its voice can be heard relentlessly infusing the environmental debate with a balanced perspective on environmental stewardship. With an influential and impressive scientific advisory board, aggressive collegiate program, CFACT Europe, United Nations representation, Adopt-A-Village project, Global Social Responsibility program, and “Just the Facts” national radio commentary, CFACT has and continues to offer genuine positive solutions to today’s global challenges.
The organization has been termed “invaluable” by the Arizona Republic, it has been lauded for its “effort to bring sound science to the environmental debate” by a former president of the National Academy of Sciences, and has been praised by a respected Boston Globe columnist for “a record of supplying absolutely solid information.”
CFACT is the Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow, a conservative Washington D.C. non-profit whose purpose is to denounce environmental activism and awareness in order to promote free-market programs to the goal of economic colonialism in developing countries. Do not be fooled.
Bonus:
CFACT is a501(c)(3) tax-exempt non-profit group under the of code of the U.S. Internal Revenue Service.[7] On its website, CFACT does not disclose its corporate or foundation funders.[8]
Media Transparency calculates that between 1991 and 2006 CFACT gained $1,280,000 from 18 grants from only two foundations — the Carthage Foundation and the Sarah Scaife Foundation.[9] The Carthage Foundation granted $1,105,000 to CFACT between 1991 – 2006, while the Sarah Scaife Foundation sent $175,000 to the group between 1996 – 2001.
On its website tracking grants to groups, the conservative Capital Research Center listed CFACT as having received grants of $60,500 from Chevron between 1994 and 1998. (The CRC lists the grants comprising $16,000 in each of 1994, 1995 and 1996 and $12,500 in 1998). The CRC also listed CFACT from having received $25,000 from DaimlerChrysler Corporation Fund $25,000 and a token $500 from the Ford Motor Company Fund.[10]
ExxonMobil contributed $5,000 in each of 1997 and 1998.[10] Greenpeace’s ExxonSecrets website adds that Exxon has contributed a further $577,000 between 2000 and 2007.[11]

CFACT not in darkside:
Desmog: [“The Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow (CFACT) was founded in 1985 to pursue a free-market approach to environmental issues. They describe their role as "relentlessly infusing the environmental debate with a balanced perspective on environmental stewardship."
According to Media Matters, CFACT's main focus is promoting what it describes as "destructive environmental policies," and it has "waged a decades-long war on environmental activism." [1]
CFACT is darkside/crypto on the offensive because it is trying to destroy PIRGs (Public Interest Research Groups, named specifically as a problem in the Powell Memo, as was its inspiration Ralph Nader (aside form marxist marcuse the only enemy to be called by name?). Nader of course was dangerous because he was successfully challenging the nonsense that seat belts and windshields that didn't breaking into bayonet would bankrupt the automobile industrry. Such a threat was the car companies paid private invesitgators to follow him and prostitutes to try to blackmail him; when he won several hundred thousand dollars in damages for thus behavior, he promptly used the money to fund the PIRGs, which of course leveraged it to get even more information about corporate malfeasance.
So successful and vlauable were these, that universities and colleges all over the country started their own, some even getting funding from the student body. Een worse, studentswere getting the inspiration and skills to move into politics and activism (e.g., U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), Sierra Club Executive Director Carl Pope, and Randy Hayes of the Rainforest Action Network). The right's reaction was to crank up the incubator, often taking the form of funding rightwing newspapers, but also trying to choke off funding the PIRGs as political (as if the Federalist Society was not). [Cautionary ironic tale: CFACT have an award to Helen P. Chenoweth-Hage, who managed to get elected to Congress from Idaho in the 1994 Gingrich takeover by beating up on her opponent for raising the top tax rate from 34 to 36%, (which led to the first balaced budget in decades and the longest economic expanion in US history); LCV in single digits. She attacked Clinton for his affair, despite the fact she had had her own for six years, but she was a lobbyist, and God had forgiven her.
