The Federal Housing Finance Agency’s director, Bill Pulte, on Thursday marked Rep. Eric Swalwell as the latest foe of President Donald Trump to face a criminal referral for alleged mortgage fraud, according to multiple reports.
Swalwell, a Democrat who has long spoken out against Trump’s administrations and served as an impeachment manager during his second impeachment trial, also filed a civil lawsuit against the president and his allies in 2021 for their role in the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection.
“As the most vocal critic of Donald Trump over the last decade and as the only person who still has a surviving lawsuit against him, the only thing I am surprised about is that it took him this long to come after me,” Swalwell said in a statement.
Pulte alleged in a letter sent to Attorney General Pam Bondi on Wednesday that Swalwell may have made false or misleading statements in loan documents for his $1.2 million Washington property, NBC News first reported.
Swalwell is the fourth Democratic official to be accused of mortgage fraud by Pulte. The others include New York Attorney General Letitia James, Sen. Adam Schiff and Lisa Cook, a Federal Reserve governor.
A grand jury last month criminally indicted James for bank fraud and making false statements to a financial institution over a Virginia property she allegedly listed as a second home but used as a rental property for her niece.
Cook was fired in August from her role at the Fed over Pulte’s allegations, though a federal court in the District of Columbia has ruled that she may remain in the role while her legal challenge remains pending. Her case has made its way to the Supreme Court, which announced it would hear oral arguments starting in December.
Trump accused Schiff of engaging in a “sustained pattern of possible Mortgage Fraud,” in a July post on Truth Social. NOTUS reported in August that the senator formed a legal defense fund to fight the allegations.
“The allegations against Senator Schiff are transparently false, stale, and long debunked,” Preet Bharara, a former U.S. attorney in New York and Schiff’s lawyer for the case, wrote in a statement sent to NOTUS on Tuesday. “The bias here is glaring.”
In his statement Thursday, Swalwell says he has no plans of dropping his lawsuit against the Trump administration.
“I refuse to live in fear in what was once the freest country in the world,” Swalwell said. “Of course, I will not end my lawsuit against him. And I will not stop speaking out against the President and speaking up for Californians.”

in 2020, Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-New York) was not only critical of then-President Donald Trump, but also, of some of his loyalists — including veteran GOP operative Roger Stone. And Mediaite's Diana Falzone, along with The New Republic and The Guardian, is reporting that Stone was so angry with Nadler and Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-California) that year that he made threatening remarks about them.
Falzone reports that Mediaite has obtained a copy of a recording in which Stone, in a Florida restaurant, is heard telling ally Sal Greco, "It's time to do it. Let's go find Swalwell. It's time to do it. Then, we'll see how brave the rest of them are. It's time to do it. It's either Nadler or Swalwell has to die before the election. They need to get the message. Let's go find Swalwell and get this over with. I'm just not putting up with this s*** anymore."
On July 10, 2020, Nadler tweeted comments critical of Trump and Stone, posting, "A jury found Roger Stone guilty. By commuting his sentence, President Trump has infected our judicial system with partisanship and cronyism and attacked the rule of law. @House Judiciary will conduct an aggressive investigation into this brazen corruption."
A Mediaite source told the publication, "Stone had been at war with Nadler and Swalwell for years. He just hates them."
Swalwell and Nadler have both been members of the House Judiciary Committee, which Nadler formerly chaired.
The Guardian's Martin Pengelly reports, "Swalwell is a prominent anti-Trump voice and a magnet for Republican attacks. As Judiciary chair, Nadler oversaw Trump's first impeachment, for seeking political dirt in Ukraine. In 2020, Nadler said the (Judiciary) Committee would investigate Trump's commutation of Stone's sentence on seven counts related to attempts to obstruct the investigation of Russian election interference in 2016. Stone was sentenced to 40 months but never went to prison."
The New Republic's Tori Otten notes, "Stone, a notorious conservative political operative, has long been a loyal Trump adviser and ally. Video footage released in August revealed that Stone began strategizing to overturn the 2020 election at least as early as November 5 — two days before the vote had been called."

Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) blasted House Judiciary Committee chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) for focusing on Hunter Biden's laptop.
"Chairman, I've counted in this hearing – and we're only about an hour and a half in – the use of the word laptop about 20 times," Swalwell told Jordan on Wednesday. "That is bananas to me. You all are bringing up FISA, every single question," he said, referring to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.
"You're essentially saying to the American people that you're guardians of personal security and privacy, but the 2020 election was determined because the FBI didn't let more Americans see a private citizen's nonconsensual nudes?" he remarked, mentioning a furor made by conservatives when Twitter took down naked pictures of the president's son.
Jordan asked Swalwell to yield for a comment, but the Democratic lawmaker refused.
"Like, you should be a party of ideas, not a party of nonconsensual nudes to help you win an election," Swalwell continued. "We should be talking about the mass shootings that occurred over the last ten days. This hearing has turned into absolute chaos."

This is about one client. Donald Trump': Jim Jordan hammered over 'Insurrection LLC' committee
David Badashand The New Civil Rights Movement March 29, 2023
:{U.S. Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) unleashed massive criticism of Jim Jordan Wednesday afternoon, accusing the House Judiciary Committee Chairman of working solely for Donald Trump.
In his opening remarks of a Judiciary subcommittee hearing Swalwell, the Ranking Member, slammed Jordan for refusing to comply with a legal subpoena issued by the U.S. House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack, and criticized the subcommittee for holding a hearing – not on gun violence and mass shootings – but on what the California Democrat said was issues to help the ex-president.
}:
Congressman Swalwell blasted Jordan and his “Committee to Obstruct Justice” on a wide range of issues, including obstructing justice, ordering a district attorney to commit a felony, and lying that Attorney General Merrick Garland labeled parents “domestic terrorists.”
:{“Well, here we are. Another partners’ meeting of Insurrection, LLC,”Swalwell said as he began his remarks. “That’s what this is. This is the newly formed largest law firm in Washington, D.C. Only has one client, maybe a second client that we’re going to learn about today, but that client is former president Donald Trump.”
“Their job,” he said, referring to Jordan’s Judiciary Committee, subcommittees, and his controversial Subcommittee of the Weaponization of the Federal Government, “is to litigate every one of [Trump’s] petty, petty, petty grievances.”}:

“It’s now 321 days since this subpoena was sent to Jim Jordan, that he did not comply with,” Swalwell said, pointing to a large blown-up copy of the subpoena, with the word “subpoena” enlarged exponentially.
“So it’s comical that we are here today, under Jim Jordan’s leadership, asking people why they don’t want to comply with subpoenas. The guy won’t comply with the one that was sent to him 321 days ago, witness to a crime, the crime that has led to more arrests than any investigation in America,” Swalwell observed, referring to the January 6 prosecutions.
“He’s a witness being asked to do his patriotic duty and respond to a subpoena 321 days later, refuses. Also, since the last hearing of this Committee to Obstruct Justice, Chairman Jordan is now in interfering in an independent criminal prosecution. There’s an investigation in Manhattan, also in Atlanta, also at the Department of Justice, into the former president and Jim Jordan has sent a letter to the independently elected District Attorney Alvin Bragg of Manhattan. He is asking Alvin Bragg to commit a felony.”
“Why is he asking Alvin Bragg to commit a felony? To help Donald Trump. Why is it a felony? Because if Alvin Bragg were to turn over what Jim Jordan is asking of him, Bragg would be violating New York law that says you cannot turn over grand jury proceedings, but that’s what they’re asking them to do. Again, the law doesn’t matter if your client is Donald Trump.”
“The other day Jim Jordan was asked, ‘Well, what do you think of the former president who put out on Truth Social the other day, essentially an another call to action? A January 6-like post when the former president said this posting, Jim Jordan was presented with this post by the former president that calls for ‘death and destruction.’ And Mr. Jordan said that he would ‘need his glasses.’ He was looking the other way. Jim Jordan looking the other way.”
READ MORE: Here’s How Five Republicans in Congress Are Responding to the Mass Shooting of 3 Children and 3 Adults in Nashville (Video)
“Well, we have blown up on the screen and we’ve put it right here and I’ll leave it for Jim Jordan. This is what Donald Trump said, Mr. Jordan,” Swalwell said, reading the e-president’s social media post:
“‘What kind of person can charge another person? In this case it former president of the United States who got more votes than any sitting president in history and leading candidate by far for the Republican Party nomination with the crime when it is known by all that? No crime has been committed and also known that potential death and destruction and such a false charge can be catastrophic for our country. Why and who would do such a thing? Only a degenerate psychopath that truly hates the USA?'”
“Again, I’m gonna leave this up here in probably 200 font. So Mr. Jordan doesn’t need his glasses to read it,” Swalwell added, referring to news that Jordan recently refused to comment on a Trump social media post claiming he first hadn’t read it, then when a reporter showed it to him, Jordan said he couldn’t read it because he didn’t have his glasses.
:{
“The same individual who posted this also posted this photo. There you go, Donald. Trump. Real tough guy holding a baseball bat, next to a picture of that independent prosecutor that Jim Jordan wants to commit a felony, Alvin Bragg.”}:
“But you won’t hear from this Committee to Obstruct Justice, any condemnation of what Donald Trump posted. They can’t condemn him. They can’t. So in their silence, they condone it. And in these posts from Donald Trump, he incites more and more Americans to commit violence like a woman who was arrested yesterday, near Times Square with a knife seeking to carry out an act of violence in Donald Trump’s name.”
Swalwell blasted Chairman Jordan for repeatedly falsely claiming that Attorney General Merrick Garland had labeled parents speaking at school board meetings “domestic terrorists,” a lie made by many Republicans and conservatives.
READ MORE: New WSJ Poll Is Devastating for DeSantis and His ‘Anti-Woke’ Policies
“No parent has a right to threaten a school board volunteer. If a threat is brought to the FBI, it’s their duty to investigate those threats. We’ve also learned from all the document production from DOJ and the FBI in the Department of Education, that there is not one instance where the Department of Justice called any parent or a group of parents, ‘domestic terrorists,’ as has been claimed by Jim Jordan.”
:{And he criticized House Republicans, who, under Jim Jordan, had posted a tweet in support of Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and Kanye West.
“It’s also about a tweet that Jim Jordan posted back in the fall. ‘Kanye. Elon. Trump.’ Now after that tweet was posted, Kanye said he’s going to declare ‘DEF CON three on the Jews.’ The tweet stayed up for months. Everyone was like, ‘Hey guys, turns out your hero Kanye West hates the Jews. We all stand with Israel. Please take down the tweet.’ They didn’t take down the tweet. They kept the tweet up. Day after day. Jewish community they’re hurting, they say, ‘Please don’t take, please don’t put this tweet up.’ It stays up.”}:
He also blasted the GOP for holding hearings with witnesses they invited who are anti-police, despite their motto of “backing the blue.”
“Last week, we had a hearing where you could call anyone in America when you have the majority, the power of a subpoena. We had a hearing about the ATF. These guys brought a witness who had just recently tweeted, ‘fuck cops.’ Cops. That’s what this guy tweeted. Anyone on Earth could have come to that hearing and they brought someone that said, ‘fuck cops.’ Then one of their colleagues, this is what she’s selling on her social media: ‘defund the FBI.’ So we went from backing the blue to backing the coup.”
Swalwell concluded his remarks by slamming the committee for doing nothing to reduce gun violence in the wake of Monday’s school mass shooting.
“So we’ll waste our time today on this exercise on behalf of Donald Trump and perhaps Elon Musk, but everyone on their side is going to have to go home this weekend to their constituents and their constituents are going to ask them one question: Three little babies died this week in a school in Nashville. No other committee in Congress has jurisdiction to do something about that except this committee. So you’re on the Judiciary Committee. Three kids are dead. They’re gonna be buried this week. What did you do about it? Did you show up to the Judiciary Committee and fight for those kids? Or did you show up and fight for Donald Trump? They showed up to the first hearing after Nashville and they’re fighting for Donald Trump.”

