Or that <a href="https://www.lcv.org/article/memo-build-back-better-act-would-still-include-historic-emissions-reductions-environmental-justice-investments/" style="box-sizing: border-box; background: none transparent; border: 0px; line-height: normal; overflow: visible; appearance: none; transition: all 0.25s ease 0s; cursor: pointer;">unleashes investments</a> to clean up Black and Brown neighborhoods near toxic sites in a myriad of ways to improve public health and quality of life. Instead, House Republicans voted in lockstep against bold climate action that meets the moment.Democrats can tell their constituents how the Build Back Better Act will create good paying jobs, cut pollution fueling climate disasters, lower energy costs for working families and begin to bring justice to communities on the frontline of climate change. Abigail Spanberger in VA-07. Freitas has repeatedly voted against taking action on the climate crisis and protecting our water from toxic pollution. During his time in the Virginia State Legislature, he voted against banning fracking and offshore drilling and against protecting drinking water from PFAS. Susan Collins, Republican from Maine, “is an extremely important ally in the fight to protect the environment and public health. […] Her leadership is more important now than ever, and we are grateful that she continues to stand up to big polluters by supporting climate action and protections for the air we breathe, the water we drink and the lands we cherish.”What a difference two years, two new Supreme Court justices, and countless Senate votes backing Donald Trump make. This time around, the LCV is endorsing Democratic candidate Sara Gideon, one of a handful of challengers to Collins. “From her time as a town councilor to her tenure as Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives, Speaker Gideon has been a leader fighting the climate crisis, promoting clean energy, & banning offshore drilling in Maine,” LCV tweeted in its announcement.In its endorsements, the LCV says that it seeks to “elect environmental champions who will address the climate crisis and advance a more equitable clean energy future.” Beyond that, though, “LCV Action Fund understands the critical importance of a representative democracy and is committed to endorsing candidates that are reflective of the diverse communities and identities across the country.”Sorry, Susan Collins. We recently received a “cease and desist” letter from the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) threatening to sue us if we don’t stop calling them out for what they really are: a Koch brothers-funded group that’s trying to shred our nation’s environmental protections.

We’re not backing down — instead we’re doubling down on our efforts to strike back against ALEC by targeting their biggest corporate members — companies like Comcast, Pfizer, and FedEx.

“Common Cause’s statements concerning ALEC’s position and activities on climate change are statements of opinion, are neither false nor defamatory, and as such are not legally actionable,” said Common Cause’s attorney Vinita Ferrera in responding to ALEC’s attorneys. “For these reasons, Common Cause declines ALEC’s request to retract or alter any statements appearing on Common Cause’s website or in other Common Cause materials.”

“We don’t appreciate the attempt to silence LCV just because we disagree with ALEC’s positions,” LCV’s senior vice president for communications David Willett told the Washington Post. “Usually if someone wants to get serious about tackling climate change, they ask about working with us, they don’t threaten to sue us.”

The Washington Post pointed out that the increasing amount of negative publicity ALEC has gotten as it’s emerged in the past several years from the shadows where it preferred to reside seemed to have had an impact on the group.

“The legal spat is an escalation of the conflict and suggests ALEC is feeling the heat of the activist groups’ efforts,” it said. “It also suggests a new risk to organizations that rely on the donations from companies that do not want to be associated with organizations accused of denying that human activity is warming the atmosphere at an alarming rate.”

Martha Marks "has enjoyed a varied career. After teaching high school Spanish for five years, she returned to graduate school, earned a Ph.D. in Spanish literature and linguistics at Northwestern University and taught college for eleven years. In 1985, she left academia to write textbooks (6 published in all) and work as a free-lance language proficiency tester and trainer for the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages and many colleges, universities, and corporations.

"In 1990, a local land-use battle led Martha into politics. In 1992, she was elected to the Lake County (IL) Board and Forest Preserve Board on an avowedly pro-environment platform. The following year, she helped form the Lake County Conservation Alliance, an umbrella organization of grassroots groups trying to preserve the natural beauty and quality of life of their area. She was re-elected two times as a county commissioner and served for ten years until her (voluntary!) retirement in December 2002.

"In 1995, Martha was one of a handful of Republican environmentalists who set out to restore the GOP's conservation ethic by creating Republicans for Environmental Protection. She served on the Steering Committee in 1996; later that year she was elected president, an office that she held until November 2008, when she became Chairman of the Board. She was re-elected to REP's board in 1998, 2002 and 2006.

"Martha served on the Board of Directors of the national League of Conservation Voters from 2001 to 2007. In October 2002, she was honored with the "Council's Chair's Award" at a gala awards dinner of the National Resources Council of America.

