lecture today in SINTN on Cortical Circuits for Inhibition...

an inhibitory cell connects to everything in its neighborhood.

see my lecture notes below from May 12 2011... technical tour de force. 2 photon microscopy.

Rafael worked with Winifried Denk who developed it.

Trick is to STIM a cell (one and only one cell) by shining lasers at it...

the laser spot is too small. Must use a photsens compound that will fire the cell when u shine the two interfering lights.

Bottom Line: inhibitory cells are FULLY connected to every pyramidal cell they can reach

(or is it that the pyram cells are connected to every inhib cell within range (a few hundred microns).

Dense mosaic of connectivity... just like an FPGA (before programming).

He mainly studied INHIB cells to EXCIT cells

(the excit cells are all pyramidal cells in his studies (he uses rat cortex slices (frontal or somatosens))

the inhib cells are either PV+ (parvalb +) the most common type of gabaergic inhib cell... these are

the MAIN inhib cells and the target the somas of the pyram cells.

OR SOM inhib cells (thee are the somatostatin + inhib cells) which target the dendrites of the pyram cells.