Ginni Thomas, a far-right Republican activist and the wife of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, has been a consistent promoter of the Big Lie — falsely claiming that the 2020 election was stolen from former President Donald Trump. And when she recently spoke to the January 6 select committee, Ginni Thomas didn’t back down from that claim even though it has been repeatedly debunked.
The watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) voiced its concerns about Ginni Thomas and Justice Thomas in a letter sent to the House Judiciary Committee and the Senate Judiciary Committee on Monday, October 24.
CREW President Noah Bookbinder told those committees, “It is critical that those responsible for the attack on the Capitol be held accountable and that the integrity of the Supreme Court not be tainted by conflicts of interest. The Judiciary Committees have responsibility for the oversight of our judiciary and law enforcement agencies, and investigating Ginni Thomas’ conduct and Justice Thomas’ failure to recuse is an essential exercise of that oversight responsibility.”
READ MORE: [Ginni Thomas has become a 'one-woman constitutional crisis': columnist
CREW, in an October 24 announcement, noted that Justice Thomas “has recused himself from 54 cases since joining the Supreme Court” in 1991 “in order to avoid the perception of potentialconflicts of interest, including 17 cases involving his son.” But according to CREW, Justice Thomas “has never recused because of a potential conflict involving his wife.”
Bookbinder, in the letter, warned, “It is hard to imagine something more damaging to the public trust in the Supreme Court than a Justice ruling on cases that could relate to their spouses’ attempts to overturn American democracy. An immediate investigation is needed.”
The letter was addressed to two Democrats (Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois and Rep. Jerry Nadler of New York) and two Republicans (Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa and Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio).
Bookbinder told the members of Congress, “Ms. Thomas also contacted state officials in key states to encourage them to set aside the results of statewide elections and thereby alter the results of the presidential election. Soon after the 2020 election, Ginni Thomas e-mailed legislators in Arizona asking them to appoint a so-called ‘clean slate of electors’ rather than those legitimately chosen by the people of Arizona. She also contacted legislators in Wisconsin urging them to appoint their own set of electors rather than those chosen by the people of Wisconsin.”

With the U.S. Supreme Court having overturned Roe v. Wade after 49 years, the United States no longer has a national standard on abortion rights, but rather, a wide range of state laws — and on July 1, the Indianapolis Star reported that a ten-year-old Ohio girl had an abortion in Indianapolis, Indiana because of abortion restrictions in her own state. Other media outlets reported that she was allegedly raped, and on July 13, the Columbus Dispatch reported that a man had been arrested and charged in the case.
Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell of California, during a July 14 hearing, discussed the case with anti-abortion activist Catherine Glenn Foster, president and CEO of Americans United for Life — and Foster denied, much to Swallwell’s shock, that the pregnancy’s termination qualified as an abortion.
When Foster was asked if a “ten-year-old” would “choose to carry a baby,” Foster responded, “I believe it would probably impact her life. And so therefore, it would fall under any exception and would not be an abortion.”
Sounding shocked by her response, Swalwell interjected, “Wait, it would not be an abortion if a ten-year-old, with her parents, made a decision not to have a baby that was the result of a rape?”
Foster replied, “If a ten-year-old became pregnant as a result of rape and it was threatening her life, then that’s not an abortion. So, it would not fall under any abortion restriction in our nation.”
Swalwell directed his next question to another witness at the hearing, Sarah Warbelow, legal director of the Human Rights Campaign — asking her, “Miss Warbelow, are you familiar with disinformation?.... Did you just hear some disinformation?”
Warbelow responded, “Yes, I heard some very significant disinformation…. An abortion is a procedure; it’s a medical procedure that individuals undergo for a wide range of circumstances, including because they have been sexually assaulted — raped in the case of the ten-year-old. It doesn’t matter whether or not there is a statutory exemption; it is still a medical procedure that is understood to be an abortion. Beyond that, I think it’s also important to note that there is no exception for the life or the health of the mother in the Ohio law. That’s why that ten-year-old had to cross state lines in order to receive an abortion.”
READ MORE: SCOTUS condemned for voting to overturn Roe v. Wade
Far-right MAGA Republican Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio has claimed, in a tweet that he deleted, that reporting on the ten-year-old was a “lie,” and Swalwell called him out for it during the hearing.
“Speaking of disinformation,” Swalwell told Warbelow, “Jim Jordan called a ten-year-old rape victim a liar…. I know that he did that because he hates the president…. This law…. will bring us government-mandated pregnancies for ten-year-olds.”

Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) recently shed light on the damaging effects of Fox News host Tucker Carlson's rhetoric. On Thursday, October 21, the Democratic lawmaker took to Twitter with an audio clip of a Trump supporter attacking him for his remarks praising the U.S. Capitol Police officer who killed Capitol rioter Ashli Babbitt.
With the disturbing audio clip, Swalwell discussed what he describes as "the Tucker Carlson effect. "Listen to this. It's the Tucker Carlson effect," Swalwell explained. "Tucker attacks me. His fans respond with threats to kill my family. And Tucker knows exactly what he's doing."
The unnamed man leveled a disturbing verbal attack toward the California lawmaker in a lethal, racist rant. "Here's some intelligence motherfucker. They just showed you on Fox News on Tucker Carlson saying Babbitt, that unarmed veteran, that white woman that was shot by a cop... You said he was a brave officer shooting a serious threat. He was a coward bitch who shot an unarmed white woman. If she would have been some black nigger crackhead, you guys have had that cop's head on a stick."
:{
}:
"You people are a disgrace to God, our country, and our people. You are the enemies of the United States people, motherfucker. You atheist, Communist faggots are the threat to our democracy, our Constitution, and our way of life," he said.
:{
}:
The irate man went on and seemed to level a threat toward Swalwell and his family as he concluded with praises to former President Donald Trump. He added, "As for these foreign invaders you're lettin' into this country, I hope they chop you, your family up and feed them to their dogs. You did you fucking bitch. There's your free speech for today, asshole, from Trump Nation!"
Almost immediately after Swalwell shared the audio clip, Twitter users quickly sounded off. With a link to a similar case, former federal prosecutor Chris Alberto quickly noted that these types of verbal threats are considered a violation of federal law.
"These threats against Mr. Swalwell & his family violates federal law," Alberto wrote. "The [FBI] should visit this guy ASAP. While expressing disagreement and nonviolent dissent are protected speech, threats of violence fall into the scope of federal criminal statutes."
Others also weighed in with their concerns....