 

"Martha's diverse career has earned her recognition in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the Midwest, and Who's Who of American Women. She is also an accomplished wildlife photographer with her own "Martha's Art" web site. She and her husband live in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The League of Conservation Voters and the Natural Resources Defense Council Action Fund announced Monday that they are joining forces on a multimillion-dollar electoral effort.

The goal of the initiative, which they're calling LeadingGreen, is to drive $5 million in direct campaign contributions to pro-environment candidates in 2014.

The League of Conservation Voters has traditionally pointed donors to individual candidates that it is supporting through its GiveGreen program. LeadingGreen would expand on that program with the support of the NRDC Action Fund.

The league has already raised nearly $3 million for 16 Senate and House candidates in this year's election, according to the group's website. The biggest recipient of those funds so far is Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.), who has brought in just over $260,000 through GiveGreen. Overall, GiveGreen raised $2 million for candidates in 2012 and $1 million in 2010.

Among national environmental groups, the League of Conservation Voters is the biggest electoral spender, between the GiveGreen contributions and its own spending on behalf of candidates. In 2012, the group spent $14 million on independent electoral expenditures -- a significant increase from the $5.5 million it spent in 2010.

The NRDC Action Fund has also directed potential donors to candidates in previous elections. In 2012, the group's supporters gave $3.9 million directly to candidates.

The two groups said in a press release that their combined effort will "unite top donors and influencers at the intersection of policy and politics to maximize their policy engagement and political leverage on climate change." They also said they plan to organize donor summits to "develop a unified strategy heading into each election cycle."

With several open Senate seats and some of our closest allies up for re-election, LCV made it our top priority in 2012 to elect new Senate climate champions and defend current ones. We spent more than $8 million on Senate races this cycle and were victorious in 8 of 9 priority Senate races. In six of these races, we were among the top three independent expenditures supporting the pro-environment candidate.

That means liberal dark money in 2013 makes up 70 percent of all the dark money spent so far.  At this point in 2011, liberal money accounted for less than 6 percent of the dark money spent, and in 2009, the total was a little higher, at 6.5 percent.

The top spender, the League of Conservation Voters, has already reported laying out more than $800,000 in direct support for Ed Markey's (D-Mass.) successful run for the Senate seat vacated by John Kerry -- almost twice as much as all dark money groups combined had spent at this point in the 2012 cycle.

LCV's pro-Markey efforts account for nearly half of the liberal dark money spent so far in 2013, and a third of all dark money spent.  

Last February, when Markey came under fire for comparing the Citizens United decision to the infamous 1857 Dred Scott Supreme Court decision -- which denied citizenship to anyone of African descent and provided a legal framework for slavery -- his campaign responded by saying, "Karl Rove, the Koch Brothers and anonymous special interests have no place in our elections and no place in this Senate race." Yet once the race was over, it was clear that the vast majority of the anonymous money spent in the race favored Markey.

LCV's efforts in support of Markey were entirely positive, an aberration in dark money spending. Most outside groups use their resources to attack their favored candidates' opponents.

So far this cycle, more dark money has been spent supporting candidates, rather than opposing them -- a departure from both the 2010 and 2012 cycles at this point in time.

Climate-denier politicians under attack by new ad campaign

Here comes more bad PR for climate change–denying politicians ofa: Mckinley west v, scalise, rubio, upton, baron, poe, boehner, cassidy  LA, rohrbacher, morgan griffin (vikings]; broun;

Barack Obama’s advocacy group, Organizing for Action,began trying to embarrass denier Republicans earlier this year. Now the League of Conservation Voters is piling on, spending nearly $2 million on TV advertisements aimed at four GOP flat earthers.

Ads unveiled Monday ridicule the voting records and anti-scientific statements of Reps. Dan Benishek (Mich.), Mike Coffman (Colo.), and Rodney Davis (Ill.), and a fourth ad will soon target Sen. Ron Johnson (Wis.). From a League of Conservation Voters press release:

 

    This ad campaign follows the release of bipartisan polling [PDF] by LCV showing that young voters across the country are particularly concerned about climate change and support federal action to address it. A solid majority in the poll said they are willing to hold accountable those who ignore the problem, going so far as to describe climate change deniers as “ignorant” and “out-of-touch.”

The Hill points out that LCV has run a similar campaign before:

    Last election cycle, the group launched a $1.5 million effort to defeat what they called the “Flat Earth Five,” five lawmakers who were skeptical of climate change science. All but one were defeated.

An ad campaign targeting climate-denying politicians appears to be having something of an effect.

