Most notably and most clearly getting under Smith's skin, Mann cited a recent Science Magazine article describing Smith's comments at the Heartland conference. Mann read the killer quote about how Smith "acknowledged that the committee is now a tool to advance his political agenda rather than a forum to examine important issues facing the U.S. research community."

In response, Lamar Smith, the esteemed media critic who cited the Daily Mail's bogus Bates story, who has written for Breitbart and said that people should get their news directly from Trump, claimed that Science Magazine is "not known as an objective magazine." Again, Mann highlighted the foolishness of his fellow witnesses by pointing out how others have corrected Christy many times on the satellite record vs. the thermometer record. “Smith is determined to get to the bottom of what he sees as an

NOAA has objected to the bill because it draws rigid lines between those two priorities and also leaves out other key areas entirely, such as social science research about effectively communicating severe weather warnings.
The bill, known as the “Weather Forecasting Improvement Act,” was the subject of two hearings in the House Science Subcommittee on the Environment, which approved the bill by voice vote on July 9.
At the July 9 markup, Democrats raised objections to the speed with which the bill was progressing, saying there has not been enough time to get input from the weather and climate community.
Experts testified at two previous hearings that advances in weather forecasting typically benefit the accuracy of climate forecasts, and vice versa.
The bill that emerged from the subcommittee markup contains a provision that would require the NOAA administrator to make “weather-related activities” the top priority for planning in all NOAA “line offices,” including the Office of Atmospheric and Oceanic Research, which funds a large portfolio of the agency’s research programs.
Kathryn Sullivan, the acting NOAA director, said drawing a fine line between weather and climate forecasting would be shortsighted.
“The underlying intent of the bill, of course, is one that we embrace," Sullivan said at a press conference at an Arctic climate conference in Washington on Wednesday. But, she said, "There are a number of provisions as currently drafted in it that we find too narrow and not consistent with how the weather enterprise works.”
According to NOAA’s definition, weather forecasts extend to two weeks in advance, while climate forecasts cover time spans beyond two weeks. Such climate forecasts include everything from seasonal drought outlooks, which are relied upon by water managers, wildfire firefighting agencies, and farmers in particular, to long-range climate change projections that provide insight into how the planet is likely to respond to increasing amounts of manmade greenhouse gases.
The House bill places an emphasis on short-term weather forecasting compared to climate. Bridenstine press secretary Sheryl Kaufman told Climate Central that the bill would prompt “A shift in priority so that there is a higher priority on weather forecasting” within NOAA, when compared to climate research.

Rep. Judy Biggert, R-Ill., who sits on the House Science Committee, has a special relationship with scientists—they’re her constituents. Her district includes the Energy Department’s Argonne National Laboratory, which researches high-energy physics and is developing technology that could enable electric cars to travel twice their current distance before recharging. Biggert worries that candidates like Perry will get the party branded as antiscience. “We seem to be moving ahead in a vein that’s not the scientific way,” she said of Republicans. “And that’s a shame, because there are a lot of us that really believe in the sciences and look to scientists. It’s a concern.”