In keeping with the neck-snapping pace of the news these days, several breaking stories happened all at once Monday morning.
Postmaster General Louis DeJoy _{testified}_ before the House Oversight Committee, repeatedly declaring that he would not reverse the sabotage he imposed on the Postal Service mid-pandemic, and with a presidential election 70 days away. Donald Trump tried to disrupt the hearings by jumping into an amped-up _{airing of grievances}_ during the opening proceedings of the Republican convention, splitting cable news screens into two levels of Dante’s hell. Meanwhile, a former business partner of Jerry Falwell Jr. accused the Liberty University evangelist of being _{a willing cuckold}_ in a love triangle. Practically buried under everything else was word that the Trump administration _{will not comply with the Supreme Court’s order}_ to resume accepting new applicants into the DACA program.
We also learned that New York’s attorney general, Letitia James, has officially launched _{a lawsuit against Eric Trump}_ and the Trump Organization for an array of financial crimes including tax fraud, charges initially touched off by Michael Cohen’s 2019 congressional testimony. It’s noteworthy that James has already successfully disbanded both the Trump Foundation and Trump University, both for fraud. She’s also currently prosecuting the NRA for bilking its members out of $65 million in a span of just three years.
All this crap landed in our laps Monday morning following the announcement late Sunday that the Mouth of Sauron herself, Kellyanne Conway, would be leaving Trump’s Mordor to deal with what appears to be a serious conflict with her husband, George Conway, and their daughter.[15 yo --> emanc minor]
there’s no need to elaborate upon the grisly details of the Conway family squabble because, frankly, it’s none of my business. It’s no one’s business except theirs.
That being said, the aspect of Kellyanne Conway’s life that’s entirely our business is that she has collected a government salary for three and a half years so far, while lying to the American public on a daily basis and enabling a fascist regime — a regime animated by Trump’s brittle ego and his unquenchable desire to install himself as a permanent chief executive not unlike his role model, Vladimir Putin.
Conway is almost as visible on television as Trump himself, and few members of the White House inner circle are more responsible for the hellscape we find ourselves in than she is. There’s not a blurt, not a racist policy, not an unconstitutional trespass, not a crime against humanity that Conway hasn’t managed to rationalize through her soulless, venom-spitting gift for toxic spin-doctoring.
And yes, Kellyanne Conway is a master at what she does — she’s an expert at turning every brain-searing nightmare from the Trump firehose of destruction into something that sounds almost innocent and commonplace. Her job is to make the deeply abnormal normal. She knows exactly how to play the whataboutism game — the dictum that “if everyone’s doing [insert wrong thing], then no one is,” perpetually justifying Trump’s most horrendous actions by round-pegging her “alternative facts” into the softened, pliable skulls of Trump’s fanboys.
Even before assuming a role at the White House, Conway was one of the architects of Trump’s 2016 campaign, alongside Steve Bannon, who was recently indicted on charges of defrauding Trump’s Red Hats out of millions. In that respect alone, she’s a charter member of a small rogue’s gallery of Trumpers who facilitated the ascendancy of American idiocracy: a nation on the verge of collapse, with hundreds of thousands dead, overseas dictators on speed-dial and a recession so calamitous that it has shattered all previous records.
But then something weird happened.
After the announcement of her resignation, there were more than a few influencers and random voices alike on social media who made it a point to express sympathy for Conway. While I respect the idea of discouraging a pile-on with respect to her family situation, neither she nor any other wayward Trump lieutenants deserve our sympathy. Not now, not ever. The only Trumpers who might get a pass on this front are the ones who did the right thing by blowing the whistle on their former boss, and even they ought to be prosecuted for any crimes uncovered, not unlike the aforementioned Michael Cohen.
In _{a new feature}_ about Donald Trump Jr. in the New York Times Magazine, reporter Jason Zengerle reports: “An electoral defeat in November, Trump Jr. fears, could result in federal prosecutions of Trump, his family and his political allies.”
Junior’s fears are well-placed.
The conspirators responsible for aiding in both the known and as yet unknown Trump crimes must be held accountable for their part in this brain-melting tangent in our political space-time continuum.
:{If Trump is defeated in November, there has to be what former U.S. attorney Glenn Kirschner dubbed a }
:{: a bipartisan panel tasked with investigating the high crimes we know about while uncovering what we don’t, then referring it all to the post-Bill Barr Department of Justice, the IRS and beyond. Everyone from the president himself down to Mike Pence, Bill Barr, Mike Pompeo, Kellyanne Conway, Mark Meadows, Ivanka Trump, Jared Kushner and the entire regime of post-apocalyptic ghouls who participated in or were aware of malfeasance and unconstitutional conduct inside the White House must be compelled, at the very least, to testify about what happened, when it happened and who was involved.}::{ The commission can work backward from the administration’s criminal response to the pandemic to the president’s repeated attempts to cheat in the 2016 and 2020 elections, including with Ukraine, Russia and the Postal Service, and then to the theft of taxpayer funds, the myriad myriad cases of obstruction of justice and so onward.}:
Beyond the crimes commission, the Justice Department under a new attorney general needs to resuscitate all the probes Barr has obstructed or canceled in aid of his puppeteer in the Oval Office.
Get ready, though. Not only will the Red Hats scream bloody murder — and they’ll scream loudly — there will also be a movement among Democrats to simply move on. To cut bait. The Van Joneses of the cable news landscape — those who’ve attempted to misuse the coveted label “presidential” to describe the exact opposite — will exploit their platforms to promote letting the nation “heal” by leaving the past in the past.
We can’t allow those voices to prevail, or we risk the rise of the next Trump, sashaying through the gigantic Trump-sized hole in our institutions and political discourse. Already, Donald Trump Jr. is on the shortlist to run in 2024 — unless, that is, Trump decides to declare himself president for life. Without adequate recompense, it’d be remarkably easy for either Trump himself or a successor to repeat this entire shitshow. If there’s one thing we’ve painfully learned over the last several years, it’s that there’s little we can do to stop the criminals once they’re in office and hold power.
We have to make it politically suicidal for new and existing Republican leaders to follow Trump through that hole in the wall. Trumpism must be put down. For that to happen, patriotic Americans have to maintain a fierce resolve to end it through the election and then through popular support for accountability, ideally through some mechanism like Kirschner’s crimes commission.
It won’t be easy. The Trumpers will be clever with their mea culpas. Conway and others will exploit social media, reality television or cable news to humanize themselves. They’ll try to pretend they had nothing to do with anything, or they’ll flip the script to frame themselves as victims. Don’t let them. There are victims in all this, for sure, but it ain’t them. The real victims are the children who’ve been ripped from their parents for the sin of escaping death, only to be incarcerated and terrorized in “the land of the free.” The real victims are the peaceful protesters who were gassed and fired upon by Trump’s stormtroopers, all for a botched photo-op. The real victims are the 177,000 Americans and counting, none of whom have received a moment of silence from their president, along with millions of others who were infected by a deadly virus thanks to Trump’s lack of responsibility, ethics, morality and personal restraint. Heather Heyer, _{murdered}_ by one of Trump’s “very fine people,” is a victim. American voters are victims. Americans who get their medications, their paychecks or their ballots by mail are victims. American taxpayers of all parties and all ideologies are victims. We could do this all day.
Kellyanne Conway, on the other hand, is a culprit. She freely chose to take a gig in which she erased all those victims from the minds of anyone paying attention to her. She was in the room where major decisions were handed down and rather than blowing the whistle on the worst of the worst, which is what a decent and patriotic American would have done, she hastily ran outside to explain to the world why the atrocity of the hour was actually great news — our lying eyes be damned.
Letitia James has the right idea. Glenn Kirschner has the right idea.
, D-Calif., who has also called for a crimes commission has the right idea. But in order for post-Trump reforms and accountability to occur, the rest of us are bound by our citizenship to fearlessly and steadfastly support the women and men who will spearhead the effort. We have no choice. There are too many wrongs that need to be made right, too many lives disrupted by Conway and her co-conspirators. And remember to tell the people who would rather we ignore it all and move on, that, yes, we will move on — after we deliver satisfactory closure to one of the most terrible chapters in our national history.

