Credentials
Joanne Nova holds a Bachelor of Science degree in microbiology from the University of Western Australia. She also has a Graduate Certificate in Science Communications from the Australian National University. [1]
Background
Joanne Nova is a self-proclaimed climate change skeptic who declares that science has disproved the theory of anthropogenic global warming (AGW). Nova's most notable work in the area of climate change is the controversial document, "The Skeptic's Handbook."
The Skeptic's Handbook asserts that global warming is not caused by greenhouse gasses, that "the world has not warmed since 2001," and that any global warming is a natural process.
After graduation, Nova joined the Shell Questacon Science Circus, a Shell-sponsored program that employs university students to travel around Australia teaching interactive science programs to children. Currently, Nova works as a professional speaker, the Director of Science Speak, and the writer and creator of the blog, JoNova.
Science Speak is a business Nova runs with fellow climate change skeptic David Evans. It describes itself as a "scientific modeling and mathematical research company," that also "speak[s] about some science issues." The website appears dedicated to the issue of global warming, yet doesn't appear to provide any examples of current projects or areas of research.[2]
Furthermore, Science Speak does not accredit Nova with any of its research in the area of global warming. With the exception of "The Skeptic's Handbook," Nova's written commentary on the failures of science communicators and journalists on the issue of global warming has been relatively limited to her personal blog.
Stance on Climate Change
The International Climate Science Coalition (ICSC) lists Joanne Nova as a "qualified endorser" of the Manhattan Declaration. The ICSC defines a qualified endorser as an individual that is "well-trained in science and technology or climate change-related economics and policy." [3]
Those who sign the Manhattan Declaration must agree, among other things, that "global warming is not a global crisis" and that "attempts by governments to legislate costly regulations on industry and individual citizens to encourage CO2 reduction will slow development while having no appreciable impact on the future trajectory of global climate change."
Key Quotes
"In the head-spinning cosmos of climate change, everyday hundreds of people claim there are 'thousands of papers' in support of a theory, yet no one can actually name one single paper with empirical evidence that shows carbon dioxide emissions are the main cause of global warming." [4]
Key Deeds
March 8 - 10, 2009
Nova was a speaker at the Heartland Institute's 2009 International Conference on Climate Change where she is listed as one of several specialists on the issue of global warming. [5]
She gave a presentation entitled, "The Great Global Fawning: How Science Journalists Pay Homage to Non-Science and Un-Reason."
DeSmogBlog found that the sponsors of the 2009 conference had collectively received over $47 million from major oil companies and right-wing foundations.
2008
Published a booklet titled "Skeptics Handbook" (PDF). The booklet claims to be a guide to "Rise above the mod-slinging in the Global Warming Debate."
It summarizes many arguments popular with climate change skeptics including how greenhouse gasses haven't caused any warming, that temperature has led changes in cO2 emissions, that "Temperatures are not rising," and that "Carbon dioxide is already doing almost all the warming it can do. [6]
"The Skeptic's Handbook" has been debunked numerous times by DeSmogBlog and also by John Cook of Skeptical Science who wrote an article titled "A Scientific Guide to the 'Skeptic's Handbook': The evidence that humans are causing global warming."
Nova has published a sequel, "The Skeptic's Handbook II" (PDF), also known as "Global Bullies Want Your Money." This handbook generally attacks climate science with political polemic while accusing "Big Government" of squandering money on climate change.
Nova also published a lengthy paper for the **Science and Public Policy Project (SPPI)** titled "Climate Money" which appears to be an extended version of her second handbook. The SPPI article contends that the government has wasted money by pursing climate policy, and that climate science is generally one-sided and inaccurate, at least when it agrees that humans are causing global warming.
December, 2007
In 2007, the Heartland Institute arranged for and funded a group of scientists to be sent to Bali to challenge and protest the annual conference of the parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. [7]
Included in this team of "scientists" was Joanne Nova, as well as other prominent skepticsChristopher Monckton, Vincent Gray, Will Alexander, and David Evans.
The group's activities attracted media coverage from outlets such as Fox News, Rush Limbaugh's radio show, and the Drudge Report.

Publications
Although Joanne Nova has not published any research in peer-reviewed journals, she is often presented as an expert in the area of climate science. For example, Fred Singer's Science & Environmental Policy Project (SEPP) describes Joanne Nova as holding a PhD in meteorology.[8]
Nova has also given presentations for the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI) and the Cooler Heads Coalition.