wiki: “During her tenure, she was referred to by her most outspoken critics as a "poster-child for the militias," and in February 1995 she voiced the suspicion that armed federal agents were landing black helicopters on Idaho ranchers' property to enforce the Endangered Species Act, in line with a longstanding conspiracy theory. "I have never seen them," Chenoweth said in an interview in The New York Times. "But enough people in my district have become concerned that I can't just ignore it. We do have some proof."[6] The Los Angeles Times editorialized that during the campaign she gained national attention by "holding 'endangered salmon bakes' during fundraisers, serving canned salmon to ridicule the listing of Idaho salmon as an endangered species." She was quoted as saying in response, "It's the white, Anglo-Saxon male that's endangered today."[7]“She did honor her promise not to run for a third term, but after retiring she rented a car and drove 300 miles rather than undergo a secondary airport search. Sadly (ironic part:) she died in an SUV when she was thrown out; those in seatbelts had only minor injuries]
In 2009, CFACT hired Marc Morano, a former spokesman for Sen. James Inhofe, to run ClimateDepot.com. According to Morano, the site was designed to offer research and environmental news that questions the theory of man-made global warming.”end ] Koch, Exxon, Scaife funders. Morano: Hansen will inspire eco-terrorism (equals torching SUV's). CFACT sponsors Climate Depot.
–
[“ In late 2005, evangelical leaders like Rick Warren joined a drive to back a major initiative to fight global warming, saying “millions of people could die in this century because of climate change, most of them our poorest global neighbors." To counter this historic shift in the evangelical community, a group called the “Interfaith Stewardship Alliance” (ISA) was launched to oppose action on carbon emissions and to deny the existence of climate change. One of the men guiding this group was Paul Driessen, a consultant for ExxonMobil, the mining industry, and for CFACT.”]
Analysis: Rove learning how to shepherd the evangelicals was crucial to getting W elected in Texas and then as president. Moreover, we have seen Christianity as one of the four dove-tailing ideologies that keep the right in power. So the Christian stewardship movement is a threat in several respects. God promised not to destroy the word again after The Flood, so clearly AGW is not a threat (puny man does not have the power to alter His creation). The stewards, on the other hand, say the way to gorfy God is to preserve his creation (an intersting bridge also built regarding mercury: it harms the unborn). Thus the Cornwall Alliance to kill stewardship matters. Green Dragon (serpent is satan).

In 2009, CFACT hired Marc Morano, a former spokesman forSen. James Inhofe, to run ClimateDepot.com. According to Morano, the site was designed to offer research and environmental news that questions the theory of man-made global warming.
Stance on Climate Change
"Many climatologists and astrophysicists believe recent sun spot, Pacific Ocean and global temperature trends suggest that our planet may have entered a cool phase that could last for 25 years. If that is the case, the additional carbon dioxide being emitted by China, India and other developing countries could bring a major additional benefit: helping to protect wildlife habitats, enhance oceanic biota and preserve crop yields under sub-optimal climatic conditions." [2]
CFACT is a member of the Cooler Heads Coalition, which describes its aim as"dispelling the myths of global warming through sound science and analysis." [3]
Funding
CFACT has received over $4.1 million in funds from Donor's Trust and Donor's Capital Fund between 2002-2011, plus an additional $582,000 from ExxonMobil between 1998-2012, according to Greenpeace's updated report, Dealing In Doubt.
Media Matters breaks down CFACT's previous funding as follows: [1]
- **Carthage Foundation** — $1,305,000
- Exxon Mobil — $467,000
- **Sarah Scaife Foundation** — $535,000
CFACT has received $582,000 from ExxonMobil since 1998. [4]

CFACT is an official Co-sponsor of the Heartland Institute's Seventh International Conference on Climate Change (ICCC7).
December, 2011
CFACT generated media attention at the COP17 Conference in Durban when they parachuted onto a Durban beach waving "Climategate 2.0" banners. Accompanying them was prominent climate change skeptic Lord Christopher Monckton.
Later in the day, CFACT arranged a press conference with Senator Inhofe where they released Climate Depot's new "A-Z Climate Reality Check" special report. [7]
December, 2009
CFACT hosted an event called The Copenhagen Climate Challenge at the same time as the COP15 conference in Copenhagen.
Craig Rucker, Executive Director of CFACT,spoke to the press:
"We think there is no consensus on climate change and there should not be a treaty from Copenhagen based on a lack of consensus."[8]
Ian Plimer wasreported to be "a star attraction of the two-day event" which also featured Fred Singer, Nils Axel Morner, and other climate change skeptics. [9]
August 2, 2002
Was one of a group of right-wing think tanks including Americans for Tax Reform, theAmerican Enterprise Institute, and the Competitive Enterprise Institute who lobbiedfor President Bush to boycott the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg. Bush did not attend. [10]
June 7, 2002
CFACT President David Rothbard signed aletter to President Bush that asked him to withdraw the "Climate Action Report 2002." [EPA CTW // nat assessment]
The letter summarized that Bush should direct that the report "be re-written on the basis of sound science and without relying on discredited products of the previous administration."