Eric Michael Swalwell (born November 16, 1980) is an American politician serving as the U.S. Representative for California's 15th congressional district since 2013. A member of the Democratic Party, his district covers most of eastern Alameda County and part of central Contra Costa County.
Swalwell was raised in Sac City, Iowa, and Dublin, California. While attending the University of Maryland, College Park, he served as a student liaison to the city council for College Park, Maryland. He then interned forEllen Tauscherand worked as a deputy district attorney in Alameda County, California. Before being elected to the U.S. House, he served as a local appointee on Dublin commissions, and served one term elected to the Dublin City Council. He was elected to the U.S. House in November 2012, defeating incumbent Pete Stark, a 40-year incumbent who had held the office since 1973. Stark was a fellow Democrat almost a half-century Swalwell's senior; Swalwell was born shortly after Stark's re-election to his fifth term in Congress in the 1980 election. Swalwell took office on January 3, 2013.[1][2][3][4]
Swalwell announced his candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination on April 8, 2019.[5][6] He dropped out of the race on July 8, 2019.[7][8]

Early life and education
Swalwell was born on November 16, 1980, in Sac City, Iowa, the first of four sons of Eric Nelson Swalwell and Vicky Joe Swalwell, both of whom are Republicans;[9] his father was then serving as police chief in Algona, Iowa. After leaving Iowa, the family eventually settled in Dublin, California.[10] He graduated from Wells Middle School and then from Dublin High School in 1999.[11]
Swalwell attended Campbell University in North Carolina on a soccer scholarship from 1999 to 2001.[12][13] He broke both of his thumbs in 2001, his sophomore year, ending the scholarship.[10][14] Swalwell transferred to the University of Maryland, College Park, as a junior.[12] In 2003, he completed his bachelor's degree in government and politics at Maryland. He enrolled at the University of Maryland School of Law and earned his Juris Doctor in 2006.[15]
At the University of Maryland, Swalwell served as Vice President of Campus Affairs for the Student Government Association, and was an elected member of the Student-Faculty-Staff University Senate and of its executive committee. He was also an active member of the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity,[16] and served as a student liaison to the City Council of College Park;[17] the latter appointment inspired other college towns to consider similar arrangements.[18]
Career in local politics
In 2001 and 2002, Swalwell interned for Ellen Tauscher in the United States House of Representatives, then representative for California's 10th congressional district. Swalwell focused on legislative research and constituent outreach and services.[15] The September 11 terrorist attacks occurred during his internship, inspiring him to public service.[citation needed] The attacks also inspired his first legislative achievement: using his Student Government Association position at Maryland to create a public–private college scholarship program for students who lost parents in the attacks.[citation needed]
After graduating from law school, he worked as an Alameda County deputy district attorney. He also served on the Dublin Heritage & Cultural Arts Commission from 2006 to 2008 and on the Dublin Planning Commission from 2008 to 2010 before winning election to the Dublin City Council in 2010.[19] While he was running for the U.S. Congress, an attempted recall of Swalwell from the city council led by an anonymous group began,[20][21] but after he won election to the U.S. House, the attempt was abandoned.[citation needed]

