Aureannu Sidhe

Recorded remark attributed to Lord Halvar Trenwick of the Eastern Dominion, spoken in private council, third winter after the Opening of the Sidhe Roads.
I will tell you plainly, and you may carry my words where you like: they are not fair. Not to my eyes, not to any honest measure, and certainly not in the way the songs insist. If this is beauty, then it is beauty stripped of warmth, of invitation, of any instinct that would make a man step closer rather than back.
I saw my first Aureannu two weeks past. She stood where a woman ought to stand, wore cloth cut as ours is cut, spoke our tongue without error or accent. And yet everything about her was wrong in the way a well-made coffin is wrong when you see it standing open in daylight. Proportioned, yes. Composed, yes. But dead to the common grammar of the living.
Her eyes were the worst of it. Not large, not small—simply elsewhere. Set wide, fixed upon me as one might study an inscription on a wall: with attention, without interest. There was no hunger in them, nor kindness, nor even contempt. Just a sort of exactness. I have seen the same look in surgeons deciding where to cut, and in tax clerks determining arrears. It is not a look that belongs in a love song.
And the face—Saints preserve us, the face. Smooth as porcelain, untroubled by expression, with those nostrils set like vents in stone. I have heard some whisper they resemble additional senses, or a refinement of breath. All I know is that no part of me could forget that the thing before me did not breathe as I do, and did not need to. It reminded me of a corpse preserved in ice, not decayed, not suffering, simply… finished.
So when I hear these bards—these soft-handed fools—sing of fair Sidhe maidens, of moonlit smiles and hearts ensnared, I feel only revulsion. They have never stood across a table from one. They have never felt the air go thin with attention, never realized that what watches them is not deciding whether to desire them, but whether to account for them.
Do not mistake me: the Aureannu were not hostile. They were courteous. They were precise. And that is precisely why I distrust them. A wolf bares teeth. A lover leans in. A human reveals something of himself without meaning to. The Aureannu do none of these things. They reveal only what they intend, and nothing more.
If that unsettles me, it is not because I am small-minded or fearful of the strange. It is because I recognize a thing that does not belong to our stories, no matter how loudly the songs insist otherwise. Call them diplomats, call them envoys, call them necessities of this new age if you must. But do not ask me to pretend they are beautiful.
They are not fair folk.
They are something colder.
And I would sooner trust a blade I can see than a face that has learned how to pass for one.
The Aureannu: The Sun-Sidhe of Terennu
Appearance
At first glance, the Aureannu—known colloquially (and often insultingly) as "SunSidhe"—can pass for strikingly attractive humans. Their similarity to humanity is skin-deep, however. A closer look reveals their otherworldly grace and perfection: smooth, flawless skin, symmetrical features, and an ethereal poise that seems almost unnatural. They are universally slender, healthy, and agile, with an uncanny air of purpose in every movement.
- Facial Features: Their eyes are distinctly slanted, gleaming with a brightness that feels as if it could pierce through any deception. While humans find these features captivating, many also find them unnerving, as though looking into the face of a predator wearing a polite smile.
- Markings and Tattoos: Many Aureannu are born with swirling, curving patterns on their skin, reminiscent of ancient, organic runes. These are often enhanced with tattoos that accentuate their mystique.
- Uncanny Similarity: To the untrained eye, Aureannu seem to all "look alike." This perception stems from their racial symmetry and harmony of features, which humans often struggle to differentiate.
Note on Terminology: In the Kingdom of Humanity, "elf" is derived from the Kingdom's term for "treacherous," a linguistic jab born of centuries of mistrust. Most Aureannu resent this term and prefer their own designation.
Terennu: The Land of the Aureannu
Geography
To the east of the Kingdom of Humanity lies Terennu, a highland plateau rising sharply above the Shadowlands. Terennu is a land of striking contrasts—arid deserts, lush coastal enclaves, and islands scattered like jewels across sapphire waters. The region is known for its titanic interlocking caves, which serve as homes to the Aureannu. These caves are marvels of ancient design, with their great openings allowing sunlight to flood vast subterranean cities.