The report adds that Bush should "dismiss or re-assign all administration employees who are not pursuing your agenda, just as you have done in several similar instances." [11]
September 27, 2000
CFACT and the National Center for Public Policy Research awarded Congressman Helen Chenoweth- Hage (R-ID) the new "Friend of American Freedom Award" which recognized her for her "distinguished record of defending the United States against environmental treaties, United Nations (U.N.) programs and other globalist policies that pose a threat to the nation's sovereignty." Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow
3. Climate denying group compares U.N. talks about climate change to the Holocaust—immediately after saying there’s no comparison
We know what you’re thinking. Oh no they di-int. Well, oh yeah, they did. But first, the head of the rabidly anti-science [4] Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow (CFACT), wrote in a fundraising email [5] unearthed byDeSmogBlog [6] that nothing can be compared to what happened during the Holocaust at Aushwitz and Birkenau, which he had just visited. Certainly not the climate negotiations [7] currently taking place in Poland.
“There simply is no parallel,” he wrote.
OK then, that’s that. Can’t be compared. Not going to do it.
“Surely, the political and policy battles we are fighting cannot even begin to compare to the horrors represented by those camps,” he affirmed.
Yes, yes. Why would anyone even go there?
And yet, having said he mustn’t, go there he does:
“Yet such examples from history are instructive to show just how far otherwise-civilized people can descend when they are gripped by false ideologies and twisted utopian ambitions," he continued.
“They reveal the loss of freedom, taken to its ugliest level.
“Right now, the UN is attempting to carry out what its climate chief last year termed “a complete economic transformation of the world.”
And this is why, he reasoned, believers in freedom, haters of Holocausts, you should give our organization money. So that we can keep fighting science, progress, international cooperation.
That’s it. That’s the argument. That’s all he’s got.

Video: Glenn Beck brings ExxonMobil-linked religious front group to tell Christians not to believe in “man-caused" climate change
By Joe Romm on Oct 16, 2010 at 8:56 am
“How is it we’ve had ice ages — and yet there were no SUVs?”
In June, ThinkProgress published an exclusive investigation into the Cornwall Alliance “” a corporate front designed to deceive evangelicals into doubting the science underpinning climate change." Yesterday, Fox News hate-talker Glenn Beck brought on a representative from the group to tout Cornwall’s new DVD, “Resisting the Green Dragon,” which claims the climate change movement is a “false religion,” and a nefarious conspiracy to empower eugenicists and create a “global government.” TP’s Lee Fang has the story.
The DVD, which Cornwall is distributing to evangelical churches around the country, seems to be designed perfectly for Beck’s world view, and unsurprisingly, the Cornwall guest and Beck exchanged bizarre conspiracy theories. Watch it:
The Cornwall Alliance appears to be a creation of a group called the James Partnership, a nonprofit run by Chris Rogers and Peter Stein, according to documents filed with the Virginia State Corporation Commission. Rogers, who heads a media and public relations firm called CDR Communications, collaborates with longtime oil front group operative David Rothbard, the founder and President of the Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow (CFACT) and Jacques Villarreal, a lower level stafferat CFACT, for his James Partnership group. In the past, Rogers’ firm has worked for the Bush administration and for the secretive conservative planning group, theCouncil for National Policy.
According to public records, the following entities are all registered to the same address, 9302-C Old Keene Mill RoadBurke, VA [22015, an office park in suburban Virginia:
- Rogers’ consulting firm, CDR Communications
- Rogers’ nonprofit hub, the James Partnership
- The new “Resisting the Green Dragon” website
In late 2005, evangelical leaders like Rick Warren joined a drive to back a major initiative to fight global warming, saying “millions of people could die in this century because of climate change, most of them our poorest global neighbors." To counter this historic shift in the evangelical community, a group called the “Interfaith Stewardship Alliance” (ISA) was launched to oppose action on carbon emissions and to deny the existence of climate change. One of the men guiding this group wasPaul Driessen, a consultant for ExxonMobil, the mining industry, and for CFACT.