Swalwell was only able to contest Stark in the general election because of California's new "top two" primary system put in place by 2010 California Proposition 14. Under that system, the top two primary vote-getters advance to the general election, regardless of party affiliation.[23] In the June primary election, Stark finished first with 41.8 percent of the vote, Swalwell placed second with 36 percent of the vote, and independent candidate Chris Pareja finished third with 22.2 percent of the vote.[24]In September 2011, Swalwell filed to run for Congress in the 15th district of California[22] The district had previously been the 13th, represented by 20-term incumbent Democrat Pete Stark. Stark had represented the district since 1973, seven years before Swalwell was born. Swalwell took a leave of absence from the Dublin City Council in order to run for the seat.[10]
In the November 2012 general election, Swalwell was endorsed by the San Francisco Chronicle.[25][26] During the 2012 election cycle, the Stark campaign accused Swalwell of being a Tea Party candidate. The accusation was refuted by Swalwell and the San Jose Mercury News, which also endorsed Swalwell.[27] Stark refused to debate Swalwell during the campaign. In response, Swalwell organized a mock debate with an actor playing Pete Stark, quoting him verbatim when answering the moderator. Other campaign gimmicks included Chinese-manufactured rubber ducks, and a dreadlocked, bearded information man.[4][28]
In the November 2012 election, Swalwell defeated Stark, 52.1 to 47.9 percent.[29]
During his service in the House, Swalwell has become known for innovative and extensive use of social media to connect with constituents. In April 2016, The Hill dubbed him "the Snapchat king of Congress",[30] and he used Facebook Live and Periscope to broadcast House Democrats' historic gun-violence sit-in in June 2016.[31] Swalwell later called for new policies regarding cameras on the House floor.[32]
First term (113th Congress)
Swalwell was sworn into his first term in the House on January 3, 2013, becoming only the third person to represent this district and its predecessors since 1945. George P. Miller had held the seat from 1945 to 1973; Stark won it after unseating Miller in the 1972 Democratic primary.
In his first term, Swalwell served on the House Committee on Homeland Security and the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology. Swalwell helped lead the fight against Transportation Security Administration administrator John S. Pistole on his decision to lift the ban on pocketknives at airport security;[33] the decision eventually was reversed.
Soon after taking office, Swalwell helped establish the United Solutions Caucus, a bipartisan group of freshman House members who met regularly to discuss areas of agreement.[34] United Solutions Caucus members introduced several iterations of the bipartisan Savings, Accountability, Value, and Efficiency (SAVE) Act to cut hundreds of billions in government spending over 10 years by rooting out waste and improving efficiency.[35]
During a House vote on June 18, 2013,[36] Swalwell recorded a video of his vote against a bill that would ban abortions after 20 weeks to his mobile phone (the video was a six-second clip of him pressing the "nay" button on the electronic voting machine) and uploaded it to Vine, an internet video service.[37] House rules bar "the use of mobile electronic devices that impair decorum" and provide that "No device may be used for still photography or for audio or video recording."[37] Swalwell defended the action, stating "We operate under rules that were created in the eighteenth century, and I think it's time that the Congress start to act more like regular Americans do. I did not see this as impairing the decorum. I think what this did was highlight, for all to see, the democratic process."[37]
On December 12, 2013, Swalwell introduced the Philippines Charitable Giving Assistance Act into the House.[38] The bill allowed Americans to deduct from their 2013 taxes any charitable donations made between January 1, 2014, and April 15, 2014, provided they were made for the relief of victims in the Republic of the Philippines affected by Typhoon Haiyan.[38] The typhoon caused an estimated $1 billion in damage and killed thousands of people.[39] Swalwell said that "Typhoon Haiyan devastated many parts of the Philippines and we should make it as easy as possible for Americans who want to assist those affected by the storm."[39] Swalwell saw the bill as providing "another incentive for Americans to donate and donate now - when their help is needed most".[39] On March 25, 2014, this legislation was signed into law by President Obama.[40]
By the end of his first term, Swalwell had gotten three bills through the House and two of them signed into law — more than any other freshman.[41]
In 2014, Swalwell announced that he would serve as chairman of Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley's O' Say Can You See PAC's Young Professionals Leadership Circle due to his friendship with the governor. He made clear that his support was about the 2014 midterm elections and not an endorsement of a potential presidential bid by O'Malley in 2016.[42] However, Swalwell did ultimately endorse O'Malley in July 2015.[43]
Second term (114th Congress)
Swalwell was challenged in 2014 by Republican Hugh Bussell, a senior manager at Workday, Inc., and by Democratic State Senate Majority Leader Ellen Corbett of Hayward. The Democratic challenger, Corbett, placed third place in June's top-two primary, not earning enough votes to make the general election.[44] Swalwell defeated Bussell in the November general election, 69.8 percent to 30.2 percent.[45] He was sworn into his second term on January 3, 2015.
During his second term, Swalwell served on the United States House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, and as ranking member of its Central Intelligence Agency Subcommittee. He also retained his seat on the United States House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology.
In May 2015, Swalwell joined with Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) to launch the bipartisan Sharing Economy Caucus,[48] to explore how this burgeoning new economic sector can benefit more Americans. In April 2015, Swalwell founded Future Forum,[46] a group of young House Democrats focused on the concerns of millennials. Swalwell still chairs the group – now numbering 27 members – and has traveled to more than 40 cities to listen to millennials' concerns at college campuses, business incubators, and other locales. These sessions have led Swalwell to become particularly outspoken on the issue of student loan debt;[47] as of mid-2017, Swalwell said he himself still carried almost $100,000 in debt from his undergraduate and law-school education.
In February 2016, Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi elevated Swalwell to vice-chair of the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee,[49] which sets the Democratic policy agenda and nominates Democratic Members for committee assignments.
Third term (115th Congress)
Swalwell was challenged in 2016 by Republican Danny Reid Turner of Livermore.[50] Swalwell defeated Turner in the November general election, 73.8 percent to 26.2 percent.[51] He was sworn into his third term on January 3, 2017.
In December 2016, Swalwell was named the co-chair of Democratic Steering and Policy Committee, serving with Rosa DeLauro.[52]
Swalwell also retained his seat on the United States House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence but left the United States House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology in order to serve on the United States House Committee on the Judiciary,[53] and its Subcommittee on Courts, the Internet, and Intellectual Property, and Subcommittee on Regulatory Reform, Commercial and Antitrust Law.
Swalwell and Rep. Elijah Cummings in December 2016 introduced the Protecting Our Democracy Act,[54] which would create an independent, bipartisan commission to investigate foreign interference in the 2016 election. They reintroduced the legislation for the 115th Congress in January 2017,[55] but despite promoting a bipartisan commission, it failed to win any meaningful bipartisan support. The bill has been widely seen as unnecessarily duplicative given the then on-going Special Counsel investigation (2017–2019), as well as multiple existing committee investigations in the U.S. Congress. Swalwell's bill attracted support along entirely strict partisan lines except for two Republicans, and ultimately failed to reach a vote in the United States House Committee on Foreign Affairs. Swalwell has remained a constant presence on national news networks throughout 2017, voicing his views on the investigations.[56]
Fourth term (116th Congress)
Swalwell was challenged in 2018 by Republican Rudy Peters of Livermore.[57] Swalwell defeated Peters in the November general election, 73.0 to 27.0 percent.[58] He was sworn into his fourth term on January 3, 2019.