joanne Nova is an Australian writer, blogger, and speaker. Born Joanne Codling, she adopted the stage name "Nova" in 1998 when she was preparing to host a children's television program.[2][3] She is prominent for promoting climate change denial.[4][5]
Education
Nova received a Bachelor of Science from the University of Western Australia. Her major was microbiology, molecular biology. Nova received a Graduate Certificate in Scientific Communication from the Australian National University in 1989.[6]
Career
For four years, Nova jointly co-ordinated[7] the Shell Questacon Science Circus, a partnership between Questacon, the Shell Oil Company Australia and the Australian National University, which operates all over Australia. Nova was an Associate Lecturer of Science Communication at Australian National University.[8]
From November 1999 to February 2000, Nova was the host of the first series of Australian children's science television show Y?[9] She was a regular guest on ABC Radio. She is a director of GoldNerds, a gold investment advice business.[10]
Nova has published a book called Serious Science Party Tricks, which is aimed at children. Nova has written for The Spectator, and has had columns published on the Op-Ed pages of The Australian.
Climate change denial advocacy
She self-published[8] the book The Skeptics Handbook, which rejects the scientific consensus on climate change and promotes various falsehoods about climate change.[11] The book argues that temperatures have not increased, and that greenhouse gases do not contribute to climate change.[11][5] The book promotes the myth that there is already so much CO2 in the atmosphere that adding more will not have an impact on temperatures.[11][12] The book was widely distributed in the United States by**The Heartland Institute**,known primarily for promoting pseudoscientific views on climate change and the harms of smoking.[11][13] In 2009, Nova self-published[8] a sequel, Global Bullies Want Your Money, and in the same year she wrote a paper for the SPPI titled Climate Money.[14] That year, she gave a presentation at the Heartland Institute, titled "The Great Global Fawning: How Science Journalists Pay Homage to Non-Science and Un-Reason."[11]
She has falsely claimed that fewer than half of climate scientists agree with the IPCC's conclusion that CO2 is the dominant contributor to climate change.[4] PolitiFact described that as a "flat-out wrong" interpretation of data from a survey, and the lead author of the survey in question said that the survey showed "a strong majority of scientists agree that greenhouse gases originating from human activity are the dominant cause of recent warming."[4] Nova has argued that climate science is distorted by money, saying "thousands of scientists have been funded to find a connection between human carbon emissions and the climate. Hardly any have been funded to find the opposite."[15]
Nova had a five-part debate on AGW with Dr. Andrew Glikson, first on Quadrant Online,[16] and continuing on her own blog.[17] In 2012, she appeared in the ABC Television documentary I Can Change Your Mind About ... Climate with herpartner David Evans, in discussion with Nick Minchin and Anna Rose.[18]

Joanne "Jo" Nova (real name Joanne Codling) is an Australian writer, speaker, former TV host, anti-science presenter and a professional wingnut.[1] She maintains a blog which regularly regurgitates debunked climate denial myths, making her the poor Aussie's Ian Plimer or Andrew Bolt.[2] The site also has on its header the highly ironic phrase "Tackling tribalist groupthink." She has also written a handbook called "The Skeptic's Handbook," a brief pamphlet that reads like it was copy-pasted from another denialist site without the slightest whiff of actual research and peppered with pretty pictures.[3] The handbook concentrates on a few of the greatest hits, including: Satellites and weather balloons showing no warming (they do); the Oregon Petition "debunking" the scientific consensus (it doesn't); carbon dioxide lagging, not leading temperature change (ignoring Milankovitch cycles and feedbacks); the carbon dioxide effect being saturated (it isn't); and bad weather station siting (relying on the self-debunked work of Anthony Watts).[4]
In between regurgitating debunked climate myths, she often posts nonsensical fiscal arguments; then breaks into a general bitching session about anything including the denial crowd pleaser, the **Gore bash fest**.
She downplays the funding she and other denialists receive from the Heartland Institute and the Science and Public Policy Institute.

H.4 Funny foreign grants -NZ, CA, AU, IN?
On the previous page, H55a-H55e listed 4 foreign 2007 recipients:
NRSP – National Resources Stewardship Project - $25,000 IRS-10F
APCO’s PR professional Tom Harris305 was the Executive Director of this
front group, whose website disappeared by December 2008.306
He was
behind the Bali petition, so this money might have helped pay for that.307
FCPP – Frontier Center for Public Policy308
- $25,000
This Manitoba-based think tank included Research Advisors in 2006:309
Alex Avery Hudson Institute, has written for E&CN, §X.2.
Tim Ball Chairman of Scientific Advisory Committee for NRSC. 310
He spoke at ICCC-1, was on Heartland “experts” lists.
Wendell Cox Wendell Cox Consultancy, has written often for E&CN.
NZCSC – New Zealand Climate Science Coalition - $25,000 IRS-10F
Started in 2006,
311 founders included Vincent Gray, Bob Carter, Warwick
Hughes, Roger Dewhurst, and Owen McShane (the receiver of money).
ICSC – International Climate Science Coalition - $40,000 IRS-10F
Started in 2007, Tom Harris is Executive Director.312 Terry Dunleavy (NZ)
and Bryan Leyland (NZ) are officers, and Heartland’s Jay Lehr is a
Director. The address was Terry Dunleavy’s.
NZCSC, ICSC and the NZ ACT party involved NZ’s Alan Gibbs. 313
Hot Topic details Heartland funding of NZCSC and ICSC.314 Harris,
Leyland and Dewhurst commented there, offering credibility calibration.
Gray, Leyland and McShane attended the IPCC Bali 2007 meeting, in
support of CFACT, but paid for at least in part by Heartland.315
Of these 4 organizations, 3 were not registered as charities in their home
countries. Some of the money helped send to Bali some people with strong
opinions, whose climate expertise was doubtful at best. Unless they had
IRS “determination letters,” Heartland is required to show that they used
the money to further exempt purposes. IRS-10F
Of course, NZ might want to inquire of McShane and Dunleavy, and CA of
Harris as to whether these grants were reported as taxable income.
As for 2008-2009, I can only guess: IRS-7F, IRS-10F.
More money to NZCSC or ICSC?
Money to IPA316 to get ready for 2010 ICCC-5 in Sydney?
317
Money to Joanne Nova for Skeptic’s Handbook?318
It has been
translated into many languages (H57f?) and sent to 14,000 US school
board presidents by Heartland., Z.2009.08.11, §N.2.
Money to India, possibly Barun M. Mitra, §G.4.? See 2010 Bradley
grant to India, Fig. H.1.5. Mitra is not a climate researcher,
319 and advisors to his think tank include Tibor Machan, §X.2