- Subterranean Marvels: The cities of Terennu are breathtaking—vast, ancient palaces of Atlantis-like design, with enormous statues and chambers carved from living stone. These are no mere shelters but works of art that rival the beauty of the Dreamlands themselves.
- Living Space: With plenty of room to house their population of over 80 million, the Aureannu thrive in their harmonious relationship with the land, refusing to disrupt its natural beauty.
Society and Politics
Aureannu society is deceptively anarchic, appearing leaderless to outsiders. In truth, their great racial solidarity allows them to organize with remarkable efficiency, forming consensus through an almost instinctive understanding of one another’s needs and intentions.
- The King of Terennu: While Terennu is nominally a kingdom, its king is more of a ceremonial figurehead. Legally speaking, the King of Terennu is a vassal of the Human King, yet this is a fiction maintained only to preserve relations. In practice, the Aureannu operate entirely independently.
- Political Relations: The King of Terennu spends one week each year with the Human King in an act of symbolic camaraderie. However, humans often doubt the sincerity of this "loyalty," while the Aureannu quietly scoff at the arrangement.
Daily Life
The Aureannu are hunter-gatherers by tradition, living simple yet elegant lives that emphasize sustainability and harmony with their environment. Despite their alien perfection, they are introspective and grounded, often appearing more thoughtful and "sane" than most humans. This stability, however, can come off as emotionally detached or even cold.
Metaphysics and Spirituality
Part Spirit, Part Flesh
The Aureannu exist as hybrids of the physical and the spiritual, a duality not easily perceived by humans. This duality shapes their lives in profound ways:
- Young Aureannu: Until about their first century of life, young Aureannu are largely unaware of their spiritual nature. They live nomadic lives, seeking new experiences, moving from human cities to distant enclaves.
- Older Aureannu: Around the age of 100–150, Aureannu begin to awaken to their spiritual connection. They gain the ability to touch one another in dreams and perceive magical auras in the world around them. This transition is a closely guarded secret, hidden from the young to protect them from the burden of knowledge too soon.
Avalon: The Mystical Home
All Aureannu are connected to a mysterious spiritual domain known as Avalon.
- Nature of Avalon: A place of eternal beauty and peace, Avalon is thought to be a divine sanctuary where a third of all Aureannu live. While inaccessible to most mortals, high-powered wizards are known to occasionally visit Avalon, deepening its mystique.
- Unity with Avalon: As Aureannu grow older and more magical, many seek physical unity with Avalon, leaving behind their mortal forms to exist wholly in this transcendent realm. This truth, like much else about Avalon, is kept from the younger Aureannu.
Other Sidhe
Allies and Enemies
While the Aureannu are distinct in their identity, they maintain relationships—both friendly and hostile—with other "Sidhe" races.
- Allied Races: The Fae Nelra, Zedara, Lastrauri, and Faye Nilri are close allies, sharing a mutual respect for their shared ancestry and mystical roots.
- Neutral Relations: The Aureannu are neutral towards the Haehanil, maintaining a polite distance.
- Hostility Toward Drokka: The Drokka, considered degenerate and corrupt by the Aureannu, are their sworn enemies. Any Drokka presence near Terennu is met with immediate and brutal retaliation.
Ancient Aureannu
Immortality and Ascension
Aureannu are effectively immortal, capable of living over a millennium. As they age, their connection to the spiritual realm deepens, transforming them into beings of immense magical power. This process is gradual, marked by their eventual departure to Avalon.
- The Burden of Knowledge: This truth is hidden from younger Aureannu, who are encouraged to live more human-like lives to avoid becoming burdened by their future too soon.
- Hidden Communities: Thousands of young Aureannu live among humans, particularly in places like Rissen, leading lives almost indistinguishable from mortals.
The Genocide of the 8th Century
The history of the Aureannu is marked by tragedy. In the 8th century, humanity’s fear of Sidhe power led to widespread persecution and genocide.
- Revenge and Influence: Though many Aureannu perished, their retaliation was devastating. Today, they wield significant influence within the Kingdom of Humanity, a fact that the human royalty tries to downplay.
- Current Tensions: While King Kristophe maintains cordial relations with the Aureannu, radical humanist factions like the Alalvarites openly call for their eradication, seeing them as a dangerous reminder of humanity’s fragility.