Swalwell announced his candidacy on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on April 8, 2019.[60][61] He also released a campaign ad announcing his campaign on his social media pages.[62] Swalwell had stated that gun control would be the primary focus of his campaign.[63] He made a formal announcement at Dublin High School on April 14, 2019.[64][65]
Swalwell participated in one presidential debate. During the debate, he commented that he was six when Joe Biden spoke of passing the torch to a younger generation.[66] On July 8, 2019, Swalwell withdrew from the race for the Democratic nomination.[67] At the time, Swalwell was at risk of not qualifying for the second set of debates.[68]

Political positions
Swalwell has advocated the repeal of the No Child Left Behind Act, and increasing funding for education, while decreasing funding for defense. He has also advocated for renewable energy jobs to be created with federal stimulus money. He has stated he would attempt to raise the cap on the Social Security payroll tax (which currently applies to annual earnings only up to $110,000 as of 2012), so that wealthier Americans would pay more into the program. He has proposed the idea of a "mobile Congress", with members casting votes remotely, while spending more time in their districts.[69][70] In March 2013 Swalwell led in the writing of an open letter to John S. Pistole, administrator of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), opposing the new policy which would allow passengers to bring knives on-board airplanes.[71] He is a strong supporter of marriage equality for same-sex couples and is staunchly pro-choice.[72]
Swalwell condemned the 2019 Turkish offensive into north-eastern Syria and called for possibly suspending Turkey's membership in NATO.[73]
Comparison of XYZ Affair to Trump–Ukraine scandal
In January 2020, Swalwell penned an op-ed for NBC News comparing the XYZ Affair to the 2019 Trump–Ukraine scandal that led to President Donald Trump's impeachment in the House of Representatives. Swalwell stated that in 1797, President John Adams' agents, Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, Elbridge Gerry, and John Marshall, were asked by Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord's agents Baron Jean-Conrad Hottinguer, Pierre Bellamy, and Lucien Hauteval to "do a favor" (pay a bribe) before they could meet Talleyrand. Swalwell noted the similarity to Trump's demand of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to do a favor.[74]
Personal life
Swalwell and his first wife are divorced. He married his second wife, Brittany Ann Watts, a sales director at the Ritz-Carlton in Half Moon Bay, in October 2016.[75] Together, the couple have a son, born in 2017,[76] and a daughter, born in 2018.[77] Swalwell revealed in February of 2019 that he was afflicted with Bell's palsy at one point.[78]

‘Russia is still listening’: Democrats take aim at Trump after report uncovers potential new election help from the Kremlin
Written by Cody Fenwick January 14, 2020
A new report for the New York Times about a Russian hack of the Ukrainian oil company Burisma is giving many a disturbing sense of history repeating itself.
The company, which is at the center of the impeachment of President Donald Trump, was reportedly targeted by Russian military hackers. The Times explained:
…experts say the timing and scale of the attacks suggest that the Russians could be searching for potentially embarrassing material on the Bidens — the same kind of information that Mr. Trump wanted from Ukraine when he pressed for an investigation of the Bidens and Burisma, setting off a chain of events that led to his impeachment.
Former Vice President Joe Biden’s son Hunter worked on the board of Burisma while his father was in office and conducting diplomacy with Ukraine, which raised concerns about conflicts of interest and influence peddling. However, there’s been no credible allegations or evidence put forward to indicate that the Bidens were engaged in wrongdoing, and the vice president’s efforts to root our corruption in Ukraine may have even cut against the interests of his son’s company. Nevertheless, Trump and other Republicans have tried to turn the matter — which was entirely overlooked until Biden became a formidable 2020 contender — into a massive scandal for the Democratic frontrunner.
Now, it looks like Russia is helping in the effort. This is hardly a wild accusation, given the extensive evidence that Russia intervened in 2016 to get opposition research on Trump’s opponent and to otherwise manipulate the election.
Democrats are casting a critical eye at the Trump administration following the publication of the report, noting that Trump has done far too little to curb Russian election interference and has, in fact, encouraged it.
“We only learned of this hacking through the press,” said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who is one member of the Gang of Eight that is traditionally kept in the loop on significant intelligence matters. “Congress must be briefed on what the administration knows about this attack and why the president doesn’t have a plan to protect our elections.”
It’s not clear how much the administration knows about the cyberattack, though the Times’ report does indicate that one “American security official” was a source for information about the operation.
“Russia is still listening, Russia is still attacking,” said Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA), who sits on the House Intelligence Committee.
He was referencing Trump’s infamous proclamation during the 2016 campaign: “Russia, if you’re listening, I hope you’re able to find [Hillary Clinton’s] 30,000 emails that are missing.” According to former Special Counsel Robert Mueller, Russian hackers made their first attempts that same day as Trump’s request to obtain Clinton’s personal emails.
So it seemed that Russia was listening then, and it seems like Russia is following Trump’s lead now by targeting Burisma, the company he is so personally interested in. And he’s made it clear that, if Russia or anyone else wanted to offer him dirt on an election opponent, he would welcome it.
“I think I’d take it,” he told ABC News in June when asked about whether he’d accept opposition research from foreign governments. “I think you might want to listen, there isn’t anything wrong with listening.” Though he equivocated, he suggested he might not inform the FBI if presented with such an offer, despite the obvious counterintelligence risks and potential for criminal activity.
“As far as I see it now, knowing that this president in the past, as Special Counsel Mueller said, invited, welcomed, and planned to benefit as a candidate from Russia’s help, if he does not condemn this, I and many other Americans will hold him as complicit in any attack on any candidate that seeks to benefit Donald Trump,” Swalwell told MSNBC.