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), under fire for being a climate denier in a world ravaged by climate change, this week denied believing that humans are not warming the planet. Yet the senator still will not acknowledge the basic fact that humans are warming the planet.

Confused? So are we. But we’ll try to explain.

Johnson is one of four members of Congress being targeted by a $2 million TV advertising campaign funded by the League of Conservation Voters. LCV went after Johnson because of statements he’s made denying climate science, like in 2010 when he told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, “I absolutely do not believe in the science of man-caused climate change,” and speculated that sunspots or “something in the geologic eons of time” might instead be responsible for the changing weather.

But on Wednesday, Johnson stepped back from such strong assertions. During a Madison Rotary Club luncheon, he said he’s a “strong environmentalist.” (What is this — 1984?) Here were his comments to the group when asked about climate change, as reported by the Isthmus Daily Page:

    “I don’t have a belief one way or the other,” he told the crowd of some 300 Rotarians. “I’m willing to accept the science. I’m willing to accept the facts. What I’m not willing to accept is that until we know conclusively what’s doing it and if any action we take would have any kind of measurable impact, I don’t think we should be spending trillions of dollars unilaterally.”

     

Here’s the thing: If you “don’t have a belief” that humans are changing the climate, then you are a climate denier.

The ad is part of a new billboard campaign launched by the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) targeting members of Congress with "extreme, anti-science views on climate change."

According to an LCV press release, the billboards are expected to remain in the districts of targeted representatives through Election Day. The campaign is part of the advocacy group's "Flat Earth Five" program, which specifically targets Rep. Dan Benishek (R-Mich.), Rep. Ann Marie Buerkle (R-N.Y.), Rep. Dan Lungren (R-Calif.), Rep. Francisco Canseco (R-Texas), and Rep. Joe Walsh (R-Ill.).

The $2 million program's goal is to defeat five members of the House of Representatives unsupportive of climate efforts. All of them have received an overall lifetime score of under 10% on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard, which rates members of Congress based on how they vote on environmental issues.

As The Guardian points out, the effort is reflective of environmental groups acknowledging that, even given an environmentally friendly president, green efforts will be difficult without support from Congress.

 

According to Real Clear Politics, Walsh, Benishek and Lungren's seats are a "Toss Up," while Buerkle and Canseco's are "Likely/Leans Dem."

 

 

Rep. Benishek has been criticized by LCV for his "efforts to slash clean water standards protecting the Great Lakes." He also declared in a recent debate, "Frankly, I'm not sure how significant global warming is." Responding to audience boos, he defended himself as a scientist, adding, "I don't think that we should be spending trillions of dollars not knowing what the long-term effects of the climate are." Challenger Gary McDowell shot back, "The climate is definitely warming... I think virtually every scientist who is not working for BP or the Koch brothers, and Dr. Benishek, agrees that we have to do something."

Rep. Lungren has been targeted by LCV for his "votes to dismantle the Clean Water Act and allow polluters to keep spewing dangerous mercury pollution into our water and air." In 2009, Lungren said, "It is my view that sound science rather than ideological bias should direct our consideration of this issue" though added "Without waiting for proof or disproof of global warming, it is prudent for us to take action to minimize CO2 emissions."

 

Rep. Canseco has been criticized by LCV "for voting in favor of tax cuts for millionaires like himself and companies that ship jobs overseas, while voting to slash job-creating investments in clean energy." In 2009, Canseco responded to an EPA announcement regulating carbon emissions, stating that "passing environmental regulations based on reportedly manufactured global warming data is utterly the wrong direction for our country.”

According to the controversial site OneNewsNow.com, Canseco argued that the rhetoric was wrong, stating, "It is really counterproductive to have a debate about whether or not there's climate change... What we should be having is a debate about policies that are promoted and implemented in the name of climate change and that negatively impact opportunities for our citizens and kill jobs."

Rep. Walsh has received an overall score of just 3% on LCV’s scorecard. In a Chicago Sun-Times questionnaire, Walsh said that although it's important to protect the environment, on climate change "The science is not clear yet. Certainly, man's potential role in global warming has not been definitively determined."

Rep. Buerkle has faced scrutiny by LCV for her "votes to block rules limiting toxic mercury pollution that causes birth defects, respiratory illnesses and premature deaths." In an interview with The Syracuse New Times last year, Buerkle said, "Cycles come and go. There is global warming, but the bigger question is: Is it humans that are causing this? And I think that is where the debate still lies. I think politically it’s been decided, but I don’t think scientifically it has."

Many would argue it is the reverse, given 98% of active climate researchers are in agreement on anthropogenic climate change.