For “stream lining” reasons, ISA relaunched as the Cornwall Alliance in 2006. With the new name came a redesigned website,
web videos, and an organized network of churches to distribute climate change denying propaganda to hundreds of pastors around the country. The branding for the Cornwall Alliance is derived from the “Cornwall Declaration,” a 1999 document pushing back against the creation-care movement in the evangelical community. The Declaration “stressed a free-market environmental stewardship and emphasized that individuals and private organizations should be trusted to care for their own property without government intervention." CFACTPresident Rothbard has been hailed as the “driving force” behind the Cornwall Declaration public relations effort.
CFACT is a gimmicky right-wing organization that does everything it can to try to discredit the science underpinning climate change. For instance, staffers from the group traveled to the Copenhagen conference on climate change to stage silly press conferences with Rush Limbaugh’s former producer and stunts aimed at mocking Greenpeace.

For instance, staffers from the group traveled to the Copenhagen conference on climate change to stage silly press conferences with Rush Limbaugh’s former producer and stunts aimed at mocking Greenpeace.
But who is the “driving force” behind CFACT?According to disclosures, CFACT is funded by at least $542,000 from ExxonMobil, $60,500 from Chevron, and $1,280,000 from Scaife family foundations, which are rooted in wealth from Gulf Oil and steel interests.
CFACT and the Cornwall Alliance, according to disclosures filed with the Washington State Secretary of State’s office, share a common fundraising firm, ClearWord Communications Group. ClearWord has helped raise millions of dollars not only for CFACT and Cornwall, but also for infamous polluter front groups like FreedomWorks, the Institute for Energy Research, and the Competitive Enterprise Institute. Last year, Cornwall produced a video with former Sen. George Allen(R-VA) attacking clean energy legislation as part of a campaign by the ExxonMobil-funded “American Energy Freedom Center.”
In a call to the Cornwall Alliance’s media office, spokesman Quena Gonzalez said Cornwall has no relationship to CFACT and said CFACT President Rothbard has no official capacity with his group. Gonzalez said that in “several years of working” at Cornwall, he had never heard any questions about working with CFACT, and instructed ThinkProgress to contact Calvin Beisner, the national representative for Cornwall. Beisner is a board member of CFACT.
Rothbard had a central role in sparking the founding of Cornwall and is currently a partner with Chris Rogers, the man who runs Cornwall and CDR Communications. Nevertheless, under his capacity as CFACT President, Rothbard’s anti-Greenpeace publicity stunts are reported regularly on the Cornwall blog as breaking news, without any acknowledgement of Rothbard’s relationship with Cornwall.
Gonzalez also said he had never heard of CDR Communications. But according to his own LinkedIn profile, Gonzalez works for CDR Communications as the “Director for Religion and the Environment” at the firm. ThinkProgress contacted Chris Rogers on Monday, who contradicted Gonzalez and said his firm CDR Communications provides “support” for Cornwall but did not clarify.
It appears that Cornwall attempts to carefully hide its backers. Not only did Gonzalez refuse to provide much information, but Cornwall’s website is registered with a special service to hide the identity of the person or group who purchased the domain address.

AARON MATÉ: Now, Suzanne, one of the climate denialists funded by Donors Trust is a group called the Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow.
SUZANNE GOLDENBERG: Yes.
AARON MATÉ: They run the website Climate Depot, which consistently attacks scientists and environmentalists who call for taking on global warming. Now, the head of Climate Depot, Marc Morano, appears frequently on Fox News and also mainstream outlets like CNN. On Monday, the day after tens of thousands of people rallied against the Keystone XL pipeline on the National Mall, Morano appeared on Fox News to warn that Keystone opponents could resort to, quote, "ecoterrorism." And he cited as their inspiration the NASA climatologist James Hansen.
MARC MORANO: So, the leaders at NASA—and, you know, I call him NASA’s resident ex-con—is inspiring these people to potential acts of ecoterrorism. These people believe in this doomsday prophecy. And don’t think they won’t act. I mean, when I was in the U.S. Senate Environment Committee, we had to deal with ecoterrorism when it came to animal rights. We had to deal—there’s been ecoterrorism when it deals with property rights out in Colorado. So it’s a very real thing—torching SUVs. This movement, if it gets frustrated, particularly frustrated with a Democratic president, Obama, who’s supposed to be their standard bearer, and actually goes ahead and approves the pipeline, there are going to be a lot of angry people, not the least of which is probably the NASA scientist going to jail again, James Hansen.