Watch: Eric Swalwell calls out Devin Nunes’ own ties to the Ukraine scandal to his face

Found it. This was Devin Nunes’ reaction during the moments when @RepSwalwell blasted him and tied him to indicted Giuliani associate Lev Parnas! So delicious.

Written by Igor Derysh / Salon November 22, 2019
Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif, called out Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., on Thursday over his links to an indicted associate of Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani who assisted with the effort to pressure Ukraine into launching investigations to help President Donald Trump’s re-election campaign.
Swalwell cited a Daily Beast report that Giuliani business partner Lev Parnas helped Nunes arrange meetings in Europe while the former House Intelligence Committee chairman led an investigation seeking to undermine former special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia at Thursday’s impeachment hearing.
His comments came after Fiona Hill, the former top Russia expert on the National Security Council, hit out at Republicans on the committee who have pushed a conspiracy theory welcomed by Trump that Ukraine framed Russia in the 2016 election meddling case, which she said “clearly advance[d] Russian interests.”“Dr. Hill, you cautioned us on the dangers of members of this committee perhaps peddling any Ukrainian conspiracy theories that could benefit Russia,” Swalwell said. “I want to ask you if you’ve heard the name Lev Parnas, of Ukraine, someone in this investigation who was influencing President Trump and Rudy Giuliani about some of the debunked conspiracy theories you referenced,” he added, referring to a baseless George Soros-linked conspiracy theory that led to the ouster of former Ukraine Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch.
After Hill acknowledged that she had, Swalwell asked if she was aware that Parnas was indicted “for making foreign contributions to Republicans in U.S. elections.”
“I am aware of those reports, yes,” Hill replied.
“Are you aware of yesterday’s Daily Beast story reporting the indicted Ukrainian Lev Parnas has been working with ranking member Devin Nunes on Mr. Nunes’ overseas investigations?” Swalwell asked, before entering the report into the official record.
Swalwell quoted from the piece, which said that Parnas “helped arrange meetings and calls in Europe for Rep. Devin Nunes in 2018… Nunes aide Derek Harvey participated in the meetings… which were arranged to help Nunes’ investigative work.”
Swalwell then addressed Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., noting that Schiff had been “falsely accused throughout these proceedings by the ranking member as being a ‘fact witness.’”
“Now, if this story is correct, the ranking member may have actually been projecting,” Swalwell said. “And, in fact, he may be the fact witness if he’s working with indicted individuals around our investigation.”
The timeline in the Daily Beast report dovetailed with Nunes’ parallel investigation to the official House Russia probe, seeking to undermine the “origins” of the Mueller investigation.
Parnas’ attorneys told The Daily Beast in response to the report that his client is “prepared to testify completely and accurately about his involvement in the President and Rudy Giuliani’s quid pro quo demands of Ukraine” and confirmed that Parnas assisted Nunes.
Parnas attorney Joseph Bondy shared the report on Twitter and wrote that he hopes the House Intelligence Committee will “finally arrange to hear my client” and his “pivotal” testimony related to Trump, Giuliani, and the Republican Party, adding the hashtags “LetParnasTestify” and “LevIsKey.”
Bondy later added that Parnas has already “been producing materials” to the committee “pursuant to his prior subpoena” and offered “hard evidence” to investigators.
“Mr. Parnas’ speaking provided Rep. Swalwell the information that Nunes plainly should have disclosed,” he tweeted. “Let him meet with [the House Intelligence Committee].”
Bondy did not deny on Twitter that Parnas was seeking leniency in his own criminal case in his bid to testify to impeachment investigators. He told The Daily Beast that Parnas fired former Trump attorney John Dowd and agreed to cooperate in the inquiry because Trump denied knowing him even though they met numerous times. Parnas’ attorneys and associates have placed him at the center of numerous key events in Trump’s pressure effort on Ukraine and said he is willing to testify to them under oath.
“President Trump’s recent and regrettable disavowal of Mr. Parnas,” the attorney said, “has caused him to rethink his involvement and the true reasons for his having been recruited to participate in the President’s activities.”

The House Anti-Science Committee
The salvos against soot regulations and social science are examples of extreme rhetoric with potentially disastrous consequences to the scientific enterprise in return for relatively small gains to corporate polluters.
But the existence of climate change represents an existential threat to the fossil-fuel industry, and the Republican Party has become, as political historian and former GOP operative Kevin Phillips writes, the vehicle for “petroleum-defined national security.” It's global warming that sparks the Science Committee’s most aggressive language.
The March 26 hearing before the Science Committee to review the President’s proposed science budget was a typical display.
After Smith gaveled in the hearing, he launched directly into an attack on climate science. “Unfortunately, this administration’s science budget focuses, in my view, far too much money, time, and effort on alarmist predictions of climate change,” he said.
After the likes of Posey, Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-Calif.) and Rep. Randy Weber (R-Texas) took turns trying to mock and belittle White House science advisor John Holdren, it became clear that by the time Smith called on the last committee member, Rep. Eric Swalwell, a Democrat from California, Swalwell had had enough. He had listened to more than his fill of climate denial, science-bashing and general hostility toward the witness.
Swalwell, at 33 the committee's youngest member, warned Holdren about where Republicans might try to lead him the next time he's called to testify.
"At this rate, frankly, I'd say you should be prepared to address whether the earth is round or flat – that might come up – or whether indeed gravity is happening," said Swalwell. "You never know what could fly at you from what we've seen already."