Morano Is Paid By An Industry-Funded Advocacy Group
Morano Is Paid Over $150,000 A Year By An Oil-Funded Organization. Climate Depot is sponsored by the Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow (CFACT), a conservative policy and lobbying organization that has received funding from ExxonMobil and Chevron. CFACT also received over $300,000 in 2011 from Donor's Trust, an anonymously funded group that PBS called the "number one supporter of the groups" that deny climate change. CFACT's 2011 financial disclosure form lists Morano as its highest paid employee at over $150,000 a year. [Media Matters, 11/28/12]
CFACT Claims "Global Warming Claims Are Failing." CFACT denies that there is a scientific consensus on manmade climate change and claims that "real world evidence" shows that "global warming claims are failing." [CFACT.org, accessed 12/11/12]

a fake pirg trying to kill the real ones!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_Interest_Research_Group
History
The first PIRG was a public interest law firm started by Ralph Nader in Washington, D.C. and was much different from the modern conception of PIRG. The State PIRGs emerged in the early 1970s on college campuses across the country.
MPIRG (Minnesota) was the first state PIRG to incorporate (on February 17, 1971), and today is one of the few to remain independent from USPIRG and the Fund.[2] Following the lead of Minnesota, students in Oregon (OSPIRG) and then Massachusetts (MASSPIRG), and finally many other states and Canadian provinces incorporated chapters of PIRG.The PIRGs are responsible for many of theBottle Bills (container-deposit legislation) across the country.
After students organized on college campuses for nearly 10 years, the different State PIRGs established the D.C. arm—U.S. PIRG—to advocate for change on the national level. Nearly simultaneously, the PIRGs founded the Fund For Public Interest Research (FFPIR), the fundraising and citizen outreach arm of the PIRGs. The Fund hires canvassers to go door-to-door or stand on street corners and fundraise for their respective organizations by signing up members and collecting donations (or membership dues). There are roughly 60 Fund canvass offices across the country.
Funding
Student PIRG chapters are typically funded through either a waiveable or a mandatory student fee assessed to each student at the college or university. However, this funding system is controversial due to the political nature of PIRG work.Nationally there were several attempts to remove the PIRG chapters from college campuses, with several being removed, several being retained by majority vote of the student bodies, and many student PIRG chapters reinstated on the contingency that they would solicit their funds directly from individual students rather than by addenda to tuition. Student fees are used only to support Students PIRG chapters.
...The Fund has created a website, Canvassing Works, to respond to some of the criticisms raised by the book.[6] The site includes testimony by former Fund staff who have moved into leading roles in other progressive organizations and other progressive leaders, including U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), Sierra Club Executive Director Carl Pope, Dr. Woody Holton (Associate Professor of American history at the University of Richmond), and Randy Hayes of the Rainforest Action Network.
Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow
From SourceWatch
The Committee For A Constructive Tomorrow (CFACT) was founded in 1985. It does policy and lobbying work on the environment from a libertarian perspective. It touts itself as a conservative answer to the Public Interest Research Groups (e.g. NYPIRG, ConnPIRG et al.), progressive lobbying groups concerned with environmental issues. The PIRGs raise much of their funding from student activity fees at college campuses around the country. CFACT has been involved in efforts to eliminate this funding, or found counter-organizations that would give right-wing causes a piece of the pie.
In December 2009 CFACT was a co-organiser of the :{Copenhagen :(style="background-color:#ffff66;"):}::{Climate Challenge:(style="background-color:#ffffff;"):}:, a conference for climate change skeptics to co-incide with the COP15 climate change conference.[1]^(http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Committee_for_a_Constructive_Tomorrow#cite_note-0)

CFACT is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt non-profit group under the of code of the U.S. Internal Revenue Service.[6]^(http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Committee_for_a_Constructive_Tomorrow#cite_note-5) On its website, CFACT does not disclose its corporate or foundation funders.[7]
Media Transparency calculates that between 1991 and 2006 CFACT gained $1,280,000 from 18 grants from only two foundations -- the Carthage Foundation and the Sarah Scaife Foundation.[8]^(http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Committee_for_a_Constructive_Tomorrow#cite_note-7) The Carthage Foundation granted $1,105,000 to CFACT between 1991 - 2006, while the Sarah Scaife Foundation sent $175,000 to the group between 1996 - 2001.
The CRC also listed CFACT from having received $25,000 from DaimlerChrysler Corporation Fund $25,000 and a token $500 from the Ford Motor Company Fund.[9]
ExxonMobil contributed $5,000 in each of 1997 and 1998.[9]^(http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Committee_for_a_Constructive_Tomorrow#cite_note-CRC-8) Greenpeace's ExxonSecrets website adds that Exxon has contributed a further $577,000 between 2000 and 2007.[10]^(http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Committee_for_a_Constructive_Tomorrow#cite_note-9)

The oily operators behind the religious climate change disinformation front group**, :{Cornwall Alliance:(style="background-color:#ffff66;"):}:**
By Climate Guest Blogger on Jun 19, 2010 at 7:27 am
Watch their absurdly paranoid video asserting environmentalism is “without doubt one of the greatest threats to society” today
Defenders of the dirty energy status quo, particularly the lobbyists and politicians associated with the oil and coal industry, have repeatedly trotted out a group of evangelical leaders known as the Cornwall Alliance to counter the growing sentiment in the evangelical community that anthropogenic climate change is a threat to God’s creation. Cornwall declares that true Christians believe “there is no convincing scientific evidence that human contribution to greenhouse gases is causing dangerous global warming.” In this repost, Wonk Room exposes the Big Oil funding behind the Cornwall Alliance
On Friday, at the polluter-funded Heritage Foundation, Cornwall rolled out its latest campaign called “Resisting the Green Dragon.” Billed as “a Biblical response to one of the greatest deceptions of our day,” the video series claims the entire climate change movement is a “false religion,” a nefarious conspiracy to empower eugenicists and create a “global government.” Watch the absurd trailer here, which portrays the idea of climate change as akin to the Lord of the Rings villain Sauron:
Thus far, Cornwall has been able to masquerade as a legitimate, independent group of pastors and religious leaders opposed to addressing climate change. However, ThinkProgress investigated the group and found deep ties to the oil industry, as well as with longtime right-wing operatives orchestrating the climate science denial machine.
The Cornwall Alliance appears to be a creation of a group called the James Partnership, a nonprofit run by Chris Rogers and Peter Stein, according to documents filed with the Virginia State Corporation Commission. Rogers, who heads a media and public relations firm called CDR Communications, collaborates with longtime oil front group operative David Rothbard, the founder and President of the Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow (CFACT) and Jacques Villarreal, a lower level staffer at CFACT, for his James Partnership group. In the past, Rogers’ firm has worked for the Bush administration and for the secretive conservative planning group, the Council for National Policy.
According to public records, the following entities are all registered to the same address, 9302-C Old Keene Mill Road Burke, VA 22015, an office park in suburban Virginia:
- Rogers’ consulting firm, CDR Communications
- Rogers’ nonprofit hub, the James Partnership
- The Cornwall Alliance
- The new “Resisting the Green Dragon” website
In late 2005, evangelical leaders like Rick Warren joined a drive to back a major initiative to fight global warming, saying “millions of people could die in this century because of climate change, most of them our poorest global neighbors.” To counter this historic shift in the evangelical community, a group called the “Interfaith Stewardship Alliance” (ISA) was launched to oppose action on carbon emissions and to deny the existence of climate chance. One of the men guiding this group was Paul Driessen, a consultant for ExxonMobil, the mining industry, and for CFACT.
The Declaration “stressed a free-market environmental stewardship and emphasized that individuals and private organizations should be trusted to care for their own property without government intervention.”CFACT President Rothbard has been hailed as the “**driving force**” behind the Cornwall Declaration public relations effort.
But who is the “driving force” behind CFACT? According to disclosures, CFACT is funded by at least $542,000 from ExxonMobil, $60,500 from Chevron, and $1,280,000 from Scaife family foundations, which are rooted in wealth from Gulf Oil and steel interests.
George Allen (R-VA) attacking clean energy legislation as part of a campaign by the :{ExxonMobil-funded:(style="background-color:#fff200"):}: “American Energy Freedom Center.”
In a call to the Cornwall Alliance’s media office Monday afternoon, spokesman Quena Gonzalez said Cornwall has no relationship to CFACT and said CFACT President Rothbard has no official capacity with his group. Gonzalez said that in “several years of working” at Cornwall, he has never heard any questions about working with CFACT, and instructed ThinkProgress to contact Calvin Beisner, the national representative for Cornwall. Incidentally, Beisner is a board member of CFACT.
Not only did Gonzalez refuse to provide much information, but Cornwall’s website is registered with a special serviceto hide the identity of the person or group who purchased the domain address.
